(More customer reviews)The top of the box for this DVD states that this is a cult classic."Cult classic". Maybe, we need to examine just what exactly a "cult classic" is. I always thought a cult classic was an underground movie that never was accepted by the mainstream but was reverred and celebrated by a select few. Cult classics are often too extreme or weird for the mainstream but are usually well made and have original and entertaining premises. But maybe I'm wrong because "Female Slaves Revenge" does not fit my critera for a cult classic. Its an extremely bad movie, its not entertaining, its poorly made, poorly acted and the plot is disjointed. Nobody likes this movie not even a guy who enjoys cult classics like myself. This movie belongs in another catagory called garbage. And thats exactly where I will put it, in the garbage.

(More customer reviews)This is a soft-core porno about three girls who are refugees from a war. Soldiers are hunting them, and they find a house out in the woods. The woman who owns the house offers them shelter and safety, in exchange they have to help with the chores and be her sexual partner. The vast majority of the action is girl on girl; you get lots of fondling, soft-core sex, bathing and an oil massage. There are also three other girls who are in the beginning and end of the movie. All of them have really nice bodies. Of course the dialogue and acting are atrocious, but I don't imagine too many people care.
Overall, I liked it.

The Middle Passage (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)I used this video in my sophomore World History class when we were studying the beginnings of sea trade in the 1500s. This film was a major eye opener for my kids, as well as a vehicle allowing me to learn a few new things. Most of my students knew little or nothing about where and how the slave trade began, let alone the "contribution" made to this hideous practice by those who would become our nations forbears. They do now.
This film gave us a lot to talk about and was truly both an eye opener and a paradigm shifter. An excellent film in content, both historically and cinematically. I highly recommend this to any audience with a maturity level to handle the extreme emotion evoked by the suffering and heartache laid bare on the screen. Parents and teachers - be ready to discuss some hard truths with your kids. Excellently done!

(More customer reviews)Reading the synapsis for this flick you'd think you've stumbled onto the Holy Grail of Laura Gemser, Annie Belle and Joe D'Amato exploitation flix. Yeah, I did too, but this simply isn't the case. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was disappointed. Sure, we've got luscious Laura brought back from Africa as a 'gift' given to the White Hunter who saved her Abyssinian Chief father from his enemies (a fair trade?) strolling around semi-nude while the white women, Annie Belle (a secretary) and Lili Carati (the Hunter's wife), who've been having sapphic sessions in his absence, feign horror at the "smelly negroid woman" (no joke) thrust into their 1940's societal lives. When asked why she's never fully clothed, she replies, "White women have ugly bodies so they cover them to deceive their men". Classic. And we've got all the elements necessary for the Holy Grail of Eurosleaze, but something's missing. Most of the sex scenes are girl/girl until the end and are brief or edited. Annie Belle doesn't get fully naked, Laura is in only one worthwhile scene (a travesty), Lili's scenes are brief but the best, and the big finale sex scene was full of promise, but ultimately disappoints by showing us nothing. An abundance of missed opportunities left me wanting more. It's an OK soft-core flick that D'amato didn't have his heart in, like most of his 80's output. It's a box of fancy wrapped chocolates you can't wait to sink your teeth into, only to unwrap, bite down and find them hollow...

Band of Angels (1957) Review

(More customer reviews)Band of Angels is a very well-written screenplay about the oddities of race in America. I would have to compare it with "To Kill a Mockingbird" only I think Band of Angels is more thought provoking.
The plot involves a pre-Civil War Southern belle (whose father has sent her to school in the north which should give you a hint) who returns to Kentucky when her father falls ill. She arrives to see him being buried, and immediately afterwards hears first that her father was bankrupt and all the slaves will be sold and then that she herself is the child of a slave woman and therefore she too will be sold. It seems her father had an affair with a mulatto slave and raised the child as if the mother had been white and married to him. He has (somewhat unbelievably) concealed this from his child, who doesn't understand why her mother is buried outside the family cemetery. Our beautifully-dressed belle ends up being literally sold down the river -- she leaves pleasant Kentucky to be sold on a New Orleans auction block. (The further south you got, the worse conditions were: the other slaves are probably going to end up on a mosquito-infested sugar cane plantation and face a much worse fate than she does, but the movie fails to make this point). It's an eye-opener how particularly shocking the slave auction is when an apparently white woman is being auctioned -- which gives a lot of insight into subliminal racism.
Although a bit dated at parts (the music at the beginning, for example, and the scenes with the slaves singing like a choir), this is a very thought-provoking and yet entertaining movie. I highly recommend it.

Alex Haley's Queen (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)I have loved Alex Haley's "Queen" since I was a little girl. It's so ironic this came out on DVD because I have been periodically checking to see if it had been released on DVD yet. I am so glad to see it!
To respond to some concerns about the DVD, they did not leave any parts of the movie out. When the first episode ends, be sure to go to the main menu and choose Episode two. That will show the parts of the film that people say are missing.
Also, coming from someone who has read the book more than once, no character in the film is random. They are all there for a purpose and their story is relevant to Queen's life in the book.
