Top Dog (1995) Review

Top Dog (1995)

In "Top Dog", Chuck Norris again plays a tough cop who prefers to work alone, very much like in "Lone Wolf McQuade". His boss forces him to work with a partner, only this time the new partner turns out to be a dog named Reno, Together, they must stop a violent white supremacist group and at the same time find out who killed Reno's last partner.
Watching "Top Dog", I get the feeling the filmmakers couldn't decide who their target audience was. The cop/dog story, and a subplot involving a young boy suggests a family film, but the film is no less violent than many other Norris films. I doubt if it's suitable for children. On the other hand, some scenes feel very much like a family film and aren't likely to appeal to action or Chuck Norris fans. To me the film would have been better without those scenes. It's still an entertaining grade B film with both action and humor. The interaction between Norris and his dog is more fun than that of James Belushi and his dog in "K-9". Recommended to Norris fans and fans of lightweight action/comedies who can overlook the more silly parts of the film.

Jackie Chan Kung Fu Master Review

Jackie Chan Kung Fu Master

I love Jackie Chan and his movies. Don't be fooled by the title and the box art. This is a poorly made movie about a kid who dreams of meeting Jackie Chan. Jackie pops up once or twice in some on-the-set action scenes that are so substandard they're painful to watch. "Walker, Texas Ranger" had better fight scenes. The whole movie looks like somebody shot it with their home video camera, and Jackie volunteered to give them an hour of his time one afternoon. My kids hated it. Even fast-forwarding to the "action" didn't help this turkey. I rented it for a dollar and still felt ripped off. If you're a true Jackie fan, I just wanted to warn you. This movie is so bad it makes Jackie's rare turkeys like "The Tuxedo" seem like "Drunken Master".

Phantom (2009) Review

Phantom (2009)

Kit Walker has come of age but before he can take up the challenge of becoming the 21st Phantom, his adoptive parents have to bite the dust.... The PHANTOM saga continues in this almost 3 hour two-part television mini-series movie with Ryan Carnes playing the legend. Compared to the long history of dozens of Tarzan films, it has always seemed a Hollywood anomly that the Phantom had to date only rated ONE serial, ONE feature film and an animated TV series. Finally we are treated to another visualisation of the GHOST WHO WALKS legend, but a somewhat disappointing one at that. A pity that lessons of the past still seem to not have been learned. Pause for a moment to consider another film legend - The Lone Ranger who has appeared in a couple of serials, a long running TV series and several movie adventures. The original TV episodes with Clayton Moore are fondly remembered and his two cinema adventures remain very popular with fans especially the first Lone Ranger film which was almost non-stop action with our hero besting the bad guys but only after Tonto was almost strung up and the Lone Ranger had recovered from being shot. I mention this because many years later Hollywood tried to revive the legend with an updated Lone Ranger film that was a third of the way through it before our hero appeared in his traditional blue outfit accompanied by the unforgettable strains of the William Tell Overture allowing fans to finally stamp their feet with approval. But at the end of the day, fans berated the producers for a boring film with far too much delay before our hero appeared. Fast forward to the current Phantom adventure. Guess what - our hero does not appear in full uniform and chasing the bad guys until part 2 - YES - THAT'S NOT TILL AN HOUR AND A HALF INTO THIS PRODUCTION !!! (Yawn, yawn, yawn.) The Billy Zane Phantom film was originally panned for its comic strip production values but is now very fondly remembered for being a fun and faithful rendition of the comic strip hero we have come to admire. The new PHANTOM fails to generate any of the excitement captured in that film. The new story is quite boring and when the bad guys open fire, none of them think to take aim at the Phantom's lower face which is the one body part not protected by his new kevlar body suit. Overall, the best that can be said is that it's great to see the Phantom on the screen again but this half hearted resurrection will do nothing to enhance the legend and the expected luke warm response to this product is unlikely to encourage film producers to invest in a more worthy film adaptation. To give this an A rating, the A will have to be defined as AVERAGE. And as for the new uniform, we watch movies to be entertained. I for one, would much rather see an entertaining movie set in the 30's to 50's with the Phantom suited up in the traditional Billy Zane style costume than this new and almost unrecognisable version of a present day hero in a sad and confused drug fuelled modern setting. Yes, the new Phantom goes through all the motions but is he entertaining?

My Dog Tulip (2011) Review

My Dog Tulip (2011)

This is a story about the cure of loneliness...in a sense not remarkable, and yet told simply and with great heart. An unhappy bachelor (middle aged and middle class) has always felt unfulfilled in his love life. Then in his 50's he takes a chance and brings home an abused female German shepherd dog as his friend.
And so what we have are the daily routines - so to speak - of a man and his dog. Taking her out to the park, finding a mate for her, cleaning up after her. Tulip (the name of the dog) loves Mr. Ackerley unconditionally and through that love, he learns to love her the same way. There are no madcap adventures...no maudlin sentimentalities - no heroics - just the developing affection that the two share, as both of them get older.
What makes this film work so well is the marvelous artwork...No, it is not precise, bright, or boldly drawn. Instead, the art resembles child painting experimenting with watercolors. A street scene, a park, or the interior of the house reflects reality such as trash in the foreground. The shapes blend and mix and bend in messy ways which is a beautiful metaphor for love itself where emotions blend and mix and bend in messy ways. Love is becoming part of another - opening oneself up to another. These drawings make that emotion feel real- in a way that a perfect photographic image might not.
I cannot imagine any animal lover - particularly a dog owner - who will not (immediately) relate to the experience being detailed in this film. "My Dog Tulip" teaches us, as well as any other film, how unconditional love is a transformative power, perhaps THE transformative power in nature.
Christopher Plummer is a standout voice as the man in love with the dog. So if this film strikes your fancy, absolutely get your hands on another wonderful animation treasure, "The Man Who Planted Trees" also narrated by Mr. Plummer.
All those who have had a great relationship with a pet will want to watch this film.

Strikingly animated and featuring the voices of Christopher Plummer, the late Lynn Redgrave and Isabella Rossellini, MY DOG TULIP is a bittersweet retrospective account of author J. R. Ackerley's 16-year relationship with his beautiful yet intolerable German shepherd, Tulip. To Ackerley's surprise, Tulip turned out to be the love of his life, the ideal friend he had been searching for in vain for so many years.Special Features: MAKING TULIP, a making-of featurette; Theatrical trailer; MUTTS Shelter Stories; Sneak peek at the filmmakers' latest project SLOCUM AT SEA WITH HIMSELF; Downloadable materials; Optional 5.1 soundtrack; Subtitles for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing
