She Likes Girls Collection (2006) Review

She Likes Girls Collection (2006)

I liked several of the stories. None were bad enough to justify a "two-star" rating, in my opinion. First of all, bear in mind, it's low-budget, and why? Because there aren't a whole heaping load of people watching lesbian-themed short stories, that's why. I watched it to the very end, which is more than can be said for 80% of all movies. There is some good writing at work, too. I guess my favorite skit was "This Boy," the one about an androgynous little tomboy who falls in love with another girl. Here's a breakdown on each story.
"The Piper" - the first is a cheap takeoff on the Pied Piper legend. Cute and sweet, but nothing heavy, and reeks of low budget. Don't let this one prejudice you against the rest.
"The Uninvited" - best piece, dramatically - about an older woman who gets infatuated with a younger and uses desperate ploys to try to woo her. Good writing.
"Sarang Song" - Twisted. Blacks are all heroes, whites are all villains. No exceptions. White people are evil. Go kill whitey. Now.
"This Boy" - best of the lot - the precocious actress really carries this short film. Fun and just way too cute. Very well-written.
"Shugar Shank" - an aspiring young musician falls in love with a fellow bandmate (both female). Can she get past the boyfriend--and the addictions? I liked this one.
"Cosa Bella" - I don't think I ever figured out what this one was all about. Two attractive chicks that fool around decide to get serious about each other. Weak. Dialogue is difficult to hear at times. But when you do hear it, it's not even that good. This is the worst of the lot, and no big mystery as to why it's saved for the end.

Almost Illegal #1 (2008) Review

Almost Illegal #1 (2008)

I love tits and street fighting as much as the next guy but this just fell short. It's just an hour of 20 second clips. The girls were hot but over all the movie just wasn't worth watching. Ninety percent of the movie doesn't even have sound, it's just rap music playing threw the whole damn movie. The worst part was that the director tried to get artsy with it by using fish eye lenses, black and white scenes, slow motion, and rewind. It's hard to mess up something so simple but the managed to do it. They actually made tits and fighting unwatchable.

The Libertine (1969) Review

The Libertine (1969)

This is a surprisingly entertaining movie. It is almost quaint.
Catherine Spaak, one of the most beautiful actresses of the 1960's is at her most beautiful as a widow who discovers her late husnband had an apartment that he used for kinky sexual escapades. She then decides to use that apartment for similar purposes and to live a more carefree sexual lifestyle.
Movie is full of typical 1960's touches, from the art direction to the music. This is not, though, an explicit sex movie or even one of those late night Cinemax flicks. This is a fine, sexy, very entertaining movie.
The VHS version of this movie was missing several minutes of the more naughty scenes. Luckily they have been restored for the DVD version. The print quality of those scenes is not up to par, but it is still nice to see a complete version. The DVD also features some "Deleted Scenes" and some amazing 1960's trailers from the Audubon Collection. They are truly fun to watch.

Just the Two of Us (Vintage Collection) (1975) Review

Just the Two of Us (Vintage Collection) (1975)

Nothing but boring. First of all, the character of Adria has one of the most annoying voices ever. She plays the clueless, can't add 2 plus 2, and all I like to do is shop stereotype...that is until she hook's up with her best girl friend, whom she promptly leaves for the an actor, who is only using her.
The movie is really boring, the characters, although pretty ok (not well) developed, are actually very boring. So, is the rest of the movie. I fast forwarded a lot.
The movie at least confronts some stereotypes, albeit briefly, about homosexualism and nature v. nurture. It even talks about tolerance. Yay for them. Still, a very boring movie.

I love this movie for how simple, entertaining and close to the original story it is. I am a 6th grade teacher, and for the past two years my class has read the story and watched this movie version. Last year, my kids said that it was much better than the gory Tim Burton one. I am so excited to be able to buy a copy since my taped-from-TV copy is getting worn from use!

Marco Polo (2007) Review

Marco Polo (2007)
Average Reviews:

One lazy Sunday I drifted into watching this mini-series. My first impression was that it was a silly, romanticized Hollywood treatment of a classic historical account (admittedly, one that I hadn't personally read at the time).
And, yes, seeing Brian Dennehy cast as Kublai Khan made it especially hard to buy into the treatment! But the sets, costumes and storyline were all quite extraordinary. A lot of effort obviously went into the production , which was made in China with a substantial budget.
But many things just didn't sit right with me: the magnificence of Kublai Kahn's court, his cities, the military technology, and a romance between Marco and a Chinese princess? And then the Kahn charges Marco with delivering the princess to the other side of the planet???
I watched it to the end...and then ran to Amazon to find a book to get the facts. The book I found was The Travels of Marco Polo: Edited by Peter Harris (Everyman's Library (Cloth)).
Amazing news...this "sensationalized" mini-series barely scratches the surface of the astounding things Marco Polo reports in his 700 year old tale of travel!
His adventures, many of which are dramatized in this DVD, seemed absolutely unbelievable...until I found most of them proven true in the book... including the story about delivering the princess.
And the romance? Well, I suspect that Marco left quite a few personal facts out of his life in China. So kudos to the scriptwriters who wrote a little love between the lines of his historic journey.
Bottom line - a great film for couples or anyone with an interest in history.
If you just watch the film, marvel that there's more truth in this account than there is fiction! And if you want to know the truth, treat yourself to the book.

