Barney - Good Clean Fun/Oh Brother She's My Sister (1998) Review

I feel that I'm qualified to comment on "Barney's Good,Clean Fun" video due to the fact that it got stuck in my VCR and I watched it at least 25 times in a row. That didn't bother my 2 1/2 year old however, he requested it daily anyway. I bought it for the segment on brushing your teeth("and having so much fun", as Barney sings) because getting my son to brush his was anything BUT fun. Miraculously, it worked. He now ASKS for his toothbrush. Do you need help getting your child to clean up after himself, take a bath or cover a sneeze? Never underestimate the power of a purple dinosaur!

Barney's Christmas Star Review

Barney's Christmas Star
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As usual, the show opens inside of Barney's Playhouse. There are four children: one African-American, one Asian and two Caucasian. There are two boys and two girls.
This show starts with Barney discussing the holidays and they show and sing about each of three tables: one with the nativity scene for Christmas, one for Hanukkah, and one for Kwanzaa. This is where all references to the religious aspect of the holidays and Christmas end. Then Barney sings a generic song "I love the holidays". A girl enters and announces it is snowing and they all go outside to play, they sing songs about winter and snow, and build a snowman.
The girl invites everyone to help decorate a big Christmas tree in a public park that her great-great grandfather planted many years ago. They are off to help out and sing "O Christmas Tree". Soon they realize the star for the top of the tree is missing. Grandma sends Barney and the children back to her house to look for it in the attic.
Once in the attic, Grandfather gives them free reign to search for the missing star. They sing songs and talk about what they find and sing non-religious Christmas songs. Classic toys such as Raggedy Ann, drummer boys (soldiers), and teddy bears are found with glee. Barney finds a copy of a picture book version of "The Night Before Christmas" and reads it aloud while images of Santa on his sleigh are shown. Santa comes down the chimney and eats cookies that have been left for him while two children watch.
BJ and Baby Bop appear out of nowhere and eventually they find the star. They take it to the park, sing a new song about the star to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and Barney helps put the star on top of the tree since none of the adults can reach it, even with a ladder. (Typical of Barney shows, Barney is more of an authority figure and more capable than the human adults, and "saves the day".)
Overall this show is very much centered on presents and decorations such as the Christmas tree. One scene asks what is best about the holidays and the boy says "wrapping presents, giving presents and opening presents". Christians may not like that the central focus of this Christmas show is not religious despite the title containing the word "Christmas".
Overall this is typical Barney fare: inclusion of many ethnicities, trying to be fair by showing multiple celebrations of various peoples, and making the main focus something that is not secular. The songs are new and old classics. It is very much like the TV shows in content and quality.
If your child loves the Barney TV shows then s/he will love this show. As for how much the adult finds this entertaining, it would be equal to how much the adult likes the television show. The best part of this show is that it is the typical innocence, song and dance we expect from the Barney programs, which I feel makes it a good choice for young children, or at least better than most programming that is out there for children! It is what it is: a Barney show!!

The Wiggles - Yummy Yummy Review

The Wiggles - Yummy Yummy
Average Reviews:

"Santa" brought the Wiggles "Wiggle Time" video to our house and my two daughters (ages 2 1/2 and 5 years of age) LOVED it, as did all of their friends. I particularly liked that the girls were up dancing and actually getting some exercise during the entire video, unlike most videos where kids are inclined to just sit and watch. For that reason I immediately ordered the "Yummmy Yummy" video.
The girls do love this one but my primary reason for ordering it . . . the "stand-up, dance and move" rather than "sit and stare" factor . . . isn't nearly as good in this one. There is much more down-time (as in 'sit down') on this one.
Still, THEY do enjoy it. If I were choosing between this or Wiggle Time as a parent, I'd recommend that you choose "Wiggle Time" in a heart beat for your kids, for gifts, etc.
Also, I do agree that the puppets are kind of creepy and, while they don't bother my children, they don't really keep their attention either.
They definitely love the upbeat tunes contained on this video though, every one of them.

