Clone (2000) Review

While the blurb sounded good, unfortunately Clone did not live up to its promise.
While the acting was ok, there were a couple of flaws in the script and the movie was very slow going in quite a few places.
The only bright light in the movie was the ending, which unfortunately made all of the previous 98% completely useless and a waste of the viewer's time.
Spend your money on a better movie.

Mel Brooks Spaceballs is in the top 5, if not my favorite movie of all time. So it would only be natural that I would want to get this DVD of the new toon series. Judging from reading about the show being canceled, and a few reviewers saying how bad it was when they saw it on T.V (Which i never got to do) I really was not expecting much at all when I surprisingly got confirmation that this DVD had been shipped (they had canceled it previously, but it's back again now)
It's a shame there is only 4 episodes. The 4 episodes are not exactly faithful to what you know about Spaceballs, but that does not mean they should be dismissed, as I laughed all the way through each episode. There is a couple of times you get a little disorientated wondering why Lonestar and Princess Vespa are not married, or why Sanders and Helmet would call for Lonestars help... but aside from that, Mel could have had a successful series here, had it been given a chance to get some of the kinks out like most first series do... but oh well, what can you do about it now?
Mel returns as the voice of President Skroob and Yogurt, as with Daphene Whats-her-name as Vespa & Joan Rivers as Dot Matrix.... the rest of the characters voices you can get used to, except for Cornell Sanders voice, that one really needed to be re-cast.
Surprisingly the humor was not censured out. I was expected a completely G rated cartoon here, but it's more a PG rated one that pushes the boundary of it. I was surprised at the sexual innuendos and language portrayed, which just made me like it. Had they gone a little bit more raunchier and smuttier, it could have contended with South Park and such shows.
As long as you go in not expecting a masterpeice, then you should enjoy what this show has to offer. Just sit back and remember, it's just for laughs.
Shame there is no bonus features at all :(

Dino Squad: Mutant Mayhem Review

Dino Squad: Mutant Mayhem

My son has all 4 videos that are out. We can't wait for the 5th to come out next month! We first discovered Dino Squad at a RedBox DVD Rental. We have looked fot the show on tv, but is is not available in our area.
The best part of these videos is the non-violent action. Nobody gets hit or hurt. There is a bad guy, but brains are used to solve problems with him instead of violence. Each episode has a lesson to it, ex. "how to be safe on the internet". It is not what I consider a "silly show". Kids can learn how to work with others of different races, values, and opinions. I would reccomend this to anyone with a young child who has outgrown or about to outgrow Nick Jr. and others like that.
My son just turned 4 and my daughter is 7. They both LOVE the Dino Squad and can easily watch them over and over.

Worst Week: The Complete Series (2008) Review

Worst Week: The Complete Series (2008)

This show was an example of, from week to week, a show that would make me cry from laughing so hard. One of those shows that you would snort, and laugh because it made you snort. Even when you absolutely knew what was coming next, to see it happen was hilarious. But then, the season ended, new season began and it was nowhere to be found on television. Whoever made the decision to cancel this show, whether it was up against a bigger hit (I don't even know what was on other channels in the same time slot), or what, ought NOT to be working in TV programming. I will have to get by watching this one season, over and over. It's that good, but I sure would have liked to have more than one season to enjoy.

Scooby Doo: Abracadabra-Doo (2010) Review

Scooby Doo: Abracadabra-Doo (2010)
Average Reviews:

