Monster (2007) Review

I think Ed Wood spent more money on Plan 9 From Outer Space. Probably the most expensive part of this movie was the flight to Tokyo.
I absolutely hate the herky-jerky camera and I wasn't kidding about the title of this review as it really did give me a headache. After the first few minutes, I kept wondering when they'd go to a regular steady camera, but it never happened. The next thing I know, a half hour went by and by then I just didn't have the energy to get up and hit the eject button. It was like driving by a car wreck where you just can't stop looking. As I sat there, I kept hoping something would happen to redeem the awful acting and story movement, but it stayed consistently annoying to the end.
The icky bug is almost non-existent. You hear a little roar once in a while, and see the odd octopus arm flash in the background. The art on the DVD box is highly misleading as you NEVER see the monster in as much detail as in that painting.
I can't give it no stars because the rating system would not allow it. I would have given it one star for originality, but wait... Blair Witch???
Save your money and your time. Oh, and one other thing... if you liked this type of hand-held filming, you'll love Cloverfield. I'll pass.

Bloodthirst: Legend of the Chupacabras (2003) Review

Bloodthirst: Legend of the Chupacabras (2003)

If you have seen any of J. R. Bookwalter's early "Ohio" films (e.g. "Chickboxer,") you know about low-budget filmmaking. The Bookwalter films are not very good even by his own standards, but stand the test of time as amusing cheese. Bookwalter has nothing on Jonathan Mumm, creator of "Bloodthirst" for Z-grade filmmaking on a miniscule budget. The big difference is that Bookwalter's films are amusing as camp, where "Bloodthirst" is a patently trying experience. I have rated it two stars for two reasons: first, I like to encourage independent filmmakers; second, there are several wholly unintentional moments of hilarity to be found here.
The production, acting, sound, and image quality are incredibly amateurish, and it really is like watching a home video. The film revolves around the existence of a chupacabra in an old mine, and the subplots run all over the place, trampling the movie into submission: there's a murder (and vampiritic resurrection,) the lamest bar fight ever, the stupidest newspaper journalism subplot in recent memory, a vampire who looks like a fratboy on a bender, and even a crazy witch called "The Mago," who claims that the chupacabra is a hungry pet left on Earth by space aliens! Beyond that, I can't really tell you much about the plot as it makes next to no sense whatsoever. My favorite diversion in the drunkenly-reeling storyline was when a group of investigators (including two reporters) decide to go after the chupacabra, who by all accounts lives in a cave, which may or may not be a gold mine, too: I was a bit unclear on what parts of the story were legendary and which are not within the framework of the film. What better vehicle, then, to hunt for the goat sucker but in a World War Two DUKW amphibious vehicle? Yes, they went via a lake on the "Duck Tour" of the chupacabra's home turf, all of which is tenuously related to the mayor's reelection campaign. (Somehow.)
Another motif in the film is that of walking. Mumm shows us seemingly endless shots of people walking all over creation (mostly in the woods.) It may sound boring, but wait until you see it! Eventually there is a convergence of moronic subplots on a rocky outcropping. The Mago (Lenore Sebastian) reveals that she actually is the chupacabra, and a horrifying battle for survival (which includes the least credible hypnosis subplot I can recall) ensues.
This is a terrible movie in every way. If you want serious B-movie pain, this is for you. Thank goodness there's no "Bloodthirst 2." What's that you say? Oh that's right, there is. I watched them back to back in one night. The one takeaway is this: as bad as "Bloodthirst" is, "Bloodthirst 2" is even worse. Believe it or not.

MAVERICK ENTERTAINMENT has really improved their special effects of late. Unfortunately, the rest of the parts of their "films" continue to be worse than what you see high school students produce. In this "epic", a crew of 7 (the unshaven captain, his ex-wife the doctor, a Sulu wannabee, his wannabee girl friend, Wolfman Jack the Klingon, some armed Klingon psycho who keeps shooting up the ship, and some bald white guy who only shows up on the ship when the other 6 are busy elsewhere) pilot a thousand foot long space ship on a trip to contact the living oil well that controls all life. After they do this, they have a cliff-hanger ending. Just so the audience gets what's going on, STAR TREK lettering is used for all of the credits. Obvioudly the start of a franchise..

