(More customer reviews)I'm giving this box set of Muppet movies four and a half stars instead of five only because they didn't include Muppet Treasure Island or the Muppet Christmas Carol in this pack, which are also great Muppet movies!!
I grew up watching the Muppets. Now in my twenties, I get a kick out of watching them all over again with my kids! They are so funny! I can't believe how many adult jokes are in these films that went completely over my head as a child! I laugh at these movies just as much as my kids do (if not more!)
They are all great movies. My favorites are The Great Muppet Caper and Muppets from Space. But all four are excellent!
The Muppet Movie is The Muppets first full length feature film! Kermit heads out for Hollywood after being discovered by a big time talent agent who tells Kermit that he is destined to be a star. Along the way to Hollywood, Kermit makes friends with the cast of loveable Muppets: Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great, and Miss Piggy. Together they decide that they are going to be famous movie stars and embark on a journey where they run into other famous movie stars: Bob Hope, Edgar Bergen, Milton Berle, Mel Brooks, Dom DeLuise, Elliott Gould, Steve Martin and more!! But the evil Doc Hopper starts chasing after them because HE wants Kermit (or, his legs anyway) to do the advertising for his Frog Legs company! When he kidnaps Miss Piggy, Kermit rushes to the rescue and falls right into Doc's trap! Now they have to find a way to escape and still get to Hollywood before Doc makes Frog leg soup out of Kermit!!!
The Great Muppet Caper is full of action, adventure, and humor! Kermit, Fozzie Bear, and Gonzo all work for a Chicago newspaper and travel to Great Britain and vow to get to the bottom of the robbery of Lady Holiday's diamond necklace - and end up meeting a ton of Muppet friends along the way! There are special guest appearances by: Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, Steve Whitmire, Loiuse Gould, Kathryn Mullen, and more!
Muppets Take Manhatten is a story about an aspiring Broadway director, Kermit the Frog... He has written a musical that includes all of his Muppet friends and he has finally found someone who will produce it on Broadway!!! But, a week before opening night, Kermit gets hit by a car and smack his head on the ground and gets AMNESIA! Kermmit doesn't know who he is or where he is, so he creates a new life for himself and gets a job at an advertising agency on Madison ave. Now his Muppet friends can't find him and the clock is ticking down to show time! The hunt is on - they turn over every rock of Manhatten looking for Kermit... can they do it before the show is completely ruined??
And finally, in Muppets From Space, Kermit takes a back seat for a change to Gonzo The Great! Gonzo begins to feel left out of the loop - he has no family members and really has no clue of who he really is. But when he gets a message from his relatives from outer space that they are going to come pick him up, he tries every way possible to try to communicate with them! Everyone thinks Gonzo has lost his marbles - but when word gets out on Miss Piggy's talk show, UFO Mania, a secret government agency captures Gonzoi and will do ANYTHING to find out when his alien relatives are coming to earth! So it is up to his best firends: Kermit, Rizzo, Foozie bear, and the hilarious Pepe to save Gonzo and make the earth safe for his relatives to land!!! Special guest appearances by: Ray liotta, Andie MacDowell, David Arquette, and more!

Muppet Classic Theater (1994) Review

(More customer reviews)In this awesome video collection, the Muppets take turns at telling six spoofs of classic fairy tales. The six stories told are "The Three Little Pigs", "King Midas", "Rumplestiltskin", "The Boy Who Cried Wolf", "The Elves & The Shoemaker", and "The Emperor's New Clothes". This video is hilarious and during a couple of the stories I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. My favorite in the collection is "The Elves & The Shoemaker". A tape that everyone in the family is sure to enjoy. Gotta love the Muppets.

