Finally, Deodato's first cannibal epic gets a re-release in it's uncut
format - having been out of print for years ever since it's very rare mid 80's vhs release from Video City. The new DVD from Shriek Show touts "uncut for the first time in the US!!" which is somewhat untrue since the Video City tape was also uncut. In fact, the print on the old Video City vhs release ran 91 1/2 minutes, whereas the new DVD only runs 88 minutes (but this appears to be only due to the projection speed or NTSC/PAL difference - the DVD runs slightly faster). However, the new
DVD can be called even more "uncut" since it is now in widescreen. The old VHS suffered from horrible pan-and-scan which elimated important information (including in one early scene - a quick glimpse of a cannibal's face in an airplane window - completely off-screen on the old VHS even though there's an audio shock sound accompanying it). In fact, not only is there extra substantial information to the left and right of the screen, but the DVD even adds a sliver to the top and bottom! The DVD is a great looking presentation compared to the old vhs - no question.
Shriek Show delivers the goods with this release. I've heard some differing opinions on the quality of the transfer of the film, but I must say, I am totally satisfied with the job they've done here. Although not 100% perfect, the anamorphic widescreen image is crisp, colorful and sharp - and it does not suffer from any blatant artifacting or shifting. Aside from some Very minor blotchiness in a scene near the end at the river, it looks great throughout. No complaints. Also featured on this DVD is an audio commentary by Deodato (in italian!), but if you don't speak italian you can watch the movie with the english subtitle translation of his commentary! The subtitles are mostly in the black bar underneath the lbx film so they don't really interfere with the image.
And is this commentary a hoot or what!?! Deodato keeps saying "this is a realistic movie","everything is real", "this scene is real", "isn't this scene real", "nothing is fake", "everything is real", etc. You get the idea? He also contradicts his own previous statements and claims he had nothing to do with the numerous animal torture-killing scenes and blames them all on the producer. He says the producer shot and added all of these scenes to the film afterwards to satisfy East Asian markets. But look at the alligator scene -- Deodato says the skinning part of it was shot later in Singapore with the skinners playing the cannibals - but then we cut to a long shot obviously directed by Deodato of the skinned alligator right back where the scene started. Hmmm. It's also funny to hear him say later that the producer died years ago - thus, the guy has no way to defend these statements and accusations himself. All quite amusing - gotta love Deodato!
Other extras on the DVD include short on-camera interviews with stars Massimo Fosche and Ivan Rassimov (looking old) plus a still/promo art gallery, a weird US trailer (as "Last Cannibal World") which doesn't look like a US trailer at all ... I remember the film getting a US release in my town as "The Last Survivor" - wish that trailer could have been
included. There are a few bonus trailers for upcoming Shriek Show releases such as "Beyond the Darkness" (Buried Alive), "Nights of Terror" (Burial Ground), "Zombie Holocaust" and "Eaten Alive". Plus, to top it all off, inside the keepcase are 10 miniature lobby cards!
So, if you're a cannibal junkie, this is one to devour. It's no "Cannibal Holocaust" and suffers from a somewhat simplistic script, but
there's enough grue and nudity to satisfy gorehounds and enough animal cruelty to enrage everyone else. It ain't pretty, folks, but it is one of a kind. They don't make 'em like this anymore and even though Deodato says he wants to now make "Cannibal Holocaust 2001" (too late ruggero!) - - don't hold your breath. This is a long-dead genre destined to stay that way. Bon appetit!

