The Story of O Part II (1984) Review

The Story of O Part II (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 1984 film The Story of O Part II is often confused with the 1981 film The Fruits of Passion ( les fruits de la passion) with Klaus Kinski. The video on this amazon product page is a different foreign film that takes a stab at the Story of O character. It is also in many ways superior sequel to Fruits of Passion. It has never been release on DVD in the US so it is lesser known. Of course any sequel that attempts to continue the story of "O" won't live up to the original. However, the actress playing "O" here Sandra Wey is the best I've seen in any version other than the original "Story of O" with Corinne Clery. The story doesn't pick up exactly where the original left off. But it is a more realistic idea of what would or could happen to the female character of "O". Sandra Wey plays the updated "O" as an independent woman who is a sort of sexual mercenary. She uses her power of seduction to gain access to a prominent and wealthy family. Hired by a powerful corporation that will stop at nothing to black mail this wealthy business man. "O" finds a way into the family's secluded estate and then systematically begins to seduce each of the family members starting with the young naive daughter. Moving on to her brother, the father, and eventually even the wife. All in a bid to black mail and gain control of their empire.
The film has plenty of highly erotic and sexual charged scenes. It deals with sexual orientation and domination. Sexual taboo's are broken and the inner fantasies of each family member are laid bare to "O". The story has some interesting twist and turns with an intriguing and unpredictable ending.
Even if you're skeptical of a Story of "O" sequel (there are more than a few) I would give this one a chance before any other.

I'll Take Manhattan Review

Great drama of a wealthy family torn between greed, love and running an empire. Starring great actors like Barry Boswick and Jack Scialia and of course Perry King.....what more can you ask for?
An excellent plot that keeps you glued to the screen to see what will happen next. This is a mini series made in the tradition when filmmakers actually knew how to make great mini series and compromised on nothing.
I saw this series on TV in the late 70's and when I saw that it was recently released in DVD I grabbed it. It was so well made that I'll Take Manhattan (the catchy title) just remained a pleasant memory.
Make this great stylish production a part of your memory too and buy a copy. You will not be disappointed and you will be spending some long hours on real quality viewing. It's a PROMISE!!!

Bless the Beasts & Children (1972) Review

Bless the Beasts and Children (1972)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first started going to camp when I was 5 years old, just a year after this film was released, but I didn't see it until a few years later, when it was on TV. The first camp I went to was a co-ed camp. Kids ranged from 5 to 18 and were sometimes in a camp-wide group, but more often than not, age groups and genders were separated. As a group of hyper 5-year-old girls, we were taught some cheesy crafts, we went fishing, a little archery and "snipe" hunting. The purpose of snipe (an imaginary creature) hunting was to supposedly capture a live (never before seen) specimen.
One night we were told the entire camp was going to go on an Armadillo hunt. I was very excited... I had only seen armadillos on TV and I really wanted to be able to pet one (and sneak it home in my luggage if I could!). Little did I realize that some of the older boys had intended on really hunting one of these harmless creatures... right when I saw one, I got to see it blown to bits with a shot gun. There are moments like that that you never forget... a split second where one small part of you that was still a child, dies and turns into an adult... all in the twinkling of an eye.
I related to this movie in a million ways. I was one of those kids that no one noticed and if I had gone missing, no one would have remembered I was ever there until my parents showed up and asked for me. I was accustomed to being picked on at school, so I avoided interaction w/ the other kids and always did what I was told by adults... many of whom had no business being in charge of children.
The movie is slow in many places, but it exacerbates the feeling of lonliness and rejection felt by the group of outcasts in this film. I was in awe when I saw them stand up for what they believed in, rejecting authority and doing everything they could to save what could have very well been the last herd of buffalo on earth. They finally say, "no more! We're tired of crying, and now we're going to fight!"
A few funny moments, but those are there to break the tension... many poignant moments, boys confiding in their friends their deepest fears and longings... and there are the senseless tragic moments.
Even as a child, I was keenly aware from watching the news how endangered buffalo were at the time. While they're so common today as to be served up as alternative beef, when this movie was released there were less than 2,000 living specimens. This film must have certainly inspired a more fervent effort to increase their numbers.
Excellent performances by Billy Mumy, Barry Robins, Miles Chapin and others... not to mention the title song performed by The Carpenters. While I saw this film as a child and I survived the experience, I don't recommend this film for young children. The violence perpetrated against the animals in the film will be extremely upsetting to anyone, but especially to little kids... and some young children may find the film to be too slow to pay attention to at length.
If you haven't seen this film, it is a classic and abounding with great talent in these wise-beyond-their-years characters.