Nice to see Scooby-Doo alive and well in this 2010 new movie. The major change is that Matthew Lillard from the Scooby live action movies, fills in as the voice of Shaggy. I always thought Matthew was the best of the characters of those somewhat bizarre movies, and here, he's more than adequate but no Casey Kasem.
The mystery: a flying half-lion, half-bird monster terrorizes a school for magicians where Velma's sister, who's got a crush on the Shagmeister, elicits the gang's help. A little tension develops between Daphne and Fred over his goo-goo eyes for Whirlen Merlin the Magician's assistant.
It has all the traditional Scooby trappings- with lots of potential suspects, lots of like creepy, 'reepy' settings- a giant castle, a dark isolated forest, an island haunted by another monster, trap doors, towers, colorful artwork, Scooby and Shaggy silliness, a few tunes, and a mystery to solve. We prefer solvable mysteries versus supernatural ones.
A cute cartoon plays during the opening credits of the feature cartoon (a novel idea) with a bouncy song that got the kiddoes dancing.
Our children, ages 3 & 6, loved it; although, we fast fowarded for the younger one, the extra spooky scenes on the 'ghostly' island, but overall the writers resolve it nicely for kids' sensiblities. As adults, growing up with SD, we liked it a lot for what it is. This one rates somewhere between "Chillout Scooby and Where's my Mummy?". 4-1/2*.

Scooby-Doo and the gang go on a trip to check on Daphne's sister, Melissa. She's been studying magic at the Whirlen Merlin Magic Academy. Apparently there's been trouble at the Academy. Sightings of a giant dragon have been scaring all the students away. The gang smells trouble and decides to investigate.

Alvin and the Chipmunks Scare-Riffic Double Feature (2008) Review

Alvin and the Chipmunks Scare-Riffic Double Feature (2008)

I grew up watching the series in the 80s, and wasn't really a huge fan- it was just one of the shows in the Saturday morning lineup. The movies were made to much higher standards than the TV show, and this one is no exception. The backgrounds are nicely detailed, camera angles are varied and effective, and the lighting is suitably dramatic when the story calls for it. The Wolfman story pretty much revolves around shy Theodore, and the situations that arise from his becoming a werewolf after being bitten. The animation is leagues beyond pretty much every children's film being released today, with surprisingly high production values for a straight to video. Cushioning, lines of action, squash and stretch, kinematics- everything missing from the typical insipid productions of today, is all here. The characters actually exist in their world, rather than looking like something dumped off of a screenshot from a bad video game. The dialogue and body language the siblings have with one another is surprisingly genuine, the writers manage to show how much the brothers love one another, without resorting to sophomoric lines. The jokes are made without being overtly mean spirited or offputting, giving us a few well placed laughs. It would be a shame to relegate this movie to the "kids only" section of the shelf, it actually doesn't suck to watch this as an adult. This title definitely belongs in every serious character animators video library. Very nice, highly recommended.
The Frankenstein movie less so, but still worth watching if you like some tired insider Hollywood jokes thrown in.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut Review

South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This movie is one of the most revealing of the century. It's ruthless, conniving, sly, smart, irreverent, stupid, and funny as hell. It'll slam your beliefs, way of life, and everything else you hold dear to your heart. That's exactly why you have to love it. You have to respect a movie that can do all of that in an hour and a half. If you want to get one of the best comedic movies of the summer, don't look for American pies or spies who shag people. Look for the movie about 4 demented children and their even more impudent townspeople. It'll be one of the best movies you'll ever see, and I guarantee it WILL PISS YOU OFF. I'm a die-hard South Park fan, and even I was offended by some of the dialouge. But that's exactly what these boys are designed to do, and I love 'em for it. Many people will try to make you believe that South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut just relies on how much shock it can garner from it's audience. Don't fall into that way of thinking: it actually has very touching messages hidden in the sea of profanity and lewdness. And isn't it always more rewarding when you have to find the messages for yourself instead of getting it served to you on a silver platter? Parents, tuck your children in early if you want to watch it. Kids, see it at your friend's house. In my personal opinion, I would nominate this movie for several Oscars: Best Picture of the year, Best musical score in a movie, and Best Director (Trey Parker). Everyone I have ever talked to about this movie say that it's appalling in retrospect. However, they always have to admit: those little guys are funny.

