Mark of the Whip Review

[MARK OF THE WHIP] Once again, Roman Nowicki gets credit for delivering a new take on a tired format - the erotic horror or horror-porn genre. In America, you can't tie women up (or down) and whip, beat or torture them in film, not since the feminist movement caused a stir back in the mid-70's and put a stop to it (I ain't sayin' it's right or wrong, I'm just sayin'). But in Poland, or the wherever these flicks are produced, such considerations don't exist (again, I ain't sayin' it's right, I'm just sayin'), so what we're graced with here is a degenerate dinner of gluttonous proportions. This is an explicit, hardcore feature, not your usual 'unrated/nonrated' flick that you watch hoping to see something stimulating or fulfilling - odds are, you'll truly be shocked at what you're watching from time to time, at a 'bare' minimum. Wicked, filthy, shocking, gratifying - what's not to love? And no, I'm not involved with this flick in any capacity - 'wish I was... Director's cut w/ reinstated footage, making of, deleted scenes, trailers as well as four bonus sex scenes - it's like Xmas at the Marquis de Sade's place... recommended.

The Pet (2006) Review

The Pet (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This will contain some spoilers, but this information needs to be known before you spend your money on this film. The Pet could have been a nice little film about a power exchange alternative lifestyle, even as unlikely as 24/7 animal/pet play may be. It had enough budget and was shot well enough. Even the actors were good enough(some were distinctly better than others though). Pierre Dulat as Philip was quite good. Andrea Edmondson as Mary/GG was also decent enough.
My BIG problem with the film is that the makers promoted it as a "true" look into a caring, power exchange alternate lifestyle. The maker's website description is misleading as is the film's trailer. They tell you the main characters are intruded upon by international slavers. In fact, the main characters (except for Mary/GG) are all business partners and friends in a kidnapping/murdering syndicate that deals in selling body parts and slave laborers. Philip's wish that Mary/GG not be sold as such is purely his personal wish. So, once again a chance to make a film showing the beauty of a loving dominant/submissive relationship is turned into just another demonization of the BDSM community. By this depiction, you are either crazy, evil or just plain stupid to participate in such a lifestyle. Yet, the makers promote this film as being about a loving consensual relationship. Its really just an exploitation film and
when you break down the ridiculous plot, there really is not much left to
like. One example of this plot is after a couple weeks of training, having your Pet be devoid of nearly all cognitive function(they do say that clearly). So, we have people talking about murdering their Pets and selling the organs right in front of them with no reaction. Oh, come on!
Non consensual Slave Trade is a serious subject and one that deserves much better than this film to bring attention to it.
Having said that, I did give The Pet two stars. It is filmed
well enough and it does have some nice scenes in it. Mary/GG and Nicky/Taps(played by Sommer Nguyan)fetching sticks in the nude outdoors
(in real snow and cold) is a standout. If you do see it, it is clear they did it for real. The other reason is the always lovely Lydia McLane(under a pseudonym Jane Steele), as Red. She has a particularly nice scene at the beginning of the film.
This is not a film to set as an example of any BDSM power exchange lifestyle. It is a terribly flawed, shamelessly misrepresented exploitation film. If you don't care about spending the money and seeing it for the few good scenes it does contain, you might get some enjoyment. If you are looking for a decent film about alternative lifestyles, The Pet is not it.

A Woman called Sada Abe (1975) Review

A Woman called Sada Abe (1975)

Though less arty than the oshima classic, this erotic tale of l'amour fou is a stunning film in its own right. You get much more of the lead characters life. Its beautifully made, well acted. It's also less hermetic than oshima's masterpiece, making less artistic, but a little easier to watch and enjoy. Higherly recommended for fans of classic Japanese erotic cinema!