The next year after Dr. Lamb Danny Lee as a director shot The Untold Story which came out to be a bit better than Dr. Lamb and became somewhat classic in the circles of gorehounds and category III movie lovers. But in Dr. Lamb some elements can be found that later made The Untold Story so popular.
In the beginning of Dr. Lamb police arrest a taxi driver accusing him in a number of girl murders throughout Hong Kong. Young man doesn't want to confess at first, but finally starts telling his story, and we see the rest of the film as a flashback. Dr. Lamb is pretty gory, with notorious episodes for example of woman's breast being cut off or chunks of human meat floating in a fish tank, although with nothing overly-disturbing which can shock those who's seen plenty of such movies. And altogether Dr. Lamb could become totally senseless and stupid exploitation schlock like, say Ebola Syndrome, but it didn't.
Danny Lee turned this gorefest into a pretty serious film. I wouldn't call it a drama, but it definately is much more than your ordinary splatter movie. As The Untold Story makes a sudden turn after the cannibal is seized, Dr. Lamb keeps it realistic from the very beginning. We see the taxi driver's family which doesn't want to believe that their relative is guilty, but as soon as he confesses they all turn their backs on him. We see this guy being interrogated in a police precinct and how cops - calling a spade a spade - torture him to get a confession. At this moment you don't even know whom to feel for - cops or a murderer. Dr. Lamb at many points turns out to be pretty ambiguous and thoughtful albeit it doesn't necessarily have to. It strongly reminded me of William Lustig's Maniac. This is the case when an exploitation film happens to be something more, and that's always a nice surprise for a viewer.

The DVD itself is a very satisfying package - we get commentaries, a beautiful transfer. Whether the film itself really has any merit depends on personal taste really. For my money, this is not a patch on Deodato's excellent Cannibal Holocaust, which is just as gory and a hell of a lot more realistic, with believable actors and an intelligent script. In comparison, Ferox seems like just an exploitative rip-off. But taken in its own terms, Cannibal Ferox does deliver the goods (I'm talking gore-wise) with hard-to-watch sexual violence accompanying genuine animal deaths. The music is cheesy, and again not up to the standards of Holocaust, but it grows on you.
Overall, this Holocaust rip-off is obviously a must-buy for italian cannibal/gore fans (legions ahead of rubbish like Eaten Alive etc). People new to the genre may do best to check out Cannibal Holocaust (availible on import from europe) first, as it is cinematically far better although harder to watch. But if you're in the mood for a little mindless gore, and don't mind certain scenes looking a tad unrealistic not to mention the laughable dialogue, you could do far worse.

Have you ever seen one of those movies that shows you images you wish you hadn't seen? A movie that leaves you feeling disgusted but overwhelmed with thoughts you never believed existed inside you? No? If the previous statements haven't turned you off already, All Night Long 3 might be an experience to consider.
The second sequel in this most unique series is not one that is easily forgotten. Portraying an adolescent male and his obsession with an older woman in his neighborhood, nothing is left to the imagination. Certain scenes push the boundaries of acceptable taste, and makes one wonder if the director is looking to attain pure exploitation. The concept of "human beings as garbage" is intruiging, but far too convoluted to be taken seriously.
So why five stars? Sometimes, certain aspects of a movie can be greater than the sum of its parts. In this case, the atmosphere is what makes the film so phenomenal. The music and the overall look of the film combine to envelop the viewer into a nightmare never before captured on film. It is certainly not a movie that will be appreciated by the majority of the population, but for those willing to endure such an ugly movie(their is no other word for it), they will be rewarded with images that will haunt them forever.

This might ave been a good movie, had it had more money spent on it.
Unfortunately its shortcomings are all too obvious. The acting is beyond cretinous, the camerawork shoddy, and the picture grainy and wobbly.
Sound is also chronic in parts with voice sound volume decreasing abruptly when actors walk away from the boom mike.
Although the gore is plenteous and quite well delivered, it seemed that Mr Cavalline was just direcing a series of horrific scenes to shock.
There was no cohesion and it came across like he was trying just that bit too hard. There is not much (if any)storyline, so all in all not a success.
I'd recommend this film to horror boneheads who can understand gore when they see it, but would be confused by any semblance of plot or realistic acting. Strictly Amateur Hour i'm afraid.
PS Ignore Todd Proesl's review. Not only does he "act" in this film, he is the worst "actor" in the entire thing.

