Cloak & Shag Her (2007) Review

Cloak and Shag Her (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Seduction Cinema's heyday. There's a phrase that'll make you do a double-take. It's referred to on the audio commentary on this rather lame offering. `Cloak and Shag Her' was filmed in 2002 (during the studio's prolific production period for sexy spoofs) and is finally seeing the light of day more than half a decade later. Some will no doubt say that it should have stayed cloaked forever.
The good news is that Seduction regulars Julian Wells, AJ Khan, Darian Caine, Ruby LaRocca, and semi-regular, CJ DiMarsico all feature here, but Ruby is scandalously underemployed, only appearing at the film's beginning and end. All five of these ladies are seen during the film's groovy opening title sequence as they dance to a retro guitar-based sound against a psychedelic lava-lamp backdrop. This is possibly the best part of the film with Julian and AJ getting into the swing of things while the others all look slightly out of whack. The bad news is that this film is supposed to be a sexy comedy and it fails in both respects. Parodying a parody is perhaps not a good idea. The Austin Powers movies get the treatment here.
For the goodies, Julian Wells plays April Flowers with Dean Paul as her faithful assistant, Basil Shagalittle, Ruby LaRocca is wasted in her role as April's groupie. The baddies are Darian Caine as Dr. Mean; AJ Khan as the inappropriately named Nurse Notsonice; CJ DiMarsico as Dr. Mean's clone, Bitters; Shane Annigans (I'm not making this up) plays Dr. Mean's very large henchman, Sid the Mangler. For those of you who are familiar with Seduction's sexy spoofs, you'll be disappointed to learn that Kimbo the gorilla makes another appearance here, on Dr. Mean's team. He's been renamed for this role as Kung Pow. Why the filmmakers find a man in a gorilla costume endlessly amusing, I can't imagine.
As for the plot, Dr. Mean plans world domination by the mass use of a love potion. Obviously, the most important thing is seeing our five female stars in various states of undress, frolicking with each other. And, to be fair, that's what we get - up to a point, anyway. "The sex scenes are pretty tame in this movie," says producer, Michael Raso, on the audio commentary. William Hellfire (the film's writer and director) replies that this was deliberate because they were going for comedic effect and they were hoping it may get shown on television (The Desperate Channel, presumably). Indeed, the sex scenes are not only tame, they're also unimaginative. Just when things look like they're getting interesting, we cut to a `comedy moment' with that dratted gorilla or one of the less appealing (ie, male) cast members.
Julian Wells is surely the Meryl Streep of the sex film with her endless array of accents. Julian's is slightly out of kilter here, though. Her English accent has a definite antipodean twang. However, she looks fabulous throughout either naked or in scanty retro attire. She plays April Flowers with such over emphasis that she's doing little more than going through the motions, well aware that this material is ultra thin. An actress with less experience may well have faired badly with such dross.
Of the other actresses, AJ Khan is, as always, stunningly beautiful. Darian Caine is not really at ease in this movie, largely, I suspect, because she's as baffled as the audience as to what's supposed to be happening. The same can be said of CJ DiMarsico. Ruby Larocca, as I've already mentioned, is sidelined and wasted here.
The audio commentary is interesting in places. Hellfire gives us updates regarding what's happened to some of the performers while Raso talks yet again about why it takes so long for some of Seduction's movies to be released: I think this is the third commentary I've heard him talking on this subject, and I'm still none the wiser. Unfortunately, the commentary descends into self-indulgence toward the end when Hellfire's musical exploits are discussed at length. A topic that fans (well this fan, at least) would be more interested in hearing about, Hellfire's Torture in Satan's Clinic and that film's troublesome full title, is mentioned at the very end of the commentary for about two seconds.
`Cloak and Shag Her' is unlikely to be of interest to anyone except Seduction Cinema's most stalwart fans. It is better than the abysmal The Girl Who Shagged Me (Unrated Edition), but for retro sex comedies from Seduction, I'd favor That 70's Girl and Les Chic 2-DVD Collection (the latter is also directed by William Hellfire). Better spoof movies are Spiderbabe and Gladiator Eroticus.

The Hole Review

This was not the product that was advertised. It was billed as a "witty, erotic spoof of the Japanese Ringu movies, from the director of the fluffer" I thought I was purchasing a comedy. It's nothing but soft-core porn. Don't get me wrong, the boys are hot but all the "good bits" have been cut out. If you like soft-core, this is a wonderful title. If you want to hurtle the remote at the screen when "good bits" are edited, run down the local XXX video store.

Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures (2008) Review

Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mel Brooks Spaceballs is in the top 5, if not my favorite movie of all time. So it would only be natural that I would want to get this DVD of the new toon series. Judging from reading about the show being canceled, and a few reviewers saying how bad it was when they saw it on T.V (Which i never got to do) I really was not expecting much at all when I surprisingly got confirmation that this DVD had been shipped (they had canceled it previously, but it's back again now)
It's a shame there is only 4 episodes. The 4 episodes are not exactly faithful to what you know about Spaceballs, but that does not mean they should be dismissed, as I laughed all the way through each episode. There is a couple of times you get a little disorientated wondering why Lonestar and Princess Vespa are not married, or why Sanders and Helmet would call for Lonestars help... but aside from that, Mel could have had a successful series here, had it been given a chance to get some of the kinks out like most first series do... but oh well, what can you do about it now?
Mel returns as the voice of President Skroob and Yogurt, as with Daphene Whats-her-name as Vespa & Joan Rivers as Dot Matrix.... the rest of the characters voices you can get used to, except for Cornell Sanders voice, that one really needed to be re-cast.
Surprisingly the humor was not censured out. I was expected a completely G rated cartoon here, but it's more a PG rated one that pushes the boundary of it. I was surprised at the sexual innuendos and language portrayed, which just made me like it. Had they gone a little bit more raunchier and smuttier, it could have contended with South Park and such shows.
As long as you go in not expecting a masterpeice, then you should enjoy what this show has to offer. Just sit back and remember, it's just for laughs.
Shame there is no bonus features at all :(

George Lucas in Love (1997) Review

George Lucas in Love (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Several reviewers around here really seem to want a lot from a 9 minute film.
'George Lucas In Love' was a very fun short. From Lucas' roommate Benji talking about an 'all powerful force' to his friends Hal & Chuck working on Hal's 'fastest thing on campus' to a professor whose speech patterns resembled a well known Jedi Master, this film has a heck of a lot crammed into it's 9 minutes. If anything, the filmmakers should have done a 15-20 minute film! The film was very clever and enjoyable. Maybe just a tad bit funnier than 'Hardware Wars'.
The music, cinematography, and acting are all very good, indeed. Anyone who didn't enjoy this at least a little really needs to get a sense of humor. Of course, it's a bit cheesy, but it's meant to be that way. It's presented in the slightly corny, overblown way that 'Hardware Wars' or the 'Naked Gun' films were. The same people who didn't understand those films probably won't understand 'George Lucas In Love'. It's not a 'great' film, but who cares? It's a fun little short by a guy who really loves 'Star Wars'. Some have condemned the filmmakers doing this just for the money. I seriously doubt that Mr. Nussbaum will make a huge fortune from this film and if he does, big deal. Nothing wrong with making money from doing what you love or making money at all. Surely, none of the people who reviewed this film would go and work at their jobs for free and live in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere! Anyway, GLIL is great fun and a great to watch before your next screening of 'Phantom Menace' or the original trilogy.

41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It (2010) Review

Average Reviews:

For the love of God please let this be the last of the "Spoofing Other, Better Movies" Movies, because this is absolutely the bottom of the barrel. For starters, somehow the people that made this movie failed to see that if any of those other spoof movies were actually any good, it was because they were making fun of movies that weren't already funny - i.e. satire. Making a comedy making fun of other comedies is just a stupid idea, and this movie is proof of that theory.
The acting is as bad as the writing - crap, crap, and more crap.
For the sake of us all, don't buy this movie - you'll only encourage them to make more and they aren't worth the plastic they're printed on.

Another Gay Movie (Unrated Widescreen Edition) (2006) Review

Another Gay Movie (Unrated Widescreen Edition) (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a self-appointed critical diva and yet I loved this film. Don't believe the critics: see it for yourself! If straight males can build whole franchises like "Porky's" or "American Pie," then why can't gay males have an equivalent? This film is funny and daring. Best, of course, is all the male nudity on display!
You can just look at the movie poster and recognize the stock characters here. But hey, "The Facts of Life," "Golden Girls," and "Waiting to Exhale" had stock characters and weren't bad. I loved the sassy, extroverted lesbian character in this film. For those who suffered from homophobic high school scenes, it is refreshing and joyful to see so many openly gay persons out in high school. When four gay friends try to lose their virginity, the obvious question becomes, "Why don't they lose it with each other?" The film does ask and answer that question. It doesn't leave the viewer hanging. There is a blind female character that some may read as able-ist. However, I think she was there to suggest "Only a blind woman would not know the gayness of the most flamboyant main character."
In too many films, straight or gay, with female leads or male ones, the main character usually has their love requited and walks off into the sunset with their beloved. I loved how Ellen's coming out episode did not have that happen. Here too, the characters make fools of themselves like real people do. They don't all walk off into the sunset happily ever after. Their bedroom adventures don't necessarily lead to permanent love, just as in real life. In a movie so over-the-top, I appreciated this dose of reality. Still, these boys in their late teens sure get to do a lot of things that are not legal for people under age 21 to do.
Straight men and women have an idea about how they are supposed to get down. However, gay men have a few options from which they must chose. I won't get explicit here, but I enjoyed seeing characters debate or brainstorm about their options. I liked that the movie does not condemn either act that males can do with each other.
Internet articles say that audience members gasped when they saw "all" of Richard Hatch, but for those who have been dying to see all of him since his "Survivor" days, this will be a pleasant surprise. He does a daring act rarely seen in non-adult films. I think the angle at which his "presentation" was shot may have been more of a surprise than what he was presenting. He is America's most famous bear, so it was great seeing this side of him. However, he married a man in Canada, so I don't understand why the film doesn't address whether he was having an affair or not.
This film is set in the very racially-diverse Southern California, so I didn't understand why all the leads were white. However, there were characters of color here. I didn't like the stereotypical Asian girl. I thought the Black character was African American, rather than Afro-Latino, so it surprised me that he called another male "Papi" all the time. As heavily Latino as Southern Cal is, it made no sense that there were no Latino characters. Still, this work is not half as homogenous as many gay media works in existence.
This movie may have stolen an idea from the Black and Latino gay film "The Ski Trip." This was a gay coming-of-age story that I appreciated as much as "My Life on Ice"/"Ma Vraie Vie en Rouen." Do see it and form your own opinion.

