Deadly Matrimony (1992) Review

To think about this type of criminal activity having a chance to exist is unexplainable. I don't understand the audacious mindset of a mob boss thinking he could "own" a city and its law enforcement ranks, but these circumstances are exactly what Jack Reed encountered. Treat Williams plays the role of Masters eerily well. Dennehy of course, is splendid in the role of Reed. He knows Masters is a murderer without remorse, but he also knows the corrupt department he works for is just waiting for him to make one false move...

Baby Monitor: Sound of Fear (1998) Review

Baby Monitor: Sound of Fear (1998)

In this nice little thriller, the rich wife of a cheating husband hires a thug duo to kill the babysitter, who is pregnant with the hubby's child. The thugs decide to hold their 5 year old boy for ransom too and collect diamonds along with their hit money. Problem is, they've gone to the wrong condo, killed the wrong woman, and now have to deal with the real babysitter out to protect both boys. Suspenseful and not cheesy like some 'babysitter' killer movies, this one portrays the pretty blonde babysitter (played by cute Josie Bissett) as a likeable medical student with a lot of common sense and guts!!! The only thing I didn't like about the movie was that by the end, I was ready to kill the annoying 5 year old boy myself!!! Rated R for some violence, this must have been a made-for-cable movie, and should've been rated PG-13.

Hidden In Silence - Based on a True Story (1996) Review

Hidden In Silence - Based on a True Story (1996)

Kellie Martin shines in this fine adaptation of the story of the young Catholic Polish teenager who put her life on the line to save the Jews in her country. Faced with incredible odds, she trusted God to deliver them, and He answered her prayers.
The ensemble cast is magnificent, and what was really nice about the film was the fact that it was not very explicit in the violence against the Jews. You saw a few minor scenes, but it wasn't the point of the movie, anyway. If you want really explicit scenes, there's always Schinder's List, but that was a different story.
This is a really nice teaching tool for your older children, and provides a launching pad for a dialogue on the Holocaust.
Highly recommended!!!

Face of Evil (1996) Review

GROWING PAIN's Tracey Gold gets to bear her fangs as a psychotic young woman who kills people and takes their identities. Her latest: she kills a young college student and assumes her place at a ritzy little college where she sets her sights on her roomie's hunky and rich dad.
Gold is quite good in the role, and she gets good support from Perry King as the dad and Shawnee Smith (SAW movies) as her goody two shoes roommate.
It's all been done before but Gold is so despicable, you want to see her get her just desserts...but...no spoiler here!

After the Silence: True Stories Collection TV Movie (1996) Review

After the Silence: True Stories Collection TV Movie (1996)

I first saw this movie on a cable channel, and saw through the made-for-tv nonsense. The story is about a young woman who is deaf. Her story starts, in the movie that is, with her abusive father dealing drugs in the living room of a very small apartment. Laura, played by Kellie Martin, is taking a basket of freshly folded laundry, and happens in on her father. Furious, he begins to hit her, until her mother attempts to step in. With his rage focused on her mother, Laura desperately tries to escape from his wrath. He charges back at Laura, and literally scares her out of a two story window. Rather than face him, she decides to drop, to what could possibly her demise.
This is how the movie starts. And i was captured immediately. The acting for the most part is very well done. The two main actresses, JoBeth Williams, and Kellie Martin are pretty much the focus of the entire film. As this was made for TV, there are some eye rolling scenes, but overall, they were excusable because of the power behind the story. This movie, while not perfect, has a lot of heart, and often makes you smile. While i agree with the previous reviewer that Hollywood should do something about subtitles, i don't fault this movie for not being the pioneer in that aspect. They took a good story, and did what they could with it.
I would rate this as 4 1/2 if i could. The cheesy aspect takes little away from the story, and even if it did, i didn't notice it.
I applaud Kellie Martin for her performance in this movie, as she relies on body language to get her feelings across, and does a fantastic job at doing so.
I own this movie. There are no special features, or even chapter selection on the main menu, but i don't regret purchasing it at all.

