I was execting the Best of Sesame Street but this was not. this is 3 DVDs Anniversery in music (which I kept) And then Elmo and Zoe go on an adventure with letters and numbers. I was expecting the best old skits and re-accuring muppets but it is crap. I sold them at a second had store for 2 bucks each. Sad.

Bob The Builder - Building Friendships (2001)

My 4 year old loved seeing the new episodes on this DVD. New characters (Trix, Molly) were a nice surprise.
A couple complaints though: Default language on the DVD is French! Each time we play it we have to first go into the menu to switch to English. Maybe I got the wrong version of the DVD? And there is no easy way to get right to the Bob the Builder episodes... we have to sit through the Wiggles and other preview stuff first.

What do bats, otters, badgers and a parrot have in common? They all get by with a little help form their friends--Bob and his can-do construction team! Wendy finds that Farmer Pickles' fence blocks the badgers' path to the stream, so she teams up with Bob to build a "badger gate" for them. Then Molly discovers a family of otters in the stream and comes up with a "mucky" solution to keep her new friends form being scared. Mr. Beasley provided a home for the bats in the belfry after his pigeons have flown the coop. Finally, Molly and J.J. are thrilled when Hamish the parrot needs a new home--their building yard is just the place for their new friend! Making friends and helping friends--it's all in a day's work!

Leap Frog - Math Circus Review

Leap Frog - Math Circus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unlike the previous reviewers I thought this video was great. Though it could be longer, it gives kids (mine are 4.5 and 2.5) a good introduction to basic math concepts: association, addition and subtraction.
One of the problems small children have is that they memorize numbers and can "count" but they don't associate the numbers with an actual quantity. This video uses small white mobile cubes called "quidgets" to teach them that numbers `correspond' to a certain number of objects.
My kids are pretty engrossed by this video and I am overjoyed that I can now give my four-year-old simple hand problems and she can solve them.Video Outline:
--Numbers are produced: "0 to 10".
--Numbers are associated with corresponding numbers of quidgets, coins, fingers, etc.
For example, no quidgets, then one quidget. The white box gets a number 1 which jumps onto it and stays.
Two quidgets stack vertically... the number one jumps off and the 2 jumps on and so forth.
--A song with 1 quidget, then 1 coin, then 1 finger and a 1 "digit" color worm... and so on until there are 10 quidgets, 10 coins, 10 fingers and a 10 segmented worm. The quidgets are piled vertically, and the worm grows horizontally until it is 10 units long: all numbers are shown in their worm segment.
--Then to the circus.
--Review of counting with quidgets stacking vertically.
--Using a high wire act with two swings, the quidget's do addition and then subtraction.
Two quidgets, for example, swing across and are joined by another quidget from the other swing. The numbers 2 and 1 drop off and the number 3 sticks itself to the stack of three quidgets. The reverse is done for subtraction.
--At the end, stacks of ten quidgets are flung into the ring until their are ten stacks of them demonstrating how we can go from 10 to 100 by ten's.

Animal Atlas: Animal Passport (2010) Review

Animal Atlas: Animal Passport (2010)
Average Reviews:

My 5 year old animal-loving son seemed to like this DVD well enough when we watched it for the first time, but I was annoyed to see that all the animals were filmed in zoos or wild animal parks with fences and cement barriers clearly visible in the shots. In an apparent attempt to minimize this, most of the shots were framed very tightly - head and shoulders, mostly.
The narrative contains a solid stream of facts and isn't cloying as it can be in some videos marketed to younger kids, but telling us that the lion roams the grasslands in search of prey, while we see a lion lying down in a dusty enclosure with a fence behind him was less than impressive.

