Sesame Street - Elmo in Grouchland (Sing and Play Video) (1999) Review

Sesame Street - Elmo in Grouchland (Sing and Play Video) (1999)

This is THE video to get for your little elmo fanatic! My 22 month old son can't seem to get enough of Sesame Street, especially Elmo. I bought this video to quench his never ending thirst for more Elmo and hit PAYDIRT!
This is isn't necessarily an educational video but it is tons of fun! The songs are great and Elmo is prominent throughout. It was even fun enough that I happily watch it with him (I usually take advantage of 'video time' to get chores done).
If your going to let your children watch t.v., Sesame Street is the wat to go. Normally don't advocate t.v. watching for children, but there is something special about Sesame Street that I make an exception for. My son has learned to count to ten, alot of the alphabet, and other miscellaneous things through a combination of myself and Sesame Street. For example, He recognizes letters and numbers when they come up on a video. When used as a supplement by parents (not a substitute), I think Sesame Street can be a useful (& fun) learning tool!
I also recommend these Sesame Street Videos:
-25th Anniversary, A Musical Celebration
-35th Anniversary, What's The Name Of That Song?
-The Best of Elmo (a must have for elmo lovers)
-Alphabet Jungle
-The Great Number Game
-Learning About Letters
-Learning About Numbers
-Monster Hits

Barney - Barney in Concert Review

Barney - Barney in Concert
Average Reviews:

My 20 month-old son was not a Barney fan until he was given this video as a gift. Unlike the Barney series on television, and the other videotaped Barney "concerts" (which are simply the television show on stage), this video is less a series of production numbers and dialogue, and more of an audience sing-along which encourages lots of at-home audience participation. Many of the songs will be familiar to most parents, allowing you to sing and interact with your child while he watches. Additionally, the more informal presentation of material is far more engaging than the other, more staged Barney videos, encouraging real participation as opposed to passive television watching. Lastly, this video combines education with entertainment, such as the alphabet sung in English, Hebrew and French by young audience members. A great way to have fun time with your child--or to give yourself 40 minutes to shower!

My son absolutely loves this one! I watched it with him and this unlike many of the other Barney video's actually asks your child to get involved. Certain characters come over to Barney's house for a short visit and Barney gives you a clue (which is sometimes a song) as to who the guest is and then asks you "Who do you think that is?". It's wonderful!

It's Potty Time (1991) Review

It's Potty Time (1991)

These are the words that finally got my 4 year old to use the potty.
She had been potty trained since she was 2 and 1/2 but adamently refused to do No.2 on the potty. She never had any accidents day or night, and would go get pulls up, put them on and go. (I know, your saying stop buying them) but, if she did not have them she would hold it, which would result in another trip to the doctor.
After watching the video for only 3 days, she has been using the potty everyday for a week without any problems. She is so proud of herself, as are we.
This is the video to buy if you have a very smart, but headstrong only child. Now I can put all the money that I would have spent on pull-ups in the college fund.
Its amazing how a child can learn from singing rhyming songs and watching a video. Its the best!

It's Potty Time Is Not For Parents. It was designed for children in order to take as much work off the parents as possible. Children should begin watching this video as soon asthey watch TV.They will not potty train at this time, but they will learn the songs and sing them all the time. When their bodies are ready, usually between 18 & 24 months, they begin to understand the songs they have been singing and quickly translate the words into action. In no time at all they develop proper bathroom etiquette.

This show is very cute! It teaches all-time favorite nursery rhymes in a fun way so that small children can learn them too. Mother Goose's book of nursery rhymes was eaten by a bookworm, so the children help her put the rhymes back in the book. It includes the rhymes/songs: Hey Diddle Diddle, Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater, Three Little Kittens, Jack and Jill, Little Miss Muffet, Here we go 'round the mullberry bush, and more!

