The Seventh Stream (2001) Review

An ill-fated love story set against the backdrop of a rustic Irish fishing village. Owen Quinn (Scott Glenn), widower and fisherman has been living a solitary life since his wifes' death five years ago. That all changes when an enchanting and mysterious woman with no name (Saffron Burrows) arrives in the village. She reaches out to him for help and he responds by taking her into his home. She takes the name Mairead and before long her kind and gentle ways heal his loneliness and pain.
However their love is not to be, for she is not what she appears to be. She is a seltie, one of the mythical seal people mentioned in Irish legend and lore. Her human form is only temporary, soon she must return to the sea or perish on the shore.
This may be a Hallmark Hall of Fame feature made for television, but you wouldn't know it from the production values. This is a wonderfully done film, one of those old-fashioned romantic tearjerkers that will stay with you for a long time. It also contains some of the most breathtaking scenic shots of the Irish coastline you'll ever see.
Scott Glenn delivers a strong performance as always, while Saffron Burrows plays the part of the mythical woman/seal to absolute perfection. This is a film that can be watched over and over again without ever losing its emotional impact.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1999) Review

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1999)

I love this movie for how simple, entertaining and close to the original story it is. I am a 6th grade teacher, and for the past two years my class has read the story and watched this movie version. Last year, my kids said that it was much better than the gory Tim Burton one. I am so excited to be able to buy a copy since my taped-from-TV copy is getting worn from use!

The Staircase (1998) Review

The Staircase (1998)

Based on a true story, THE STAIRCASE is one of those uplifting Christian movies heavy on morals and faith, and thanks to an intelligent script and very good performances, it works.
Barbara Hershey gives a smooth and touching performance as Mother Madeleine, a dying nun who wants to see the completion of a chapel in the Santa Fe territory before she dies. This seems impossible when the architect "forgets" to put in a staircase to the choir loft. Without the funds necessary to complete the staircase, that dream seems unlikely...until a mysterious stranger named Mr. Joad shows up out of nowhere and offers to build a spiral staircase with no charge. CSI's William Petersen gives a strong understated performance as Joad, whose mission becomes both a blessing and a curse as the original contractors (David Clennon and Justin Louis) don't want Joad to do the staircase. It may all play out with predictable results but it's sincerity is so genuine, it's a fine little film.

Set long ago after the Ice Age, in a age of barbarian, warriors, kings and sorcery abound as a diabolical tyrant named "Nekron" and his mother "Juliane" who lives at the ice region wants to conquer the region of fire ruled by King Jerol. Suddenly Jerol's beautiful daughter Teegra is kidnapped by Nekron's subhuman hechmen, a warrior named "Lar" must protect her and defeat Nekron from taking over the kingdom as well as having the help of an avenging barbarian warrior named "Darkwolf".
A nicely done animated fantasy that has a combination of live actors traced with animation ( Rotoscoping), it's Ralph Bakshi's second best movie next to "American Pop" and "Wizards" but certainly better than his version of "Lord of the Rings". The movie is also designed by famous artist Frank Farzetta ( whom did covers to Tarzan books, Conan The Barbarian and Vampirella) with some good animation & Coloring especially the impressive rotoscopic stuff and a beautiful hottie for the guys there.
This 2-disc limited edition has great picture & Sound quality, a commentary by director Ralph Bakshi, featurettes, a photo gallery, trailer and the second disc has a documentary on Frank Farzetta and his life.
Most recommended movie to anyone who enjoys fantasy, animation and even anime!
Also recommended: "Rock and Rule", "Wizards", "Starchaser: Legend of Orin", "The Dark Crystal", "Conan The Barbarian", " Army of Darkness", " Willow", " The Black Cauldron", " Lord of the Rings ( 1978)", "Lord of the Rings Trilogy", " Princess Mononoke", "The Last Unicorn", "The Secret of NIMH", " The Hobbit", "Return of the King ( Animated)", "Hercules" (Disney), " Legend", "Conquest", "Blade Master", " Ator the Invincible", "Krull", " Dragonheart", " The Sword in The Stone", " Record of Lodoss Wars", "King Arthur", "Excalibur", " The Princess Bride".