Explotation Cinema: Satan's Slave / Terror Review

Explotation Cinema: Satan's Slave / Terror
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This double-feature DVD includes two 1970s exploitation flicks from British director Norman J. Warren: SATAN'S SLAVE (1976) and TERROR (1978). Both films were penned by David McGillivray, who also scripted two excellent films--HOUSE OF WHIPCORD (1974) and FRIGHTMARE (1974)--from the better-known director of British horror and exploitation, Pete Walker.
SATAN'S SLAVE, the weaker of these two films, stars beautiful Candace Glendenning as a young woman who is the descendant of a powerful and evil witch. After her parents are killed in a suspicious accident, she goes to live with an uncle and his son, and soon after she discovers that her relatives plan to sacrifice her during a ritual that will resurrect her infamous ancestor.
While the acting is okay and the directing adequate, the script for SATAN'S SLAVE is rather uneven and the plot is overly convoluted and hard to follow. As an exploitation horror flick, however, this film delivers the goods with plenty of gratuitous nudity and numerous gore shots that include a smashed head, a bloody suicide, and a gruesome eyeball stabbing.
The second film, TERROR, is the actual highlight of this double feature. It opens as a mob of medieval villagers capture a fleeing witch and attempt to burn her at the stake. The witch calls upon satanic forces to rescue her from her the flames, and as she escapes, she places a curse upon the descendants of the noblewoman who incited the villagers to rise up against her. This entire scene is then revealed to be the ending of a horror film, and the filmmaker claims that the story is based upon true events from his own family history. He and his female cousin, he says, are the last descendants of the noblewoman whose family was cursed by the witch. Naturally, there is skepticism among the audience for whom he has just screened the film. But at a wrap party later that evening, the filmmaker's cousin falls into a trance and attacks him with a sword...and he and his cousin begin to worry that the family curse just might be real after all.
Like the other film on this DVD, TERROR has a fair amount of female nudity--the stripper in the nightclub scene is especially eye-popping--and lots of outré gore. But this film also has a logical, comprehensible story line that is bolstered by strong performances and able directing, and the exceptional production design and cinematography create an ambiance that is exponentially eerier than that of SATAN'S SLAVE. Indeed, hardcore horror fans will recognize the distinct influence of giallo master Dario Argento on this film, especially in regards to atmosphere and gore.
This double-feature DVD offers both films at their original theatrical aspect ratios (enhanced for 16x9 TVs), and though the prints used for the transfers aren't in perfect condition, the images are very good and the soundtracks are fairly crisp and clear. Bonus materials on the DVD include a handful of trailers for other 1970s-era grindhouse and exploitation films, as well as a "grindhouse experience" option that allows you to watch both films back-to-back with concession-stand adverts and trailers inserted therein. It's almost like being in one of Manhattan's 42nd Street theaters back in the grindhouse heyday.

Aliens Gone Wild Review

Aliens Gone Wild
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Aliens Gone Wild" is a piece of recorded entertainment that I can't in good conscience call a movie, as it's essentially a bunch of clips from bad Full Moon films cobbled together on one DVD with the most laughable editing in recent memory. It is probably the worst thing Charles Band, maker of over 200 (frequently awful) films, has ever been associated with, and is that rare production where the independently bad components are spliced together into a finished product that is substantially worse than the individual parts. A collection of simple science fiction or horror trailers would have been much more entertaining (don't worry though, there are actual trailers in the extras, along with some other stuff of dubious entertainment value.)
The DVD is broken down into major categories like "Space Freaks," "Alien Classics," and "From Beyond." Each group has low points, but for me the worst was the almost unendurable music video sequence in a hospital early in the film. If you make it through that it gets easier from there, and even includes some footage of a young Demi Moore, who gets star billing along with other luminaries like Julie Newmar, James Black, and Roddy McDowell. Of course there really isn't any one person at the top of the bill as it's just a bunch of footage from other movies mashed together, but at least there are some people you have seen before.
This is one of the most difficult things to tolerate that I have ever watched, and I was sorely tempted on numerous occasions just to stop the DVD and run over it with a car. Now that I've actually seen the whole thing I realize that those instincts were valid.
"Aliens Gone Wild" is among the very worst of the worst.