Barney: Book Fair (2009) Review

Once again Barney has done a fantastic job teaching our children "living" skills that will help them on the playground, in school and in real life interaction with friends and family.
As a big proponent of reading and using one's imagination. I enjoyed the concept behind Barney's Book Fair.
Every time I think that my girls have "out grown" the big purple dinosaur I am pleasantly surprised to find him and his friends creating a new experience or teaching a new lesson that will intrigue and sustain my daughters' attention.
The book that accompanies the DVD is nicely illustrated and will help your child learn to count. Barney videos are truly a staple of childhood.Barney: Book Fair

Barney - Barney in Concert Review

Barney - Barney in Concert

My 20 month-old son was not a Barney fan until he was given this video as a gift. Unlike the Barney series on television, and the other videotaped Barney "concerts" (which are simply the television show on stage), this video is less a series of production numbers and dialogue, and more of an audience sing-along which encourages lots of at-home audience participation. Many of the songs will be familiar to most parents, allowing you to sing and interact with your child while he watches. Additionally, the more informal presentation of material is far more engaging than the other, more staged Barney videos, encouraging real participation as opposed to passive television watching. Lastly, this video combines education with entertainment, such as the alphabet sung in English, Hebrew and French by young audience members. A great way to have fun time with your child--or to give yourself 40 minutes to shower!

I first borrowed this for my two year grandson from the library. All afternoon long all I heard was again, Mimi, again! My grandson is a huge truck fan and the combination of toy and reality had him really stoked. When combined with the singing it was a guaranteed winner. Had to be really creative to get him to return it to the library. It's a stocking stuffer for sure now.

Since my family and I are going to see The Wiggles for the first time in 2 days,I was excited to see this video. All I can say is WOW!!!!It's going to be a spectacular show! The Wiggles and their dancers are engaging and energetic, particularly Anthony, who to me, steals the show(although I'm not convinced he really did those back flips!).The songs are all familiar here, but the energy and enthusiasm more then makes up for that. The Wiggles find fun ways to connect with their audience, such as suggesting dance moves, and,in the song We Love Athens, getting the crowd to yell "OPAH!!" every time the Captain holds up a sign. This concert takes place in Connecticut, in the good old USA ,and they look like they're having a great time.I reccommend this dvd to anyone over the age of 3 who wants to hear lots of great music and singing ,and be thoroughly entertained. Also of special interest, are the extras at the end of the DVD.Dorothy the dinosaur takes us on a special look back at all the highlights(and a few amusing hairdos!)of The Wiggles' amazing 15 year career, from their college days(when they actually played and sang on the sidewalk!)to the present. It is really neat to see.The bonus episode of Lights!Camera!Action! is cute too.Buy this video, and you and your children will NOT be disappointed. We love it!!

Barney - Barney's Super Singing Circus (2000) Review

Barney - Barney's Super Singing Circus (2000)
Average Reviews:

We have over 30 Disney videos and other cartoon videos, but this is the only one she cares for. I was stunned when I saw her sit through the whole movie at 2 1/2. She's a very active child and nothing would keep her still. At the end of the tape, she starts wining "Barney." I couldn't believe I was finding myself rewinding and playing this tape six times a day. It would be more if I hadn't told her that Barney was going to sleep.
The funniest thing is that I wondered why children love him so much, still do...back then I had no children...now my daughter is crazy about him and I'm finding myself buying Barney videos to keep her entertained and let mommy relax a little.

Make fun of Barney all you want, the kids still love him. I almost gave this 4 stars instead of 5 just because I miss Bob West & David Joyner (the original voice/character team). The new guys are doing a fine job but I can tell the difference. I don't think my son can, though! He just loves to watch, and you can't beat the positive messages. Barney may not be hip or trendy, but he's still #1 in my house.

The Wiggles - Getting Strong (2007) Review

The Wiggles - Getting Strong (2007)
Average Reviews:

I bought Getting Strong for my 2 year old son who is a huge Wiggles Fan. We have all of the DVDs that are out. I was afraid that Getting Strong was going to tank with him because this is the first DVD with Sam as the yellow Wiggle. To my surprise it is a big hit. Not only with my 2 year old but with my 4 year old. Finally a DVD that they both agree on.
Getting Strong is not like any other Wiggle DVD. Each Wiggle has an equal part in the singing and dancing. You actually hear Jeff sing!!!! It is colorful and has very catchy songs. This DVD also is very educational. The Wiggles teach colors, letters, shapes and letter sounds. The seem to have focused on education then song this go around. Not to say the songs are not cute as always.
For those who attended Wiggle World at Six Flags, these are the songs that were playing on all of the rides.
Very cute! Way to go!
