Playing for Time (1980) Review

THIS IS A STUNNING MADE-FOR-TV MOVIE. IT COULD NOT BE MORE DIFFERENT THAN SCHINDLER'S LIST, AND I FOUND IT MUCH MORE INVOLVING AND CONFRONTING. VANESSA REDGRAVE IS ABSOLUTELY RIVETING IN THE ROLE OF FANIA FENELONG, WHO BECOMES PART OF A BIZARRE ORCHESTRA AT AUSCHWITZ, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER WOMEN. THIS ORCHESTRA IS OF COURSE AT THE MERCY OF THEIR CAPTORS, AND THEY ARE EXPECTED TO PLAY LIKE VIRTUOSOS (LUCKILY, MOST OF THEM ARE), DESPITING THE FACT THAT THAY ARE OFTEN HUNGRY AND SICK. THE WHOLE CAST IS AMAZING AND THERE ARE SEVERAL MOVING AND VERY HUMAN SCENES INVOLVING A FEW OF THE GERMAN CAPTOR'S, ESPECIALLY ONE WOMAN IN PARTICULAR. AS TIME GOES ON, DIVISIONS OCCUR BETWEEN THE (MOSTLY) JEWISH WOMEN MAKING UP THE ORCHESTRA, AND FANIA BECOMES EVERYONE'S MENTOR. (EVEN THOUGH SHE DOESN'T MEAN TO). THE WHOLE FILM IS DARKLY REALISTIC, COMPLETE WITH MOUTH-SORES, SHAVED HEADS, GRIMY FACES AND SUNKEN-LOOKING EYES. A HAUNTING, RIVETING YET (SOMEHOW) UPLIFTING FILM, IT IS STUNNINGLY SHOT, AND SEEMED SO REAL THAT I COULD ALMOST SMELL IT.

Windy City (1984) Review

I too saw this movie several years ago and it still ranks among my favorites. I would describe it as being about childhood friends who have grown apart over the years. And although their neighborhood loyalties cause them to stay in contact with each other, they struggle to stay "friends" in a contemporary way. Yet, despite their adult diversities, a tragedy brings them together in a beautiful and meaningful way. The movie shows me that although old friends follow their own life paths, the friendships are real and can be counted on regardless of seperation.

Heart Beat (1980) Review

Heart Beat (1980)

I won't even pretend to be an expert on the Beat movement. I read "On the Road" in college but it didn't leave a lasting imprataur on me. Ditto for Burroughs' "Naked Lunch" which I couldn't get through. I did read Tom Wolfe's account of the Merry Pranksters, "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" as well as Lenny Bruce's bio and enjoyed them thoroughly. I didn't approach "Heart Beat" with high expectations and they were more than transcended. Director John Byrum's film has it's own jazzy rhythms that make it unique and unto itself. We see Jack Kerouac(John Heard) and the Cassadys (Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek) not as leaders of a movement but rugged individualists who defy the norm and go to the beat of their own muses. The film is immeasurably helped by a powerhouse performance by Nolte as Neal Cassady, a real charmer who may be a ne'er-do-well or a rebel. Heard and Spacek are good in more subdued turns as the friend and spouse who at times are repelled then embrace Neal's antics. The late Ray Sharkey gives a great turn as an Allen Ginsburg type as does John Larroquette as a conservative TV host. Terrific period detail from art designer Jack Fisk, Spacek's real-life husband, and gorgeous score from Jack Nietzche. I remember this film received lukewarm critical and commercial success at the time of it's release but it is definitely a film ahead of it's time.

Flim Flam Man (1967) Review

Flim Flam Man (1967)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not too many people have heard of the 1967 film "The Flim Flam Man," and that's too bad for them. I have owned this lovely valentine of a movie for several years, and have always appreciated its comedic/dramatic allure. Everything clicks perfectly in this old fashioned film, from its authentic locations (this movie was filmed in small town Kentucky) to a wonderful musical score by Jerry Goldsmith.
I love George C. Scott's rip-snorting performance as a train-hopping con-man whose legend precedes him. He literally stumbles upon a military AWOL drifter in Michael Sarrazin, and the unlikely pair join forces to make a little cash. Camping in abandoned railroad cars, hiking cross country and stealing a car or two, this colorful pair eventually has the county police hot on their tails. Along the way, Sarrazin falls in love with the mayor's daughter, Slim Pickens loses his paycheck (great scene) and Scott samples a bit of the local moonshine.
"The Flim Flam Man" is aided by a cast of extraordinary character actors, including Harry Morgan, Jack Albertson, Strother Martin, Albert Salmi and Pickens. Morgan, as the local sheriff, is especially funny in a grand slapstick role. But director Irvin Kershner has done an excellent job in balancing comedy, drama and romance with skilled ease. It's the quieter moments in "The Flim Flam Man" that I truly admire, such as the scene when Scott reminisces about the purple-eyed girl he once loved in Missouri, or when Sarrazin discusses his dreams of the future with Sue Lyon.
This is such a charming movie, that each time I watch it I'm sad to see it end. "The Film Flam Man" transports us to a dreamy Southern land, colorful and optimistic, train whistles in the background, vibrant town squares, campfires beneath railroad bridges, bustling general stores. While this film was made in 1967, the small town ambiance of "The Flim Flam Man" harkens back to a time 30-40 years prior. It's a romantic recreation, in some ways a tender tribute to a past way of life. I always find the final image, of the abandoned bicycle resting at the railroad crossing, to be haunting, with Scott's character having disappeared to rustic parts unknown. I would love to join him on his journey.
For those anacquainted, "The Flim Flam Man" is a great discovery.

The Monster Squad (1987) Review

The Monster Squad (1987)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been waiting for this DVD to come into print for years, and now the wait is finally over. Thanks to Lionsgate for finally stepping up, straightening out the rights issues, and putting together a nice 2-Disc special edition of this classic 80s kids flick.
The Monster Squad, much like the Goonies and the Lost Boys, is a kid's flick at heart, but it doesn't come off as if it were written and directed down to children. The flick stars Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert (of Kids Incorporated fame), Brent Chalem, Michael Faustino and Robby Kiger as a group of kids that have a secret Monster club where they pontificate on all things monster related. Quick, two ways to kill a werewolf? Stumped? That's right, everyone knows you need to shoot `em with a silver bullet. Anyway, the group runs into trouble when unbeknown to them the all too real rouges gallery of the classic Universal monster movies are converging on their town looking to destroy an amulet that can prevent them from taking over the world. Sean, the leader of the club, lucks into a copy of Van Helsing's diary, which provides the instructions to a ritual that will banish the monsters into limbo. With the help of "Scary German Guy" (played by the always excellent Leonardo Cimino) a concentration camp survivor and resident German diary translator, the group bands together to save their families, their town, and quite possibly the entire world.
The film was directed by Fred Dekker and co-written by Fred Dekker and Shane Black (of Lethal Weapon and Predator fame) with amazing special effects and make-up by the legendary Stan Winston. This DVD was made possible by the director, actors, and fans who banded together in the past year through letter writing campaigns and revival screenings which proves just how much of a cult classic this flick is. If you are a generation X'er who's into action, horror or nostalgia the Monster Squad is sure to be a perfect addition to your DVD collection.
The 20th anniversary special edition set is reported to contain 2 audio commentary tracks, deleted scenes, an making of featurette, trailers, as well as a vintage interview with Tom Noonan (who played the Frankenstein's monster.)

