I purchased this set as a Christmas gift for my 29 year old daughter. She was beyond thrilled. She has already started watching this series. She could not believe that I would think to purchase this and the whole series, too. The service on receiving this order was great and the condition the dvd's arrived in was fantastic. I would order from this vendor again.

Sassy Girl Chun-Hyang Korean Drama (2005) Review

Sassy Girl Chun-Hyang Korean Drama (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was one of the top 10 Korean Drama of 2005, constantly in number 1 spot and rightfully so.
But if you don't like mushy stuff this series isn't for you.. At times it is a bit excessively corny. However the story line is unique and worth watching.. With good acting by Jae Hee and Chae-yeong and almost everyone else.
The editorial review / product description is about 5% right.. The series was made by KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) not PBS. It is the modern day version of the Legend of Chun-Hyang. In this series Seong Chun Hyang (Han Chae Young) is a daughter of a poor cabaret singer. She is pretty, independent and the smartest girl in school. Lee Mong-ryong (Jae Hee) is the bratty son of the police chief, who's always in trouble. The two high school kids are forced into an arranged marriage due to a drunken night incident, where they slept in a same room, which led to a huge rumor and an uncomfortable situation. This is where the story begins.
I'm not going to get into the details and ruin the spoiler. But watch it you might like it. It's the ultimate chick flick with lots of twists and turns and tragedy and finally a happy ending. I absolutely loved the hilarious previous life and other korean drama parodies the series pulled. Like the legend, there's rich and powerful Byun Hak-do who falls in love with Chun-Hyang and manipulates Chun-Hyang to break up with Mong-Ryong. There's also Chae-rin who is Mong-Ryong's first crush who wants the couple to break up.
Another name of the series is.. Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang (or Chun-Hyang).. I wish Amazon could post trailers of the videos.. You can find the trailer on you tube I guess..

Steel (1979) Review

Steel (1979)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I attended the premiere of Steel in my hometome, Lexington, Ky., the city where it was filmed. My late husband, an ironworker, and I, both worked for the company that performed the steel erection for Kincaid Tower, the building used as the centerpiece for this quite interesting film and the firm listed in the credits. We knew many of the 'real' ironworkers who worked as uncredited extras on the film.
The premiere was held at a vintage Lexington theater and was attended by several of the stars including Lee Majors (Mike Catton) and Terry Kiser (Valentino). A reception held at Kincaid Tower was also attended by many of the stars. Phyllis George Brown, first-lady in Kentucky at the time and former Miss Texas and Miss America, was hostess and mistress of ceremonies for the film's opening.
Lee Majors, whose hometown was Middlesboro, KY, played football for and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University 26 miles from Lexington, in effect 'came home' to make this film. Several of my friends attended college with Lee, but I had never met him. I recall being very surprised to learn the 'baby' of the TV hit Big Valley and the amazing 'Million Dollar Man' was painfully uncomfortable and shy in public when he attended the premiere.
Stuntman A.J. Bakunas' (who also had a bit part in the film) 300' leap from the top of the building ended in his tragic death. The stunt received live radio coverage. Listening to the broadcast it was obvious before the actual announcement, based on the lack of definite immediate confirmation of his successful record winning stunt, that the outcome was dire for Bakunas (stunt double for Burt Reynolds in TV's Hooper). The fall in the film as double for George Kennedy, has been previously completed from the 9th floor. The jump from the top of the building was an attempt to regain a high fall record after he learned that Dar Robinson had broken his record high fall for a non-movie related publicity stunt. Bakunas, whose father was in attendance for what would be his final stunt, performed the fall expertly, but the airbag split on impact. The film was dedicated to Bakunas.
I own 'Steel' on VHS and have just recently viewed once again. For me, of course, the backdrop of my hometown is always interesting to see from the vantage point of the pinnacle of one of the tallest buildings in our city. Additionally, I always enjoy seeing so many individuals I knew at that time making their celluloid debut particularly because so many of them are no longer with us. These personal links to the film are not necessary though to enjoy the movie.
'Steel', while certainly not Oscar material or destined to be a classic, is instead a solid film with an impressive cast that pays homage to an art (hanging steel) and to the truly unique individuals who make that art their profession. The writer did a fine job of presenting the personality traits and characteristics of so many of the fine men who daily walked the steel girders high above the rest of the world and the actors carried off their roles in a very believable fashion. These men faced what so many of us fear and most had 'bigger than life', strong personas that made them an interesting breed to know and love. It is the spirited characterizations along with the dazzling views from high atop the steel girders that infuses 'Steel' with the flavor that makes it something other than a run-of-the mill film.
Lee Majors did what I think was his best acting work in 'Steel' Whether it was being back in his home state or settling back in with the blue collar citizenry of his childhood, he filled the steel-toed boots of an ironworker to a T. Terry Kiser, an interesting versatile actor, was perfectly cast for the part of the lover in the crew and this was one of his best films. Art Carney was truly enjoyable and George Kennedy, who had an important role but limited screen time, made his mark on the film.
This film seems to be becoming scarce, having never made it to DVD. Now that so many movie rental stores don't stock videos any longer, these old gems are becoming more difficult to catch-up on. I would recommend 'Steel' to anyone with even a passing interest in building construction, working at heights, or mostly of course seeing an enjoyable movie with a believable plot populated by unique people one would enjoy getting to know.