Dinosaurs - Inside and Out - 4 HOURS AS SEEN ON DISCOVERY CHANNEL Review

Dinosaurs - Inside and Out - 4 HOURS AS SEEN ON DISCOVERY CHANNEL
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The "Dinosaurs Inside and Out" DVD contains four episodes: "Renaissance of the Dinosaurs," "Land of the Giants," "The Killer Elite," "And Then There Were None." The DVD might be better named "Paleontology Inside and Out" because each episode describes more about how paleontologists research dinosaurs than about the actual dinosaurs. Anyone who wants to be a paleontologist or who wonders how they work in the field and in the lab will find the DVD very worthwhile.
The first episode, "Renaissance of the Dinosaurs," gives a brief history of paleontology and describes some of the very important finds, like Jack Horner's "Egg Mountain." Research to uncover the very first Triassic dinosaurs in Argentina is covered late in the episode.
The second episode, "Land of the Giants," describes how paleontologists study the giant Sauropods of the Jurassic to estimate their weight and how much land area it tool to support the eating habits of a large Sauropod. Other paleontologists study Sauropod trackways to see how they interacted and calculate how fast they could walk.
The third episode, "The Killer Elite," describes how paleontologists find and dig up various Theropod dinosaurs like T. rex and the raptors. The legal battle and auction of "Sue" the T. rex is covered.
The fourth episode, "And Then There Were None," describes various theories about why the dinosaurs became extinct and how paleontologists are researching the extinction. The episode describes how climate change, disease and a killer asteroid could have brought about the end of the dinosaurs.
In 1998 I would have given this DVD five stars. But I bought this DVD, pre-release, from Amazon.com in May 2009 and was very disappointed to find that while the DVD is copyrighted 2009, the episodes are copyrighted 1997. I was expecting to get some of the latest information about dinosaurs but that's not going to happen with information from the last century. So, I took one star from the rating because the information, while good, is dated.
Generally, the program production quality, like the photography and narration, is very good. But there are a couple of exceptions. There are a few clips of computer generated dinosaurs that are reused in the various episodes in an attempt to show living animals. Thankfully, these clips are very short because they are very amateurish even by 1997 standards. The running T. rex is particularly laughable. If these clips were longer, I would have removed another star from the ratings.
Some of the music, like the main theme and some background music, sounds like it came off the shelf of a free electronic music library. It sounds like what you might expect to hear in a zero budget movie or porn flick. That's kind of surprising given that these episodes are Discovery Channel productions.
If you want to see how paleontologists work and aren't concerned about the latest research like dinosaur genetics, buy this DVD. But if you want more up-to-date information on dinosurs, you should buy the Discovery Channel's "Essential Dinosaur Pack."

Earth: The Biography (2008) Review

Earth: The Biography (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Is it as good as Planet Earth? No. This documentary series doesn't a never-ending overabundance of brilliant imagery. But don't let that dissuade you. If it wasn't for "Planet Earth" everyone would be raving about this set. Because though its visuals aren't always as stunning as that excellent series -- sometimes the screen shows just a guy or two talking in front of a washed out sky -- overall "Earth: The Biography" is just as interesting and at times even more informative. The special effects are good, too.
Generally, I'd say this set is great for anyone with even a passing interest in geology, at least if they're over, say, 8.
These are the same shows that recently aired on the National Geographic Channel. There are no bonus features.
Disc 1 has three shows, "Volcanoes," "Atmosphere" and "Ice." Disc 2 adds "Oceans" and "Rare Earth." Each of the first four explains how that particular system works, as well as what happens when it's messed with.
The last show examines a theory that says simple life may actually be common on other planets, but complex life -- i.e., animal life -- requires such a complex sequence of events that we'll never find another human-like population. It goes on to examine how humans are damaging the planet. Did you know each year people cut down enough forest to cover the state of South Carolina?
Everything is presented with plenty of objective, scientific information.
My favorite show is the first one, since it includes the formation of Earth. Did you know scientists think our planet once had a twin? Or that the moon is drifting away from us?
Though the narrator, Dr. Iain Stewart, speaks in a Scottish brogue, I didn't have any trouble understanding him. He's calm and articulate.
By the way, you can't help but be reminded of "Planet Earth" as you watch this. A commercial for it is actually the first thing that comes up when you pop in Disc 1.
Besides "Planet Earth," I'd recommend pairing this up with An Inconvenient Truth. Or a trip to go see Wall-E.

