(More customer reviews)I saw this $2 million film at the Edmonton film festival in 1997. From the first scene I knew I was seeing a film that was very well thought out - the windshield wipers of a bus traveling through a destroyed Sarajevo are synched to the sound track's beat. The characters were obviously well researched and it is also obvious that the director spent a great deal of time with his cast of unknown actors - there is a startling sex scene that no inexperienced actor could pull off without a great deal of coaching - a scene that caused the film to be rejected by North American distributors and is the reason the film is largely unknown there.
This film was Rade Serbedzija big break. The director, Gregor Nicholas told me after the film that Serbedzija called him one night drunk from London thanking him for making him into a bad guy. Serbedzija was thanking him because he got the roll of the bad guy in The Saint opposite Val Kilmer because of his role in Broken English. He also told me that they had to modify the bus in the first scene so that the wipers would synch with the music.
Finally, the true issue of this film - incest - is so subtle that most people don't even notice it at all.

Disclosure (1994) Review

It is the story of a business man(Michael Douglas) who's ex girlfriend(Demi Moore) comes to work at his office. In the coarse of events she become his boss and tries to further the relationship. One night in his office she tries to seduce him, even as far as having oral sex with him. After a little foreplay he turns her down and goes home to his wife. Well the next day he is charged with sexual harassment. Douglas proceeds to counter the suit. The movie shows the double standards between men and women concerning sexual assult. The audience watched as a once well thought of man becomes a outcast and a devious woman gets placed on a pedistal. What really makes this moving worth watching is the knowledge that the higher the pedistal the longer the fall. When Demi Moore's character falls, she falls hard. It's an excellant movie with a lot of surprises and a sweet kind of justice.

Like a Brother (Unrated) (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Sebastian is a 19 year old French boy living in a small town, who has unrequitted longings for Romain, who has been "Like A Brother (Comme un frère)" (2005) to him for many years. Jealous of Romain's developing relationship with a girl, Sebastian is torn between comforting his friend and jumping for joy when she goes off with someone else. While Romain is outwardly affectionate toward Sebastian, he senses his friend is gay and isn't surprised when Sebastian leaves their province to go to Paris, where he lives with his father (after coming out to him) and begins to explore his gay feelings in the club scene there. Those first few months are tough for Sebastian (who now calls himself Zack, after a character on an American TV show), who keeps thinking back to his best times with Romain. After a disappointing first sexual experience with someone who was just looking for a one night stand, Zack eventually meets Bruno, with whom he begins a tentative relationship. Then he gets a call: Romain is in town and wants to see him.
Beautifully photographed, with excellent production quality, and very attractive twink-ish actors in the two lead roles. It's short (only 55 minutes) and a little confusing, with most of the story told in abrupt flashbacks that alternate between a year ago and just a few weeks ago. In French with English subtitles (which cannot be turned off), DVD includes "making of" feature with writer, director and actors. I give it 4 stars out of 5.

The Dreamers (Original Uncut NC-17 Version) Review

(More customer reviews)...this film is (for the lack of a better word) a dream--a dream you would not willingly want to wake up from. Completely and utterly mesmerizing, "The Dreamers" pays homage to film, Paris, the 60's, and love. Apart from some of the awkward moments this movie tends to present sporadically, the movie itself was not mired by the abnormalities of some of the main characters. Though, this movie is one of the greatest I've ever viewed, it is not for everyone and cannot be readily recommended without reviewing some of the pros and cons I caught.
CONS:
-First off, if you're offended, in any way, by frontal nudity from either sex... caution: it contains a lot!
-For some, if the ending is a chief factor in deciding that you like a movie, it is possible you could be dissapointed (it ends in an unlikely manner). But if you can appreciate the ending, it doesn't hurt the film at all... Maybe people were disappointed by the ending because they didn't want it to end :)
-If not accustomed to slower-moving movies, based on a load of story depth or the like opposed to action or thiller movies, then it could be a let down.
But the cons are heavily outweighed by the pros...
PROS:
-For film buffs, Bertolucci doesn't dissapoint. The b/w segments intermingled within the storyline are anything short of genius and, for me, was the most beautiful and spellbinding part of this movie.
-For anti-censorship viewers, this movie could seem to be sent from heaven, because it doesn't leave much out.
-The acting is on a par with almost perfection, all three main characters are played flawlessly and completely take on the people they are supposed to evoke... Eva Green is especially amazing.
-The soundtrack is excellent as well. The tone that the music sets is completely appropriate and only adds to the dreamy atomsphere of the film; totally reminiscent of the 60's.
-A perfect representation of Paris in the 60's; eventhough the film's centerpoint is the main characters and their relationship with one another, the artist's home of Europe couldn't be portrayed to be more gorgeous (with the exception of the student riots in foreground).
It is difficult to stop thinking of this movie, even between viewing other movies... if I could i'd give it six stars.
