"Barney's Musical Scrapbook" is a show full of segments of "Barney & Friends" episodes from the 1995 season. It includes the characters: Barney, Baby Bop, BJ, Shawn, Tosha, Jason, Kathy, Juan, Carlos, Min, Kenneth, and Julie. The segments are from the "Barney & Friends" episodes: "Shawn and the Beanstalk," "Up we go!," "It's raining, it's pouring...," "Ship, Ahoy!," and "Shopping for a Surprise." It is approximately 50 minutes long and has 16 songs. This show is not a song's tape, but it is a very good show!

My 2-yr old son watches this video more than Shrek! The tunes are easy for him to remember and dance to. From Twinkle Little Star to Grandpa's Farm, he just can't seem to get enough of it. I just need to get another before this one breaks.

We were very disappointed with this Bob the Builder dvd. My children love Bob the Builder and own every video. We were excited to hear that a new one was coming out soon (especially on Dvd). However, it is not new! Every episode on this dvd is on the other videos (or has been on the Nick Jr. show at least 6 months ago). I would have never thought they would release a new dvd/video without any new episodes. If this is your first Bob the Builder dvd/video, then I would recommend it. If you own many others, then don't bother getting this one because you have already seen it.

My 4 year old loved seeing the new episodes on this DVD. New characters (Trix, Molly) were a nice surprise.
A couple complaints though: Default language on the DVD is French! Each time we play it we have to first go into the menu to switch to English. Maybe I got the wrong version of the DVD? And there is no easy way to get right to the Bob the Builder episodes... we have to sit through the Wiggles and other preview stuff first.

What do bats, otters, badgers and a parrot have in common? They all get by with a little help form their friends--Bob and his can-do construction team! Wendy finds that Farmer Pickles' fence blocks the badgers' path to the stream, so she teams up with Bob to build a "badger gate" for them. Then Molly discovers a family of otters in the stream and comes up with a "mucky" solution to keep her new friends form being scared. Mr. Beasley provided a home for the bats in the belfry after his pigeons have flown the coop. Finally, Molly and J.J. are thrilled when Hamish the parrot needs a new home--their building yard is just the place for their new friend! Making friends and helping friends--it's all in a day's work!

Barney - Barney in Concert Review

Barney - Barney in Concert

My 20 month-old son was not a Barney fan until he was given this video as a gift. Unlike the Barney series on television, and the other videotaped Barney "concerts" (which are simply the television show on stage), this video is less a series of production numbers and dialogue, and more of an audience sing-along which encourages lots of at-home audience participation. Many of the songs will be familiar to most parents, allowing you to sing and interact with your child while he watches. Additionally, the more informal presentation of material is far more engaging than the other, more staged Barney videos, encouraging real participation as opposed to passive television watching. Lastly, this video combines education with entertainment, such as the alphabet sung in English, Hebrew and French by young audience members. A great way to have fun time with your child--or to give yourself 40 minutes to shower!

I just bought this, and I am working my way through the set.
Haneke's brilliance and orginality are overwhelming. I especially like the way his movies are not your typical Hollywood neatly wrapped up endings. He forces moviegoers to do something rare: analyze, interpret and think!
So happy I bought this set.
Until a few months ago, I had only seen Funny Games, the American version. After having been captivated by White Ribbon, I have decided to see as many of his movies as I can. They all have a unique message and meaning.
One of the most impressive directors in our time!