Heart Beat (1980) Review

Heart Beat (1980)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I won't even pretend to be an expert on the Beat movement. I read "On the Road" in college but it didn't leave a lasting imprataur on me. Ditto for Burroughs' "Naked Lunch" which I couldn't get through. I did read Tom Wolfe's account of the Merry Pranksters, "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" as well as Lenny Bruce's bio and enjoyed them thoroughly. I didn't approach "Heart Beat" with high expectations and they were more than transcended. Director John Byrum's film has it's own jazzy rhythms that make it unique and unto itself. We see Jack Kerouac(John Heard) and the Cassadys (Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek) not as leaders of a movement but rugged individualists who defy the norm and go to the beat of their own muses. The film is immeasurably helped by a powerhouse performance by Nolte as Neal Cassady, a real charmer who may be a ne'er-do-well or a rebel. Heard and Spacek are good in more subdued turns as the friend and spouse who at times are repelled then embrace Neal's antics. The late Ray Sharkey gives a great turn as an Allen Ginsburg type as does John Larroquette as a conservative TV host. Terrific period detail from art designer Jack Fisk, Spacek's real-life husband, and gorgeous score from Jack Nietzche. I remember this film received lukewarm critical and commercial success at the time of it's release but it is definitely a film ahead of it's time.

Independence Day (1996) Review

Independence Day (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to say that I'm a big fan of this film, and I already own the DVD. Most of those wanting to buy this film on Bluray are those who have already seen it and liked it, so I won't comment on the movie content itself, but rather the technical and supplemental aspects of this release.
I borrowed a friend's copy of the BD version of ID4 just a few weeks ago, as I was contemplating whether to add this to my small but growing blu-ray collection. The picture and audio are superb, and watching this on my new LCD at 1080p with the lossless DTS-MA audio track really transported me back to the July of '96, when I watched this on the big screen. This movie has certainly aged well these thirteen years, and the special effects are still terrific even today. While watching, I was pretty much set on adding this to my collection.
That is, until after I finished watching the movie and wanted to see the extras in HD.
The DVD version I have contains two discs and a lot of extras, including an alternate ending, making-of feature, trailers, and cast/crew interviews. Sadly, in this BD release there are none, not even in standard definition. The only "extra" is a commentary track, which, as an another reviewer already pointed out, is laughably outdated. At $25, I would expect more than just a movie and nothing else.
The Dark Knight BD had two discs plus a digital copy for the same price- that was justifiable, even in this economy. This... isn't.
FOX is notorious for double-dipping their DVD and Blu-ray releases. I would imagine that a two-disc or dual-layered "special edition" version will come out over the next year or so.
Needless to say, this BD release is quite a disappointment.

Erin Brockovich (2000) Review

Erin Brockovich (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Julia Roberts outdoes herself in yet another David and Goliath struggle based on a true story. Erin Brockovich (Roberts) is a down-on-her-luck mother of three who can't seem to hold down a job. After having an auto accident, she makes a bumpy transition from client to employee at the law firm and stumbles onto a case with staggering implications. It seems that utility giant PG&E has poisoned the groundwater and the local residents are getting gravely ill.
The story starts poorly with scenes of Erin looking for jobs and botching her accident case. The first twenty minutes of the film could have been condensed into five. However, once the investigation of the case begins, the story is engrossing. It is a powerful and well written human interest drama centered on a tough and smart (though crude) woman who leads a passionate crusade on behalf of the victims.
Director Steven Soderberg played it straight in filming this after his extremely avant-garde effort in "The Limey". His key strength here was the direction of the actors with both Julia Roberts and Albert Finney giving excellent interpretations of their characters. However, my only negative criticism of the film was the way Erin's boyfriend George was presented. George is a grubby tattoo covered biker (the tattoo on his left shoulder says "DIRTY") who behaves like Ward Cleaver with a ponytail. He is genteel, articulate, level headed, patient, sensitive and kind. All of this is so disconnected with his lifestyle that it seems inconceivable that a character this wonderful could possibly come in this package.
Julia Roberts' gave a superlative performance that smashed any myth about her inability as a dramatic actor. A far cry from her accustomed lightweight romantic characters, her portrayal of Brockovich was gritty, raw and audacious. Emotionally, she commanded states from manipulative vamp and vicious harpy to sympathetic confidant and indignant crusader. This is unquestionably her best performance and legitimizes her as one of the more versatile actresses in Hollywood.
Albert Finney also gave a fine performance as the bumbling but effective curmudgeon of a lawyer. He was simultaneously obnoxious and charming and created a good contrast to Roberts' character. The two of them had terrific chemistry.
Aaron Eckhart was lovable as George, although as mentioned above, the character's forbearing personality didn't jibe with his rebellious culture. However, I put more of the responsibility for this on the director than on the actor.
The DVD has some excellent comments by the real Erin Brockovich that lend credibility to the story. However, Brockovich is so toned down in these interviews, it makes Roberts' portrayal seem like an exaggeration.
This is an excellent story that is well and believably dramatized. I rated it an 8/10. For viewers who enjoy strong dramatic performances and who are not offended by liberal profanity, I recommend it highly.

