Tom and Lola Review

Tom and Lola

This film is about the beguiling spirit and bond between two children isolated since birth from the world and cared for by distant hospital staff. Objects of endless medical probes, the children watch TV and dream of a distant world. Once they've breach their isolation, they outsmart their caretakers in a race against time. As miniature fugitives, they elude their captors to explore a world where discoveries are found in every corner until they're betrayed.
It's a charming film that has a happy ending. Even though there are nude children in the movie, I highly recommend this movie for family viewing.

The Russell Girl - Hallmark Hall of Fame Review

The Russell Girl - Hallmark Hall of Fame
Average Reviews:

This touching film about wounds left untended and the anguish caused by their neglect is a quietly touching drama. Amber Tamblyn gives an underplayed and very real performance as Sarah Russell. She seems numb upon hearing crushing news from a doctor. Returning home where she's loved would seem a natural move under the circumstances. But a tragedy more painful than the imperfections in her blood hang over her return.
Elizabeth Mastrantonio is Sarah's mother, who thinks Sarah is just there for a visit to share good news about college. Her head-in-the-sand optimism prompts Sarah's silence on both fronts. Her mother is so deeply troubled herself, unwilling to confront the past tragedy, that she cannot see or hear the anguish in Sarah's actions or words, and is blind to just how much her daughter is hurting.
Amber Tamblyn is marvelous in this Hallmark film in conveying the unspoken torment she lives with each day. Sarah tries to doctor those wounds with an attempt to connect with the woman who lives across the street. It is she who refers to Sarah as, "the Russell girl." Jennifer Ehle is quite marvelous as the other mother who has never truly dealt with what happened.
While rekindling a high school romance, Sarah makes slow progress and finds that repairs to her car and a wooden box are much simpler than fixing a damaged heart. An excellent script and touching performances with the ring of truth make this film deeply moving, rather than maudlin. It also offers hope that wounds finally brought out into the open and talked about have a chance at healing. A fine drama for the entire family.

Plain Truth (2004) Review

Plain Truth (2004)
Average Reviews:

I happened to come across this movie completely by accident one night while channel-surfing. I have to say that I tend to avoid the Lifetime channel as a rule, but this particular night I came across the beginning of this movie and it looked interesting. So I gave it a chance. Wow, what a surprise! This turned out to be quite an enjoyable movie with tons more depth and intrigue than a typical Lifetime made-for-television movie will offer. In fact I would even rate it among the top movies I've seen recently.
Alison Pill plays a young Amish girl who is arrested on suspicion of killing her newborn child. Normally, the "girl gets arrested for killing her baby" wouldn't make for a very worthwhile movie plot since this topic is nothing new, but having an Amish girl be in the center of it all adds an unusual twist to the movie, one of the things it has going for it. And Alison Pill nails this role; I'm shocked that she has not been in more well-known movies. Her acting talent is obvious from the beginning, not to mention being quite attractive. Equally as good is Mariska Hargitay as the lawyer who represents her in court. And she isn't too hard on the eyes either. I don't mean to harp on about the attractiveness of the 2 women in the lead roles, but hey, it certainly doesn't hurt to have that as a bonus.
But getting back to the merits of the movie, don't let the word "Lifetime" discourage you. Believe me, I've done my fair share of cringing from the painfully-bad movies that Lifetime tends to show. But I can assure you that "Plain Truth" is a welcome change, with some great plot twists (you won't see the final one coming a mile away). Highly recommended!

The Little House on the Prairie (2005) Review

The Little House on the Prairie (2005)

When I found out that (I think it was ABC) they're making a Little House on the Prairie movie, I was thrilled. When I found out that they're going to follow the books exactly, I was even more thrilled. As the most of us, I grew up with the series with Michael Landon and I still consider this to be the best family series in television history. The 5-part mini-series was excellent and I consider this to be highly reccomended.
I really hope that ABC continues making more of these movies by continuing on faithfully by the books as Laura gets older and her meeting Almanzo. I'm such a sucker for romance. :) This is reccomended for all ages and it's completely family-safe. :)

Doing Time on Maple Drive (1992) Review

Doing Time on Maple Drive (1992)
Average Reviews:

Fox DVD will undoubtedly showcase Jim Carrey for his supporting performance in "Doing Time on Maple Drive," a stellar cable TV movie from 1992, but buyer beware: his is a straight, supporting dramatic performance. He is very good, but the real shining star of this small Ken Olin-directed gem is the talented William McNamara, who is unforgettable as the "good" son in a seemingly perfect, but actually dysfunctional, family led by James B. Sikking and Bebe Besch. "Chicago Hope"'s Jayne Brook rounds out the cast as a daughter who evidently married beneath her status and joins alcoholic older brother Carrey as the profound disappointments in a family who has laid all its future hopes and dreams on its children. Apparently, it's up to youngest son McNamara to rise above the rubble his siblings have made of their lives and carry on the family's grand promise. Unfortunately, he has a secret that will come crashing down on everyone involved.
When the story opens, McNamara is bringing fiance Lori Loughlin home to meet the family. And it's a joyous homecoming, but it's clear something is wrong with the relationship. Then the unthinkable happens and Loughlin discovers McNamara's secret: he is gay and has left a long-term boyfriend to marry her simply to please his parents, who supposedly don't know the truth. Then she leaves and he is left to explain to his family why his bride has abandoned him and why he may very well be their biggest disappointment of all.
The great thing about "Doing Time on Maple Drive" is how honest it is, and how refreshingly free of melodrama the writers and director Olin have made it. McNamara's secret is revealed slowly, and when the family finally finds out about it, their reactions are honest and true. That the mother takes it hardest of all is a refreshing twist, and Sikking's father has a final heart-to-heart with his son which is beautiful, yet heartbreaking, to behold. What is refreshing is that the film isn't about homosexuality as much as it is about family dynamics and how important it is for parents not to base too much of their hopes and dreams on their children. The ironic thing is that McNamara will undoubtedly be a success in life, and should be a source of undying pride for his parents, but because of his sexuality he will always be the family's embarassing secret.
The performances in "Doing Time on Maple Drive" are universally excellent, with McNamara and Sikking the standouts. Besch is also pitch-perfect as a mother who is loving on the outside, but as cold-hearted and unforgiving on the inside as was Mary Tyler Moore in "Ordinary People." Brook and Loughlin offer solid support, but Carrey is a revelation, especially those who missed his stellar dramatic work in "Man on the Moon" and "Eternal Sunshine." Made just before "Ace Ventura" made him a comedic superstar, his alcoholic son is tender and achingly true. And director Ken Olin handles everything with appropriate restraint and a total lack of exploitation.
"Doing Time on Maple Drive" is a terrific TV movie and a welcome edition to DVD. Don't let the subject matter scare you off. It is respectfully and tastefully handled, and for once serves a more universal truth than simply preaching to the choir about homosexual rights. After one viewing, you may ask yourself the same question I have for years: Why is William McNamara not a major star? You may be as baffled as me. *****
