Kung Fu Rascals Review

This features Primus' Les Claypool as the Sheriff in a funny kung-fu movie that pokes fun at the genre all together, including Bruce Lee! I've seen this over 12 times, then my local video store sold it before I could buy it. I haven't found it anywhere (its been 8 years since then), needless to say I'm a happy camper!

Death to the Supermodels (2005) Review

Death to the Supermodels (2005)

Before I begin my review, let me inform you about the DVD presentation. Audio and video are excellent; there are English subtitles for those of us, including myself, who are hearing impaired. It has a widescreen presentation with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. There is a montage of deleted scenes; an interview with P -one of the supermodels; and a host of trailers. Strangely enough, I didn't see a trailer for "Death to the Supermodels." Now for my review:
During the eighties, there were numerous movies involving psychopaths murdering models, strippers, and ex-prostitutes, i.e., women, and men, who were gorgeous. (One of the more famous ones is "Calendar Girl Murders" starring a young Sharon Stone.) "Death to the Supermodels" is a silly spoof of such movies. Though not as hilarious as the "Scary Movie" franchise, it will make you laugh and provide a diversion from your worries.
The following tagline on the back cover of the DVD jacket grabbed my attention while summing up the film's simple plot: "They're hot. They're stupid. And they're about to get killed." Five of the world's greatest supermodels are lured to a secluded island for a photo shoot that will change the image of Merle Magazine. Each one represents the stereotypical model. Yo - the funniest of the models - is a black ghetto chic with a steroid pumped derriere who starred in a gangsta rap music video; P is a pouting Hispanic girl who only eats on Thursdays and takes bipolar medication; Hoo Chi is a beautiful Asian who breaks boards with her hands and seeks forgiveness from her deceased grandfather for having breast implants; Darbie is a mannequin-like model who never speaks and barely moves; and Eva is the beautiful German who never bathes or shaves her armpits (pittsies), wears a studded dog collar, and keeps insisting she is the number-one-ranked supermodel. Tiffany Courtney (Jaime Pressly of "Poison Ivy - The New Seduction") is the perky assistant who has organized the weekend photo shoot; she is constantly hearing the disembodied voice of her self-help guru Ryan Reginald telling her she is a serial killer who is jealous of the supermodels.
One by one, these silly, self-centered supermodels are killed by an intruder wearing a black ninja outfit. I was hoping the effeminate, asexual photographers would be the first to die because they became tiresome and nauseating very fast. Their constant bickering over spooning grated on my nerves. More time should have been spent on the models, some of whom were very hilarious.
"Death to the Supermodels" was filmed in gorgeous Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, which is rich with Spider Monkeys. It provided the perfect backdrop for this spoof. I wish I could travel there for vacation.
"Death to the Supermodels" is recommended for those who love silly movie spoofs such as the "Scary Movie" series, the "Airplane" series, "Date Movie," "Epic Movie," etc. Unless you can find it at a reasonable price, I recommend renting this movie before purchasing because everyone's tastes in humor are different.

George Lucas in Love (1997) Review

George Lucas in Love (1997)
Average Reviews:

Several reviewers around here really seem to want a lot from a 9 minute film.
'George Lucas In Love' was a very fun short. From Lucas' roommate Benji talking about an 'all powerful force' to his friends Hal & Chuck working on Hal's 'fastest thing on campus' to a professor whose speech patterns resembled a well known Jedi Master, this film has a heck of a lot crammed into it's 9 minutes. If anything, the filmmakers should have done a 15-20 minute film! The film was very clever and enjoyable. Maybe just a tad bit funnier than 'Hardware Wars'.
The music, cinematography, and acting are all very good, indeed. Anyone who didn't enjoy this at least a little really needs to get a sense of humor. Of course, it's a bit cheesy, but it's meant to be that way. It's presented in the slightly corny, overblown way that 'Hardware Wars' or the 'Naked Gun' films were. The same people who didn't understand those films probably won't understand 'George Lucas In Love'. It's not a 'great' film, but who cares? It's a fun little short by a guy who really loves 'Star Wars'. Some have condemned the filmmakers doing this just for the money. I seriously doubt that Mr. Nussbaum will make a huge fortune from this film and if he does, big deal. Nothing wrong with making money from doing what you love or making money at all. Surely, none of the people who reviewed this film would go and work at their jobs for free and live in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere! Anyway, GLIL is great fun and a great to watch before your next screening of 'Phantom Menace' or the original trilogy.

