(More customer reviews)Lesley-Anne Down (North and South) was my reason for watching this movie. I had hoped she would be slinky and sexy in this, but all that stuff was left to the younger Teresa Hill. I'm not complaining about Teresa's assets, it's just that the mature Ms. Down could have sent the temperature soaring if she'd been more willing.
This is a movie you feel you've seen before, because the plot is the re-hashed formula of so many B-movie erotic thrillers. One that comes to mind is Inner Sanctum, starring Tanya Roberts. It's almost a carbon copy of that movie. Nonetheless, it delivers the goods you expect from a B-movie: wooden acting, an attempt to be noir with twist upon twist, and a splash of sex and nudity.
Ms. Down is the disabled wife of the forgettable male lead, and he and his nubile young mistress (Teresa Hill) scheme to get rid of her for the insurance. But not all goes according to plan...

Phoenix (2006) Review

Akers as a director and writer (here sharing the credits with Sandon Berg) and as with his other two features 'Matrimonium' and 'Gone, But Not Forgotten' there is a sense that Akers knows how to tell a good story, a story based on universal themes but just happening to be using gay characters to explain a similarity in all manners of love whether they be straight or gay.
LVN Dylan (Chad Bartley) is celebrating his 23rd birthday by setting his apartment with flowers and dinner, expecting his love of one year to arrive for the surprise. The love is Ken (Gaetano Jones) who arrives late and barely notices the setting, giving Dylan a clay vase as a gift and then telling him he must dash off to Phoenix for a failing real estate deal. Dylan is hurt then angry and breaks his gift, sending Ken off to Phoenix in a miff. Sorry for his behavior Dylan takes the money enclosed in a Birthday card from his folks and flies to Phoenix to apologize to Ken. But surprises arise in Phoenix: Ken is missing, Dylan traces the broken vase to discover chef/ceramist Demetrius (Jeff Castle) and learns that Ken and Demetrius have been partnered for seven years! Neither Dylan nor Demetrius is pleased with Ken's lying and cheating but they gradually admit to finding solace with each other and spend time together, including a physical encounter that leads to others as the two prolong Dylan's stay. How the love triangle is broken but remains influential is the resolution of the story.
Akers has the sensitivity to not make the story have the happy-wappy Hollywood ending: he also has the talent to capture love encounters in a very sensual way. The actors are all attractive men and given the lack of prior experience each has had, they offer fairly strong performances - especially Chad Bartley. The film is desperately in need of editing as there are extraneous scenes galore (the landscape scenes are far to brightly sun drenched for the desert locales captured. But in the end the film is successful in that it does present the joys, trials, and disappointments in love relationships in the gay community that could have easily been in a straight character movie - and that is refreshing! Being alone and dealing with an oncoming divorce she meets Bill (John Ritter) who is there for her to help through this horrible time. Bill falls in love with her but Adrain still hopes that her husband will return when she gave birth to their child. If he does and what will happen to Bill I won't tell here. Watch for yourself and enjoy "Heartbeat". And by the way, you'll LOVE the cast !

Deceived (1991) Review

(More customer reviews)While some might call the plot twists of this 1991 thriller improbable, for me the tension and build to the film created a momentum that carried us to the incredibly scary climax. Doing less than 30 million in box office, this was not a big hit; but it is a film that holds up remarkably well 12 years after release. Goldie Hawn does an excellent job as Adrienne Saunders, a woman who seems to have it all with a beautiful child and happy marriage. Her husband Jack seems like the All-American father. Then when a colleague of her husband's gets murdered, clue upon clue seems to fly up in her face until Adrienne has to confront her husband. Then he mysteriously dies in a car accident. Director Damian Harris who seems to thrive on thrillers such as last year's "Mercy," does an amazing job of having event build upon event. The supporting cast of characters do a great job from Jack Saunders' sister to Paul Sullivan's mother. While this may not be a perfect film, it is a thriller that packs a wallop. Goldie Hawn delivers an understated and believable performance as the terrorized and deceived wife. This is a film worth discovering or revisiting a little over a decade after its release. Enjoy!
