STRIPPED: Greg Friedler's Naked Las Vegas (2010) Review

I caught this documentary on Showtime and couldn't change the channel. I've been to Vegas about twenty times and, admittedly, I haven't given much thought to the people who actually live there. WOW.
When in Vegas, I'm usually so caught up in my own pleasure (and then regretful pain), I have no reason to shed brain cells on anything but gambling and partying. What I didn't realize is there is a motley population of people who call that place home: people with hopeless dreams of stardom; seemingly happy people with 9-5 jobs; people who are running away from something; people who would give anything to run somewhere else.
Artist Greg Friedler makes Las Vegas the destination where he completes the final book in his "Naked" series: "Naked Las Vegas." Filmmaker David Palmer documents Friedler's journey. I don't know much about this book series, but what Friedler did was photograph approximately 150 people with their clothes on and then completely nude. This is where the documentary gets so intoxicating. Once these random people take their clothes off in front the camera, they feek obligated to divulge the most intimate details of their bizarre lives... to a total stranger! So, with every nude body that we see, we get another glimpse into the desperate, tragic, yet often times hopeful lives of these Vegas locals. Initially, the expectation of more nudity kept me glued to the screen, but with each nude body came another intimate story, and eventually, like an addict, I was sucked into these people's remarkable lives.
This documentary captured the human condition in a way I've never seen before. Bravo.

The Girl Most Likely To . . . (1973) Review

This movie has been a long time coming!
In a nutshell... after a traumatic experience, an ugly duckling is transformed into a ravishing beauty.
By putting theory (from the numerous college courses she has taken) into practice, Miriam Knight exacts revenge on all those who were cruel and unkind.
Stockard Channing's breakthrough role.
It will be great to view this dark comedy on DVD. A welcome addition to my collection. There's a spot waiting for it between Kill Bill and Carrie, in other words, the REVENGE section.

Megalodon (2004) Review

Megalodon (2004)

The Worlds biggest and safest oil rig is ready to drill on unstable ocean floor in the Arctic. Bad move. In a scene from Deep Star Six, the drilling opens up a huge cavern that is teeming with life that has gone extinct elsewhere 60-70 million years ago. One life form is a megalodon which leaves the rich feeding ground of the cave for the more barren waters of the Arctic (would you like a bridge with that?). Actually the first shark evidence, a shadow, does not appear until 47 minutes into the movie. The rig and the small cast are now at risk from a powerful predator.
Mistakes abound in this film in unexpected ways. I am used to these film getting the extinction dates wrong but this one got it right. However, it does play heck with a lot of other details. Imagine a body at 5,000 feet down that does not suffer from the pressure. Imagine and elevator and subs that travel the 5,000 feet from surface to ocean floor in a matter of minutes. Imagine a shark that has no internal organs (it is solid like a statue). Imagine planning rescue boats that have to be dropped bow first sixty feet to the water (and have wounded aboard). Watch visitors get invited to a dinner with no food and everyone leaves at the start.
The disk is very barren. Just play movie and a chapter selection. No trailers, commentary, behind the scenes (although it is credited in the credits), no nothing.