The Open Road (2009) Review

The Open Road (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a big Jeff Bridges fan and appreciate everything he has done and such, but I didn't feel grabbed by this one at all. Not that there were horrible performances or bad film making, it just had a slew of little things peppered throughout that made me not give this the above average recommendation.
The story follows a minor league ball player (Timberlake) suffering a slump, who has to get his famous big league dad (Bridges) to make a final visit to his estranged and dying ex-wife. Through some poorly staged events, they have to make it a road trip together across several states (instead of flying) to make this union happen. The scenery is quite beautiful in some of the sequences, and it even upstages some of the sparse dialogue as the long-parted kin find a way to re-connect. Kate Mara is the tag-along friend who offers the love interest of Timberlake, but the chemistry never materializes in ways it should have.
The Blu quality is average to below average, with the strong showing being the opening aerial shot of the baseball game (must have used a different camera - they usually seem to in those kinds of scenes). Some of the color/contrasts in the open road shots shine nicely, but the amount of indoor and dark sequences show several weaknesses. The 5.1 is uneventful, and the only supplement offers little insight other than some typical fluff. Did not get to the commentary as I could not venture sitting through this twice. Three for the film content and Mr. Bridges (the supporting cast of Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton are not present enough to warrant dissecting their screen time). I love road films so maybe this will give you some light entertainment on a slow night.

In this heartwarming comedy, minor leaguer Carlton Garrett (Justin Timberlake) takes an unexpected road trip to track down his estranged father, legendary baseball player Kyle Garrett (Jeff Bridges) when Carlton's mother (Mary Steenburgen) becomes sick.Knowing his charming yet painfully immature dad's likelihood to disappoint, Carlton enlists his on-again-off-again girlfriend Lucy (Kate Mara) for emotional support.Once reunited, Carlton struggles to deal with the series of misadventures caused by his father's antics, including missed flights, car trouble and bathroom brawls. Years of miscommunication, frustration and comically awkward attempts at bonding come to a head as the mismatched trio make their way from Ohio back home to Houston to reunite the family.

Naked in My Room - Skye Come Play with Me Review

Naked in My Room - Skye Come Play with Me
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm fairly unimpressed with this dvd. Skye, the young lady featured on the cover, has maybe a 6 minute scene shot looking fairly 2002ish (the quality of the camera shot, not the actual time-frame.) Two other models not shown are also featured: Alyse and Bella Valentine. Their scenes were also quite non-spectacular. Bella Valentine is a more "endowed" Italian woman and Alyse is your typical redhead-ish American female. The annoying thing for me that was common to all the shoots were the constant 5-second cycle shots where you would have 1 slow-moving angle, fade-out, and then fade-in with another angle for another 5 seconds - which keeps nauseatingly looping until the end of the shot. Alyse's entire shot was over-saturated with a red filter.
The models also have 1 on 1 clothed interviews which were actually more interesting than the main "attraction." However, Skye's interview deserved no more than 0.25 points out of a possible 10. All of her answers were mumbled and vague, plus she was looking down and filling out paperwork - barely even paying attention to the interviewer! One of the questions posed to her was "what is your favorite drink," to which she replied with "Mountain Dew" - explaining much to the quality of her teeth.
Skye is around 18 years of age and the other 2 models are clearly over 18. Skye has a lower-back rope/butterfly-looking tattoo and also spotty acne scars on her face - which isn't apparent on the cover due to a somewhat deceptive airbrushed shoppy-looking high contrast image.
To the other reviewer who called this "art," I would say this would more fit the description of "erotic nudity" - which still is a definite long shot from actual "pornography." I came to the conclusion of "erotic nudity" because of the type of shots used (5-second fade outs and ALSO some occasional zoomed female "parts" line-in-frame views), which would definitely NOT go down well if the context of the dvd was "artsy [family-implied] nudism." Plus the interview questions also had something to do with it as well. Questions like "What kind of things do you like in a man," and "What makes a woman 'sexy'," were common in all of the interviews.
In any case, I simply cannot recommend the dvd to anyone, especially at the $20 price point. Save your money and thanks for reading.

The Uninvited (2009) Review

The Uninvited (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Uninvited begins with our protagonist, Anna, in a mental ward after dealing with the emotional trauma of losing her mother in a freak fire. As the film begins, her psychiatrist believes she is ready to go back into the real world and she is allowed to move back in with her father and her older sister, Alex. Unfortunately, father is now seeing Rachel, a nurse who was in charge of Anna's mother. This weird situation is further complicated by the fact that Anna is becoming more and more convinced that her mom wasn't killed in a freak accident...maybe she was murdered.
So if you have watched ghost movies over the last ten or so years, you basically know this film. It hits all of the major plot points, has a couple requisite twists and throws weird scares at you (it is based on a Korean film, you know). I expected all of this. I even expected one twist that I thought was revealed very early on. Even so, the ending still surprised me and I have to say that this film was classy in telling a familiar story. The truth is, there hasn't really been a genre-changing film in the ghost story genre for awhile now. The Uninvited is no different. So, what is important is not what is being told (as there's nothing new under the sun), but how it's told.
Here The Uninvited soars where a lot of recent ghost stories (Unborn, for example) have failed. The storytelling is far classier than it has any right to be, the script is well-written and convincing and the actors are terrific. Emily Browning, playing Anna, practically carries the weight of the film on her slender shoulders. With her forlorn and innocent gaze, you really start to feel for her increasingly desperate plight. Meanwhile, her sister is played perfectly by Arielle Kebbel who brings a sexy older sibling charm to the proceedings. And then there's Elizabeth Banks, playing the stepmother who might not be all she says she is.
All of this is pitted against a murder mystery or two and wrapped up in a perfect bow. There's not a dull moment in the film, the scares actually startled me, even when I expected them and some of the ghostly hauntings could give the weird factor of The Grudge/Ring a run for their money. It's effective and very well done.
I definitely recommend going to see it. The Korean film, A Tale of Two Sisters, is definitely in my scope now, to see how it stacks up. Go see The Uninvited if you're in the mood for a fun, classy and, yes, sometimes scary ghost story.