Muppet Treasure Island (1996) Review

(More customer reviews)I've seen all the muppet movies, but this one is my favorite. Granted, the first Muppet Movie had awesome songs by the great Paul Willaims, and the Great Muppet Caper was a terrific spoof on classic Hollywood films. But this movie is different.
I believe it was Brian Henson who said that the difference in this movie is the world that we see. In the previous muppet movies, the muppets were strange creatures living in the human world. But in Muppet Treasure Island, it's the humans who are the odd ones. This is a "Muppet World" through and through. The first clue as to the validity of this statement is the opening credits. The main characters are played by Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, the Great Gonzo, and the other muppets. Not by puppeteers. By muppets.
Despite the fact that the movie stays pretty true to the book Treasure Island in terms of plot, the execution of it is completely wild muppet madness. Anything and everything is made fun of in this movie (including the fact that it's a movie!) For instance, in several of the excellent songs sung by the muppets (and a wonderful Tim Curry playing Long John Silver), the characters make reference to the fact that it IS a musical number.
And speaking of musical numbers, the songs in this movie are absolutely great. My family bought the soundtrack, and they listen to the songs all the time (especially "When You're a Professional Pirate"). And let's not forget the excellent background music by Hans Zimmer, who still knows how to crank out a good old-fashioned film score.
This movie is filled with all sorts of wackiness, right down to the names of some of the charcters (old Tom, real old Tom, Dead Tom), and jokes made in the movie come back later to make them ever funnier ("Dead Tom's Dead! Long John shot him!"). But this movie is more than just great fun. It's a well scripted, well acted, and in general well made film. It's got everything. Action, adventure, romance. And of course, singing. It's great family entertainment, with a lot of heart and a wonderful message about friendship. If you love the muppets, definitely see this movie. Especially if you like the story of Treasure Island...

Technically stunning, and thematically dark, this amazing adaptation of Sergei Prokoviev's classic children's piece, features marvelous stop-motion animation from director Suzie Templeton.
The film places "Peter" squarely back into its Russian origins, but rather than an idealized rural-agrarian past, it places the story in a more modern setting, amid glum, drab, rundown shacks and tattered forests, a grim vision of a Soviet-era or post-Soviet Eastern Europe, complete with gun-toting thugs (the hunters of the original story here seem more like cold-hearted militiamen) and the nearby village appears as a rundown, dismal cinderblock outpost. Amid this crushing gloom, Peter finds wonder and joy, unlocking a secret garden where he and his friends the bird and the duck (both crippled and unable to fly) are able to play and forget the bleakness around them.
While this may sound a bit miserable, the film itself is a marvel: the amount of work that went into this film is amazing, with Templeton devoting a full five years of her life to completing the piece. Equally engrossing are the added special features, including a making-of video and interview with Templeton and her cohorts that gives a sense of the sheer scope of their project, and the level of detail that went into this production. While the film itself may be a bit dark for smaller children, it will enthrall older kids and adults alike... This is a real class act, a film worth having and viewing for years to come. Recommended! Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD set was nostalgic and at times almost brought tears to my eyes. For those parts (The ladybug picnic, The pinball counting to 12, the cartoon typewriter, the cast iron "I", etc) I would give it ten stars. Sesame Street literally shaped my life as a young child. I watched it religously until age seven (I'm thirty-five now). The reason for my three star rating is because of the lengthy songs and dull skits, which unfortunately took most of the time. Leena Horne singing didn't do it for me at five and she especially doesn't do it for me now at thrity-five. Sorry, but same to you Diana Ross. I wanted to see more of the aliens ("yep, yep, yep...nope, nope, nope"), Bert and Ernie, Super Grover, and the Tiddly-winks (who were suspiciously absent).
Watching this DVD made me realize how they should now call Sesame Street, just plain Elmo's World. That's who it's really all about now anyway. I loved the good old days when ALL the characters received equal billing. Now it seems like the first forty minutes of Sesame Street is just filler until Elmo, the big star, shows up. Don't get me wrong, I like Elmo, and so do my three little ones, but all the other characters have their own personalities and ability to teach as well. This DVD is a reminder of that.
So CTW if you're reading this, I would buy every single episode of Sesame Street from 1974-79 if you put it out on DVD. Stop teasing us with these short DVD releases showing only clips. To those of you who are thinking of purchasing this DVD set, I would get it, it is worth it. You're sure to see something that will bring back a memory.