Over the past couple of years it seems the direct to video market has been inundated by a glut of small studio horror movies. Out of those, this is one of the gems.
A Count, maddened with grief and sadness over his dying, plague stricken bride strikes a deal with the devil that will save his one true love, but it costs him his soul, and turns him into a werewolf. Centuries later, his last descendant is told of a vast family fortune. Striking a bargain with a psychic and a film crew they all head to the castle, stumbling into centuries old intrigue and blood shed.
Yes, it's campy. Yes, it's filled with senseless sex scenes that border on soft core porn. But, yes, it's fast paced and a lot of fun.
When you're feeling like kicking back, watching a movie that will make you smile, and not make you think, this is a great choice.

I think nearly every horror movie fan is aware of the notorious "Guinea Pig" series by now. If you like horror films or gory curiosities and aren't aware of this explosive series of Japanese movies, you ought to rush out right now and see a few of them. Made throughout the 1980s and 1990s, "Guinea Pig" pushes envelopes few people in this country would ever conceive possible. After viewing one of these repugnant films, a natural impulse is one of extreme revulsion. Why would anyone create such soul shattering images? It's important to remember that Japanese audiences possess a different attitude about horror films. As far as I can tell, in Japanese cinema anything and everything is fair game. A typical jaunt through the wilderness of Asian horror cinema (in which Japan plays a significant role) typically reveals graphic scenes of dismemberment, torture, and other no-no nasty behavior that rarely, if ever, appears in American films. Some films containing such stomach churning themes do occasionally rear their heads on this side of the pond, but these films rarely play to a wide audience. In Japan, the "Guinea Pig" franchise was a spectacular hit.
I haven't seen all of the films in this series, but out of the two installments I have watched, "The Flower of Flesh and Blood" easily wins the prize for outright sleaze and nastiness. It's difficult to imagine any film approaching (or descending to) the levels seen in this mind blasting forty-minute movie. Even Pier Paolo Pasolini's sickening homage to the evils of fascism, "Salo," fails to invoke the visceral sensations that "The Flower of Flesh and Blood" wallows in. This movie is a sledgehammer blow to the head and stomach with its unrelenting scenes of carnage and depravity. They ought to sell copies of this wrapped in a barf bag.
Manga artist Hideshi Hino directed this nightmarish look into the activities of a sadistic serial killer. That we know this guy is a serial killer and that he likes to stalk his prey before committing a brutal murder constitutes the plot in its entirety. There simply isn't much more here than a short stalking scene at the beginning of the story followed by a thirty-minute dismemberment filmed in nauseatingly sadistic detail. That's right, folks: "The Flower of Flesh and Blood" exists to show the viewer what it might be like to watch a snuff film.
Forget about character development. Two characters exist in this movie: the poor young woman picked up by the killer, and the killer himself. At least they made the murderer look like a complete psycho, as the guy wears a samurai helmet, a full body leather apron, and some sort of black caps on several of his teeth. This gentleman does not fit the bill of a role model in any way, shape, or form. He's a degenerate who likes to wax philosophic between removing arms and legs, blurting out weird lines about how his next activity will imitate blooming flowers and the like. At the end of the movie, he sings a melancholy song about sending people to the underworld. He also shines a different colored light on his victim at various times, although why he does this makes little sense. The majority of the film takes place in some seedy basement splashed with blood and filled with numerous tools of pain. Then you watch this guy commit his atrocities and that's it. There is nothing more to "The Flower of Flesh and Blood" than close up shots of bloody mayhem.
The DVD contains many interesting extras. There are several trailers from the other installments in the "Guinea Pig" series, one for the zombie film "Junk," several text interviews with director Hideshi Hino, an overview of the controversy involving Charlie Sheen (who supposedly saw this film and believed it was a real snuff film), a behind the scenes look at the special effects involved in the series, and a reproduction of a manga comic book with loose ties to the film written and illustrated by Hino. The documentary on the special effects provides some comfort after watching the gruesome movie, showing that it is all nothing more than a well made horror film. Still, I'm uncomfortable with the knowledge that "The Flower of Flesh and Blood" made such a big splash with Japanese audiences. Remember, this is the same country that committed the atrocities in Manchuria during the late 1930s, and there are still people living in Japan today who were intimately involved in mass murder and mass torture throughout Asia during World War II.
I think this entry in the "Guinea Pig" series ultimately fails to deliver the goods. As a gorehound, I appreciated the awesome special effects displayed in the movie, but the movie never rises to the occasion in terms of character development and plot. I watched the other Hino directed entry in the series, "Mermaid in a Manhole," a few years ago and I thought it well developed and interesting. In that film, which contained numerous graphic scenes, Hino developed a plot heavy on human suffering that showed emotional pain as a real tragedy. In "The Flower of Flesh and Blood," he indulges in sadism for the mere sake of sensationalism. If you really want to see this movie, just steel yourself for the depths of degradation. If you have kids in the house, don't even think about buying this film if there is any chance your children might find it. This is not acceptable viewing for youngsters, and it probably isn't acceptable viewing for most people. Beware, oh beware! "The Flower of Flesh and Blood" is upon you!

