Sex Education: Pesky Puberty DVD Review

Sex Education: Pesky Puberty DVD

This DVD is amazing simply for the irony value.
Remember those crazy sex education videos they showed you in high school. That's what these are.
The tracks get more and more ironic as they go on. What I did with the DVD was put it on in the background at a party and as we got more wasted we just could not stop watching it and cracking up.
I think the funniest is when they tell the girls not to kiss boys or they will get pregnant and have to quit school. We howled with laughter.
I could easily see these things played in the background at a hip club or something.

This DVD is a good reminder that while attitudes towards teenagers and sex have changed with the times, the cold hard facts of life and sex have stayed the same. No matter what age we live in, teenagers are going to go through some very confusing and embarrassing changes and adults are going to have to find a way to help them understand what is going on with their hormones and their bodies. All of the films on this DVD were shot around the 1950s and are remarkably straightforward. We often think of the 1950s as an era that was very conservative when it comes to sex, but these films make the case that when they had to be parents and teachers could be pretty direct on the subject. That isn't to say that some of the clips are not amusing when looked at through the lens of time. The opening clip starts out talking about white wedding dresses and then descends, for example, into a conversation about menstruation. That said, other clips on this disk pull no punches. It's definitely worth a look at all of the films as they are in very good condition.

Russ Meyer's Up (1976) Review

Russ Meyer's Up (1976)

"Up" is so much better than other soft porn movies. It has lots of large, naked breasts and bizarre, creative dialogue and plot. The acting, cinematography, editing and picture quality is all top-notch stuff. However, I'm not sure it is worth the exhorbitant price. If Russ is going to charge 30-40 dollars for his fine films, he could at least spend an hour and a half doing a commentary track.

Totally F***ed Up Review

Totally F***ed Up

Independent filmmaker Gregg Araki takes an everday look at several gay and lesbian teenagers (4 gay boys and a very cute baby dyke couple ) whose friendship provide a '90s-style family unit. This flick mixes together a head spinning/heart wrenching combination of queer teen angst, homophobia, AIDS, suicide, love and hope..
I really liked the parts where the the kids were just "talking" to the camera about issues and their feelings. It was so bitterly honest I just couldnt believe it. Very unusual, and touchingly rad. BRAVO! As you may remember, everday life for any teenager means crisis, loneliness, rebellion, and the search for love. Growing up gay adds another dimension to the angst and turmoil of teen life. This flick shares a rare, honest look at teenagers. They arent made out to be Clueless or given a Hollywood "treatment" to make them more glittery and sellable. This film will shock you, make you laugh and most likely make you remember the pain and desperation of being that 'alien' boy or girl who just didnt seem to fit in with barbie and ken..

Everything That Rises (1998) Review

Everything That Rises (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This made-for TV movie has many of the cliches of the modern-day western -- young family struggling to hang onto a ranch, the bank threatening to foreclose, developers buying up land to turn into "ranchettes." The difference in this case is that the writer, Mark Spragg, knows this material first-hand. He grew up on a dude ranch in northwestern Wyoming and knows the people who have lived in this part of the world all their lives. He's written about it in a fine collection of essays, "Where Rivers Change Direction," and many of the themes in that book emerge again in this very enjoyable movie.
The struggle to hang onto the ranch is a backdrop, like the breathtaking footage of Montana, to the personal story of a father and son. Dennis Quaid, who also directed, plays a very convincing rancher-cowboy, who has learned to live in the unforgiving man's world that he inherited from his own father, but who knows little how to communicate his love to his own 14-year-old son (Ryan Merriman), eager to grow up and be a man just as strong. Their relationship is prickly until the boy is injured in an accident, and the difficulties between them are aggravated by the father's concern that he's about to lose the ranch.
The link between them is the rancher's wife (Mare Winningham) and an old cowboy (Harve Presnell) who lives and works on the ranch. Each in their way try to bring boy and father together and help keep the family on the ranch. Spragg's gift for revealing character through dialogue (evident in his book) and Quaid's direction make the scenes between characters rise again and again above the preditable. It's also a pleasure to have the "bad guys" come across sympathetically -- it's painful to watch the loan officer at the bank squirm in discomfort as he has to deliver bad news, and the land developer is portrayed as a generous man making every effort to preserve another man's wounded pride.
I recommend this film to anyone interested in the modern west, especially the high plains and mountains, and the details of ranch life. It's also a fine father-son story, with moments of well-earned pathos that bring a tear to the eye. As a companion, I recommend any of Mark Spragg's books. He's a fine writer.

