While the blurb sounded good, unfortunately Clone did not live up to its promise.
While the acting was ok, there were a couple of flaws in the script and the movie was very slow going in quite a few places.
The only bright light in the movie was the ending, which unfortunately made all of the previous 98% completely useless and a waste of the viewer's time.
Spend your money on a better movie.

El Cartel Review

El Cartel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Lesbian Nation Review

Lesbian Nation

you never know what you're going to get when you go into the unknown... but this was a well selected set of shorts by lesbian filmmakers. they're not lesbian erotica, if that's what you're looking for, but they're not short of women-loving-women. it's just that, in these films, the real love is usually coming from behind the director's camera. they're more about the film-making, which makes sense because one of the films is a nice little documentary of interviews with lesbian filmmakers called "lavender limelight." of the group, my favorite was "carmelita tropicana," which feels almost like a documentary because the rawness of the footage in '80s east village. "playing the part" was quite great to, a great little documentary about how a college-age woman (the film maker) approaches her relationship to her family and herself, how she appears in different contexts. but, this collection is great because it brings together a set of what would-be forgotten short films. overall, you just wish there were more.

Black Soul Dynamite (2009) Review

Black Soul Dynamite (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not to be confused with "Black Dynamite," a funny 2009 film, this is actually a ten film on 3 discs "blaxploitation collection" from Thug City Chronicles, some of which may or may not actually fall under the tag of blaxploitation - I found the cover at Target's site and squinted a lot, so here now is your list of included films:
Kill Factor
Pacific Inferno
Black Emanuelle 2
Miami Cop
Savage Island
Street Hunter
Indio
Detective Malone
Mercenary Fighters
Mafia vs. Ninja
You're welcome, Amazon.
I've seen none of these films and can't speculate as to their relative worth, but I HAVE learned that when you put 10 films in a box set, you can bet they weren't really hot and in demand on their own.

The Tinto Brass Collection, Volume I Review

The Tinto Brass Collection, Volume I
Average Reviews:

I fell in love with Tinto Brass movies from my first viewing of Frivolous Lola. It is the type of movie which is right up my alley. These are not porn movies, however, they are very erotic and sexy. Best of all the women in these films are not overly shaved, air-brushed, been under the knife too many times, plastic Barbi want-a-bes. These are real women, with real curves, real hair (you know which hair I am talking about) and real personalities. Best of all, most of Tinto Brass' female stars are Italian. I usually watch these films in Italian with the subtitles on, just to hear the melody of the language.
Plot-wise, almost every one of his films are the same (except Salon Kitty,) hapless, jealous, and hopelessly sexually repressed boyfriend/husband; free-spirited, sexually adventurous girlfriend/wife (did I mention hot & usually Italian), conflict ensues, erotic adventure takes place, resolution and a happy ending. What more could one want in life?
All Ladies Do It is the best of these three films, if you are ordering them one at a time. The women in Volume I lean more towards the more mature and curvaceous, while the heroines in Volume 2 lean more toward the young and innocent. All are pleasing to the eye. Happy viewing.

The Other Side of Sunday (1998) Review

The Other Side of Sunday (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The movie tells the story of a sixteen (?) year old girl, growing up in the cold environment of an orthodox, Norwegian church as the vicar's daughter. She is a very contemplative teenager, looking through the hypocrisy of the peolple that surround her. She strongly feels that the 'God' these people worship is a god that squeezes the life out of everyone who is trying to follow his heart. Her rebellion against this only grows by every question she poses against this rule-based Christianity that remains unanswered. It takes a lot of nerve and character strength to stand up against the prevailing morals in such a small community as she is living in, but at the end of the movie she has gathered enough courage to do so. By that time, this oppressing envinronment has cost the life of the only person in church she really could talk to. But saying more would be giving it all away. Though somewhat exagerating in black-and-white oppositions, this movie still tells a beautiful tale!