This double-feature DVD includes two 1970s exploitation flicks from British director Norman J. Warren: SATAN'S SLAVE (1976) and TERROR (1978). Both films were penned by David McGillivray, who also scripted two excellent films--HOUSE OF WHIPCORD (1974) and FRIGHTMARE (1974)--from the better-known director of British horror and exploitation, Pete Walker.
SATAN'S SLAVE, the weaker of these two films, stars beautiful Candace Glendenning as a young woman who is the descendant of a powerful and evil witch. After her parents are killed in a suspicious accident, she goes to live with an uncle and his son, and soon after she discovers that her relatives plan to sacrifice her during a ritual that will resurrect her infamous ancestor.
While the acting is okay and the directing adequate, the script for SATAN'S SLAVE is rather uneven and the plot is overly convoluted and hard to follow. As an exploitation horror flick, however, this film delivers the goods with plenty of gratuitous nudity and numerous gore shots that include a smashed head, a bloody suicide, and a gruesome eyeball stabbing.
The second film, TERROR, is the actual highlight of this double feature. It opens as a mob of medieval villagers capture a fleeing witch and attempt to burn her at the stake. The witch calls upon satanic forces to rescue her from her the flames, and as she escapes, she places a curse upon the descendants of the noblewoman who incited the villagers to rise up against her. This entire scene is then revealed to be the ending of a horror film, and the filmmaker claims that the story is based upon true events from his own family history. He and his female cousin, he says, are the last descendants of the noblewoman whose family was cursed by the witch. Naturally, there is skepticism among the audience for whom he has just screened the film. But at a wrap party later that evening, the filmmaker's cousin falls into a trance and attacks him with a sword...and he and his cousin begin to worry that the family curse just might be real after all.
Like the other film on this DVD, TERROR has a fair amount of female nudity--the stripper in the nightclub scene is especially eye-popping--and lots of outré gore. But this film also has a logical, comprehensible story line that is bolstered by strong performances and able directing, and the exceptional production design and cinematography create an ambiance that is exponentially eerier than that of SATAN'S SLAVE. Indeed, hardcore horror fans will recognize the distinct influence of giallo master Dario Argento on this film, especially in regards to atmosphere and gore.
This double-feature DVD offers both films at their original theatrical aspect ratios (enhanced for 16x9 TVs), and though the prints used for the transfers aren't in perfect condition, the images are very good and the soundtracks are fairly crisp and clear. Bonus materials on the DVD include a handful of trailers for other 1970s-era grindhouse and exploitation films, as well as a "grindhouse experience" option that allows you to watch both films back-to-back with concession-stand adverts and trailers inserted therein. It's almost like being in one of Manhattan's 42nd Street theaters back in the grindhouse heyday.

