(More customer reviews)I was excited to find the Pingu DVDs, including this one, on Amazon. My sons adore Pingu and were bummed every time we used up all our free Netflix minutes watching Meet Pingu and Pingu on Thin Ice over and over again. This collection is still good, stories are still funny, characters and animation fun to watch and my 3 and 5 year boys love it. But it somehow lacks the freshness of the first two collections. If my boys have a choice between this and Pingu on Thin Ice, [which I also got on Amazon] they pick On Thin Ice first every time. Still a good buy, but if you can only get one...I would get the other. Still waiting to find a copy of Meet Pingu I can pick up!

Alice (1988) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a film for children. . . sort of, with these ominous words we enter a decaying, claustrophobic wonderland filled with rusty drafting instruments, filthy shards of pottery, lots of sawdust and ageing specimen jars. Watching this movie is like being locked in a closet for a few hours, not exactly fun but impossible to escape. Alice herself undergoes the transformation from a barefoot little girl to a nineteenth century china doll exquisitley animated by the master of stop motion animation as she crawls through desk drawers and grim hallways. the famillar characters of wonderland become rotting museum displays scurrying about like nightmarish clockwork toys. the sound effects add considerably to the eldritch atmosphere - splintering wood, grating metal, and what sounds like some sort of ratchet create a disturbing effect, further reminding us how far from reality we are. this is definitely the best adaptation of Lewis Carrols masterpiece, and the rarest of all commodities - an original voice.

This adaptation of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" mixes animation and live action to create a dreamlike world, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's simply a kid's film. Young Alice (Kristyna Kohoutov?�, spoken by Camilla Power) watches a stuffed and mounted rabbit come to life in her playroom and follows it through a magical drawer into a strange world that resembles a 19th-century toy store come to life, with a few specimens from a natural history museum thrown in. Czech animator Jan Svankmajer retains the familiar story elements but tweaks them with bizarre imagery brought to herky-jerky life with his spasmodic style of stop-motion animation. The caterpillar becomes a sock puppet with dentures, while other crazy creatures materialize as creepy skull-headed beings that bleed sawdust. Throughout the tale Svankmajer returns to punctuating close-ups of Alice's lips telling the story, just to remind us that this is a tale told. In the best surrealist tradition Svankmajer uses familiar objects in unfamiliar ways, giving a fantasy quality to the banal (and the not so banal) while tipping the dream logic to the edge of nightmare. While the imagery remains more unsettling than genuinely disturbing, younger children will certainly be happier with Disney's brightly colored animated classic "Alice in Wonderland". Older children and adults will better appreciate Svankmajer's sly visual wit and unusual animation style. "--Sean Axmaker"

(More customer reviews)Honestly I have never seen the Academy Award-winning Wallace & Gromit but I am sure glad it's creators came out with Shaun the Sheep. I have seen Shaun the Sheep a few times as short skits on the Disney channel, but I didn't think much of it. When I watched this DVD, I laughed, laughed, and laughed some more! It is adorable and even though it is claymation and doesn't use spoken words. The way those mischievous sheep get into trouble with the dog trying to watch over them, and somehow the farmer never catches them!Shaun the Sheep "A Woolly Good Time" is just the newest video featuring those crazy sheep and it is 40 minutes of laughs, and I don't usually like slapstick humor. I was really surprised too that my 3-year old liked it, as he usually only likes cartoon but even he was laughing when the sheep were sneaking around! I can still picture those crazy sheep with the farmers clothes on their heads! I would definitely recommend it for all ages, not just kids!

Shaun the Sheep, appearing in the thirty minute feature "A Close Shave" appeared in the UK (and other non-U.S. nations) as seven minute Oscar winning cartoons in 2007. "Off the Baa is a collection of eight of these cartoons from the first season (listed below). Shaun is the star of farm and flock in episodes that fascinate adults and children. There are no speaking parts, but the antics stretch reality and lighten any mood using animal and people sounds.
Disney Channel seems to be the only source for Shaun cartoon broadcasts in the United States, except videos from some foreign Youtube-like sites. If you buy any videos, beware of DVD regional coding, making sure it is zero or one for the U.S. Watch for other collections of eight cartoons each - including "Wash Day", "Sheep on the Loose", "Saturday Night Shaun", and "Abracadabra". "Back in the Ba-a-ath" is also available, but I cannot find the number of episodes it includes.
A little searching will reward you with plenty of Aardman Animations videos including Shaun the sheep exercise video, BBC shorts, as well as Wallace and Grommit features, "Cracking Contraptions", full length films, cartoons, advertisements, and over a dozen new characters.. The new "A Matter of Loaf and Death" will begin to be available in June 2009 in the U.S.
Two further recommendations: First, BEWARE of torrent downloads of Shaun the Sheep series. One is a vicious scam. Second, Wikipedia has a rather complete write up on Shaun.Links too.