Totally awesome movie with jokes and sight gags galore. Eddie Murphy is one talented man playing all those roles of the Cletus family plus Buddy Love. A little crude yet but alot of laughing......gas!
Definitely pick this one up and pass on the sequel as that one overdoses on the fart jokes. This one uses a multi-joke formula all the way to success.

Secret Garden (1987) Review

Secret Garden (1987)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have now seen two other versions of The Secret Garden, and this one (the first I ever saw) Remains my favorite. The reason is I have a couple problems with the other versions
In the old 1949 Edition, Mary wasn't portrayed correctly. She's supposed to be (at the beginning) a girl with an attitude (for lack of a better way to put it.) She's supposed to be completely emotionally unnafected by her parent's death (according to the book)as they had never attempted to spend time with her. In the old 1949 version, Mary has an emotional outburst upon learning of her parent's death. That is out of charachter. In this version, she's more concerned about the doll she dropped when she was told. Her attitude in this 1987 version seems more in charachter.
In the 1993 version I do not like the way they took the concept of "magic" and twisted it into a seance in the garden. That is extremely out of charachter with the book. When the book speaks of "Magic" it almost hints at miricles/the hand of God. This 1987 movie kept in charachter with that.
Basically, I think this version is truer to the mysterious (in a good way) tone of the book. the manor is beautiful! and the whole scenery is in charachter with the book. The only thing they contradicted the book in was having Mary and Colin not related. In the book they're cousins. But in this version they're unrelated, which is obviously because they have Mary and Colin getting married. The only thing I would change is the actors that played the two boys, Colin and Dicken. They were pretty good actors, but both were too old. Dickon should have been someone more Mary's age, and the actor that played Colin (although he has a sufficient baby face) reveals his real age at the end when he can stand up and walk. Way too tall. Look at the scene with him and his father walking together in the garden. Colin's way to tall to be 10 (his supposed age). Other than that, this is a superb version of the movie, which any Secret Garden fan should own. Hallmark has quality! (insert gold crown here)

Armageddon (1998) Review

Armageddon (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Criterion Collection release of Armageddon is a treat. It offers 2 commentary tracks, one featuring the director Michael Bay, actors Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has comments on several interesting things. Affleck's commentary is sometimes very funny. The other commentary track features the Director of Photography and special effects people.
The commentary includes interesting details, including background information on the characters and filming locations. Note: The commentary is raw and sometimes laced with profanity, although the movie itself is rated PG-13, for reasons explained in the commentary.
Although it's not much, this collection is also a Director's Cut and has a couple scenes added, notable of which is Harry Stamper's character visiting his father before launch. Some other scenes are cut slightly differently, adding some depth to the story.
The Gag reel on the second disk is extremely funny, raw, and not your typical "behind-the-scenes" documentary.
The second disk also features a tremendous amount of information on the special effects and includes many different trailers and promo material. The Aerosmith song video is also included.
While the story can be nit-picked, it's still very exciting and enjoyable.
Overall, if you liked the movie, the Criterion Collection release is the DVD to have.

From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed PEARL HARBOR and THE ROCK (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- ARMAGEDDON! Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow.