What a waist of time and a really cool spike costume. Who is it that thinks this is a good movie ? The only way you could write up a good review for this junk is if you worked on the movie, other wise I just call B.S. on any review higher then 2 stars. This is one of those "Monster" movies that is better left in the shadows and not in the light as you can plainly see this lame actor is wearing a costume with no make up. Why would you use a bright light in every other scene to light up every flaw in the costume and not use a little make up to blend it all in ? It really is worth seeing just so you can point and mock at the sad final cut. If your are not into seeing poor film making, bad acting and shoddy story telling stay away from this mess.

As they are each picked off one by one by a bizarre beast it becomes clear that none of them will make it out of this forest alive; unless the one the monster so desires is left behind. Will they stick together and find their way out of the grips of this love sick monster or will they turn on each other and perish in this dark fairytale?

Survive: Supervivientes de los Andes Review

Survive: Supervivientes de los Andes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The print on the new DVD of "SURVIVE - Supervivientes de los Andes" is the original uncut version of the film. The case indicates the running time as 103 minutes, but the film actually clocks in closer to 112 minutes(!). That's almost 1/2 hour longer than the original dubbed US version. I noticed several extra bits without doing a side-by-side - I think the initial skinning scene is slightly longer, there's another quick shot of a different body being skinned later on as well as some nasty business with an infected leg, and some of the trekking scenes and segments with the parents seem extended. This is all from memory, however - a researched breakdown of all the differences would definitely be a worthwhile undertaking. I was also surprised at how well the film actually holds up (especially in this original-language version) - definitely not as 'exploitative' as the American print always felt. Unfortunately, the low-budget still mars the crash scene as well as all the studio-shot scenes outside of the wrecked plane (can that snow be any more fake?), but the scenes shot on location are quite good as is the editing, music, and acting.
The print used on the DVD doesn't appear to have been 'remastered' in any way, but it looks decent enough. There are some lines here and there and some other flaws, but nothing really distracting. It's presented full-frame only and the english subtitles are burned-in. The DVD has the original spanish-trailer for the film, which does not shy away from indicating that it's about cannibalism, as well as two other trailers for other Urban Vision latin films.
Definitely a worthy purchase for fans of the film. It would still be great to get the modified American version some day, as well.

George Lucas in Love (1997) Review

George Lucas in Love (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Several reviewers around here really seem to want a lot from a 9 minute film.
'George Lucas In Love' was a very fun short. From Lucas' roommate Benji talking about an 'all powerful force' to his friends Hal & Chuck working on Hal's 'fastest thing on campus' to a professor whose speech patterns resembled a well known Jedi Master, this film has a heck of a lot crammed into it's 9 minutes. If anything, the filmmakers should have done a 15-20 minute film! The film was very clever and enjoyable. Maybe just a tad bit funnier than 'Hardware Wars'.
The music, cinematography, and acting are all very good, indeed. Anyone who didn't enjoy this at least a little really needs to get a sense of humor. Of course, it's a bit cheesy, but it's meant to be that way. It's presented in the slightly corny, overblown way that 'Hardware Wars' or the 'Naked Gun' films were. The same people who didn't understand those films probably won't understand 'George Lucas In Love'. It's not a 'great' film, but who cares? It's a fun little short by a guy who really loves 'Star Wars'. Some have condemned the filmmakers doing this just for the money. I seriously doubt that Mr. Nussbaum will make a huge fortune from this film and if he does, big deal. Nothing wrong with making money from doing what you love or making money at all. Surely, none of the people who reviewed this film would go and work at their jobs for free and live in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere! Anyway, GLIL is great fun and a great to watch before your next screening of 'Phantom Menace' or the original trilogy.

