Sex Education: Pesky Puberty DVD Review

This DVD is amazing simply for the irony value.
Remember those crazy sex education videos they showed you in high school. That's what these are.
The tracks get more and more ironic as they go on. What I did with the DVD was put it on in the background at a party and as we got more wasted we just could not stop watching it and cracking up.
I think the funniest is when they tell the girls not to kiss boys or they will get pregnant and have to quit school. We howled with laughter.
I could easily see these things played in the background at a hip club or something.

This DVD is a good reminder that while attitudes towards teenagers and sex have changed with the times, the cold hard facts of life and sex have stayed the same. No matter what age we live in, teenagers are going to go through some very confusing and embarrassing changes and adults are going to have to find a way to help them understand what is going on with their hormones and their bodies. All of the films on this DVD were shot around the 1950s and are remarkably straightforward. We often think of the 1950s as an era that was very conservative when it comes to sex, but these films make the case that when they had to be parents and teachers could be pretty direct on the subject. That isn't to say that some of the clips are not amusing when looked at through the lens of time. The opening clip starts out talking about white wedding dresses and then descends, for example, into a conversation about menstruation. That said, other clips on this disk pull no punches. It's definitely worth a look at all of the films as they are in very good condition.

This movie is so bad. The orginal with Pat Boone and James Mason is so much better. I can't understand why it is not on DVD.

Joel McCrea Double Feature: "The Most Dangerous Game"/Bird Of Paradise Review

Joel McCrea Double Feature: The Most Dangerous Game/Bird Of Paradise

To be honest, the only reason I got this dvd was because of the 1932 classic "The Most Dangerous Game", which I've desperately wanted to see ever since I read the story by Richard Connell in high school. But surprisingly enough I enjoyed both movies, as well as the bonus features.
The first movie, 1932's "Bird of Paradise", is honestly a very ridiculous movie, but I found it entertaining. Joel McCrea and his comrades are traveling on a yacht in the South Seas when they find a beautiful island inhabited by natives who worship a volcano. McCrea nearly drowns while fishing one day, but he is saved by a beautiful native-girl (played by the ultra-hot Dolores Del Rio). It's love at first sight, but when her chief comes between their happy romance, they flee to a deserted island nearby. Will she choose McCrea over her loyalty to her people? Watch and find out!
Next, we have the 1932 classic, "The Most Dangerous Game", where a lunatic hunter, Count Zaroff (played to creepy perfection by Leslie Banks), has his own mysterious island where his prey are shipwreck victims. But, his latest shipwreck victims, Joel McCrea and Fay Wray, prove to be more than a match for the crazed Zaroff. This very entertaining classic was filmed at the same time that "King Kong" was filmed, using many of the same sets and crew.
The picture quality is pretty good considering the movies are over 70 years old (and the dvd is so inexpensive!). The bonus features are a fun 1932 Betty Boop cartoon and the original theatrical trailer of "King Kong". I'm very glad I bought this dvd and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an old-fashioned island adventure!

The Best of Everything (1959) Review

The Best of Everything (1959)

I saw this film back in 1959 when it first came out and I also read Rona Jaffe's book on which it was based. It was about the world of New York secretaries. And it seemed to speak directly to me as I was then working as a secretary for a large management-consulting firm. I loved it then because it seemed so real. Now, 44 years later, I'm reminded of that reality.
I remember wearing white gloves and a hat to work each day, even in the summer. I remember setting my hair in pincurls. I remember my electric typewriter, which was the latest technological advance. I was married then and remember being addressed as "Mrs." by my boss, even though I was only 19 years old. All the secretaries had desks next to each other in one open room; it was years before the advent of cubicles made famous by the Dilbert cartoon. And years before any of my fellow co-workers aspired to anything other than marriage and children. The one female executive was pitied and looked at as a sour old maid.
In the film Joan Crawford is cast as that one office "witch", who had not married because she was involved with a married man and was paying for her bad decision. Indeed, there was more than one married man involved in affairs in the film, but it was always the woman who was made to suffer. Hope Lange had the role of the young hopeful who, because of being jilted by her boyfriend, starts to achieve some success in business. Then there is Diane Baker, fresh faced and innocent at the beginning, but whose life is almost ruined by the wrong man. Most pitiful of all though is Suzy Parker, who gives up her secretarial job to be an actress and is used and then dropped by an important director. The men are all cads with the exception of Stephen Boyd who accuses Hope Lange of wanting to achieve success because she's afraid of being a "real woman". Brian Ahern is a lecher who is always pinching the girls; their reaction though is typical of the times --they just laugh it off and don't take him seriously. Robert Evans is a seducer with no morals. And Louis Jourdan is the director who keeps a girl around only for as long as she amuses him.
This is a film that could never have be made today. All the women are secretaries. All the men are bosses. Everyone is white and middle class. They all have the same values. However, in spite of all that, it is a really good story. It moves fast and held my interest throughout. And the acting is quite good. In a limited way I found myself really caring about the characters. I really do know people who were just like those depicted on the screen. Therefore, I recommend this video - even if it's for no other reason to see what life was like back in 1959.

Rona Jaffe's best-selling novel comes to life in this witty tale about the personal and professional lives of the men and women in a New York publishing firm.Heading a huge cast. JOAN CRAWFORD "gives an excellently etched performance" (Hollywood Reporter) as a tough-talking editor who can't seem to win at love. There are a few more interesting stories around the office than there are in the manuscripts at Fabian Publishers.Among the principal players: a new secretary (HOPE LANG) who quickly gets her boss's (CRAWFORD) job and romances a handsome editor (STEPHEN BOYD); a Colorado secretary (DIANE BARKER) who falls for the wrong man (ROBERT EVANS); and a would be actress (SUZY PARKER) who's jilted by a two-timing director (LUIS JOURDAN).Slick and glossy, The Best Of Everything is a panorama of office politics before women's liberation.

Forever 50's (2003) Review

This is a very nice collection of material! The first two discs are public-domain material, and are great for providing material for student video reports. Incidentally, these two discs were released by Diamond Entertainment under the title "Fantastic 50's Collection" (94807); readily available for around $12 or less. Quality is identical-the two differ only in their menus. (The more expensive version is much easier to navigate!)