This was a sweet old early TV show--and funny in parts because of the endearing Slim Pickens. I loved seeing these early Australian Shepherds. Two of my Aussies go back to Sisler's Shorty, who appears in the film. Aussie lovers everywhere need a copy of this to appreciate where the breed came from and how they do the job they were bred for.

Sesame Street Presents Elmo's Musical Adventures - Peter and The Wolf (2000)
Average Reviews:

This video is brilliant, but I had not realized how brilliant until a few days ago when we picked up a book version of the story. [We have owned this tape for about 2 years.]
As we were going along my 3 year-old son was humming various --and appropriate!-- sections of the music that corresponded to the action on the page.
In addition, my 5 year-old daughter was telling me about what instrument was used to portray the characters. When I was humming she reminded me that I should try to sound more like an oboe (for the duck).
So Five BIG Stars for this video. Not only does it tell the classic Prokofiev tale, but it opened the doors to musical composition in ways that I had not even dared to hope for. Bravo!

Rock With Barney (1992) Review

Rock With Barney (1992)

This is the last show with "Barney and the Backyard Gang." This show has lots of songs, and it is very good. The kids go to a movie studio and pretend to put on a show with Barney. They do a commercial for cereal, put on a puppet show, paint their faces, pretend to travel to an island, and rock and roll! The kids also meet some new friends, including Kathy--played by Lauren King, who stays with Barney & Friends until 1995. This show has a lot of songs, and it will keep your child's attention very well. It includes the songs: Apples and Bananas, Six Little Ducks, Me and My Teddy, and Good Manners. I recommend this for all Barney lovers!

The Chosen (2010) Review

The Chosen (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Judging from the many questions I get through my website's Hasidism FAQ, the book "The Chosen" is now a literary classic. It is being read in high school literature classes all over the world. Excerpts are a staple in multi-cultural textbooks. So nu -- why is this great movie STILL out of print? Is the movie industry really so unaware that there's a market out there? I certainly hope it's going be re-released on DVD sometime soon.
Now granted, the book is always better than the movie, and this case is no exception. The opening scene at the baseball game, which is many pages long in the book (and is often the scene excerpted in textbooks) is not well-developed in the movie at all. That's too bad, because the ball game sets up the whole story by showing the deep animosity between the boys at the two schools. Also, the way that Mr. Malter (Reuven's father) is played in the movie gives the impression that he is a Reform Jew. In fact, that's what most viewers I've talked to assume him to be. He's not Reform in the book, however. Both he and his son Reuven are observant Jews, what would probably be called "Modern Orthodox" today. The Modern Orthodox do not wear traditional garb like Hasidim, but in terms of religious practices (dietary laws, the Sabbath, ethical behavior, etc.) the Orthodox and the Hasidim are not really all that far apart. This point is made in the book as the story progresses, but is not so clear in the movie, because people tend to focus on the clothes.
In the book, the friction between Mr. Malter and Reb Saunders centers on issues of Talmud scholarship (textual critical vs. literalist readings of the text). The movie tends to focus more on the question of Zionism. I suppose the producers felt they had to "dumb down" the story to appeal to the general public, but a lot of the plot was lost in the process.
Still, in spite of its faults, "The Chosen" is one of the better films about Hasidic Jews. It would be very helpful to be able to show the movie along with reading the book in class, especially in areas where there are no Jews and the teachers are trying to teach about this novel without ever having seen a Hasidic Jew. So come on, production folks -- let's wake up and re-issue this film!
(P.S. A bit of trivia: Chaim Potok, author of "The Chosen," makes a cameo appearance as the Talmud teacher in this film.)

Sid the Science Kid: Weather Kid Sid Review

Sid the Science Kid: Weather Kid Sid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think Sid the Science Kid is an adorable show as do my boys, so I knew they would enjoy this one. It is a show about a kindergarten class that uses science to learn. There are four friends, each different and unique, but all best friends. This DVD is especially neat because it is all about weather, which is a hard subject to explain to kids, at least to my 3 year old! The episodes cover rain and clouds, using sunscreen and the sun, snow and cold temperatures, and wind! Sid has some great adventures in these episodes and the show really does explain science in a way for young kids to understand. There is also lots of singing involved, which is quite cute! Overall, I would recommend this DVD to any parent looking for ways to help their children understand why rain is okay, what clouds really are (no not cotton candy!), why sunscreen is important, how cold weather can be fun, and how wind can be fun (flying kites!)