One Six Left Review

One Six Left
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having viewed One Six Right on Discovery HD Theater, I decided to get both the HD-DVD version of this film along with this "companion DVD."
However, unlike the beautifully produced original, this one is quite a let-down. While the making of One Six Right is interesting in its own right, I'm not sure if it warranted its own companion DVD, at least not in its present form.
While the interviews with Brian Terwilliger and others about the difficulties of making the film were interesting (among them, Los Angeles World Airports which owns VNY did not originally cooperate with the project), I would have liked to have seen more interviews with the pilots seen in the original. Terwilliger himself said the interviews alone consisted of 80-100 hours of raw footage, and this DVD would have been a great opportunity to include interesting parts of these interviews that had to be cut out of the original for brevity's sake.
Three of this DVD's own extras, "The Joyride", "Into the Clouds", and "Movie Montage" are already featured on the HD-DVD version with the added bonus of being in high definition, unlike the companion which is standard definition only. In fact, the extras portion of the HD-DVD version of One Six Right has better and more content than this companion DVD does.
At best, this DVD should be included with the standard definition version of the original as a two-disc set, and whatever footage isn't already duplicated in the HD-DVD version be integrated into that.

Alice (1988) Review

Alice (1988)
Average Reviews:

This is a film for children. . . sort of, with these ominous words we enter a decaying, claustrophobic wonderland filled with rusty drafting instruments, filthy shards of pottery, lots of sawdust and ageing specimen jars. Watching this movie is like being locked in a closet for a few hours, not exactly fun but impossible to escape. Alice herself undergoes the transformation from a barefoot little girl to a nineteenth century china doll exquisitley animated by the master of stop motion animation as she crawls through desk drawers and grim hallways. the famillar characters of wonderland become rotting museum displays scurrying about like nightmarish clockwork toys. the sound effects add considerably to the eldritch atmosphere - splintering wood, grating metal, and what sounds like some sort of ratchet create a disturbing effect, further reminding us how far from reality we are. this is definitely the best adaptation of Lewis Carrols masterpiece, and the rarest of all commodities - an original voice.

This adaptation of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" mixes animation and live action to create a dreamlike world, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's simply a kid's film. Young Alice (Kristyna Kohoutov?, spoken by Camilla Power) watches a stuffed and mounted rabbit come to life in her playroom and follows it through a magical drawer into a strange world that resembles a 19th-century toy store come to life, with a few specimens from a natural history museum thrown in. Czech animator Jan Svankmajer retains the familiar story elements but tweaks them with bizarre imagery brought to herky-jerky life with his spasmodic style of stop-motion animation. The caterpillar becomes a sock puppet with dentures, while other crazy creatures materialize as creepy skull-headed beings that bleed sawdust. Throughout the tale Svankmajer returns to punctuating close-ups of Alice's lips telling the story, just to remind us that this is a tale told. In the best surrealist tradition Svankmajer uses familiar objects in unfamiliar ways, giving a fantasy quality to the banal (and the not so banal) while tipping the dream logic to the edge of nightmare. While the imagery remains more unsettling than genuinely disturbing, younger children will certainly be happier with Disney's brightly colored animated classic "Alice in Wonderland". Older children and adults will better appreciate Svankmajer's sly visual wit and unusual animation style. "--Sean Axmaker"

Wild America (Snap Case) (1997) Review

Wild America (Snap Case) (1997)

I think the title kind of explains it all really. Three guys going off into the wild of America, on a mission to find a cave filled with a thousand bears, although being told that they sleep alone, the boys don't believe anyone, find the cave, and have loads of adventures along the way!! Jonathan Taylor Thomas played a great part in this movie and he really narrated it well too! As I live in the UK, I was lucky enough to see it while I was in America, I'd always liked Jonathan and Devon's films, and this was another one I HAD TO HAVE!!! I would also say that this is a great film for all the family, only recently has it been released in the UK, but I bought it in America, luckily I have an international VCR. This film is way cool. I would really reccommend it.