Japanese people are just plain scary. I'm not being prejudiced, because I love the Japanese but they have created some of the most gut wrenching and mortifying movies ever made. Audition and the Guinea Pig series come to mind. But this puts those to shame (except maybe Devil's Experiment, and Flowers of Flesh and Blood) as one of the most unsettling films ever made.
All Night Long:
The story in this one is three guys are one day standing at a railroad crossing waiting for the bars to raise up, when a crazed man comes up to a girl. The man kills the girl right in front of the three guys. And then was about to murder one of them when another rams the guy with his motorcycle. The three decide to celebrate by having a "party" in which they are all to bring a girl over for some fun. One of the guys actually falls in love with the girl he was going to bring to the party, but is murdered by a group of young men that bully and harass people. The guy goes insane and gets the others to come with him to kill the group. When one tries to back out. He is threatened that when they are done with the group they'll come and kill him.
The movie is quite unsettling and quite graphic in its portrayl of rape and murder. It especially show rather effectively one of the character's descent into insanity.
All Night Long 2: Atrocity:
The best of the three on this collection in my opinion. The story focuses on a nerdy student named Shinichi during his summer vacation. Shinichi is a shy and quiet individual who's only solice in life comes from painting a model of a nude manga girl. One day A rich kid and his gang of thugs start picking on Shinichi. They beat him up and torch his model. Then one day Shinichi is visited by the leader of the thugs. Claiming that he wouldn't be harmed, Shinichi takes the invitation to go to the leaders home. There the leader shows Shinichi a girl that one of the thugs have kidnapped, and raped. the leader shows Shinichi how he is capable of being abusive, and cruel to people that are "trash." This movie is more F***ed up than the first ANL movie. Maybe it is because it looks like it was filmed with a personal camcorder, and was made on a relatively low budget. This movie was actually more upsetting than the most vile of the Guinea Pig movies. This one is definitely not for the weak of heart or stomach.
All Night Long 3: Final Atrocity:
First off I would like to say that the title is misleading, there are two more All Night Long movies that were made after this one. This one was actually sort of a letdown, especially after the great horror that was Atrocity. Although this one is a bit more offensive. It focuses on Kiku, a mentally handicapped guy who works in a love hotel. He is a normal person until one night he comes across some of a female neighbor's garbage. He takes it home and nails some of it to his walls. I'm talking everything even used tampons. He then starts becoming obsessed with this girl. Always stealing her garbage, leering at her at her work. He even gets pissed when a guy takes her to the love hotel he works at. He also meets up with an old man who has been doing the same thing Kiku has been doing, stealing people's garbage, but he's been doing it for years. Kitamura (the director) really shows off the message of the movie series, that message being, humans are garbage, in this movie.
In short this is one of the most f***ed up series of movies to ever have been released. If you are the type that is easily upset by this style of movie you should avoid it like the plague. It is deeply disturbing and makes you say WTF more than once after you have watched them. If your into Guinea Pig, Audition, or Ebola Syndrome you would like this collection. Just be prepared for a sickening experience. Also if you're thinking about buying these movies, buy the boxset. It only costs thirty dollars, for all three of them. That is more cost effective than buying all of three of them seperately for around ninety dollars.

Let's face it, you're not here for a story.
Yeah there is one, with a deep message about excess.
But you're here for the blood.
And when it rains, boy does it pour.
If you're freaked out by self-mutilation, give this one a pass.
I personally had to pause this movie a number of times to make it through.
It takes a while for the gore to get going,
(there is a story here after all)
But once it does, grab your umbrella.
Here's what it's about:
Eiji infects his mothers 3 patients (all women testing out a new contraceptive)
with the ultimate pain-killer,
A pain-killer that turns pain into mounting pleasure.
This in turn, has disasterous effects.
One pateint is obsessed with eating
Another patient is obsessed with beauty
And the last suffers from extreme insomnia.
(She hooks herself up to a cactus, in order to sleep. Why? I have no idea)
***GORE SPOILER***
In this flick you'll see:
- one woman eat herself alive (hands, eyes, nips, and bajingo)
- another pierce herself to death (and I mean pierce)
- & a guy crawl into a woman's open chest cavity.
Sound up your alley?MORAL OF THE STORY:
The pain of life cannot be masked by excessive pleasure.
It will consume you.