Steel (1979) Review

Steel (1979)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I attended the premiere of Steel in my hometome, Lexington, Ky., the city where it was filmed. My late husband, an ironworker, and I, both worked for the company that performed the steel erection for Kincaid Tower, the building used as the centerpiece for this quite interesting film and the firm listed in the credits. We knew many of the 'real' ironworkers who worked as uncredited extras on the film.
The premiere was held at a vintage Lexington theater and was attended by several of the stars including Lee Majors (Mike Catton) and Terry Kiser (Valentino). A reception held at Kincaid Tower was also attended by many of the stars. Phyllis George Brown, first-lady in Kentucky at the time and former Miss Texas and Miss America, was hostess and mistress of ceremonies for the film's opening.
Lee Majors, whose hometown was Middlesboro, KY, played football for and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University 26 miles from Lexington, in effect 'came home' to make this film. Several of my friends attended college with Lee, but I had never met him. I recall being very surprised to learn the 'baby' of the TV hit Big Valley and the amazing 'Million Dollar Man' was painfully uncomfortable and shy in public when he attended the premiere.
Stuntman A.J. Bakunas' (who also had a bit part in the film) 300' leap from the top of the building ended in his tragic death. The stunt received live radio coverage. Listening to the broadcast it was obvious before the actual announcement, based on the lack of definite immediate confirmation of his successful record winning stunt, that the outcome was dire for Bakunas (stunt double for Burt Reynolds in TV's Hooper). The fall in the film as double for George Kennedy, has been previously completed from the 9th floor. The jump from the top of the building was an attempt to regain a high fall record after he learned that Dar Robinson had broken his record high fall for a non-movie related publicity stunt. Bakunas, whose father was in attendance for what would be his final stunt, performed the fall expertly, but the airbag split on impact. The film was dedicated to Bakunas.
I own 'Steel' on VHS and have just recently viewed once again. For me, of course, the backdrop of my hometown is always interesting to see from the vantage point of the pinnacle of one of the tallest buildings in our city. Additionally, I always enjoy seeing so many individuals I knew at that time making their celluloid debut particularly because so many of them are no longer with us. These personal links to the film are not necessary though to enjoy the movie.
'Steel', while certainly not Oscar material or destined to be a classic, is instead a solid film with an impressive cast that pays homage to an art (hanging steel) and to the truly unique individuals who make that art their profession. The writer did a fine job of presenting the personality traits and characteristics of so many of the fine men who daily walked the steel girders high above the rest of the world and the actors carried off their roles in a very believable fashion. These men faced what so many of us fear and most had 'bigger than life', strong personas that made them an interesting breed to know and love. It is the spirited characterizations along with the dazzling views from high atop the steel girders that infuses 'Steel' with the flavor that makes it something other than a run-of-the mill film.
Lee Majors did what I think was his best acting work in 'Steel' Whether it was being back in his home state or settling back in with the blue collar citizenry of his childhood, he filled the steel-toed boots of an ironworker to a T. Terry Kiser, an interesting versatile actor, was perfectly cast for the part of the lover in the crew and this was one of his best films. Art Carney was truly enjoyable and George Kennedy, who had an important role but limited screen time, made his mark on the film.
This film seems to be becoming scarce, having never made it to DVD. Now that so many movie rental stores don't stock videos any longer, these old gems are becoming more difficult to catch-up on. I would recommend 'Steel' to anyone with even a passing interest in building construction, working at heights, or mostly of course seeing an enjoyable movie with a believable plot populated by unique people one would enjoy getting to know.

'night, Mother (1986) Review

'night, Mother (1986)

...if your forty-something daughter told you that she was preparing to kill herself?
The entire movie revolves around a rather maudlin day in which Jesse, played by Sissy Spacek, informs her mother, portrayed by Anne Bancroft, that she plans to take her own life that very evening. No amount of pleading, commiserating, or lamenting on the part of her mother can dissuade this resolute woman from her grim task, which she delays long enough to spend the day and evening with her. The day progresses, and their discussions progress deeper and deeper into Jesse's past, though Jesse never does truly reveal just why she has decided to end her life.
Her mother alternates between resolve and horror, but never calls for help. And at the end, Jesse ignores her mother's frantic pleas, and succeeds.
As the credits scroll, one is left with a profound sense of loss, having watched and become familiar with Sissy's character in the course of the movie.

Take Down (1979) (1979) Review

Take Down (1979) (1979)

Probably the only thing Lorenzo Lamas has done that I was able to take seriously, Takedown is a solid portrayal of a lower working-class teen trying to balance attending high-school with the need to work in order to help support his family. Maureen McCormick plays a classmate who Lamas hopes to...er...'take down'(hee hee). No, actually it's a bittersweet movie about growing up among the have-nots, but finding that what you need was within yourself all along (or some Hallmark card-inspired nonsense like that). Might as well purchase it on VHS, since the likelihood of it ever getting updates to dvd is essentially nil.

More than just a movie, Double Crossed is a primer for those who wonder just how serious our government is on the war on drugs. The main players of this true story do not come to light untill 10 years later. Who was Attorney General for Dade County where Barry was first arrested and recruited into DEA? Who was Governor of Arkansas, the destination for the cocaine shipments? How much did they know, and how did they use that knowledge to further their carrers. Other players in this story include Ronald Reagan, Ollie North, and George Bush. Truly a story of strange bedfellows.