Lady Ninja Kasumi, Vol. 1 (2005) Review

Lady Ninja Kasumi, Vol. 1 (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Take a look at the box cover. That is pretty much all you really need to know about "Lady Ninja Kasumi" ("Sanada Kunoichi Ninpo-den: Kasumi") and whether or not it is the kind of thing you are interested in. It is exactly what you are expecting, a B-movie Pink Film with a lady ninja-theme. The company that puts out this series is called Junk Films, and they have produced such other classics as "Death Penalty Female Prisoner Saori". And there you have it.
Oh, there is a story. Poor Kasumi and her little brother are orphaned, but taken in by a local warlord. Kasumi joins the kunoichi, the lady ninjas, in order to work and protect her little bother. There are some spies and intrigues, and some entirely unspectacular fight scenes. The costumes are nice, but the whole thing has a feel of being shot on digital video, and you know that this is not a high-budget production. The film is based on an erotic manga series, but I have never read that so don't know how well it holds up. Director Hiroyuki Kawasaki normally makes anime flicks like "Mouse" and "Sakura Wars", so this may have been his first time with live actors.
But if you are getting this, you are really getting it for the lovely Yonmi, not for the story. She looks great in her ninja costumes, and is appropriately bouncy for the genre. Being a Pink Film, the nudity is strictly T&A the three sex scenes are of the softcore variety. Not anywhere near a great film, but then you weren't expecting that. For what it is, it does a good job. The girls are pretty, the plot is decent, and there are far worse entries in the genre.

Category 7: The End of the World (2010) Review

Category 7: The End of the World (2010)
Average Reviews:

I've always been open to watching these disaster movies. Volcano, Twister, Day of Tomorrow ... all good films in their own right, despite what the movie critics say about them.
Category 7: End of the World was a very entertaining movie. I think too many entertainment fans spend too much time over-analyzing movies that are made by the entertainment industry instead of enjoying it for what it is, quality entertainment. While I haven't seen the previous film, Category 6, I plan on purchasing the movie to see how this series started.
While it's not too impossible to believe, such events as what is seen in this film could very well become true. With the rising cost of oil and the fact that the greenhouse effect and global warming are impacting our enviropnment, this movie does have a very moral lesson to show anyone who watches this movie. We must protect our environment before it starts to react to our presence on this world.
It was refreshing to see Shannon Doherty and her authentic talent coming to the surface. She had been released from Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed because of her attitude with producers and directors but it was refreshing to see her performing true to her nature and having a role that was written just for her. She is a wonderful actress and it's time more and more roles were written specifically for her. Randy Quaid is also the consummate actor who always seems to manage to steal every scene he's in.
But, I was disapponted that the US Government and the politicians that are portrayed in this movie seem content in facing the ultimate destruction of Mother Nature and protecting the interests of the large corporations, oil cartels and special interests instead of safeguarding the lives of the people. It shows a lack of original thinking on the part of the writers, who should have gone to a few more creative writing courses before sitting down to write this movie. In addition, I felt that this movie was a little longer than it should have been. Hopefully, there'll be a little more of a waiting period before we see Category 8, which will be coming our way faster than we can turn off the power.

NEW ON BLU-RAYCATEGORY 7: THE END OF THE WORLDAs a deadly Category 6 storm descends upon the Earth, unleashing violent winds, hurricane force pressure, and devastating tornadoes, officials scramble to pinpoint the cause. Though global warming is suspect, beautiful but discredited scientist Faith Clavell (Shannen Doherty, Mallrats, TV's Charmed) realizes that something else is triggering the extreme weather. Teaming up with storm chaser Tommy Tornado (Emmy nominee Randy Quaid, Brokeback Mountain, Elvis) and Judith Carr (Gina Gershon, Sinatra, Face/Off), head of FEMA, Faith realizes they must enter the storm itself if they hope to stop it. While the country is at its most vulnerable, the government becomes aware that it is the target of a terrorist organization. ...it does. Worse and worse and worse. It's like these guys are trying to see how bad they can be: special effects out of a bottle of catsup, actors straight out of a failed acting class, and writing that couldn't be worse if they just ad-libbed. The four stars must come from the movie's producer. Please don't waste your time or money. Maybe they'll finally be forced to quit making this crap.