Playroom Review

Five teen boys from an Eastern suburb enjoy a kegger at Maximo's parents' place, inviting the hottest chicks in town sometime in the 1980s. Twenty years later, most of the clique has gotten married and settled down, but they still blow off steam once a year during a big city weekend getaway. This year it's Philadelphia, ostensibly for an Eagles game, but for a few of the now grown men it's their chance to cheat on their wives and live it up and do cocaine without worrying about the consequences. They're all still boys at heart and the movie makes that clear once every thirty-five or forty seconds.
They each have different personalities, though the movie is underwritten as to what the personalities are, and the actors apparently have a lot of room to ham it up in the best Cassavetes style ("Husbands" anyone?), so you get the impression one is secretly a coward, another a sex addict, a third one probably a closet case, while Max is really trying to grow up, and the last guy (Nick) is the one who was raised by alcoholics so his personality has been deformed in some unclear way, but he's a cheater.
What they don't know (or most of them don't know) is that this year their group has been targeted by a David Lynch-like crew of pornographers who plan to kidnap and sexually molest the best looking of them. Led by a creepy old man (Robert Blake in LOST HIGHWAY, anyone?) this film crew locks up Nick and Jason in the eponymous "playroom" and proceed to make them into chemslaves, keeping them chained to their beds with only a single sheet between them and strap-on horrors they could not previously have imagined. The two actors do grand work looking like they've been put through hell, in a scene that goes back and forth with rapid cuts to a nightclub where the un-kidnapped members of the Five are watching a female stripper with rapt amusement. I get the impression the director is saying, porn is great while you're watching it, but when you're forced to bend over a jungle gym and be filmed with a electrified and sparking club inserted deep into your rectum, it's not that funny, is it, funny boy? These scenes are filmed in the most grim INLAND EMPIRE way, with the suspense being mostly about, will they be saved before they are snuffed out on video? How will we know?
One of the mad old man's lead actresses is a hooker to whom Max, the hero, had been inexplicably kind years ago, saving her from a beating at the hands of a john she had cheated. Years later, after the hardening of her human instincts and five years more on the street, has that spark of humanity been crushed in her, or will she risk her own life to give Max a helping hand when he needs it? The boys all have wives and kids back at home in suburbia. . who will return? Who will become addicted to the snuff lifestyle? This movie has two clever twists, and doesn't need them, how's that? Otherwise DELIVERANCE did it rather better, except these guys have the kind of body John Travolta had in the SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER sequel, STAYING ALIVE, directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Street of a Thousand Pleasures / Way Out Topless (1972) Review

Street of a Thousand Pleasures / Way Out Topless (1972)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Street of a Thousand Pleasures is basically one long excuse to ogle naked women, which it allows the viewer to do very well. The plot is very thin, an American (played by John Tull of Sassy Sue and Midnight Plowboy fame) saves the life of a sheik, who in gratitude reveals his harem, which is basically a hundred girls standing around naked. It seems like the film was originally intended for 3-D, as the camera zooms in and apparently up against breasts, belly buttons, etc. This film does have some simulated sex, with tons of frontal nudity. Despite this, it eventually gets tedious, Tull's character wanders from one room to another looking at the girls, which he's more interested in than actually having sex with the girls throwing themselves at him. Uschi Digard and Michelle Angelo are in the film briefly, the rest are a mix of cute and skanky.
Mondo Topless is your basic 60's T&A, with no frontal nudity and not much in the way of plot to recommend it. The extras are good if sometimes a little odd, mostly 60's nudie type stuff. Breast Orgy does have some full nudity although like Thousand Pleasures gets tedious after a while.

Graphic Sexual Horror (Special Edition) Review

This is an unblinking journey into a taboo world. I found it fascinating and stereotype-shattering to hear the models speak for themselves about their motivations and experiences, and to see the artistic vision of the founder of insex.com. The dynamics of power and money at this porn site seem little different than any other workplace. Barbara and Anna have shone a bright light into a dark corner of our society without judgement. Congratulations to them and thanks for offering this to us. See it! I laughed and cringed, but come away with my preconceptions turned upside down.

The Image (1973) Review

The Image (1973)
Average Reviews:

Radley METZGER's THE IMAGE (also known under the more exploitative title THE PUNISHMENT OF ANNE) is without doubt not everybody's cup of tea. Based on an infamous French bestseller this movie is shocking in its relentless depiction of a weird triangle relationship between a mature woman, her submissive young girl friend and a curious author.
Please note: If you feel uneasy when you see graphic sex, humiliation, degradation, bondage, whipping and urination, then do not watch this film. On the other hand, this is no raincoat brigade movie. Instead it is a masterly crafted piece of art with outstanding cinematography, a beautiful score and fine actors (Yes, everybody here can act better than most mainstream academy award winners.)
Regrettably the rough SM scenes could easily distract from or obscure the motivation of the characters.
THE IMAGE has an unusual book-like structure with chapters (no, I'm not refering to the DVD chapters). According to the liner notes the film is very faithful to its literary source. I liked the social setting of the film - it takes places among educated, eloquent and wealthy jet set people. And the film makes good use of its nice Paris locations. I found THE IMAGE very compelling viewing. I just didn't like the fitting room scene too much, because it seemed like a rather cliche porn situation to me.
Some words about the DVD: SYNAPSE did a real great job with the transfer. One can't praise the picture quality high enough. The uncut film is presented widescreen.
Unfortunately there aren't too many extras: the director's filmography, an isolated score and five trailers of Radley METZGER movies: SCORE, THE LICKERISH QUARTET, CAMILLE 2000, THERESE AND ISABELLE and CARMEN BABY. Kudos to Stephen R. BISSETTE for his insightful liner notes. I recommend to read it before you watch the movie, because it really enhances your understanding of the film despite some spoilers.