the first time i tried to watch "august underground's mordum" a few years ago, i had to stop after about ten minutes because it immediately felt like a pointless film that would've wasted my time. recently, i sat down to watch the whole thing through. i really should've heeded my first instincts. this movie is absolute scheisse.
these words are not written out of disgust with the shocking footage. (i'm somewhat desensitized to violence at this point in my life.) rather, this movie is just utterly boring and lacks any redeeming value whatsoever. there's no plot in this simulated snuff film. the badly acted one-dimensional characters just torture and kill people for no reason and that's basically the entire movie, aside from some random footage depicting the killers' everyday lives, sprinkled in to give the viewer respite from all the torture. there's no setup, motivation or direction to any of this. all the scenes are just spliced together with no real transitions. on top of that, throw in some loud annoying cursing, screaming and laughing all the time in place of a soundtrack or real dialogue. yeah. and then it all finally mercifully ends! i like horror movies, but this is not a horror movie. it is a trial to test your patience. if you're not easily shocked, prepare to be extremely bored. if you are easily shocked, then you'll probably turn off this film long before reaching the so-called "ending" for other reasons.
at least critics can praise the cinematography when they dislike everything else about a movie. well, not here. there's not a drop of "cinematography" to be found in this movie. the worst part is the shaky out-of-focus hand-held camera work. ugh. the washed out colors and grainy shots destroy much of any aesthetic appeal to the special effects. in short, this movie looks like crap. crap shot on a broken camera, no less.
the movie that previously held the title of "worst movie i've ever seen" was the japanese simulated snuff film "guinea pig: the devil's experiment." i stopped watching that about ten minutes in as well. i didn't think it was possible, but "mordum" somehow became a new winner. congratulations are in order.
there's something about the dark side of human nature that has always been fascinating. it manages to revolt and attract at the same time. we seek it out to remind ourselves of the uncivilized animal we have been and could be still. if you wish to see man's inhumanity to man on film, try watching "salo, or the 120 days of sodom," pasolini's interesting adaption of the marquis de sade's novel. on the other hand, you could also spend some time watching the military channel to appreciate the positive aspects to the art and application of concentrated violence. however, if you must watch "mordum" out of morbid curiosity (like i did), try not to pay too much. there's a decent chance you will stop watching after the first few minutes, out of moral disgust, or out of sheer boredom.

While this is yet another movie I own about people disappearing in New Jersey, it's nothing like Nothing But Trouble. This is not a wonderful comedy with a roller coaster of death, this is some kind of bizarre misogynistic bondage and psychological horror movie. It's pretty well made in terms of camera work, acting, etc. And it makes me uncomfortable to watch it. The treatment of women is horrific. They're just beautiful bodies for impregnating or organ harvesting. Men too, but not as much. The problem is that the abuse isn't portrayed stylistically. This movie portrays the abuse in a clinical realistic way. In the movie A Boy And His Dog, they strap the man down to harvest his sperm to impregnate women and its hilarious. In this movie, they kidnap men and kidnap women and they force to have sex with tasers, and they kill people who refuse to have sex or fail to achieve pregnancy by wrapping their heads in plastic and making them suffocate to death.
On the plus side, it has lots of nudity. On the down side: it's absolutely horrifying and patently offensive.