Paradise Lost - The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996) Review

Paradise Lost - The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996)

Paradise Lost is definitely one of the most mind-blowingest movies I've ever seen.
Not that it's in my list of all-time favorite films; it's just that this is the kind of film that really knocks you back: it'll change your mind about a few things and really make you think. You won't be able to forget it.
So why haven't these people issued it on DVD? What's wrong with them? I keep recommending it to people but they can only find it on VHS, which nobody wants to buy anymore. This has to be one of the most memorable films I've ever seen. What are they thinking?
Without telling you too much, here's what you need to know: there has been a murder in rural Arkansas, and some local boys who don't quite fit in (i.e., they have been dressing in black and listening to Metallica) are fingered for it. The film, a gut-wrenching documentary, follows them through their trial and analyzes the evidence for and against their innocence. The film is especially recommended if you enjoy documentaries that get into forensic evidence.
Have you ever been in a plane when, just for second, it abruptly loses some altitude, and your stomach seems like it dropped through the floor? You're gonna feel like that for a couple of days or so after seeing this movie.
I should also note that, in addition to a direct-to-video followup film, the internet is STILL abuzz by people who were affected by this film and ardently follow the fate of the "West Memphis Three."
No connection, incidentally, with the Milton epic.
UPDATE: This has finally come out on DVD. Here: Paradise Lost - The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills

One of the most influential documentaries in recent years, the Sundance favorite PARADISE LOST is an emotionally raw, must-see crime doc from two of today's most exciting filmmakers--Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (the team behind Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, Brother's Keeper). This dark odyssey began with the tragic murders of three 8-year-old boys, whose bodies were discovered in a shallow creek in West Memphis, Arkansas. The community demanded justice, and one month later the police delivered: three local teenagers accused of sacrificing the boys as part of a Satanic ritual. Despite overwhelming public antipathy towards them, defendants Damian Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley steadfastly maintained their innocence. Although the trial produced virtually no physical evidence connecting the defendants to the crime, the town, the jury, and the police felt that they had their killers, and used the young men's penchant for heavy metal music and black clothing and a fascination with the Wicca religion as evidence of their guilt. With unprecedented access to all the players, Berlinger and Sinofsky captured the events as they unfolded before their cameras. From actual courtroom footage and clandestine jailhouse interviews to behind-the-scenes strategy meetings and intimate portraits of grief-stricken families, PARADISE LOST is a shocking yet uniquely American real-life drama.DVD Features: Exclusive Trial Footage; Timeline of Events; Trial Updates; Theatrical Trailer; Filmmaker Biographies; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection

The Stranger Beside Me (1995) Review

The Stranger Beside Me (1995)

Tiffani Amber Thiessen plays Jennifer, a woman who marries a man whose past is full of secrets. Initially Jennifer is happy when Chris asks her to marry him. He wants to join the Navy and he promises to protect her. But when they move to California strange things start happening on base--a peeping Tom starts looking in women's windows and eventually women start being raped. Jennifer's husband admits that he looked in some windows but promises that nothing else happened. Since Jennifer is pregnant, she decides to give him a second chance. When they return home to New Mexico, once again women are being raped and Jennifer begins to suspect that her husband is to blame.
The Stranger Beside Me is classic Lifetime. Tiffani Amber Thiessen has made some of my favorite Lifetime movies, including She Fought Alone, and she excels in her role as a wife who can't trust her husband. This movie isn't great by any means, but if you're in the mood for a little drama that will keep you entertained, you don't have to look much further than this.

If Someone Had Known (1995) Review

If Someone Had Known (1995)

I remember seeing this on tv about 10 years ago. It was well written and Kellie Martin was perfect for the role of the people pleasing young girl. It was based on a true story of a girl who marries young and winds up being physically and verbally abused by her spouse. It is a very violent movie. I don't think anyone under 13 should watch it, but it is so realistic. Abuse can happen to anyone, even a policeman's daughter. The way to help prevent abuse is to realize that it can happen to anyone and to pay attention to the warning signs. I think parents should watch this movie with their kids once they start dating. My thanks to Kellie Martin who is so passionate about doing movies that are able to impact lives for the better. I am glad she is so wise and caring, she really has made a difference in my life.
P.S. For Kellie Martin fans...I just found out that Life Goes On will be released on dvd in the summer of 2006! It's about time!!!!!! I hope they will eventually release all four seasons of LGO, the most wonderful tv show ever.
