Butterfly (1982) Review

Lord only knows how old she looks and she makes Orson Welles and Stacy Keach nearly both die of heart attacks. It's really hard to remember what it's about -- something to do with gold mines and incest -- but the only point is to watch the diminutive firecracker cater to every sordid fantasy being conjured up by every dirty man and boy sitting alone in the darkened theater in, what? 1981? That Orson Welles is in the damn thing makes you feel kinda highbrow, but, please, you're there for Pia. If she gave us ten more of these, she could have been the most famous actress in the world, but, no, she had to go and do something with a garden hose in the next film, which is dreadful, and then go Vegas or something, I don't really know. But this is one of the good filthy ones.

Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams (1981) Review

Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams (1981)

Cheech and Chong look like they had a lot of fun filming "Nice Dreams" with their comedic friends. I've seen it at least ten times and I still find something I missed during previous viewings. I always laugh when I see the redheaded Chicken Man, or Cheech scooting around a padded cell in a straight jacket asking for someone to relieve an itch, and especially Michael Winslow's Jimi Hendrix routine. Don't expect a real plot and you won't be disappointed.

The 1981 stoner comedy "Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams" is the third of Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin's movies together, a meanderingly silly but agreeable farce about two clods selling marijuana treats from the back of an ice cream truck. Oblivious to an investigation by a couple of idiot cops whose boss (Stacy Keach) is constantly high from smoking evidence, the boys stumble through one crazy vignette after another. A few of these scenes feel like satiric spins on bad experiences Cheech and Chong might have had in the recording business, such as an evening spent with an obnoxious band manager who mistakes Tommy for Jerry Garcia and steals the Chinese food right off his restaurant table. Other craziness includes a night of sexual bliss interrupted by the arrival of a party girl's "Mexican-hating" biker-boyfriend, and incarceration in a padded room, where Timothy Leary supplies psychedelics to the clueless anti-heroes. Paul Reubens, Sandra Bernhard, and Linnea Quigley turn up in supporting roles. "--Tom Keogh"

Fat City (1972) Review

Fat City (1972)

This is a great grim movie. Huston did a heckuva job adapting Gardner's novel, but he started with grim material and went deeper into it. One memorable scene is when Keech manages to shake off his wine hangover and walks outside his transient hotel to try and make a new start on his life. He boldy heads out on the sidewalk, does a bit of bobbing and weaving on the curb. He's ready to turn over that new leaf but looks around at the city, and you can watch the wheels turn in his head as the he decides to go back inside. Punchdrunk. Rummy. It didn't take long to whip him this round, and all his rounds are pretty much like this. But he doesn't quit, the fight is still in him. The rage is there, but the skill and conditioning is long gone, so are his chances. They can beat him, they could kill him but they don't bother. The thing is, you can knock him down but he won't stay down, and sometimes that's all it takes. Between the white port in the alley, working the onion fields and listening to the old boxers talking about their lives, you wonder just what he's really teaching his new protege', and why either one even bothers. It's called life. It's not much but it's all we get, so take a tip from an old pro and don't stay on the canvas. Susan Tyrell does a great job, deserved her Oscar nomination, but reminded me of too many former flames perched on that barstool. Hmmm. Perhaps I'm trapped in the same...whack! Ooof,I didn't see that one coming. Life keeps hitting me with so many lefts, I'm begging for a right. If you're able to extract inspiration from a movie filled with scenes from a very tough life, watch Fat City. If you're looking for something fluffy, ain't nothin' here but a scram. Take it on the arches, pal.