THE CASTLE - Michael Haneke s film of Franz Kafka s The Castle pairs one of the most influential voices in 20th century literature with one of the most visionary filmmakers of the new millennium. A film as complex, vivid, and intriguing (New York Times) as Orson Welles The Trial, The Castle is both an ingenious, perversely faithful interpretation of the master of alienation s novel. A land surveyor identified simply as K is summoned to a remote mountain village by the local government, known as (and housed in) the castle. Unable to convince underlings of the legitimacy of his position, he tries to take his case to castle officials. THE PIANO TEACHER - Winner of three major awards at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, the film features a tour-de-force performance by Isabelle Huppert as Erika Kohut, a sexually repressed music professor who becomes obsessed with one of her young students (Benoit Magimel). One of the most shocking portaits of sadomasochism in film history. FUNNY GAMES - The summer home of a vacationing couple and their son is infiltrated by a seemingly urbane pair of men who proceed to hold the family hostage and initiate a series of violent and diabolically sadistic games. In his characteristic style, director Haneke leaves most of the bloodshed to the viewer s unbounded imagination, making this film a more harrowing experience than any splatter film. CODE UNKNOWN - On a bustling Paris street corner, four separate lives intersect, setting in motion a stunning film by acclaimed filmmaker Michael Haneke (The Piano Teacher, Funny Games). Interweaving the stories of an actress (Juliette Binoche), her journalist boyfriend and an illegal immigrant, the film crafts a compelling portrait of life in a fractured, lonely world. BENNY S VIDEO - The bored 14 year old son of an affluent Viennese family escapes from his mundane life into the titillating solitude of his video-equipped bedroom, where he re-lives a number of shockingly violent acts on playback. Without lapsing into didacticism or waiving his own complicity, Haneke makes one of the cinema s most powerful investigations into the nature of our mediated world and the seemingly insatiable human appetite for bloody spectacle. THE SEVENTH CONTINENT - With no explanation, young Eva Schober pretends to lose her eyesight and soon after, her blasé middle class Austrian family begins to unravel. In Haneke s feature film debut, all of the acclaimed director s signature elements are already visible: an unflinching eye towards modern alienation in the mode of Bresson and Antonioni; a challenging, elliptical narrative style; and an unsettlingly anti-psychological approach into the darkest hallways of human behavior. 71 FRAGMENTS OF A CHRONOLOGY OF CHANCE - Following a savage Christmas Eve killing spree by a university student, a series of disjointed vignettes leading up to the massacre unfold like a puzzle one which leaves many questions unanswered even when completed.

Hot Wheels Acceleracers, Vol. 2 - The Speed of Silence (2005) Review

Hot Wheels Acceleracers, Vol. 2 - The Speed of Silence (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The story of Vert Wheeler and his racing friends that began in "Hot Wheels World Race" and "Hot Wheels Acceleracers: Ignition" continues here.
"Vert" Wheeler and the rest of the Teku racing team must work with their rivals the Metal Maniacs to drive in the "Racing Realms", other dimensional race tracks that test a driver's racing skills to their extreme limit. Whoever reaches the finish line of each realm first receives an "Accelercharger", which grants the user's vehicle a special power (frictionless driving, hyperspeed, etc). Scattered throughout the realms are "Hyperpods", which the driver's car can attach to give it special abilities as well.
Unfortunately, the evil Gelorum has obtained the Wheel Of Power (see the Hot Wheels World Race DVD) and her robots will stop at nothing to obtain all the Accelerchargers!! If they do, they will be able to take over the world, which is NOT a good thing for us humans!
Not only that, but a mysterious THIRD racing team, the Silencerz, have shown up! Who (and what) are they, and are they on the side of good or evil?
This episode does a great job of propelling the main storyline, as well as moving along several subplots. It's always fun to watch adventures with the Hot Wheels drivers as they take on Gelorum and her drones on fantastic race tracks.
A lot of the reservations I had about the Hot Wheels Acceleracers : Ignition release are not as strong here.
- The Teku and Metal Maniacs now appear more as rival racing teams (which they should have been anyway) as opposed to rival street racing gangs.
- The physical violence content has been reduced as well. There's nothing on this disc that resembles the opening sequence of the Ignition DVD when Dr Tezla was attacked by the drones.
My children enjoy this DVD, and look forward to future Hot Wheels Acceleracers DVDs.
The Cartoon Network has already broadcast the third part of the Hot Wheels Accceleracers saga, Breaking Point, and will be airing the fourth episode "Hot Wheels Accceleracers: The Ultimate Race" on October 1st of 2005. If you missed part 3, they usually rebroadcast them the day before the new episode, so look for it on Friday, September 30, 2005.
This DVD comes with 6 micro-episodes, that contain racing and plot elements in realms not shown in the main movie (the Cliffside Realm and the Ice Realm).
Check out my reviews of the Hot Wheels World Race and Hot Wheels Acceleracers: Ignition DVDs for more information on those titles.