Big Green (1995) Review

Big Green (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's be honest. You already know the beginning, middle, and end to this movie. You know it even if you haven't watched it. Nonetheless, is an enjoyable, albeit incredibly predictable Disney sports flick. Basically, it's Little Giants with a European translation of Football.
When the film begins, an attractive, teacher named Anna Montgomery (Olivia d'Abo) arrives in a small town as a visiting teacher - sort of a teaching abroad half-year deal from England, but without the bad teeth. Anyway, she's a horrible teacher; so she decides to teach her lessons via soccer indoctrination. The kids would rather be doing something more fun, like covering themselves in Cheetos and letting birds eat off of them.
Anyway, the kids name their team after their field in a nearly-stolen-from-Mighty-Ducks concept, and the teacher gets them to play soccer. Naturally, the kids suck when they first begin to play. They're so bad it's almost as if each kid suffers from vertigo or something; they completely lack any sort of athletic ability or coordination. And, the fat, red-headed kid from Sandlot plays a goalie who is afraid of the ball (like Goldberg the goalie from Mighty Ducks), and sees opponents as ninjas, terminators, and zombies (like visions of puppyheads from Waterboy).
Soon enough, just as the sun rises, the movie follows the Disney movie sports formula. The kids that sucked start to win, lose to the best team in town inevitably coached by a jerk, the kids learn life lessons, insert goofy character (Steve Guttenberg), at least one kid on the team overcomes some sort of difficulty, and the good guys vs. bad guys finale for this genre. I'll let you guess who wins.
It's typical, easy to pick apart for a paint-by-numbers script and mediocre acting, but it's still fun enough to enjoy.

Acla's Descent into Floristella (La Discesa di Aclà a Floristella) Review

Acla's Descent into Floristella (La Discesa di Aclà a Floristella)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This film was inspired by true events. It's an unflinching exploration of social mores and disturbing sexual practices. It exposes the endless cycle of religious hypocracy and poverty that allowed it to sacrifice generations of children.
Those who toiled in the sulfur mines had no access to their wives and family for 24/6. Both men and boys shared a communal sleeping chamber where the weak were subject to the spector of sexual abuse on and off the job.
The only thing that kept this film from getting 5-stars from me was the dialogue. At times, the dialogue was stiff and it seemed as if the actors were reciting their lines. I would highly recommend this movie for viewing for those who want to understand why conditions that the film presented could exist.

Rescue Heroes - The Movie Review

Rescue Heroes - The Movie

I am so glad to have found this Rescue Heroes movie and the Rescue Heroes toys! My 4 year old son came home from daycare playing (acting out) Power Rangers, and all he was doing was wanting to kick, punch, shoot, and fight. I was desperate for an alternative which was action packed and definately still catering to boys. This is IT! He and his 5 year old sister now pretend play Rescue Heroes, and I'm much more comfortable with what they're learning. And the Rescue Heroes are great role models for real life. I'd recommend to all parents trying to reinforce non-violence, when so much coming at kids is violent.

Rescue Heroes: The Movie is easily the brawny team's most exciting and entertaining animated story to date. Talk about a bad day at the office: When a volcano in Ecuador spouts an unknown element into the atmosphere, a series of mysterious lightning storms create worldwide havoc, from avalanches in Switzerland to bursting dams in Thailand to fires in American forests. The Rescue Heroes scamper over the globe saving lives, but nothing, it seems, can avert a planetary cataclysm once these storms merge in the atmosphere. Complicating matters is an unknown illness striking team leader Billy Blazes, and a bad case of arrogance and insubordination that grounds Rocky Canyon at a critical time. "Rescue Heroes: The Movie" is far and away more visually pleasing and dramatic than episodes from the Heroes' television show. CGI animation allows more creative angles, movement, and changing backgrounds--very handy for a story spread over much of the Earth. "--Tom Keogh"

Wild America (Snap Case) (1997) Review

Wild America (Snap Case) (1997)

I think the title kind of explains it all really. Three guys going off into the wild of America, on a mission to find a cave filled with a thousand bears, although being told that they sleep alone, the boys don't believe anyone, find the cave, and have loads of adventures along the way!! Jonathan Taylor Thomas played a great part in this movie and he really narrated it well too! As I live in the UK, I was lucky enough to see it while I was in America, I'd always liked Jonathan and Devon's films, and this was another one I HAD TO HAVE!!! I would also say that this is a great film for all the family, only recently has it been released in the UK, but I bought it in America, luckily I have an international VCR. This film is way cool. I would really reccommend it.

