George Mckenna Story (1986) Review

George Mckenna Story (1986)
Average Reviews:

I seriously doubt Mr. Denzel Washington is able to give anything less than a performance of total conviction, as he proves once again to me here in one of his earliest leading roles. In a true-life portrayal of George McKenna, new principal to the trouble-torn George Washington Memorial High School, he is wholly convincing. The problems he encounters are not solely those caused by the students, but also the parents and indeed some of the teachers. His determination to turn things round stems from his passion that his pupils WILL graduate to college if they want to, and that this will never happen if they don't feel anyone cares about them. Despite resistance from some pupils and teachers,(not to mention ongoing gang warfare within the grounds), others rise to the occasion, both for themselves and for McKenna himself, such is the respect he gains. In the process of such diligence his once supportive girlfriend leaves him under the pressure of his split commitments, but as for the School, he succeeds. Seeing the graduating students really is a heartwarming moment! Having previously seen "187", it does make the violent scenes and troublesome pupils here look bland by comparison, but its hard to tell if this film was sanitised or "187" sensationalised. Regardless, its still well worth the watch, especially if you respect Denzel's work in later movies already.

I'm big fan of these comic DVDs. They take the actual comic book images/stories and create anime-style movies that you can sit back and watch on your television. Amazon also has these for the Micronauts and for Marvel superheroes such as X-Men, Hulk, and Daredevil among others which I recommend anyone should check out. These DVD are inexpensive, high quality, and can even be a reading tool since the dialog/narration text remains on the screen as it is spoken just like the look of a comic book.

Club VR Kate Rodger Erika Anderson UNRATED DVD Review

Club VR Kate Rodger Erika Anderson UNRATED DVD
Average Reviews:

Gorgeous Kate Rodger and Erika Anderson appears in this movie. Surprisingly strong plot for a film based on Virtual Reality.Virtual reality is a natural for softcore films, as anything can happen, including non-stop nudity and simulated sex, because VR is only limited by the imagination. For some reason, most of the couples erotica films based on this premise seem to be whodunnits, where someone dies during a VR session, and a detective must enter VR to catch the killer. This time, the victim is practically "Mr. VR," and the location is an exclusive Beverly Hills VR club. Detective Kate Rodger is assigned the case. She lives with her boyfriend and former partner who was shot and disabled in the line of duty, and her belief that it was her fault has made her unable to respond sexually to him. When she is forced to enter the VR world to look for clues in the victims past sessions, she is an easy target for seduction. Meanwhile her significant other begins to suspect that he should be jealous of VR. The film remains fairly tightly focused on Kate Rodger and her investigation and growing addiction to virtual reality. You might be also interested in the following Erotica titles:

Charles Bronson: Cabo Blanco/U.S. Marshal Review

Charles Bronson: Cabo Blanco/U.S. Marshal
Average Reviews:

"Cabo Blanco" is must-have DVD for true Bronson fans--and not the least reason is because you actually get to see the man act. But the most surprising thing about this Laserlight DVD is that the transfer, picture and sound, is actually quite good. And, unlike most budget dvds of contemporary films, this one is presented in widescreen. I know another reviewer mentioned that the film was originally shot in 'scope ("scope" is a term for generic Cinemascope techniques) but the aspect ratio here seems to be the correct one--no panning or scanning, and no actors cut in half on either side of the screen.
Now, it's certainly not a "restored" version of this obscure film, but they did find a very nice print which only shows wear at the reel-change spots.
And, as a bonus, you get to see a very young Bronson in an episode of the 1950s drama series "U.S. Marshall."
This is one of the few budget dvds of a public domain Bronson film that's actually worth buying.