Puppy Party (2009) Review

Puppy Party (2009)

Whether you are a dog lover or looking to get a dog, Puppy Party is an new, adorable DVD from NCircle Entertainment. It is 70 minutes of dog-filled fun and perfect for both kids and adults. Now I admit it, I am not an animal lover, but I did enjoy this DVD.
Filled with over 25 breeds and hundreds of adorable puppies, the DVD is really jam packed with puppies. There are Heartwarming puppy moments, Hilarious puppy antics, and Puppy Facts about each breed. The DVD is even educational as it gives information about each breed and showcases the dogs.
My youngest son loves this DVD as he loves dogs. Even though he doesn't understand the facts or the different breeds, he cracks up at when the puppies do funny things. I think this DVD would be especially perfect if you are planning on getting a puppy as it would get your child excited or even to put on the TV for your own dog to watch. (My mother-in-law leaves the TV on for her dog.) It really is a cute DVD and for the price you can't beat it!

Kung Fu: The Complete Series Collection (1972) Review

Kung Fu: The Complete Series Collection (1972)

There are lots of reviews which already talk (extensively) about why Kung Fu was such a great show, and worth owning on DVD. Instead I just wanted to make sure people know what they are getting with this set...
I hesitated to buy this set at first because it had all 3 seasons packaged together, but didn't mention anything about special features, etc. I wanted to make sure I had the commentaries & featurettes that the individual seasons boasted. Eventually, I bought this version because the price difference won me over (just before the holidays it was $35 + super saver shipping!) and I was pleased to find out that the set contained all 3 seasons as they appear individually, as well as a nice little slip cover to store them all together. The individual seasons & this package are the same, except that this one costs far less.

WordWorld: Lots of Letters Box Set Review

WordWorld: Lots of Letters Box Set
Average Reviews:

I cannot say enough about this show. It is one of the most imaginative, fun and educational shows out there. My son is a letter hound and is in love with this show (27 months)I think if any child is going to watch any tv it should be this show over almost any other. The only reason I put a four on this review is to draw attention to possible duplicates if you already have other videos. I am guessing that this is because Lots of Letters is a compilation set of all of their videos. With that in mind you should expect to see some that are on other disks. Kind of like a best of. If you are trying to budget what you spend you should know what is on other videos. If you are only going to buy one Lots of Letters is the one. The best bang for your buck. Then by the Christmas, Valentines Day, and Halloween disks. They are very cute. I did not know what was on the box set since I was new to Word World so I bought more than I would have if I had known.
IF you by this box set you might not want to buy Sheep's A Start. Three of the four videos on Sheep's A Star are in this box set. The Birds, W Drought, Chef Sheep. The only one no in the box set is Princess Sheep off that video.Three of the four videos on Flying Ant are in this box set: Flying Ant,Catch that C and Play Ball. The one that is not on the video is Shuffleword. So again, If you already have Lots of Letters it might not be worth the purchase for that one extra show.
Welcome to world word has two shows that are in the box set Lots of Letters: Happy Birthday Dog and The Mystery of the Disappearing Pie.
Once again, this is one of the most amazing shows I have ever made for kids. My son fell in love with it so if you have a little one that is just in love with letters or a child that struggles...this is for you. The holiday shows are great for kids when you want to treat then to a show but want it to be educational.

Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days (2009) Review

Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD set was nostalgic and at times almost brought tears to my eyes. For those parts (The ladybug picnic, The pinball counting to 12, the cartoon typewriter, the cast iron "I", etc) I would give it ten stars. Sesame Street literally shaped my life as a young child. I watched it religously until age seven (I'm thirty-five now). The reason for my three star rating is because of the lengthy songs and dull skits, which unfortunately took most of the time. Leena Horne singing didn't do it for me at five and she especially doesn't do it for me now at thrity-five. Sorry, but same to you Diana Ross. I wanted to see more of the aliens ("yep, yep, yep...nope, nope, nope"), Bert and Ernie, Super Grover, and the Tiddly-winks (who were suspiciously absent).
Watching this DVD made me realize how they should now call Sesame Street, just plain Elmo's World. That's who it's really all about now anyway. I loved the good old days when ALL the characters received equal billing. Now it seems like the first forty minutes of Sesame Street is just filler until Elmo, the big star, shows up. Don't get me wrong, I like Elmo, and so do my three little ones, but all the other characters have their own personalities and ability to teach as well. This DVD is a reminder of that.
So CTW if you're reading this, I would buy every single episode of Sesame Street from 1974-79 if you put it out on DVD. Stop teasing us with these short DVD releases showing only clips. To those of you who are thinking of purchasing this DVD set, I would get it, it is worth it. You're sure to see something that will bring back a memory.

Baby Einstein - Meet the Orchestra - First Instruments (2006) Review

Baby Einstein - Meet the Orchestra - First Instruments (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To tell the truth, I was a little disappointed in the DVD. I have been waiting for it to be released, and my expectations were very high. All in all though, I do have to admit that it is a good introduction to musical instruments for small children. My son is 19 months old. He definitely enjoyed the video, and I think it will be beneficial for him as well. I'll list what I feel are the positive and negative aspects about the video below.
Good Things:
*Tons of real footage of children and adults playing instruments solo, in small groups, and in full orchestras. Scenes of marching bands were included too which is nice.
*The video was broken out logically into all of the major sections: Brass, Woodwinds, Strings, and Percussion. The piano & guitar were introduced together at the end. Both the String and Percussion section included all of the major instruments one might think of. Though, there are so many different percussion instruments that a Percussionist might disagree. :)
*Lots of puppets which my son always loves. There is nothing more fun for him than watching those silly hippos!
Not so good things:
*The brass and woodwind section left out some major instruments and included some minor ones instead. The woodwind section introduced the recorder which is RARELY (if ever?) found in an orchestra and left out the oboe which has ALWAYS been a critical instrument in the orchestra. The brass section included the bugle and left out the euphonium. This doesn't bother me as much, but it doesn't make a lot of sense.
*In many of the scenes with elementary children and junior high children, it was obvious that the kids were actors who had never held the particular instrument in their lives. Would it have been terribly difficult for them to borrow kids from real music programs who knew how to hold their instruments properly? That is the first thing you learn before ever playing your first note. Granted, the babies and toddlers don't know how to hold the instruments, but I don't have issues with that.
*Some of the music sounded obviously synthesized. When introducing what an instrument sounds like, shouldn't the real instrument be used rather than a synthesized version? I did notice this only in a few places, most obiously with the "recorder".
Here is a synopsis of the instruments introduced. It is not listed anywhere on the DVD cover.
Brass:
Trumpet
Trombone
Tuba
French Horn
Bugle
Woodwinds:
Flute
Clarinet
Saxophone
Bassoon
Recorder
Strings:
Violin
Viola
Cello
Bass
Harp
Percussion:
Drums
Xylophone
Cymbals
Timpani
Tambourine
Piano & GuitarMy husband and I have a very strong background in instrumental music, so we had very high expecations and were being very critical when evaluating this dvd. Our goal is to instill a love for music in our son from a young age, and since this DVD is for young children, I guess it is OK that it isn't 100% perfect. I do believe that this DVD will be a great for our son, and he enjoys it. Had I not had particular issues with it, I would have given it 5 stars.
Also, please note that it is definitely not for the youngest Baby Einstein audience. My son would not have enjoyed it a few months ago, and I believe he will continue to appreciate it more as he gets older.