Lawn Dogs (1998) Review

Lawn Dogs (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This movie is an endearing tale of two square pegs in a round hole world. Devon, played by Mischa Barton, is a ten-year-old girl who has recently moved with her mother (Kathleen Quinlan) and father (Christopher McDonald) into an upscale, gated community with large houses and even larger lawns. Devon isn't really interested in her peers, as "they smell like TV and talk too fast" so she tends to keep to herself, creating her own little worlds and stories, one, in particular that involves a witch named Baba Yaga and a young girl, presumably in reference to herself. Trent (Sam Rockwell) is an early twenty something man who makes his living mowing lawns in the affluent community that Devon and her family reside. Being that Trent is from 'the wrong side of the tracks', we get a sense that while it's acceptable for him to be in the enclosed community to do his work, once he's finished, he should collect his pay and be gone. This is exemplified by the security officer (Bruce McGill) telling Trent that if he plans to be in the neighborhood past 5PM, he'd better clear it with him. I think this also shows an underlying sense of paranoia within the exclusive community towards outsiders.
The meeting of Devon and Trent occurs one day while Devon is attempting (hardly) to sell cookies for some sort of campfire girls' organization. Seems she is doing it more to appease her upwardly mobile conscious father than anything else, and she decides to venture outside of the gated community to see what lies beyond the walls. She comes across a ramshackle mobile home, finds no one home, and ventures inside. Just so happens this is where Trent lives, and he returns to find Devon inside his home. He doesn't become angry, probably because he's got little or nothing worth stealing, but seems annoyed at this small intruder, as he tells her this is private property, and he "ain't interested in buying no cookies". Devon leaves, but seems to have taken an interest in Trent. She returns the next day, where she spies Trent and Pam (Angie Harmon) in a compromising position through a window of the trailer home. Pam, a resident of the same community as Devon, appears to be just some rich girl getting her jollies with the local help, and this is confirmed later. Trent, seeming to understand the extent of their relationship, makes some comments about wanting to meet her family, to which Pam says "Yeah, right". Trent doesn't seem too put out by this, but then I probably wouldn't either as Angie Harmon is a fabulous babe. What this does show, in my opinion, is yet another way the elitist class of the upscale community uses Trent for there own purposes, mowing lawns, sexual forays, or just a target for their deriding remarks. After Pam leaves, Devon and Trent talk about various things, and find that they have something in common in that they have both had near death experiences.
Trent, a little puzzled at why this girl has taken an interest in him, sees that she's harmless but understands that people would most likely misinterpret their relationship, and tells Devon that they can be friends, but it has to be secret. One day, while Trent is mowing a lawn across the street from Devon's house, Devon brings him some water, against her mother's wishes. Trent gives Devon a turtle, which he rescued by not running over with his mower, or as Trent put it, "turning into spaghetti". Devon's mother, not aware of their friendship, assumes the gift is an implication that Trent wants something from Devon, and his motives are of a sinister nature. Eventually the innocent relationship between Devon and Trent is discovered, and immediately construed as being something that it's not. I can't really blame them too much, as I would probably be a little suspicious of a twenty plus year old man and a 10-year-old girl spending a lot of time together. Devon actually brings it to light, after an unfortunate incident with a dog. This leads to a violent confrontation outside Trent's home, and an unusual ending that was very unanticipated but ties in nicely with elements of the story. The ending countered very nicely the sense of pathos I developed as their friendship flourished, knowing that it would end badly. There are many scenes I didn't go into, providing a richer depth of the main characters, fleshing them out quite nicely.
One thing I found quite interesting was the way the community members were so quick to think the worst of Trent, and in the end, labeling him a monster, yet, we see that the true monster lies within themselves, in their infidelities, lies, contempt of those that are different, the sense of superiority that sometimes comes from wealth and power, and the perverse pleasure received by the subtle and not so subtle humiliation of those not in the same social class. The wide screen presentation is very nice, along with the audio, and the special features include trailers and filmographies of the director and some of the stars.
Ignore the cover art on the DVD case, as it alludes to some kind of sexual encounter between the characters shown, which never happens. I'm assuming this was done in an effort to drawn people in, as sex sells, but, if that's your looking for, then you will probably be disappointed. If your bag is an excellent little movie with interesting characters, good direction, a smidgen of humor, a dash of fantasy, and a rewarding ending, then look no further.