Mafia (1998) Review

Mafia (1998)

I'll admit that I did not like this film the first time I saw it in the theatre. It started out at a snail's pace and seemed equally strained for laughter. However, there was a smattering of truly insightful comic genius throughout that made it mildly enjoyable. Then I watched it on video with a group of people. For some unknown reason I found myself laughing uncontrollably. As I watched the film again I then began to notice how much it followed the GODFATHER saga in parody. Once I began to realize what the filmmakers were doing it all started to take shape and made good comic sense. Not only did it follow the same inspirational format of AIRPLANE but it took the same approach with its audience: if this joke doesn't work for you we have plenty more lined up one after another and eventually you are going to start laughing. What's interesting is that you actually have to listen carefully to what is being said to really get the full effect of this well thought out comedy because it is much more than just a parody.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery/The Spy Who Shagged Me/Goldmember (1997) Review

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery/The Spy Who Shagged Me/Goldmember (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's hard to believe almost 10 years have gone by since we first saw Mike Myers' Austin Powers character for the first time. These are among the funniest films made at the close of the 20th Century. For the most part, they are chock full of sightgags and silly puns and give Mike Myers ample opportunity to wear funny costumes and try out as many joke accents as possible. Myers rises to the occassion each time out, eventually playing 4 characters at once ala Peter Sellers.
As introduced in the first film (International Man of Mystery), Austin is swinging 60s' superspy who thinks he's a lot hipper than he really is. Think Sammy Davis Jr trapped in Davy Jones' body and you'll have an idea of what Austin is like before seeing him. Also introduced in the first film is Dr Evil (also played by Myers), a cross between Blofeld and Ed Sullivan. If anything, Dr. Evil has even better lines and gags than Austin himself.
The three films primarily spoof the James Bond series. The first film has strong overtones of both 'Diamonds are Forever' and 'Casino Royale' but Myers goes totally bonkers in the second film (Spy Who Shagged Me), in which 'Star Wars' and 'Moonraker' are yanked in for a well-deserved ribbing. The second film doesn't break as much ground as the first, but is arguably the funniest of the three as leading lady Heather Graham is the perfect partner in crime to Mike Myers' Austin character. Graham is the funniest of Austin's three leading ladies. Unfortunately, the third film (Goldmember) declines after a very strong start, coming across as a stitched-together effort to wring the last bucks out of the Powers franchise. If the series has a flaw, it's that few of the characters seem drawn from life, rather than pieced together as parodies.
If you like one Austin Powers movie, you'll like all three to various degrees. At this price, this is a good time to replace your battered VHS copies with nice, fresh DVDs.

The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2004) Review

The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Larry Blamire wrote, directed and stars in this spoof of 1950s b&w science fiction movies that entertained audiences on Saturday afternoons. The movie is not perfect, but if you remember with affection films like Plan 9 from Outer Space and Attack of the Crab Monsters, you will laugh out loud many times. Written in 5 days and filmed in 10-1/2, from props to costumes the film captures the look of old sci-fi standards, and is even filmed in Bronson Canyon, the location of many a schlock feature, and uses vintage film music to excellent effect. While the plot, involving a good scientist and an evil scientist (both of whom travel with their microscopes), aliens and their escaped mutant and the evil lost skeleton (bought on eBay for $100), is very good, the script could have used one more rewrite, and the pacing in the middle third is way too slow. I'm giving it five stars despite those problems because I still laughed over and over, and the DVD features were great.
DVD extras include: a Q&A session at the film's 2002 premiere; trailer; a commentary track with Blamire and crew; a cast commentary; bloopers; cartoon; an 11-minute making-of featurette.
If you enjoy old sci-fi classics in spite of, or because of, the visible wires holding the creature costumes together, you should check out this funny and affectionate spoof.