Flintstones (1994) Review

Flintstones (1994)
Average Reviews:

I have loved this movie since it first came to the theatre. I must have seen it at least twelve times in the theatres. After I watched the movie at the theatre I simply had to have the soundtrack. At the time I only bought cassettes, so I got the Flintstones cassette. Just yesterday, I bought the Flintstones soundtrack on CD. When the movie came out on VHS I bought it. I plan on buynig the DVD.
Rick Moranis is one of my all time favorite actors. He was a fantastic at playing Barney Rubble. Barney was always my favorite character.
A few years ago, when I went to Orlando, Florida I got to see the actual Flintstones car, and some of the other props from the film. Naturally, I had to have pictures taken of them.
If you haven't seen this film I suggest going to your local Blockbuster and renting it. You won't be disapointed.

Reckless + Wild Review

Reckless + Wild
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title and the poster for this movie make it look like a teenage boy's dream come true. Actually, it's more of a movie for the ladies.
Christine Taylor plays Lili, from San Francisco, who comes to Los Angeles to visit her friend Frances, played by Paget Brewster. In case you are wondering who these two are, Taylor was also in Zoolander and Brewster was in Now You Know. Taylor is the more naive and straight-laced of the two; Brewster plays a Hollywood wanna-be starlet who hasn't advanced beyond extras on a film set. The occasion for their reunion is a wedding party, but Brewster (Frances) is so hapless that she has lost the address of the party. The movie follows them through an evening as they careen from party to party. Lili's real motivation for coming to L.A. is to meet a man that she encountered abroad, and thinks she is in love with. This movie is a comedy, though it's a little short on laughs. It seems to have sunk straight to DVD with hardly a trace, probably because it didn't define a target audience very well. It does manage to deliver some biting satire on the L.A./Hollywood "sophisticated" scene, but you probably have to be an insider to really appreciate it.
It's rated R, but it's a very mild R, probably due to language and references to drug use that went a little too far for PG-13. Don't watch this movie expecting nudity or violence.
Claudia Schiffer plays a singer/actress who keeps cropping up throughout the movie. Though her scenes are short, she manages to completely steal them from Taylor and Brewster. She has a much better presence in front of the camera, and it's not just about her looks.
The opening song, performed on-stage in a nightclub, was a great start to this film. I never heard it before, but it is a great start for a soundtrack.
The movie ends on an upbeat note--though it's a bit hard to say just when it ends, as you keep seeing additional short scenes as the final credits roll.
By the way, Claudia Schiffer was also in Zoolander.
The "bonus" features on this DVD are so skimpy, one has to wonder why they even bothered. I guess it's almost a prerequisite to putting out a DVD to say that it has "bonus features" nowadays.
If you are a fan of one of these 3 actresses, you would probably like the movie. Or if you want to watch a fairly harmless So. Cal romantic comedy, you might give it a try. Just don't expect a movie with a lot of skin, because that's not what it is about.
Karl Weaver

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie / Turbo - A Power Rangers Movie (1995) Review

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie / Turbo - A Power Rangers Movie (1995)
Average Reviews:

Wow! The Power Rangers on DVD! Never before have the Power Rangers looked so good! I don't even know where to begin, but here goes! First, the contents of this dvd. Both Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie and Turbo A Power Rangers Movie are here. This disc is a dual-layer disc, with one movie per side. Each movie is in widescreen format (YEAH!), and each movie is accompanied by the theatrical trailer and featurette. It's not loaded with extras, but since you're getting two awesome movies on one disc for a fair price, it's hard to complain. As for the films, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie is the first theatrical production of the Power Rangers series. The Rangers in this movie are Tommy, Kimberly, Adam, Billy, Aisha and Rocky. MMPR The Movie is good fun, with cool action sequences and neat costumes. The only draw back to this film is that it strays from its Sentai roots by giving the Rangers vinyl outfits and replacing their Mega Zord with a poorly designed computer graphic one. Besides those minor discrepancies though, this movie is great for Power Rangers fans. Next, Turbo Power Rangers, is my personal favorite of the two. The Rangers in this film are Tommy, Kat, Adam, Tanya, and Justin (who replaces Rocky). However, the highlight of this movie is the return of the ORIGINAL POWER RANGERS, Jason and Kimberly, although they don't suit up as Rangers. Thankfully, this movie does not stray far from its Sentai roots, as the Rangers faithfully maintain the costumes and Zords of their Japanese counter-parts, and all other elements you've come to expect from a Power Rangers spectacle are there. All in all, this dvd is great bang for your buck and awesome entertainment for those who enjoy light-fare, Sentai, sci-fi action. I highly recommend it for the kid in the family or the kid in you. It'll surely put a smile on your face : )

The Liberace Show (2004) Review

The Liberace Show (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Liberace Show" features about 15 selections from the early Liberace TV shows of the 50s. It's a somewhat different collection in that the majority are vocals, which Liberace phased out in his later performances. They are vintage Liberace, though--full of his special brand of corn mixed with music. There's also his guest appearance on the Jack Benny (TV)Show, where they perform together. Although he's in black & white, with only two rings, this is a worthy addition to any collection. Hopefully, it might inspire Warner Bros. to release "Sincerely Yours" on DVD, and also his "Live" appearance with the London Philharmonic & TV specials which are available on VHS (3 tape set).

We Were the Mulvaneys (2002) Review

We Were the Mulvaneys (2002)
Average Reviews:

This 2002 TV movie is based on a Joyce Carol Oates novel that won some accolades a few years ago. I usually like Joyce Carol Oates and tried to read the book. But I was bored and just couldn't get into it. I always did wonder, however, how the story turned out. And so I was glad to see it was on DVD.

Starring Blythe Danner as the mother and Beau Bridges as the father, we first meet the Mulvaneys as a happy family with four teenage children. It's storybook happiness, the kind that doesn't happen in real life and now I know why I was bored with the book. And then, when something bad happens, it tears the family apart. In a matter of weeks, all the happiness goes down the drain and each family member suffers in his or her own way. The audience suffers too as this part goes on and on and on with one misfortune leading to another until several years pass and the father is dying. By now, everyone is miserable. But this seems to lead the family to reconciliation and a new beginning.

The film is pure soap opera and rather depressing. However, it moved quickly and I got involved in the story, wanting to see how it would all turn out. Later, I wondered what it was that held my interest and I think it was the way it was paced and the excellent acting although it doesn't even make the playing field of good film drama.

Wolverine and the X-Men: Final Crisis Trilogy

A must-have item for those who, like me, started buying the individual volumes instead of patiently waiting months for the release of the complete season. These 3 episodes, "Foresight, Parts 1-3," wrap up each of the storylines that unfolded during Season 1 of the series. The X-Men - present and future - find themselves fighting on all fronts. The Hellfire Club's Inner Circle has to be stopped; using Emma Frost, they have plans for the Phoenix force that don't include Jean Grey. Magneto has to be stopped; he's bound & determined to start the war between humans & mutants and is attacking New York City from the back of Senator Kelly's own Sentinels. There's Master Mold, which has used an upgraded Cerebro & Xavier's mind to locate - and begin to exterminate - every mutant on earth. And, as you'd expect given the series' title, Wolverine finds himself in the middle of everything.