Mother Goose Rock N Rhyme (1990) Review

Mother Goose Rock N Rhyme (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first time I ever saw this movie was on the Disney channel when I was about 11 or 12 years old and ever since then I have been in love with it and all the endearing even sometimes annoying rhymeland characters. The story is basically simple Mother Goose played so delightfully by Jean Stapleton has suddenly disappeared from rhymeland and it is up to her uptight son played to perfection by Dan Gilroy and Little Bo Peep played Shelly Duvall who was made for the part to find her and bring her back before everyone in rhymeland disappears and mother gooses's rhymes become nothing but a mere illusion. It shows all the hilarious struggles and complications Bo Peep and Gordon have to go through to find her and all the crazy characters they meet on the way. The sets are bright, colorful, and very creative as are the costumes and makeup and while the special effects are not very realisitic and corny the great script and amazing humor make up for it. This movie just about has any star in the movie and music business you can think of including Woody Harrelson as the lamb from Mary had a little lamb, Little Richard as the party loving Old King Cole, Ben Vereen as Itsy Bitsy Spider, and the musical trio ZZ Top as The Three Men in the Tub which was pure genius putting them in that role. This movie is amazing and although it may seem corny and even childish at times it still proves to be funny, endearing and magical and I promise if you watch it, it will make you feel like a kid again.

THIS MOVIE IS THE FIRST TRUE BLAXPLOITATION FILM, LONG BEFORE THERE WAS A SWEETBACK, SHAFT, OR SUPERFLY. SIDNEY POITIER'S PERFORMANCE, AS ALWAYS, STANDS OUT. AT THE TIME THIS MOVIE WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED (1969), THE CRITICS AND THE PUBLIC CRITICIZED MR. POITIER FOR BEING THE PERFECT NEGRO IN HIS PREVIOUS FILMS (IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, GUESS WHO COMING TO DINNER, THE SLENDER THREAD, DUEL AT DIABLO,ETC). HOWEVER, IN THE LOST MAN, MR. POITIER PORTRAYS A 1960'S REVOLUTIONARY WHO MASTERMINDS A DARING ROBBERY THAT GOES WRONG AND PLACES HIM ON THE RUN FROM THE POLICE. A FINE SUPPORTING CAST WITH A EDGE OF THE SEAT, NAIL-BITING CLIMAX THAT WILL LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS.FOR A FILM THAT IS CLOSE TO 40 YEARS OLD, THE MOVIE STILL HOLDS UP VERY WELL AND IS ANOTHER PIECE OF THE POWERFUL BODY OF FILM WORK OF SIDNEY POITIER.

A New Leaf (1971) Review

A New Leaf (1971)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This comedy performance by Walter Matthou ranks with his best work, such as in The Odd Couple, Sunshine Boys etc. Unfortunately, not as many people have seen it, as this movie is a little-known gem.
I saw it as a second feature and almost missed it as I had never heard or read anything about it. We stayed, and laughed so hard I looked for it for years and told people about this odd film no one knows about.
Thank God cable aired it and it became available on VHS so I could recommend it to friends. The movie is simply hilarious.
Matthau is an arrogant, cultured, vain, selfish and rich snob suddenly finding himself penniless. His only salvation is to marry a rich woman and he finds the perfect target in the introverted and socially inept heiress/botanist played by Elaine May.
Matthau, dreading this intrusion into his perfectly ordered bachelor existence, decides murder of this ditz-of-all-time is the answer to all his problems. But, that is just the beginning to a very funny and ultimately touching story.
There are some of the best written and performed comedy bits in this film that I've ever seen. Starting with William Redfield as an accountant trying to explain to a willfully uncomprehending Matthau that he's broke; James Coco as Matthau's detested uncle extorting him over breakfast; Jack Weston as May's conniving and crooked lawyer/boyfriend; Matthau proposing to May while kneeling on broken glass; the wedding with May being given away by a blubbering Weston; the Honeymoon and the toga nightgown; May's disasterous household of thieving servants; and so on.
Special mention must go to George Rose who plays Matthau's valet and all-purpose manservant. He is superb in his dry, clipped delivery while conveying the man's undelying wisdom and empathy.
Okay, the ending may seem tacked on or otherwise not perfect but you can say that about The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and quite a few other classic comedies. I won't take so much as 1/2 star off for that. This is a Classic American comedy and should be seen by everyone. Don't miss it. And please, someone, preserve it forever by putting it on DVD!