Drive-In Cult Classics, Vol. 3 (2010)

VAN NUYS BLVD.
The best of this bunch, especially if you've ever actually been to Van Nuys, and the theme song is hilarious. It's mostly just a loose collection of scenes, very few of which have anything to do with cruising or Van Nuys Boulevard. It's really more of a California fantasy lifestyle teen flick than anything else, loosely based on car culture, sex in vans, the beach, etc. Director's commentary is only occasionally interesting but at least there is one. Some lame-brain comedic scenarios, a lot of toplessness, and one scene that would be right at home in American Pie. But in spite of product claims to the contrary, Bobby does not 'get involved with topless dancers and bikers'. There is dancing, there is toplessness, there are bikers of a sort, but that's not the same thing.
THE POM POM GIRLS
A fun dumb high school flick that isn't really about the Pom Pom Girls. It's mainly about rebellious football dudes (who are remarkably non-jock types) playing outrageous pranks on each other and their rival high school. Loose, freewheeling, unencumbered by plot, but enjoyable.
THE BABYSITTER
The only black-and-white movie in this bunch and a pretty solid b-movie that balances the legitimate acting of George E. Carey against the guilty pleasures of gratuitous sex, bikers, lesbians, psychedelic bands, etc. But who wrote the synopsis on the DVD package? Were they high, or did they write it two weeks after seeing it and confuse the details? Candy does not "take a job working for the powerful district attorney" - she has an affair with a prosecutor who works for the DA. Candy also does not "step in and blackmail the D.A." - she tries to stop a biker chick from blackmailing George, the prosecutor. Get your story straight, man!
BLOOD MANIA
Another fine example of exaggerated titling and bunko synopsis writing. There are 2 murders but it's hardly blood mania. Craig, a doctor who used to perform abortions, is being blackmailed for 50 grand by a hilariously miscast 'heavy'. One of Craig's patients is a wealthy old benefactor, the daughter of whom is a crazy art chick who is in love with Craig. She decides to kill the old man to get the inheritance money to solve Craig's blackmail problem, but it doesn't work. This has a Movie of the Week feel, for the most part. But again, the synopsis on the DVD package is way off - it is not about "a scorned daughter [who] murders her abortionist/physician father to get his inheritance and help out her junkie boyfriend."
WEEKEND WITH THE BABYSITTER
Written and produced by the star, George E. Carey, who also wrote, produced, and starred in The Babysitter. Almost the same film, just updated a bit and in color this time, with a subplot about a heroin addict wife getting caught up in a botched drug deal on a boat. There's a disconcerting combination of faux hippy culture, shamelessly age-inappropriate sex, and moments of unabashed sincerity. A strange mishmash of The Trip (lite), Hawaii Five-O and Lolita. And another cul-de-sac sudden ending.
MALIBU BEACH
Very light fare, typical beach movie.
PINK ANGELS
The first time I tried, I could not finish this movie. The setup of six gay bikers riding down the West coast to a drag cotillion in L.A. was fine, but the seemingly improvised dialogue and sketch comedy scenes of clashes with straight society felt like it wasn't paying off really - neither funny nor particularly captivating. I just watched it a second time, to the end, and although it is somewhat trying at times, the shocker of an ending recontextualizes the ambling, slight scenes that lead up to it and add an unexpected layer of poignancy.
In typical early 70s fashion, the Angels shock and run afoul of the law, roadside diner employees, clothing store clerks, a straight motorcycle gang, and so on, interspersed with plenty of road footage and initially inexplicable cuts to a general in a remote office. It's essentially a typical loose counterculture road movie with a gay twist. As genres go, it's probably one-of-a-kind, and as gay cinema, it's probably also historically significant. I just thought it fell short of the mark in terms of comedy, characters, and what I generally am looking for in "drive-in cult classic"-type films: either so bad it's good, or surprisingly good for how bad I expected it to be.SINGLE ROOM FURNISHED
Painfully horrible. Within 15 minutes you're in a digression within a digression and have the sinking feeling you stumbled into a black box theater where a scene study class is taking place. A blue collar couple is on a fake firescape talking about their not-actually poignant lives. The guy can't for the life of him fake a New York accent and can't stop moving his head with every word he speaks. Gave up after 30 minutes. Two nights later I picked up where I left off. That scene thankfully ended and another couple was introduced. They were no more watchable than the first, so I gave up again.