A Kid In King Arthur's Court (1995) Review

A Kid In King Arthur's Court (1995)
Average Reviews:

No matter how many times I watch this movie, or the older I get, I am still in love with it! Being a fan of the time of King Arthur, and time travel without the use of science fiction novel tactics, this movie was a thrill for me to watch!
The lead character, Calvin, is a less than popular guy back in his home town of Receda, California. When he is suddenly thrown through time with the help of Merlin, he finds himself in a completely different world. Although the plot doesn't exactly follow any of the stories of King Arthur (i.e. King Aurthur and Guinevere never had any kids, obviously. She ran away w/ Lancelot) but it has the romantic appeal of the time period, and Calvin's friendships with the king and his youngest daughter, Princess Catherine are wonderful! As it goes on, his character flaws are sraightened out and he becomes a stronger person, faced with many tasks most persons never endure. The final scene's tie it all together until he finally goes home, and realizes he can be the person he aspires to.
The film is absolutely wonderful with the adventure, romance, and humor tying togther to make a memorable occassion. I strongly suggest A Kid in King Arthur's Court to anyone who wants a great time, a laugh and a smile!

Coopers' Christmas Review

Coopers' Christmas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Coopers Christmas is one of those films you either love or hate. Being a film viewer who loves the offbeat productions (Man With the Screaming Brain, Bride and the Gorilla), this one is alright.
Films of this genre often hit and miss in the same scenes. This film is like that. It is both funny, vulgar, and crude at the same time. The 1985 family christmas of the Coopers goes awry when Uncle Nick arrives to spend the holiday with them. Christmas turns from fun to fanatic. There is physical comedy, dirty comedy, and innuendo. Much like Cheech and Chong, the comedy works at many levels.
One key element of the film is the VHS video camera. Having been filmed from an early age by our father in 8 mm, VHS, then beta, hi 8 and now digital 8, you just can't replace the first family videos as much as you might like to.
The film stars Samantha Bee, Jason Jones, Dylan Everett, and Mike Beaver. Some film casts just work well.
If you are fans of National Lampoons' productions, then you will like this one.

Jurassic Park (1993) Review

Jurassic Park (1993)

When a rich entrapreneur finances a bold experiment, and succeeds in the cloning of Dinosaurs, he needs the authorization of a few experts and critics to ok his new attraction after a fatal accident occurs. However, during the tour, a Tropical Storm hits the secluded island of Isla Nublar, and all hell breaks loose....and that pretty much sums up one of the greatest movies ever to grace the silver screen. It was only a matter of time before the release of the Special Edition DVD.
Usually when you see the words 'Special Edition' you can look forward to Deleted Scenes, Outtakes and behind the scenes documentaries. Well, unfortunately, there really isn't much anything 'special' about this. Don't get me wrong, the quality of the movie is outstanding. I have never seen the movie in such great sound and picture quality before. There are a few 'making of' documentaries and other related things. There are also a few trailers. However, there is some footage that is still missing from the movie, footage that was NOT cut in the theatrical release, but was cut in the transition to home video. Now on DVD you would expect some of these scenes back. That is not the case. There really isnt much making the DVD 'special' other than its incredibly high quality and behind the scenes documentaries. There are also some fun facts about the Dinosaurs on the island, but it still feels like there could have been more. All in all, a very good DVD, a must own for fans of the movie.

Steven Spielberg's 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he'd ever made prior to Schindler's List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichton's novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg's Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there's no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T-rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. --Tom Keogh

Jumanji (1995) Review

Jumanji (1995)

When Alan Parrish finds an old board game in a construction site, he has no clue what awaits him. When he and friend Sarah Whittle start to play, he is pulled into the game and she is chased from the house by bats. Fast-forward 26 years to when brother and sister Peter and Judy Shepherd start to play. They free a now grown Alan from the game, but in the process release monkeys, mosquitoes, and a lion. They realize they must finish the game to make everything return to normal. Reuniting with the adult Sarah, they attempt to stay alive long enough to do just that.
This movie is a fantastic fantasy/action movie. It starts out well, and the suspense continues to build until the climax. At the same time, it's got some great one-liners and funny scenes to break the tension. The entire cast does well with the material, including all the special effects. The special effects show their age today and are a bit more stylized then realistic, but they serve the movie well.
A word of warning to parents. This is a very intense movie. Even though it was marketed as a family movie, many small kids will be frightened by it. Keeping that in mind, you might want to preview it before you show it to them.
This DVD is a perfect showcase for the movie. The picture is sharp, and the surround sound puts you right in the middle of the action. There is a commentary and two documentaries from the special effects team that give you insight into how they brought the animals in the film to life. If you're looking to purchase this film, this is the version to get.
Jumanji is an action movie that gets it right. It has the perfect mix of character and story supported by special effects. Pick it up today and be prepared to leave your world behind.