Even the witty title and excellent cover art will have Ed heads slaverying like unsuspecting victims of Eddy's latest scam; it's the un mistakeable Antonucci magic. Volume One contains six Ed-ventures: Sir Ed-a-Lot; Who, What, Where, Ed; Avast Ye Eds; Know-It All Ed; Mirror, Mirror, on the Ed; Hot-Buttered Ed. Plus--get ready-- you get a bonus 'toon of Billy, Mandy and Grim, Nursery Crimes. Throw water on anyone who's fainted because there's still more to come. The Plank video! "My Best Friend Plank" the friendly update of Harry Nilson's theme from "The Courtship of Eddy's Father." Get it, Eddy's father! How many injokes are in this show anyway? Could it be better? Sure-- how about all of season one together in a Golden Collection like the Jetsons and the Flintstones? Is Cartoon Network testing the waters, like they think it won't sell? C'mon! Have you ever seen Ed, Edd and Eddy? The character designs? The background graphics? The witty writing and clever dialogue? This is one cartoon I'm waiting for Warners to merchandise: I want my supersoaker to look like a Canadian squirtgun. I want to own crazy low tech gadgets from double D's fertile brain. AKA Cartoon must be a pretty fun place to work because laughter comes easy in this good-natured cartoon, which tops my most-watched 'toons list (check out the interview with Danny A. at alivingdog.com). So when do the Eds get the star treatment? Sure I bought this single DVD--any Eds is good Eds, but as with ReBoot, Pinky and the Brain and The Alvin Show, I'm eagerly awaiting the boxed set.

Beat the Intro - The Ultimate Music Trivia DVD Game (2006) Review

Beat the Intro - The Ultimate Music Trivia DVD Game (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Beat The Intro is a fun DVD music trivia game that arrives in stores this October 24th. The single disc game includes over 3,000 questions. The questions are based on song openings, lyrics and pictures from songs and bands of the last 50 years.
The game play is fairly easy, you really don't even need to read the instructions unless you want to. It is a game that you will need your DVD remote to play. I found it much easier to play this game with my computer and a wireless external mouse. Pointing the DVD remote at the TV so much became a drag but playing the game with the mouse on the computer was a blast.
There are two main formats, a quick draw segment and a head to head format for multi-players. In the quick draw segment, you are given the opportunity to answer six questions from the decade of your choice or random. If you get one question wrong you lose--just that simple.
In the head to head format, you choose the number of players. Then you choose the decade. I believe the decades are 50s/60s, 70's, 80's and 90's/00s. I particularly played the 80s decade. In the head to head, after choosing the decade you are given a intro question about a musical artist. After choosing the correct intro, you are given various trivia questions about the artist. The winner of the head to head is whoever scores the most points.
The artists included in the game are fairly well known. I only played the 80s and the 90s/00's decades. Artists that came up in 15 minutes of game play included ABC, Katrina and the Waves, The Cars, Soft Cell, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, A-Ha, Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Sheena Easton, The Clash, Madonna, and John Mayer to name a few.
The downside is I don't know if this is a fact that will be argued, it seems like several of the intros were re-recorded and sound slightly different than the original songs. I am fairly familiar with the Beyonce song "My Myself, and I," and the A-Ha song "Take On Me," and they sounded slightly different to me, it could have just been me.
It's a fun game. Game play is too quick though. There is no way to lengthen the game play. The quick draw is only six questions and it's over. A head to head game with two players can last 5-7 minutes or less.
It's a fun game though.