The Midnight Horror Collection: Road Trip to Hell (2010) Review

The Midnight Horror Collection: Road Trip to Hell (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm reviewing Sheltered, which is part of the Midnight Horror Collection.
It's about a group of young teens who experience car trouble in the middle of a dangerous storm, and a nearby bartender takes the kids to his house for the night.
Of course the kids don't realize the bartender is actually a psychotic killer.
The storyline develops slowly, but with a pretty fair amount of suspense so you know something good (like for example, splattered guts and blood, slashing knife action, and a ripe situation for a gruesome environment) is eventually coming. It's just a matter of *when*.
Yes, Sheltered follows the typical "one death at a time while the teens run around the house scared to death wondering who's next" routine. Despite the predictability in THAT regard however, Sheltered basically provides everything a fan of horror is looking for. Not quite as low budget as the Craving for example (which is the name of another movie on the same collection). Sheltered is MUCH better.
There's even a good storyline between the killer and a young guy named Joey. You'll probably be wondering where these particular segments are heading while watching the movie.
Overall yes, a film I highly recommend.

Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus (2010) Review

Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, there I was, searching the net for a new b ( or maybe z...) movie to give me entertainment for and hour and half. Then, by some stroke of luck, I found the sequel to last years unofficial movie of the year MEGA SHARK VS GIANT OCTOPUS. What better creaturer c to do battle with the mega shark next than a crocosaurus? And there we have it: MEGA SHARK VS CROCOSAURUS. I imediatly went onto amazon.com to pre-order my copy. And today was the day that it arrived!
As previously stated, our mega shark has apparently survived the fight with the giant octopus. We get a new team of people- including erkel- that plan on killing both the surviving mega shark and the new crocosaurus. Caos ensuses as each of there plans fails causing more and more destruction. So what's on the menu for our two creatures? Well, our mega shark still has a taste for battle ships and submarines, but not so much for planes or bridges anymore. Our crocosaurus on the other hand has a craving for African workers, killer whales, and variouse other morsels. So let's get the breakdown on msvc:
THE GOOD:
- one of my only problems with msvgo was the fact that we never got to see much of our mega shark and giant octopus. They also didn't look terribly realistic, but I didn't find that to be a problem. This time around, the effects are improved ( although still terrible, this adds to the entertainment!) and we get a lot more shots of our creatures and a lot more action.
- another improvement from msvgo is the actual fight scenes. We get two main fights between our Mega shark and our crocosaurus. They also don't consist of the same shot repeated over and over like msvgo!
- the production values also look pretty good for an asylum film, which are usually restricted to one interior of a ship being used for multiple ships and submarines. ( yes I'm looking at you msvgo!)
- the acting is pretty good for this type of movie, and so is the dialogue- lol moments with the dialogue are kept to a minimum. However that's both a good and a bad thing ( see the bad).
THE BAD:
- the main thing that kept MEGA SHARK VS CROCOSAURUS from getting a five like msvgo was the lack of fun. There was a sense of fun in msvgo that kept you entertained. You could tell the cast was having fun and not taking the movie seriously, were as the cast in this one have. It's just a bit serious sometimes, and you just want something really silly to break the seriousness.
-I missed the over-the-top dialogue from msvgo, this is what made it so hilarious! However, the dialogue in this one isntnso dramatic and over done ( which most people would consider good lol, but I found it to be a lot less funny to watch)
- also, there are some scenes in the movie were everyone was just talking, and nothing much was going on.
- the last thing I can remember that annoyed me was that it didn't try to top the plane-eating scene from msvgo! Compared to the destruction of the creatures in the first movies, these ones seem a bit people friendly. ( keep in mind that most of these complaints are miner and I dint mean to be nit- picking !)
Overall, if you enjoyed mega shark vs giant octopus then you will like this! It keeps you entertained most of the time, especially the last half an hour. Have fun viewing MEGA SHARK VS CROCOSAURUS, and I hope the asylum makes more mega- giant- saurus movies in the future!!!