Edward Scissorhands (1990) Review

Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This wonderful fantasy tale stars Johnny Depp as a not-quite-real teenager who was built by an eccentric inventor. The old man died before he could finish him, so Edward has knife blades where his fingers would be. A well-meaning Avon lady (Diane Wiest) finds him living alone in his crumbling castle, and brings him home to live with her family, which includes daughter Kim (Winona Ryder). Edward is naive and timid, but so sweet and helpful that he soon becomes the darling of the neighborhood. He is smitten with Kim, which angers her bully of a boyfriend (Anthony Michael Hall).
Diane Wiest is perfect as the ditsy and always-cheerful mom. Ryder is convincing as a selfish and spoiled teen. Hall is the villian you love to hate. The star, of course, is Johnny Depp. As Edward, he is painfully shy and lovelorn; his performance is so heart-wrenchingly delicate that you ache for him in every scene. Covered with white make-up and with only a few words of dialogue, Depp proves he is a very talented actor. The wonderful and quite frail Vincent Price, as Edward's loving creator, will surely bring a tear to your eye.
This completely unique film blends comedy, fantasy, and romance to make a sentimental fairy tale that both teens and adults will enjoy. It is a heart-breaker; bring your hankie.

Sword Masters: The Heroic Ones*Shaw Brothers* (2008)

An allstar-stellar cast and the most invested film of it's time -a purported million dollars or more was apparently spent on this production- Ku feng, deservedly is cast as the father of an elite clan of sons who are all very good warriors. David Chiang and Ti Lung are his favorites though and this is beginning to offend some of their siblings leading to a revolt and tragedy for the entire family. This film probably has one of the highest or THE highest body count of any Shaw Brothers film. Bolo even makes an apparence in the beginning of the story. Extremely well written, an all out production, with fine acting make this film a must have by any Shaw Bros. collector. If this DVD comes with the english dubbs Shaws fans are instore for quite a treat. The translations are excellent for the english dubbs in this film.

No screen team was more triumphant in the Golden Age of kung-fu cinema than the iron triangle of director Chang Cheh and his protégés David Chiang and Ti Lung. This is their quintessential historical epic, set during the waning years of the Tang Dynasty. It s literally brother against brother as David Chiang and Ti Lung display their remarkable martial arts prowess battling insiders and outsiders in a duel to the death for the fate of China.

Top Dog (1995) Review

Top Dog (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In "Top Dog", Chuck Norris again plays a tough cop who prefers to work alone, very much like in "Lone Wolf McQuade". His boss forces him to work with a partner, only this time the new partner turns out to be a dog named Reno, Together, they must stop a violent white supremacist group and at the same time find out who killed Reno's last partner.
Watching "Top Dog", I get the feeling the filmmakers couldn't decide who their target audience was. The cop/dog story, and a subplot involving a young boy suggests a family film, but the film is no less violent than many other Norris films. I doubt if it's suitable for children. On the other hand, some scenes feel very much like a family film and aren't likely to appeal to action or Chuck Norris fans. To me the film would have been better without those scenes. It's still an entertaining grade B film with both action and humor. The interaction between Norris and his dog is more fun than that of James Belushi and his dog in "K-9". Recommended to Norris fans and fans of lightweight action/comedies who can overlook the more silly parts of the film.

Independence Day (1996) Review

Independence Day (1996)
Average Reviews:

I have to say that I'm a big fan of this film, and I already own the DVD. Most of those wanting to buy this film on Bluray are those who have already seen it and liked it, so I won't comment on the movie content itself, but rather the technical and supplemental aspects of this release.
I borrowed a friend's copy of the BD version of ID4 just a few weeks ago, as I was contemplating whether to add this to my small but growing blu-ray collection. The picture and audio are superb, and watching this on my new LCD at 1080p with the lossless DTS-MA audio track really transported me back to the July of '96, when I watched this on the big screen. This movie has certainly aged well these thirteen years, and the special effects are still terrific even today. While watching, I was pretty much set on adding this to my collection.
That is, until after I finished watching the movie and wanted to see the extras in HD.
The DVD version I have contains two discs and a lot of extras, including an alternate ending, making-of feature, trailers, and cast/crew interviews. Sadly, in this BD release there are none, not even in standard definition. The only "extra" is a commentary track, which, as an another reviewer already pointed out, is laughably outdated. At $25, I would expect more than just a movie and nothing else.
The Dark Knight BD had two discs plus a digital copy for the same price- that was justifiable, even in this economy. This... isn't.
FOX is notorious for double-dipping their DVD and Blu-ray releases. I would imagine that a two-disc or dual-layered "special edition" version will come out over the next year or so.
Needless to say, this BD release is quite a disappointment.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Original Movie (1990) Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Original Movie (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have always been a fan of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cartoons at a very young age. I have a lot of the episodes on tape and love to still watch them. I had heard that there were three non-animation movies out on the series but was never really compelled to see them. But the other day while at the video rental store, I decided to rent all three out. And what a surprise I got when I saw the first film for I actually enjoyed and loved watching it!
15 years have passed since a rat named Splinter (Kevin Clash) found four baby turtles in a puddle of ooze in the sewers. Because of the contact with the ooze, Splinter and the four turtles became mutants. Naming them after Renaissance artists, Leonardo (David Forman), Raphael (Josh Pais), Michaelangelo (Michelan Sisti), and Donatello (Leif Tilden), Splinter teaches them the ancient secret art of fighting. When the mysterious evil Shredder James Saito organizes the Foot Clan formed of young teenagers, causing the city to be in uproar because of vandalism. With the help of reporter April O'Neil (Judith Hoag) and former athlete Casey Jones (Elias Koteas), it's up to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to save the day!
The movie has an interesting story-line if not extremely cheesy and corny but hey, that's how the original cartoons were! In fact, I would have found the movie unlikable if it hadn't contained some of the cartoon aspects of the original series. Also a lot of interesting facts are revealed like how Splinter's past is related to Shredder and the beginnings of the turtles.
Comparing the movie to the series, I was a bit surprised to find that movie usually centers on the character of Raphael. His character is a bit different from the series, a bit more hot-tempered, impatient, and more of a loner. Leonardo is still the leader, Donatello doesn't get much chance to work with gadgets and computers, and Michaelangelo... well... he's still his usual likable self! April O'Neal is also working for Channel 3 news instead of Channel 6 News. The adding of Elias Koteas as Casey Jones was an interesting thread to insert for he was a fun and likable guy.
The martial arts and fighting were well choreographed and was enjoyable to watch. I especially liked the fight at April's place, the end fight with the Foot, and the last fight with Shredder. The movie is also sprinkled from beginning to end with funny parts, quotable lines, and humor. Jim Henson should also get credit for doing an incredible job with the turtles and Splinter.
To sum of the movie, whether you are or aren't a turtles fan, I highly recommend this movie! Lots of fun and great entertainment, it's terrific for the family. The movie is rated PG because of some language, the fighting, and since it has some dark moments. I also recommend the next two "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies. The second one, "The Secret of the Ooze" is my personal favorite of the three.