Super Mario World: Koopa's Stone Age Quests Review

Super Mario World: Koopa's Stone Age Quests
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like to describe the cartoons Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World as a set of scales, completely mirrored, in which one scale is always rock bottom. Super Mario World does some things right that Super Mario 3 did wrong - Koopa properly evil, no real world crossovers. This time there's no crossing over to the real world, thank god, something that really made Super Mario 3 suck. But everything Super Mario 3 did right, Super Mario World does wrong. Nonsensical premise... And yet some of the worst things Super Mario 3 did remain; the annoying Koopalings, the audio-torture music etc. In some ways, Super Mario World manages to be even worse thanks to those stupid cave people, especially the insufferable Oogtar.
The main Achilles heel of this cartoon series is the stupidity of the premise. It's Dinosaur World, which works fine in the game, but for some reason somebody had the bright idea that dinosaurs equals cave people. Instead of Dinosaur World, it becomes the Stone Age. This makes the whole premise just putrid. Those cave people are horrible and completely drag everything down. Peach feels responsible for them, which probably means I should file my letter of complaint to her.
The very best thing about Super Mario World is, you guessed it, King Koopa. He's much better here than in the Super Mario 3 cartoon. Here, he gets to be his evil self again without being overdependent on his kids. In fact, there are many times, here, when they are submissive to him. He has a lot of nefarious schemes like getting everyone hooked on spruced-up snacks ("King Scoopa Koopa") and even pay-per-view television ("Rock TV"). He's definitely the shining star. When he appears, that is.
A mixed blessing comes in the form of Yoshi, a little kid trapped in a dinosaur's body. You would think he could easily be irritating, but he's actually loveable and you root for him.
The worst thing about the ensemble is that the main cast really are kept in the background. They hardly ever save the day - that virtue is mostly handed to Yoshi. When Koopa's rock tv has everyone zombified, it's Yoshi that stands up and saves the day. God forbid, sometimes it's the horrible, horrible cave boy Oogtar who's the hero. The princess spends more time parenting those two than doing anything in character with her role - apart from managing to be a damsel in distress for once. Not once did Koopa kidnap her in Super Mario Bros 3 (and here I thought that's what he enjoys best), so that's good. But Mario saving her? Nope, that would rob "Yoshi the Superstar" of his title, now wouldn't it?
Super Mario World is not totally horrible. King Koopa is the saving grace of the show, and properly so, unlike in Super Mario Bros 3. His evil schemes and overwhelming personality keep this ship from sinking. Harvey Atkin has to be commended for believing in the character enough to stick with it till the bitter end. Koopa's animators also deserve an applause; once again, he's the most engaging character visually as well as characteristically. Some of the episodes are worth a peek, some are not, all thanks to him. You could do worse than take a chance with this one, but probably only the smallest kiddies can watch this and not feel just a little judgemental. This set does feature the series' best episodes (nudging the rating up) so if you've gotta buy a Super Mario World DVD, make it this one.
RATING: 2.5/5

Barbie in a Mermaid Tale (2010) Review

Barbie in a Mermaid Tale (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our three and a half year old daughter wanted to see this movie after seeing a preview on the Nick Jr website. The only other Barbie movie we have watched was the Nutcracker, and while it was a cute movie with beautiful ballet sequences, it had too many scary parts for her. We watched A Mermaid's Tale tonight as a special treat after a particularly traumatic day involving blood testing for allergies. I was pleasantly surprised in this movie. The animation is fantastic, beautiful and lifelike. The characters are sweet. And the story line (you must realize we are talking it's for small children who love Barbie and fantasy) is easy to follow and fun. My daughter loved it. The "scary" parts weren't too scary, some sharks, a few jelly fish, and the mean Queen. And while she is mean, it's nothing like the Queen in Sleeping Beauty that can give very young children nightmares for weeks. The movie's message is that it is okay to be different. We are very particular about what we let our daughter watch. She watches Max and Ruby, the Wonder Pets, The Berenstain Bears, Little Bear, Olivia and occasionally Maggie and the Ferocious Beast. She has seen the Tinkerbell movies, but didn't enjoy the other Disney movies, as the bad guys are always too scary. She doesn't see any network TV or commercials in general. She saw the commercial for this on the Nick Jr website, and only after we had watched it first. My husband and I especially appreciated the fact that there weren't references to things she wouldn't understand, there weren't jokes thrown in for the adults only, and that is was sweet and simple with no violence, no name calling and nothing offensive. I would gladly watch it again with her, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a parent who was looking for a sweet, fun movie for little girls who love pretend and make-believe and believe it's possible Mermaids are really out there in the ocean somewhere.