This landmark series uses specialist imaging and compelling narrative to tell the life story of our planet, how it works, and what makes it so special. Examining the great forces that shape the Earth - volcanoes, the ocean, the atmosphere and ice - the programme explores their central roles in our planet's story. How do these forces affect the Earth's landscape, its climate, and its history? CGI gives the audience a ringside seat at these great events, while the final episode brings together all the themes of the series and argues that Earth is an exceptionally rare kind of planet - giving us a special responsibility to look after our unique world. This is a series that shows the Earth in new and surprising ways. Extensive use of satellite imagery reveals new views of our planet, while timelapse filmed over many months brings the planet to life. Offering a balance between dramatic visuals and illuminating facts, this ground-breaking series makes global science truly compelling.

Prehistoric Planet - The Complete Dino Dynasty (2002) Review

Prehistoric Planet - The Complete Dino Dynasty (2002)

Ignore the reviews bashing this program for recycling footage from the BBC Walking With series. Of course it's recycled, that is EXACTLY what the package says! It was reworked into a Saturday morning show for a younger audience. And it succeeds wonderfully at reaching that target audience. This show is great for young kids, about 3-8 years old. Hopefully, they will be able to eventually also enjoy the more academic original series of programs. But these are more accessible and I am thrilled to have them be preferred viewing over many of the other programming available on TV. Definitely, if you have a young paleontologist on your shopping list, this is a must!

The BBC's award-winning Walking With Dinosaurs is now available in an all-new, kid-friendly format: Prehistoric Planet: Dino Dynasty I! The same breathtaking CGI and state-of-the-art digital effects that wowed millions has been given an incredible make-over with all-new music, educational fact files, and a younger, hipper voiceover by actor Ben Stiller. But the star of the show remains the totally lifelike, utterly amazing dinosaurs themselves -- great lumbering giants such as Diplodocus and Stegosaurus, fearsome predators like Allosaurus and T-Rex, all brought to life so realistically, you'll believe we sent our camera crews back in time. Prehistoric Planet: Dino Dynasty I is a wild, truly awesome journey into the ancient past that will leave your kids so awe-struck, they won't even realize they're learning!

WordWorld: Lots of Letters Box Set Review

WordWorld: Lots of Letters Box Set

I cannot say enough about this show. It is one of the most imaginative, fun and educational shows out there. My son is a letter hound and is in love with this show (27 months)I think if any child is going to watch any tv it should be this show over almost any other. The only reason I put a four on this review is to draw attention to possible duplicates if you already have other videos. I am guessing that this is because Lots of Letters is a compilation set of all of their videos. With that in mind you should expect to see some that are on other disks. Kind of like a best of. If you are trying to budget what you spend you should know what is on other videos. If you are only going to buy one Lots of Letters is the one. The best bang for your buck. Then by the Christmas, Valentines Day, and Halloween disks. They are very cute. I did not know what was on the box set since I was new to Word World so I bought more than I would have if I had known.
IF you by this box set you might not want to buy Sheep's A Start. Three of the four videos on Sheep's A Star are in this box set. The Birds, W Drought, Chef Sheep. The only one no in the box set is Princess Sheep off that video.Three of the four videos on Flying Ant are in this box set: Flying Ant,Catch that C and Play Ball. The one that is not on the video is Shuffleword. So again, If you already have Lots of Letters it might not be worth the purchase for that one extra show.
Welcome to world word has two shows that are in the box set Lots of Letters: Happy Birthday Dog and The Mystery of the Disappearing Pie.
Once again, this is one of the most amazing shows I have ever made for kids. My son fell in love with it so if you have a little one that is just in love with letters or a child that struggles...this is for you. The holiday shows are great for kids when you want to treat then to a show but want it to be educational.

My three year old son loves Dinosaur Train, as do I. The DVD is a great thing, and sneaks in lots of good lessons. But we miss Dr. Scott ! In the broadcast show, every DT story is capped by a one minute or so presentation by a real paleontologist who greatly adds to the educational value, and believability of the show. We want Dr. Scott back !
And to the previous reviewer, I think the reason the shows seem short is that normally two would run in a half hour show plus the Dr. Scott sections. But there certainly is a "Play all" function - we've used it several times.

Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days (2009) Review

Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD set was nostalgic and at times almost brought tears to my eyes. For those parts (The ladybug picnic, The pinball counting to 12, the cartoon typewriter, the cast iron "I", etc) I would give it ten stars. Sesame Street literally shaped my life as a young child. I watched it religously until age seven (I'm thirty-five now). The reason for my three star rating is because of the lengthy songs and dull skits, which unfortunately took most of the time. Leena Horne singing didn't do it for me at five and she especially doesn't do it for me now at thrity-five. Sorry, but same to you Diana Ross. I wanted to see more of the aliens ("yep, yep, yep...nope, nope, nope"), Bert and Ernie, Super Grover, and the Tiddly-winks (who were suspiciously absent).
Watching this DVD made me realize how they should now call Sesame Street, just plain Elmo's World. That's who it's really all about now anyway. I loved the good old days when ALL the characters received equal billing. Now it seems like the first forty minutes of Sesame Street is just filler until Elmo, the big star, shows up. Don't get me wrong, I like Elmo, and so do my three little ones, but all the other characters have their own personalities and ability to teach as well. This DVD is a reminder of that.
So CTW if you're reading this, I would buy every single episode of Sesame Street from 1974-79 if you put it out on DVD. Stop teasing us with these short DVD releases showing only clips. To those of you who are thinking of purchasing this DVD set, I would get it, it is worth it. You're sure to see something that will bring back a memory.

Baby Einstein - Baby Galileo - Discovering the Sky (2003) Review

Baby Einstein - Baby Galileo - Discovering the Sky (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't quite understand what is so horrible about Baby Galileo. Reviewers are saying how aweful it was, but are giving no explanation as to why, so I'm going to explain why it worked for me and my child.
I was extremely pleased with the Baby Galileo video. My daughter is three and a half years old and soaks in anything she sees. Although she is on the older end of the suggested ages for these videos, she still is learning from them and enjoying them. This video was a great way for her to learn the general ideas about the sky. The video opens with puppets, which are a trademark in Julie Clark's videos. There are narrations by children, and 15 different pieces of classical music ranging from Claire De Lune to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. There are several chapters in the video introducing a new concept- those being the sky, the sun, the clouds, the stars, the moon, the planets, the galaxy and space. There are real pictures and video of the sun, moon and others while they are supplemented with toys, graphics and music that go along with the sky/space theme.
I am an early childhood educator, and I see these videos as being some of the most developmentally appropriate videos out there for children to watch. The video expresses many subjects, textures, colors and most of all, beautiful classical music to soothe your child and spark their interest and attention. I'm not quite sure why these videos haven't worked for other parents, but they've been successful in my family and many others that I know. I highly recommend the Baby Einstein collection- at least try them, especially Baby Galileo.

LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy Review

LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The reviews for the other math Leapfrog videos (Math Circus, Math Adventure to the Moon) were mixed so I decided to give this one a try the day it came out and I am glad I did. This DVD is ideal for toddlers and preschoolers who are learning to count and recognize numbers. My daughter (who recently turned 2) was having a hard time learning 13-20 and this DVD helped her a lot--in just a week she has gone from mixing up all of the "teens" to reliably counting to 20. It also introduces the concept of 0 and early math skills like relative size and estimating (small/medium/large) and that when you have two groups of 10 it all adds up to 20 when you count it out.
The DVD extras were great for this title too. It has all 4 songs available as stand alone sing-alongs which is great because your child hears the number, sees it counted out, sees the numeral in the background, and sees the numbers and words to the song spelled out at the bottom of the screen. It also includes an extra song sung by Scout the Puppy, two cute read-along sing-along vowel shorts (short a and short i) and a great song about rhyming from Alphabet Amusement Park.
I strongly disagree with the review that said this video was up to par with other leapfrog videos. My daughter likes it just as much as the Letter and Word Factory DVDs. I don't think it's the MOST upbeat Leapfrog title but it is fun and the songs are great. She loves the Fish Counting song and sings it all the time now. The story and songs are also interesting enough that I think even a more advanced preschooler who can already count to 20 would still enjoy watching it, especially with a younger sibling or friend.
