Love's Brother Review

Love's Brother

`Love's Brother' is an Australian film by first-time director Jan Sardi, known as the writer for critically acclaimed `Shine.' But the feel-good touch of `Love's Brother' is closer to `The Notebook' (for which he also wrote the script), and though the film is predictable like that Nicholas Sparks adaptation, this little film is equally romantic and heart-warming as the hit movie from Hollywood.
The film is set in a unique background (probably reflecting that of the director). We are directly introduced to the small community of Italian immigrants in Australia during the 1950s, where Angelo (Giovanni Ribisi) is looking for someone to marry, sending letter and his photo to the ladies (introduced by a kind but a bit officious matchmaking agent) to ask if she could come to his town and live with him. Unfortunately, every letter returns with polite refusal, and Angelo, being too timid and lacking self-confidence, sends his handsome brother's photo in the next letter, without telling anyone about it.
The problem is, his unsuspecting brother Gino (Adam Garcia) has already a girl friend Connie (Silvia de Santis). And things get more complicated when Rosetta (Amelia Warner) arrives from the South Italy, believing that Gino is the one with whom she has exchanges the wedding vow.
Jan Sardi shows steady and orthodox skills as director, not ignoring the details of the Italian community, and the four characters whose fate we truly care. The film is a romantic comedy, but the stress is given more on romance than comedy, and the photography of Andrew Lesnie (`Lord of the Rings' trilogy) perfectly captures the mood of the story with the delicate colors.
Among the four principal characters, perhaps Gibisi's Angelo is the least engaging and sympathetic one though he is playing the pivotal role, and I found he slightly overdoes the eccentric nature of the boy unlucky in love. Amelia Warner is stunningly beautiful, and Adam Garcia is good-looking and good-natured, but the film allows them to show little more than that. Veteran actor Barry Otto (father of Miranda Otto, Eowyn of `LOTR') appears as kind priest, but too short time is allotted to him. And sorry to report this, but `Love's Brother' will end in a predicable way like any good romantic comedy does in the end.
But I like the film, and love the atmosphere and optimistic, dream-like nature of it. It is like listening to a familiar story in a land where we know happiness is promised for everyone.

Harlequin: Loving Evangeline (1998) Review

I am almost done watching the movie version of one of my favorite Linda Howard books "Loving Evangeline." How could Linda Howard allow her book to be changed almost 100 percent into this piece of trite? Robert and Evie should be good looking. Robert Cannon is portrayed by a middle aged actor with a paunch and graying balding hair. Evie is sexless as portrayed by the actress. Other than his suspecting her of selling his companies software there is nothing else remnicent of the plot.I am giving this DVD away to someone when I finish it. It stinks. I recommend the book to all for a great love story though.

The Accidental Tourist (1988) Review

The Accidental Tourist (1988)

THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST has some of the most interesting dialogue ever heard in a film about relationships. The story begins when Macon Leary, a travel writer played by William Hurt, comes home to find his wife, Sarah, (played by Kathleen Turner) wants a divorce. This marriage has endured almost unbearable strain after the death of their only son, and Macon's coping strategy is to strive to keep things as they are. When Macon's welsh corgi becomes bad-tempered and starts to bite, Macon can't stand the thought of parting with the dog that was his son's childhood companion. Macon is forced to rely on others when he breaks his leg and moves in with his sister and brothers, and the movie really picks up momentum when he meets a sparkling divorcee dog trainer named Muriel Pritchett (played by Geena Davis). Muriel has her eyes on Macon Leary from the first moment she sees him, when she begins a long campaign to win this world-weary man over and bring joy back into his life. When Sarah finds out that Macon is seeing another woman, she has a change of heart about finalizing the divorce, and seeks a reconciliation. Macon's choice then becomes one of maintaining the status quo or navigating his way through uncertain yet exciting territories with someone new.
Both the acting and the dialogue in THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST are first-rate and highly memorable. Geena Davis steals the show with her shining performance of a quirky, life-positive divorced single mom with a single-minded interest in helping Macon Leary to become more than a reluctant sight-seer in life. My favorite line of dialogue in this dialogue-driven film is when Macon says to Sarah, "I'm beginning to think that maybe it's not just how much you love someone, maybe what matters is who you are when you're with them." I've contemplated this concept for years, and been continually inspired by it's significance.
While this film may be considered slow-moving and somewhat sad, it ultimately delivers an uplifting and inspirational message of hope.