Amelie (2001) Review

Amelie (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have seen thousands of films in my life, and thought nothing could surprise me anymore on a screen. Amelie proved me I was wrong. Instead of writing another "best film ever" comment, I would like to give some indications for non-french speaking viewers, as the translation might have made some lines a bit obscure.
Amelie says to Colignon "Meme les artichauds ont du coeur" (Even artichokes have a heart). In french, "un coeur d'artichaud" (an artichoke heart) is a person that falls very often and easily in love.
Colignon calls Amelie "Amelie-melo" (pronounce "ah-may-LEE-may-low") which sounds like "un meli-melo", a muddle or mix-up.
In the cafe, people discuss about time and weather, as the same word "temps" means both "le temps qui passe" (time that passes) and "le temps qu'il fait" (the weather). So goes Hippolito's theory : they speak about the weather because they are afraid of the passing time.
Collignon says about his mother : "Elle a une memoire d'elephant, un elephant de mer" (literally: she has memory like an elephant, a sea elephant). A "sea elephant" is a sort of walrus, and "mer" (sea) and "mere" (mother) are pronounced the same.
When Amelie is in a theater, she watches "Jules & Jim", a movie by Francois Truffaut. There are many references to Truffaut in the movie : Claire Maurier plays the mother in "the 400 blows" and many scenes refer to "Bed and Board", which itself refers to Hitchcock's "Rear window". I still have to figure which was the movie whith Spencer Tracy driving without watching...
When Amelie watches her projected life on TV, a scene that refers to Woody Allen's "Zelig", the voice over is from Frederic Mitterand, nephew of his uncle, who is famous for commenting weddings or funerals of aristocrats on french TV.
The "likes/dislikes" narration was experimented by Jeunet in a short movie "Foutaise" with Dominique Pinon, that will be included in the collector edition of the DVD. It also refers to "La vie, mode d'emploi" (Life: a user's manual) from Georges Perec, although Jeunet admits he could never finish the book.
Most TV scenes are stock shots. The story about the horse running in the Tour de France is true. Most stories told in the film are true, including the one about collecting discarded pictures.
There are numerous references in the movie, including to other Jeunet films. The scene in the mystery train is almost a copy of a similar scene in Alien : Resurrection where Ripley has an almost tender behaviour with the alien.
Finally, "Amelie" comes from "Emily", as Emily Watson was supposed to play the role, and "Poulain" is both a young untrained horse and a chocolate brand. And this is not a coincidence.

As a Japanese living in the United Staes, I can say totally, that this film is amazing. There're some critics says Tom Cruise's acting and so on, however, this film sucessfully depicts the history of Japan, and people's traditional lives and the end of samurai era.
This is a spectacular movie with sweeping sword actions and it is based on the true history events in japan, I've seen a lot of samurai movies(made in japan for japanese) but i can say this one is GREAT as the other movies, plus this is not usual hollywood movies that awfully depicts samurais and even Yakuzas and brush off the truth.
I can say, however, without Tom Cruise, this movie could have also been great as well. But i would guess that it is because of him, this movie gained more attention among people and so typical americans can get the idea of what samurai really is and what they really think.
so overall i gave this movie 5 stars. I plan to go watch it again.

Southern Belles (2005) Review

Southern Belles (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Definitely a buy. I first thought it would be a campy movie that would be a good way to kill two hours with. Wrong... watched it twice in one evening and can't wait to see it with my friend later today.
This movie has so many different nuances and contrasts in it that just watching it the second time makes it worth while. For example, there's a bar fight scene where Belle is sitting leisurely at the bar sipping her beer and scheming while behind her two characters are literally doing a fast paced fist dance scene. Fists up, move twice back then twice forward while partner does the same. They each have a buddy who decides to react differently to the situation. What you think is going to happen in this movie... rarely does.
The more I think about it, the more I appreciate it. I rarely encounter a movie that makes me want to view the script and see where the director added to it but this one does.
The characters are awesome. Justin Chambers is the only one whose work I've seen before. He plays such a different character in this movie as compared to his role as Alex in 'Grey's Anatomy" that it's hard to believe it's even him. His acting is that good. He is a strong, down to earth (literally), character that makes you feel for him. In fact, it would be impossible to not identify with a lot of the characters in the movie.
Sound... whoever did the music in this one knew what they were doing. They knew when to put in the sappy music and when to scratch the album, thereby emphasizing what was going on in that scene and added the voice of the characters instead of usurping it.
Very interesting movie that I highly recommend. I'd love to say more but...