Clash of the Titans (2010) Review

Clash of the Titans (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Never mind that Clash of the Titans play fast and loose with the mythological story of Perseus. Never mind that Medusa wasn't a Titan. Never mind that the Kraken is from Scandinavian mythology, and that casting Lawrence Olivier as Zeus in the 1981 version was sort of typecasting.
The new Clash of the Titans is a darker, grittier more realistic Bronze age world than the 1981 version, but the story hasn`t changed all that much. The citizens of Argos have become disenchanted with the rule of the Gods. The Gods have caused too much chaos and ruin to their lives so they've decided to take their destinies into their own hands, and destroy the temples and statues of the Gods. In doing so, Perseus'(Sam Worthington) family is killed by a falling statue of Zeus. When Zeus (Liam Neeson) learns of the desecration urged on by Hades (Ralph Fiennes), he decides to destroy the city in four days or they can offer the sacrifice of the King of Argos' daughter Andromeda (Alexa Davalos). In a visit to the throne room of Argos, Hades lets it slip that Perseus is a son of Zeus, a demi-god. Being told of his near divinity, Perseus and a group of soldiers go off on their quest to save the city.
The special effects are great! The monsters look real and the characters realistically interact with them. In 3D the water roiling off the undulating tentacles of the Kraken must look really cool! The problem is they shortchanged the story in favor of the special effects. The story only follows the barest of outlines of the myth. Same with the 1981 version, although it's a little more faithful to the myth. The most glaring lapse is there really isn't any reason for Perseus to save Argos. In the myth his reason to save the city is for the love of Andromeda. In this version he's a stranger to Argos and doesn't fall in love with Andromeda. She's barely a consideration until she's needed to be sacrificed to the Kraken. The only reason he seems to take up the quest is because he's the nearest handy demi-god that can help out. Worthington's Perseus doesn't seem very heroic, there doesn't seem to be any emotional investment in Perseus in either the quest or the surrounding characters. Most of the time he has a stoically sullen, put upon attitude, and this keeps the audience at arms length from the character. He doesn`t seem to embrace the heroic at all. Yes, he kills the monsters, but the tasks he must accomplish like tricking the Stygian witches and figuring out how to survive the encounter with Medusa, he seems to accomplish almost by accident. It seems that Perseus isn't meant to be heroic. he repeatedly says he wants "to do this (the quest) as man, not a God," and he keeps refusing the gifts of the Gods. The message in the myth is for mortals to find the divine, to find the god, the hero within themselves, Perseus' refusal of the gifts of the Gods, is the refusal to find the hero within himself.
The 1981 version, although a bit campy in it's delivery tells the hero's story better. The 2010 version delivers better on the special effects. If such a thing were possible as to merge the strengths of both, you would have a better movie.
DVD Bonus Features: The only bonus features offered with the DVD are deleted scenes.

In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, Perseus and his warriors will only survive if Perseus accepts his power as a god, defies fate and creates his own destiny.

The first review here makes me realize how good we have it with the Alamo (actually Alamos; there's a bunch in town now). We've been watching random collections of clips just like this before most every showing of any movie since the original Alamo on 4th was crankin' in the 90s, and I've just always taken it for granted and assumed that every town has a rep theatre that does stuff like this.
I guess not! For that we can say thanks to the Alamo founders, Tim and Carrie League, and all the film freaks who put these things together. They done good, and continue to do it.
This collection really shows off the endless amount of cinematic cheese that has surfaced from the primoridal b-movie auteur muck and then disappeared over the decades. And believe it, there's lots more stuff like this in the Alamo vaults! I've seen some reeeeally obscure stuff in the previews, and with luck there'll be another Alamo dvd (or three) in this series.
Sex! Murder!! Mayhem!!! Coming soon to a drive-in near you...