By now everybody knows that "Chaos" is supposedly a violent, unrestrained film. It IS violent, and yet restrained, it's one of those films that promises a lot with it's hype and premise, and in this case delivers something FAR below expectations. You know your production is in trouble when the director is a guy who calls himself "The Demon," in this case David "The Demon" DeFalco. Oh DeFalco has spent a lot of time and energy defending the piece as a look at "real life" and pure evil blah blah blah, claiming this is the most brutal movie ever made eventhough Mel Gibson's "The Passion Of The Christ" outdoes the film in pure blood and violence, DeFalco and his producer have also been waging a childish print and video debate with Roger Ebert who rightfully gave the movie zero stars. At the end of the day what brings "Chaos" down isn't the subject matter, but the mere fact that this is pretty poor filmmaking. First there's the look of the movie, it looks like a straight to video production with really simple, pale lighting that doesn't even make the movie look sinister. This really looks more like a first term student film by students still learning to use the equipment. The camera work consists of a few hand held shots and pretty basic framing, nothing too intense. The actors are also very unconvincing, they deliver either performances that come off as too cheesy or too overdone. The biggest problem here though is the script which is so poorly crafted. Characters are cardboard cut-outs with no personality, they merely exist for the purposes of running, grinning, screaming and looking tough or scared. The dialogue is laughable and the story advances with such a choppy, simple rhythm that we can't take any of it seriously. The violence itself only reaches a shocking climax in two scenes, this is not a non-stop orgy of death and killing, in fact, I found the movie to be quite restrained. Oh sure the nipple slicing scene is pretty grotesque, and the final murder in the woods is also birthed from a disturbing use of the imagination, but a more intense, graphic movie would be Meir Zarchi's "I Spit On Your Grave" which makes "Chaos" look like child's play, or Pasolini's "Salo" based on the Marquis De Sade's "120 Days Of Sodom." DeFalco also needs to be a little more original, movie buffs are already signaling out all the obvious "Last House On The Left" rip-offs present in the movie. I see the film more as one of those cheesy attempts by a guy who thinks he's tapped into reality at trying to make "something real" when in fact it doesn't feel real at all. Evil is a topic best looked at when it's done with a balanced blend of violence and psychology as in "The Silence Of The Lambs," "Seven," "The Exorcist," and horror works best when it is attempted with a real sense of the disturbing and gritty as with the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." "Chaos" is more of a geek show, with scenes of pain, breasts and slobbering villains in a B-movie setting. This is not the most brutal movie ever made, or one of the best, or one worth checking out.

A zombie film, yes, but do not expect a traditional zombie experience when viewing They Came Back. These zombies do not seek to gorge human flesh, or to frighten the audience. Instead the director Robin Campillo delivers a cerebrally stimulating narration of the return of the dead in his directorial début. Before making this non-traditional zombie film Campillo co-wrote and edited Laurent Cantet's memorable Time Out (2001), which offered a thoughtful tale of a laid-off office worker that takes his destiny in his own hands. There are stronger similarities between Time Out and They Came Back than between this zombie film and any of the more traditional zombie films such as Night of the Living Dead (1968).
Without delay the audience is informed about the sudden return of more than 70 million people, and approximately 13,000 have come back from the dead in the town in which the story takes place. These people who have returned have passed away within the last ten years, which means that there are many familiar faces among the returnees. They all wear light colored clothing and seem to be in excellent condition. This means that they will not have the familiar zombie look with decaying body parts or the peculiar gangly movement. Nothing seems to be different between them and the living with the exception of a blank and confused look on their faces.
In order to handle this sudden return of the vast number of people the authorities have taken control of most community Centers and warehouses in order to house the newly emerged population. The line of reasoning is based on identification of the returnees and to study them in more detail. In the order families discover their once lost family members the returnees can return to their old homes. However, many remain for a prolonged time in these temporary community shelters due to many various personal reasons. Nonetheless, it is evident that the people who have come back from the dead will cause additional problems to the living in several different ways.
Campillo's zombie film turns into a philosophical tale that illustrates the tangible question of what if people came back from the dead and populated earth. A wide range of notions are addressed throughout the film such as over-population, unemployment, governmental expenses, and much more. In the backdrop of political issues, the story reveals how it influences macrosociety. To further Campillo's visual manifestation of politics it could suggest an intangible concept that the human race might not be far from these issues when observing the world and its unyielding population increase.
The film also goes into great depth of how the return of deceased family member would influence the family and the individual. This view of a microsociety is delivered through three different marriages where the couples are of various ages. One family deals with the return of their dead son while the other two deal with the return of a spouse either male and female. Under close scrutiny the emotional impact seems to be emphasized on the family level. Here the viewer can experience the psychological aftermath of enduring bereavement to have these old psychological scars once again torn up. The psychological stress is not to be underestimated in a situation such as They Came Back offers, which displays an extensive array of emotional characteristics.
A vast sense of stress and anxiety rests within the film, but it never tips over when it feels overwhelming. The cast performs terrifically where they deliver genuine emotions such as confusion and a subtle apprehensive tension. The camerawork and lighting bind together the cast performances into a thick fabric where both the society and the family unit merge in an unsympathetic atmosphere where facts rule. Amidst this seemingly strong society the individual's are adrift in a disorientated emotional state while blindly reaching out for anything that could help them. All of the complexities within They Came Back offer a unique cinematic experience that encourages much philosophical contemplative work. Unfortunately, at times the film feels a little too cerebral which causes some scenes to suffer from mental congestion.