The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993) Review

The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Elijah Wood plays Huckleberry Finn, a young boy growing up in the pre-Civil War South. Huck's father is a drunken troublemaker, and is rarely around. The boy has been taken in by two kindly old women who are trying their best to civilize him, but aren't having an easy time of it. Huck lives for freedom and adventure, and the river is constantly calling his name. His best friend is a slave named Jim (Courtney B. Vance), and the two look out for each other, more-so with every passing day. When Huck's father Pap returns for the boy one night, having heard that he's inherited a nice some of money (for those days), the boy is desperate to escape. Trapped and left alone the next day in his father's run-down cabin, Huck escapes and fakes his own "murder." He takes a boat to Jackson's Island, where no one lives and hardly anyone visits, and there he runs into his old friend Jim! The two best friends go swimming, fishing, and have a generally great time, when Jim tells Huck that he's run away and is planning to head down river and then up to the free states. After a personal struggle with the idea of playing abolitionist, a dangerous thing to do, Huck agrees to help his friend escape slavery. The two soon find themselves heading down the river, but at a faster pace than they had expected. They have discovered that Jim is wanted not only for being a runaway, but also for being Huck's "murderer." Huck and Jim have several interesting experiences throughout their journey, including getting mixed up in a tragic family feud, nearly getting caught several times, and teaming up with a pair of con artists known as the King and the Duke (played wonderfully by Jason Robards and Robbie Coltrane). It's here where they meet three lovely sisters (Anne Heche, Laura Bundy, and a young, and very cute Renee O'Connor) and decide to help the girls at their own risk, rather than go on with the cruel scam they were being forced to act out by the two conmen.
I'm soooo happy this wonderful film has come to DVD. This is a perfect film in so many respects. The casting is perfect, the camera work is gorgeous, and the spirit of adventure, friendship, drama, and fun is portrayed perfectly in every scene. True, this is not very similar to the book, Tom Sawyer isn't even mentioned. For a perfect interpretation of the book in the form of a wonderful film you need to get the version starring Patrick Day, which is only on VHS right now as far as I know. You'll want to get the 2 tape version if you can find it, rather than the edited 1 tape version. But while I love the Patrick Day version, this one is by far my favorite. It captures everything I feel a Huck film should, in a shorter, more exciting and to the point story than the book tells. True, it's been Disney-fied, but being a Disney fanatic, I don't mind at all. My feeling is they usually improve the stories they take on. This film is loaded with adventure and friendship, which is the main reason I'm such a Tom and Huck fan, and Elijah Wood really shines in the starring role. His chemistry with Courtney B. Vance is perfect! I had nearly worn my VHS out by the time this film came to DVD. The extras are nice, but there aren't THAT many. It could have delivered more in that department. But remember that this is a Disney DVD, and one they seem to have given low priority, so I'm just glad it's been released on DVD and has any extras at all. My favorite film of all time, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, was given zero extras, and Hocus Pocus, another fave, also had none if I recall correctly. Anyway, I definitely recommend this film for families, Tom and Huck fans, and just pretty much everybody! It's a perfect movie for a rainy Saturday night, baking something sweet and cuddling with someone special.

Baby Einstein - On the Go - Riding, Sailing and Soaring (2005) Review

Baby Einstein - On the Go - Riding, Sailing and Soaring (2005)
Average Reviews:

my son is 18 months old and has just been allowed to start watching the baby einstein videos--he loves neighborhood animals and world animals and asks for them daily (we watch either "ducks!" or "growls!" once a day). after a trip on an airplane over thanksgiving, we decided to get On The Go for him to mix it up a little...
there are indeed good things about this video, but these good things are also encased in bad:
1. lots of different vehicles--probably too many different ones, in fact...do we need both a 'sailBOARD' AND a 'sailBOAT' in the same segment?
2. loads of BRIGHT colors--but this video has more computer images than 'real life' puppets...the opening segment with the raccoon driving the car over the bright green CG road is a bit much and feels like something from an austin powers movie
3. the music in this video has an eerie/music box quality to parts of it--the music that accompanies the spinning wheel (which has a car, a plane, a boat and a train on it) is very mellow and tinkly and then the same tune is repeated at various times throughout the video...yes, it's a classical tune BUT it's a watered down, synthesizer version and that just doesn't cut it.
4. lots of repetition--i.e., the opening sequence features an eye-level shot of a boy riding in a toy car that's pushed by a girl...you see this same footage about 5 minutes later in the 'on the land' segment.
overall, this is a decent dvd (i'm not going to bash it for all of the frontloaded garbage that you have to fast-forward through to get to the real dvd...that's too easy--but suffice it to say it is a pain)--the train segment is great and the vehicles are pretty cool (there are tons of shots of various ones, too)...unlike Neighborhood Animals or World Animals, my son did not want to watch this one straight through--and to me, that's a good thing.