My Name Is Bruce (2008) Review

My Name Is Bruce (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bruce Campbell seems to have a kind of love/hate thing going with his fan base. Sure, like any actor he enjoys having fans, but as he's stated in his book and elsewhere that his fans can get a bit outrageous and push things far. This seems to be what sparked My Name Is Bruce. Here he pokes fun at his fandom as well as his career.
In the film he plays Bruce Campbell, but a more fictional Bruce Campbell. He's egocentric, a drunk, lives in a trailer, un-liked and un-respected by the cast and crew of his films, and just an all around jerk. A teen in a small gold mining town called Gold Lick has mistakenly unleashed the ancient Chinese god of war, Guan-Di, and now the angry god is killing off the folks of Gold Lick. The teen, Jeff, also happens to be a Bruce Campbell fanatic. He manages to kidnap Campbell and bring him to Gold Lick where he has convinced the townspeople that Bruce will destroy the evil demon. Bruce is under the impression that he's doing some kind of movie(it doesn't totally make sense why he'd think that he's in a movie when there's no film crew around or why the townspeople would believe that a horror movie actor could really be a ghost buster, but who cares?). He goes coward when the reality of the situation becomes clear, but soon learns how to be the Bruce Campbell he's always portrayed himself to be.I know what you're thinking! My wife tapped my shoulder half way through the movie and said to me, "this reminds me a lot of the Three Amigos". True, it's a very similar concept-the idea of egocentric actors finding themselves in real danger when they think they're only in "reel" danger, but in the end discover that they are heroes.
Needless to say it is a fun movie. Naturally we're dealing with a comedy here, not a horror film. While the laughs are hit and miss, some of them predictable and a bit cliched, this movie really works because of Bruce. We all know that Bruce has a helluva screen charisma and can singlehandedly carry practically any movie just off of his charm. He also directed this movie. It's low budget of course, and Bruce certainly makes the best of that. He built the town of Gold Lick on his own property in Oregon. The supporting cast is decent too, mostly unknowns. Ted Raimi has multiple roles, each a different nationality, allowing him try multiple accents. His Asian character just isn't funny though. Too much of a stereotype Chinese guy. He reminded me of Mickey Rooney in Breakfast At Tiffany's.
It's great how Campbell makes fun of his fans and fandom, yet doesn't totally insult them. He's also able to take potshots at himself and his career. At one point he steals a kid's bike to get away from Guan-Di, and the kid yells at him, "McHale's Navy sucked!!" Funny stuff. He really lays into his flop, Alien Apocalypse, but thinly disguises it here as a film called Cave Alien. Plus there are many more in-jokes that you will definitely pick up on if you're familiar with many of Campbell's films.
Campbell is touring the country right at the moment showing the film and doing 20-30 minutes Q&A sessions after. I'd highly suggest attending this if possible. It's good support for Bruce as well as low budget cinema in general. Plus the man is a treat to see and hear in person. Just as funny and charming as you think he'd be.

Something evil is stirring in the small mining town of Gold Lick, and it's not happy. Guan-di, the Chinese protector of the dead with a strange affinity for bean curd, has been awakened by reckless teenagers, and now his bloody crusade to wipe out the town's entire population can only be stopped by one man - Bruce Campbell (the guy who starred in all three Evil Dead movies and Bubba Ho-tep), B-move star and deadbeat ex-husband extraordinaire, who's recruited to be their unwitting savior. Thinking the whole scenario's a publicity prank, Bruce is distracted from his mission by a hot mom and fan boys aplenty-- but when our hero has to face off against a dark force more fearsome than a Hollywood agent, the laughs and screams start flying! You don't have to be a fan of figure skating to love ON EDGE, but if you are, it'll kill you. Where else can you get Jason Alexander ("George" from SEINFELD) alongside Kristi Yamaguchi and Scott Hamilton? But they aren't even the best parts of this feel-good satire (a major accomplishment in itself) akin to BEST OF SHOW, because relative newcomers Langer and Winokur steal their scenes. You'll want them to star in the next big thing after they make you believe so intensely in their characters. I saw this at a film festival and haven't been able to get it out of my head, since. Did you like TALK RADIO or LARRY SANDERS? Then you'll love this behind-the-scenes look at skating. It's what those "Up Close and Personal" profiles during the Olympics DON'T show you, but you wish they did.