This bizarre film relates the story of two sleazy guys and three really stupid gals who run afoul of some sort of demonic swamp rapist creature. Unfortunately, even at only seventy minutes or so, it seems to take forever to really do anything. The majority of the film is filled with vast amounts of soft core porn. I am uncertain as to the directors intent with these sequences as they are not erotic and seem to do little other than pad out the running time. I suppose there is some message concerning a societies preoccupation with "things of the flesh" but I don't really know. Luckily, the demonic swamp rapist creature finally shows up to start raping and killing. The gore effects are marginal, one scene with a spear impalement is very poor, another with entrails being removed is a little better. None of the characters seem real, the two males are such jerks that only the most vapid of women would ever be around them. That said, the three women are so stupid that you end up with no character to identify with on any level. The film does not try to be scary it is essentially soft core porn in the beginning and then attempted horrific violence at the end. I ended up giving this film two stars based on its supposed historic value and an amazingly insightful interview with the director. After watching the interview, one can easily see why his characters behave so stupidly as he comes across as a complete moron. View at your own risk.

Based on a best-selling manga by Shungiku Uchida, this slice of dementia was fabricated for the hardcore audience of 'Tokyo Gore Police', 'Meatball Machine', 'Machine Girl' and 'Robogeisha', and ups the ante considerably when it comes to off-the-chain, over-the-top insanity, audacity and mind-melting hyper-violence.
A non-stop, balls-to-the-wall send-up of all the classic Universal horror flicks, we've got an adorable schoolgirl Vampire chick, a goth-girl gang whose leader becomes the Frankenstein girl after a fatal accident at the hands of the vamp chick, a hunchback dwarf who incinerates corpses left by the vamp, a school principal who's also the resident mad scientist / Dr. Frankenstein with a lab in the school basement, aided by an over-sexed faculty nurse who later becomes an undead killing machine at the hands of the good doctor. Have I got your attention yet?
And we're just scratching the surface of this psychotically-psychedelic celluloid centerpiece of all things absurd, offensive and voraciously violent. Imaginative beyond your wildest dreams, unapologetic in it's insensitive use of stereotypes (there's a group of girls who wear afros, facepaint, big lips, put plates in their lips and gangsta rap, ghetto dance and spew Ebonics about Michael Jackson, Barack Obama, Joyce Joyner and Michael Jordan - remember, these are Asian girls!), this flick has more WTF moments than anything I've ever seen, and that's saying a lot.
Then there's a parody of disturbingly real-life adolescent behavior in Japan, the wrist-cutting kids (who do this out of boredom, rebellion and status-seeking), and here we have a school sanctioned, annual wrist-cutting championship contest that the kids practice for after classes. Needless to say, the arterial blood-spray quotient has never been higher in one of these movies, and I thought that crown went to 'Machine Girl' when I saw it for the first time. Guess again. Noah's Ark couldn't withstand this sanguinary storm.
As the film progresses, the violence gets more vehement, the gore more grandiose, the larger-than-life lunacy now nearing apocalyptic proportions - there are no words that can adequately prepare your senses for this onslaught. It just keeps on building steam until the frenzied finale and a tip-of-the-hat parody of 'Let The Right One In' along with so much more. The only thing missing was nudity, but now I'm just being gluttonous...
For a low-budget film, the special effects work most of the time (even when not so special), and you can't analyze or over-think what's happening on-screen without ruining it for yourself - this is a roller-coaster ride, one of the largest you've ever been on. If you thought about this, you'd probably never get on one, and if you've never ridden one, you won't enjoy this flick. You need to turn your mind off for a spell and get sucked into the bizarre madness on display. It's not for everybody, hell, it's not meant for most folks. But if you've seen the movies referenced above, you're already in the choir and need to check this one out immediately. (By the way, it's much better than 'Robogeisha', which I found to be a let down...).