[42nd STREET FOREVER VOL. 4] This fourth volume of cinematic sleaze from the drive-in and grindhouse days of the 70's is bottom-feeding at its frothy finest - bile, scum, sewage, swill: call it what you will, these flicks are so bad they make celluloid sewer-trolling look like deep sea diving in the coral reefs off the Great Barrier Islands. I kid you not. The first two volumes in this series are my favorites, the third was a tad weak and shorter than it's predecessors, and this time someone really had to scour through the hairballs and pond scum in the murky filters of the cesspool to find what amounts to be some of the worst films that probably no one ever saw at your local drive-in back in the glory days of weed, whiskey and wasted youths. But if you're a fan of exploitation trailers, especially reel-ly bad ones, you're in for a treat.
Back in the day, these flicks were the anemic lifeblood of the drive-in movie circuit as it got ready to draw its last gasping breath, more so than grindhouse theaters, which had already transitioned over to hardcore triple X films and martial arts flicks in the more urban areas. Made by hacks who were only interested in the sensationalism and prevaricated press that got their odious offerings propped up like cardboard cut-outs in carnival tents and promoted in vitriolic venues where 2/3's of the audience wasn't even watching - they were preoccupied with getting high or laid or 'goofing' on the films after doing both. In those days, almost no one went to the drive-in to watch the movie.
So, what's in store for you kiddies in this dubious volume of tawdry, tasteless trailers? Well, there's some crime syndicate sleaze, murder and serial killer kicks, an assortment of apocalyptic viruses unleashed upon the unsuspecting, a sword and sandal saga or two, a few horrible horror failures, two or three Eurohorror embarrassments, a totem of insolent Indian folklore and shamanistic shenanigans, renegade rebel militias, a 'token' blaxploitation bomb, raucous and rowdy redneck bikers, insulting and infantile 'Animal House' knock-offs, curdled teen comedies aimed at the autistic and a ladle of low budget 'epics' made for next-to-nothing and hyped like 'Lawrence of Arabia'.
There's not nearly as much horror, cult, sexploitation, sex comedies or gothic films as in earlier volumes, and very few Eurotrash trailers - I wish somebody would put out a collection of gaillos, Eurocult, Spaghetti westerns, mondo flicks, sex comedies, Gothic horror, hyper-violence and sexploitation trailers from Europe - I'd be in heaven if they did. OK, OK, it's not about me - back to what's here...
It's rather sad to see such once-revered and admirable actors like Lee Marvin, Hal Holbrook, Jack Palance, Robert Culp, Yul Brenner, Kurt Jurgens, Dawn Wells, Martin Landau, Phil Silvers, June Alison, Ray Milland, Keenan Wynn, Jan Michael Vincent, Peter Sellers, Peter Fonda, Richard Burton, James Coburn, Michael Sarrazan, Gene Hackman, etc. reduced to playing characters that border on the buffoonish in films that are downright embarrassing, but as they aged, drank or drugged to excess, it was the only work offered to them, and we all have to eat, right? Besides, the heyday of the Hollywood blockbuster was over during the 70's, and wouldn't return in one form or another until the 80's.
Some of the better flicks/trailers - 'It Came Without Warning', 'The Psychic', 'Let's Scare Jessica To Death', ' Embryo', 'The Town That Dreaded Sundown', 'Breaking Point', 'Walking Tall, Pt. 2', 'Shout at the Devil', 'Die, Sister Die', 'March or Die', 'The Syndicate', 'The Loves and Times of Scaramouch', 'The Werewolf vs. the Vampire Woman', 'The Klansman', 'Goldengirl', 'The Jezebels' and 'Bonnie's Kids' ("Thank God she only had two!" is the tag line - killer stuff...).
Some of the worst flicks/trailers - 'Yor-Hunter From the Future', 'Tender Flesh', 'New Year's Evil', 'Can I Do It...Till I Need Glasses?', 'Humongous', 'Gray Eagle', 'Shadow of the Hawk', 'Die Laughing', 'Americathon', 'Simon, King of the Witches', 'In God We Trust', 'Monkey Hustle', 'Blackout', 'Legend of Boggy Creek', 'The Boogeyman', 'Rituals', 'Combat Cops', 'Moving Violation', 'Hog Wild', 'The Hard Heads' (these rednecks make the Beverly Hillbillies or Squidbillies look like the Rockefellers)...
We are also privileged to see the introductory films by later stars like Dennis Quaid, Matthew Modine, David Carridine, Steve Guttenberg, Leif Garrett and Susan Anton, among others. Quite the honor, I assure you. Everything that was wrong with the 70's is on display here, and I periodically cringed uncomfortably having lived through this heinous era, and sat in disbelief at what rubbish passed as entertainment back then. But it's not like disco and John Travolta were any better, was it?
Not the best assortment of flotsam and jetsam, but for terrible trailer freaks like me, it's a cool way to kill some time. I'd never be able to sit through the films, but I can laugh my butt off while watching the best bits in these condensed confections, can't I? Can't we all?