The Little Polar Bear - Lars and the Little Tiger Review

The Little Polar Bear - Lars and the Little Tiger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me admit that I'm a childless adult. A child or the parent of one may be more enthusiastic than me.
In the same way that "Shrek" (at least the first installment) had the message of not judging a book by its cover, this work has several stories in which characters are kind to strangers in need. The work could have been broken up into three minisodes: Lars visits the city, Lars takes a tiger home, Lars and father visit Color Island.
I find that children's cartoons on DVD usually lack the foreign language and subtitle options that DVDs for older audiences have. This DVD had many language and subtitle options. (The original cartoon is German.) I watched in Spanish with English subtitles. Sometimes adult Spanish speakers talk far too quickly for me to understand (not like they are wrong for not slowing down); but this kiddy dialogue was slow and simple enough for a dude that just took one year of Spanish to understand it. For teens and tweens older than this DVD's target audience, listening to the foreign languages or reading the subtitles may make the work more valuable.
This work really doesn't have villains. It's just 90 minutes of friends helping friends. Issues are resolved quickly: lost characters are found within minutes, tensions are resolved in a snap.
When seeieng the tiger on the cover, I assumed that Lars would travel to India. However, this was a snow tiger in Russia. In the first Lars movie, having a WHITE bear and a BLACK seal become friends screamed that this borrowed from "The Fox and the Hound" and was similarly a metaphor for interracial friendships. That same message is here, but more subtly.
In the first Lars film, Lars was deep underwater, yet his mouth was opening and closing as if he were taking in air. This cartoon at least recognized animals' limitation. The seal had a hard time moving across a stone fence. The tigers feared water. The arctic was too cold for a butterfly.
Some adults disliked that "The Land Before Time" showed adult and child dinosaurs interacting with each other when modern reptiles lay their eggs and move on. Here, the polar bear and tiger cubs were mostly cared for by their fathers. In the real wilderness, I'm almost sure they would never have even seen their fathers. Perhaps the downplaying of mothers meant this work was targeted to boys.
If you liked Winnie the Pooh with that Heffalump or loved the moral messages at the end of He-Man or She-Ra, then you should appreciate this DVD.

Crash: Season 1 (2010) Review

Crash: Season 1 (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a difficult series to review. I would say that it is less than the sum of its parts.
There are several storylines that are extremely entertaining:
(1) the has-been rock and roll producer who wants to find one final "star act" before his career (and life) goes down in flames;
(2) the woman who suspects that her estranged father was always right about her husband's career prospects;
(3) another woman who suspects that her lover may be a mob enforcer/ contract killer;
(4) an illegal alien who is attempting to make it in America -- crossing the border with only the bloody shirt on his back.
However, I thought that each of these stories would have been better told as four distinctive full length movies than as they are presented here as a (very loosely) interwoven story.
The acting in the series is strong as is the writing in the majority of the episodes. But, in the 2nd Season, I would like a rationale as to why I should view this series as one complete narrative as opposed to a collection of fascinating short stories.

I love invasion films...saw most and this one rates pretty good.
The story is solid and the acting pretty good, but like any TV science fiction...there seem to be missing a few millions dollars on
their production. Instead of a large scale movie we end up with a small scale movie that has not enough people in it...too much of
some actors/actresses and that sleepy moog synthesizer music for all
the mushy scenes(too many...we dont care).
I still bought the movie as there is not enough good alien invasion
movies out there and this is is worth a visit.

Murder One - The Complete First Season (1995) Review

Murder One - The Complete First Season (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
TV Guide hailed Murder One as 'The Best Show You're Not Watching' mid first-season, and, believe me, they were right.
The premise of Murder One is simple enough; to take you, step by step, through a sensational murder trial. A series of twists and turns within the first four episodes leads to the arrest of drug-addicted movie star Neil Avadon who turns to his former lawyer Ted Hoffman for help.
The show takes you through the entire trial, from jury selection to the verdict and beyond. Each episode reveals more about the case itself, about the young victim Jessica Costello, and the tragic life she led up until her murder. The defendent, Neil, has no memory of the night she died and doesn't even know himself if he's innocent or guilty.
Ted Hoffman and Associates, the law firm at the center of the trial, is staffed with brilliant attorneys who passionately fight for Neil and their other clients with an exuberance and passion seldom seen in present-day law shows. They actually *care*, and through them you will, too. I'd love to tell you more, to detail the fascinating and brilliant plot twists and revelations that you'll journey through watching this show, but to do so would spoil the incredible experience of seeing it yourself, from episode one to the end.
This show first aired when I was eleven years old. Ten years later I still vividly remember it as one of the best, most well-written and riveting dramas I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.