In the dirtiest, funniest, most scandalous gay-teen-sex-comedy-parody ever, four gay friends make a pact to lose their virginity by the end of the summer. But that's easier said than done, as the boys face giant sex toys, naked celebrities, masochistic teachers and an uncontrollable romance with a quiche. With a dozen jokes a minute and who's who of gay celebrities. Another Gay Movie is a candy-colored romp where getting laid is all that matters!

The Middleman: The Complete Series (2008) Review

The Middleman: The Complete Series (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Precis of the show: An art major working as a temp on the reception desk of a genetics lab is caught up in a mishap that leads to her being recruited as an agent-in-training by a uniformed man (no, not officially uniformed like a cop or a mountie, and not spandexed and/or masked like Batman or the Lone Ranger; think 1950's Army knock-off, starting with the Eisenhower jacket) who introduces himself as "The Middleman", a secret agent working for a secret agency with a secret agenda to save the world and to fight evil no matter where it is found (so that we "don't have to").
Before she knows it, our temp receptionist, Wendy Watson, is in the middle of the adventure of a life-time, fighting evil right along-side the Middleman (aka MM). And what adventures they are: fighting aliens from space disguised as the members of a boy band, collaborating -- or not -- with vampires who run a fashion company, entering Hades to prevent world destruction, dealing with evil alter-egos in an alternative universe, etc, etc, etc... and many of these adventures are handled before breakfast. Figuratively speaking, that is.
"The Middleman" is a loving parody/spoof of just about every genre any fan has ever been deeply, madly, eternally in love with... and I should know, 'cause I'm that way about all of them: most obviously, of course, is the general SF category -- but within this genre there are also the "robots are our friends -- or are they?" genre, the "invaders from space walk amongst us" genre, the "secret masters of the universe" genre, the "alternate universe" genre, the "Batman&Robin" genre, the... but why go on? If you're an SF fan, chances are you'll immediately recognize one or more of your favorite "what ifs" in every episode of "The Middleman."
And that's NOT to say that this show is derivative or recycled. On the contrary, Javier Grillo-Maxauch, the creator of "The Middleman", (who quite obviously is the SF Fan Supreme) has given every "what-if", every "do you suppose", every "could it be" that form the basis of all good SF tales those special little JG-M twists that raise his premises from "gosh darn good" (to paraphrase MM himself) to truly outstanding.
So. You start with a great concept; add exceptional writing (and, may I say, writing that was much too adult for ABC Family, the cable station that aired the episodes and dropped them after only twelve episodes); follow with casting that is absolutely spot-on for each character (I mean, even with the great writing, many actors would fail to make the Middleman anything other than a Dudley Do-right caricature, but Matt Keesler makes his nameless MM a three dimensional person -- even if he *does* drink milk and eschew any language more colorful than "heck" or "darn"); and finally, have directors who know how to handle parody and satire without making it so "over-the-top" that it fails to connect. The result will be that you have a timeless series.
I was hooked right from the start of the first episode, when Wendy Watson (Natalie Morales), our soon-to-be Middleman-in-training (Middlewoman? Middleperson? Middlebeing?), was completely unflappable in the midst of being attacked by a composite monster created in a genetics experiment gone wrong: "Andromeda Strain" sub-genre, of course. And I was *really* hooked the first time we met Wendy's roommate, Lacey Thornfield (Brit Morgan), and realized that in these two young women Grillo-Maxauch had given us two strong female roles unlike any others on TV.
And yes, with gorgeous guys and beautiful women on display, the romance genre is definitely on view here, in all its permutations: true love, unrequited love, love denied, love willingly embraced, etc, etc, etc. Interestingly, the requisite UST (unresolved sexual tension, for those who don't recognize the initials) in this show is not between MM and Wendy, but rather between MM and Lacey (who would really much rather NOT have her love be unrequited, thank you very kindly -- and I agree, which is why I adore the twist in the final episode which does, and yet doesn't, resolve the unresolvable).
So, we have both the SF and the romantic fiction genres in this show. What else? There's enough action-adventure to please any fan of the genre, enough friendship to satisfy any buddy-movie fan (the relationship between Wendy and MM and between Wendy and Lacey both qualify in this category), and enough "secret shadow government/agency" shticks to grab the Bourne audience -- provided they're willing to accept humor in the plots to take over the world.
I loved the show so much, I paid $1.99 per episode from i-tunes "just in case" the show never made it to DVD. But even with all the episodes sitting on my computer, I'm *still* gonna shell out the money to pick this set up as soon as it's released. The Middleman needs his fans.