Bloodmoon (1997) Review

Bloodmoon (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wait, one more stupid line from the movie. "Ken were cops, we don't do this".
First off if you do not like martial arts movies then this will not be worth your time. If you love Jean Claude Van Damme and all the great b-action movies like 'No Retreat, No Surrender' then you will absolutely love this flick and it will become an instant classic for you. It is actually from the same film company that discovered Jean Claude and did all the 'No Retreat, No Surrender' movies. The owner of the Seasonal Film Company(Ng See-Yuen)actually discovered old school stars like Jackie Chan and Hwang Jang Lee and produced their first successful movies. So when I saw Tony Leung Siu Hung and Ng's name on the back of the box, I had to have it. VERY rarely are American martial arts movies good. Sometimes they end up being a great movie but the fight scenes will be limited and only average. 'Bloodmoon' is the exact reverse. It has spectacular fight scenes, it's badly directed, and it's filled with enough cheese to at least laugh at the stupidness of it sometimes. There is even that part where they go to a strip bar and we get to see surgically enhanced women.
The movie stars out by ripping off 'Beverly Hills Cop' with an Eddie Murphy clone playing the cop. The only thing that makes this character different from Eddie Murphy is that he loves kung fu. This is a down point of the movie since he is certainly not the worst actor but the script could not get any worse. The really good thing though is that he can seriously fight. I thought it was a stunt double at first glance since his first fight is in the dark, but even in the light this guy was doing some amazingly tough choreographed fight scenes. One is a 3 on 1 fight with the killer. If they did double for him at all they fooled me. Then there is a woman fighter who is very good and you will for sure notice the stunt doubling for her. You have to watch for when Rob Van Damme(a wrestler) gets thrown through a window, they show a close up of his double for about 5 seconds. Personally, it was my favorite part of the movie. So Gary Daniels joins this unfunny Eddie Murphy type of cop to find a killer. This guy goes around killing a bunch of tough people. Luckily he doesn't just kill quickly but challenges them and we get these amazing fights scenes. The first fight was awesome but when he stuck his fingers into the guys chest to kill him, I thought for sure this movie would end up being a waste of time. Then you have that one part where the killer posts his murders on the internet and they try to track him down. Of course now the computer geek is saying "OK, he's in Bejing, wait, he's in Berlin, no, he's in Moscow". This may sound like a bad movie and it is but the amount of fights and the quality of them is what makes it good. All great fights and most of them are extended going 5 minutes or so. For a die-hard martial arts movie fan like me it just does not get better than this. The fights are brutal and I have to say that they are some of the best I have seen in a while. There is unfortunately a bit of wirework with the wires clearly seen but that is to be expected from a movie of this type of budget.
Now like all great martial arts movies every actor needs to be somebody who actually looks good fighting on screen and the villian needs to standout as the baddest mother on the block. Darren Shahlavi gets the job done nicely and his steel tipped boots are a nice touch. There is actually metal on the whole bottom of his boots and up the whole heel. He really gets to show off his sklls and how many great kicks he has.
Now I will say it once more so people don't get confused by my 4 star rating. This movie is a cheesy cop drama with a few good comic moments and it has some truly great fight scenes. So it is not for everyone and I warn you all that this movie has one of the stupidest endings of all time. "Ha ha ha ha, this is the endgame Ken". No not the ending sequence fights and Gary Daniel's race to save his family, that was bad, but the very last moment of the movie. It is the finest of cheese that you will ever find in a film.
I have to once again mention how great the fighting was and how great of a job that director/action director Tony Leung Siu Hung did. His choreography and editing of the fights is about as good as it gets. Now I just have to see the other American martial arts movie he directed which is called 'Superfights' and my life will be complete. Seriously, the movie is called Superfights.
I will warn you right now that this DVD from the Weinstein Company is sub-standard. Big surprise huh? Well of course it is not a surprise. These are the same people that edited down every Jet Li and Jackie Chan movie and not only cut it up but never offered their DVD's in the original Asian language. So luckily this is actually an American movie and we don't have to bother with the bad dubbing, just the bad acting. The DVD is presented in full screen and the picture quality is average. The first 2 fights were a bit blurry but it seems to clear up from there. Good sound quality.
There are no special features except filmographies.
One more bad line-"Don't worry honey, daddy's gonna save us".
Just one more line I promise. It does not have anything to do with the movie but you'd think that it would-"Did you notice there's blood on the moon tonight?" the masked killer asks in a dark voice as he has his leg extended in the air showing off his devastating martial arts skills.

Not to be confused with "Black Dynamite," a funny 2009 film, this is actually a ten film on 3 discs "blaxploitation collection" from Thug City Chronicles, some of which may or may not actually fall under the tag of blaxploitation - I found the cover at Target's site and squinted a lot, so here now is your list of included films:
Kill Factor
Pacific Inferno
Black Emanuelle 2
Miami Cop
Savage Island
Street Hunter
Indio
Detective Malone
Mercenary Fighters
Mafia vs. Ninja
You're welcome, Amazon.
I've seen none of these films and can't speculate as to their relative worth, but I HAVE learned that when you put 10 films in a box set, you can bet they weren't really hot and in demand on their own.

This is the best sounding 5.1 channel DVD that I have heard so far! The thunderstorms sound like the real thing and the dialog is always crisp and clear. This disc includes both widescreen and full screen versions of the movie. Unfortunately, there aren't any good special features on this disc (thats why only 4 stars instead of 5). I would have liked to have seen some behind the scenes info. This film has stunning visual effects and it would be nice to watch the computer art gurus in action! Even without special features, this disc is worth the money. It will squeeze every drop of performance out of your home theater!

Considering the ongoing racial controversy between Latinos and American society, this is one of the better statements (on film) ever made about a love affair between the two races.
Heather Locklear wanted the lead role in this film that eventually went to Dawn Dunlap, who was a star in another Roman Polanski film. That might be the one thing about this film that I wish was different, but it doesn't change the quality of the message being sent.
I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a modern-day (in the 80s) Romeo and Juliet.
