...either the master itself or the manufacturing process for this particular archive product is defective. There is a problem with poor compression and edge ringing that absolutely ruins this DVD-R release. Don't believe the small sample flash video of the film over at the Archive site. It hides the problem of what seems to be an "old, smeary analog master", to quote one Home Theater Forum participant that confirmed that this is a mass problem with this disc, not just my personal bad luck. I actually remember this one when it was running in theaters and it deserves better treatment than this. It's a strange little tale of a hotel across the street from MGM in 1939 that is trying to cash in on the publicity of the making of The Wizard of Oz and all of the strange goings on that surround it. Some of it is completely inane, but it is largely a fun film. Until Warner's fixes the problems with this one, avoid at all costs.

Jack & The Beanstalk (2010) Review

Jack and The Beanstalk (2010)

This was a fun movie if you're young at heart and liked fairy tales as a kid. If you're not though, forget it because you'll probably turn it off. It doesn't deviate far from the original Jack In The Beanstalk story, but the writers were very creative in weaving other fairy tales into the storyline. It's filled with fun and sometimes silly comedy, and some great deliveries from Gilbert Godfrey, who I thought really fit the role of "The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg" with his raspy, shrill voice. The exchange between him and Chevy Chase was particularly fun too. The writers even put in a variation of the Three Stooges "Who's on first" routine, which to me was totally unexpected and a hoot.
For me it was just a fun excursion into a fantasy land of the fairy tales I grew up with that were all mixed up into one goofball movie. If you like to take movies apart and examine them piece by piece you won't want to watch this movie. Some of the acting was great, in particularly the job that Chloe Moretz did, but some was average. Overall, I think it's a great movie for kids, and like I said.. it's a nice twist on the original tale that's fun if you're an adult who is young at heart and doesn't mind movies that require you to check your brain at the door.

Hot Tub Time Machine (Unrated) (2010) Review

I really wanted to hate this movie. When my friend opted for this on "husband-has-the-kids-tonight" night, I mostly agreed just to use up a free ticket. Yes, it is crude, and it is lewd and it's totally socially unacceptable. Having said that, I laughed 'til my sides hurt. I've not laughed this hard since Blazing Saddles. It is that good. Don't take the kids, don't take the parents, don't take bosses or members of clergy - just go, laugh and feel free to revel in the silliness. A bit of warning - when they say 'Rated R' they're serious...strong language and sex.
