"Submission of a Woman" aka "Al Calar della Sera" is part rape & revenge/part giallo film. It's a difficult film to watch, but is worth purchasing. Very intense! If you're a fan of "I Spit on Your Grave", "Assault!", "The Killer Must Kill Again", etc. Check this film out!!! Very overlooked!!!!

Joy & Joan (1985) Review

Joy and Joan (1985)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Joy and Joan (1985 - French) In this sequel to 'Joy', based on the best-selling international novel, Brigitte Lahaie is cast as Joy, replacing Claudia Udy as the lead from the first film, and is probably reason enough to view this flick. Lahaie takes over the titular role of an international supermodel with a relentless passion for sensual pleasure, and possesses one of the screen's most near-perfect and desirable figures ever paraded for our pleasure. She's a statuesque goddess of the female form, worthy of worship and an altar, and is breathtaking when undraped.
Unfortunately, for me anyway, she's not undraped often enough, not when you consider her 70's career as a hardcore performer. And, to her credit, one of the few actors to transcend her early career and become a fairly respectable legitimate actress ('Henry And June', a host of Jean Rollin films, among others). Don't get me wrong, the film delivers to a certain European soft-core extent, but leaves you wanting more of what you were hoping for when you picked this one up. In the first half of the film, we don't get to see much of what's transpiring during the sex scenes, leaving them tepid at best. Bummer.
Once she gets to Thailand, however, things heat up a bit when Isabelle Solar is introduced as Joan, a tour guide who at first aids and comforts Joy, then there's a Sapphic session that's truly enjoyable viewing, and they fall in love afterwards. With the males in the film being as despicable as they are, it's easy to comprehend why. But can one woman satisfy the carnal desires that embody Joy and her lascivious lifestyle?
Soon enough, the ladies are back in France, old flames re-emerge, and new equations are thrown in the mix. There's an excellent ménage a trois at the conclusion of the film that redeems some of the lameness of the earlier sex scenes, but this and the scene with Joy and Joan are really the only worthwhile exploitive reasons to see this one. And the lush Thai scenery is as interesting as anything the plot has to offer.
As usual, Severin gives us a fine quality print with only a few blemishes, good colors and contrast, but fails to deliver any extras of any kind. Not a trailer, slideshow or even a bio. All in all, a must-see/have for fans of Brigitte Lahaie, one of the seven wonders of the 70's/80's world, and for soft-core fans of Eurotrash like me.
3 stars for the flick, 1 added for Brigitte and the (Thai) scenery...

It is rivaled only by the Emmanuelle series for its daring sexuality and enduring popularity. And in this first and best sequel to the erotic smash JOY, French hardcore goddess turned respected actress Brigitte Lahaie (HENRY & JUNE) takes over the titular role of the international supermodel with a relentless passion for sexual pleasure. This time, Joy flees the betrayals and depravities of her male lovers only to find ecstasy with a gorgeous tour guide (the delicious Isabelle Solar). But can one woman find a way to fulfill Joy's most intimate and shocking desire? This DVD has optional English subtitles.

Vanessa (1977) Review

Vanessa (1977)

This is a German take on the classic Emmanuelle. An Austrian convent schoolgirl inherits her uncle's string of brothels in the Far East. She flies off to Hong Kong to experience the naughty Orient. She is introduced to sex (what else) in all its forms, straight, lesbian, and forced - She finds a particular attraction in the latter - probably all those bare-bottomed spankings at the convent. Sex scenes here are of the very softcore variety (The whipping scenes are limp, lame and some of the least convincing around - good for a laugh though). Olivia Pascal is absolutely lovely as are two of the other ladies but the rest of the cast far less so. The Chinese women in particular were sadly wholly unattractive. Hong Kong is full of pretty Chinese girls so it's a wonder how they ended up with this sorry lot. Director Hubert Frank himself admits that they were "ugly" - his reminiscence about how he found them at the local strip-club is funny - they looked good when he hired them in the dark, but he got the shock of his life when he saw them again in the clear light of day. Acting quality is par for course in a softcore flick - fairly mediocre. As mildly amusing erotica, it's a pleasant enough way to spend the evening. Just sample the corny scene featuring the opening notes of Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (the famous music from 2001) as Jackie the blonde woman slowly opens her thighs to the entranced Prince Bandar. Couldn't stop laughing. Or witness Bandar's skills in psychic sex - and especially his ability to induce telepathic orgasms. Plus it's nice to see pretty women with natural body hair for a change - this film was made before the hairless barbie-doll revolution swept the world.
The transfer from Severin is rather disappointing. It's presented in 1.78:1 widescreen (anamorphic). It's acceptable but a full notch below Severin at its best. The print shows its age. Although it's been cleaned up, there are quite a few instances of print damage which are left uncorrected, some glaringly obvious. The print overall is dark and lacking in definition. It is soft, sometimes, blurry, although that is partly due to the photography. It is grainy. The colours are dull and quite lifeless - flat. Hong Kong never looked duller than here. But the picture in and of itself is quite watchable. What I did not like was the removal of the original German soundtrack. We are instead given a very badly dubbed English audio track with everybody sounding faintly American. I get very irritated by dubbing, especially when it's badly done. I would have loved to hear Olivia speaking in her own voice but alas no. The credits are all in German. The main Extra is a half-hour interview with Director and DP; all in German with obligatory English subtitles (burnt in). There is a 15-minute long wordless "Making of" featurette plus the original theatrical trailer. Worth a rental. Buy only if you're a die-hard fan of the lovely Olivia Pascal.

Catherine's Pain (2010) Review

Catherine's Pain (2010)

Having purchased and viewed a few of Bill Zebub's low budget efforts I have a fair sense of where he's coming from and how well he's achieving it. A couple of his favorite genres are obviously horror & sexploitation and his 'films' (actually most are shot direct to video) are often awash in transgressive imagery and plot lines. Occasionally Zebub pokes fun at himself and the genre with some satirical flair ("Assmonster" and "Dolla Morte" come to mind) and these can be sorta amusing in a heavy-handed way. On other occasions Bill takes himself 'seriously' and often the result is somewhat less successful... which is how I would rate "Catherine's Pain".
Having now sat through this mean-spirited little flik I'd have to say that it was a pretty hack exercise. It is mentioned within the film's 'extras' section that this movie is actually a re-make/re-packaging of one of Zebub's earlier efforts: "Rape Is A Circle". Buried somewhere in the 'plot' there appears to be a moralistic glimmer that Zebub is attempting to show the causal motivation for his female lead character's, otherwise somewhat inexplicable, actions in kidnapping two innocent females and subjecting them to a bunch of torturous indignities. Sounds like it could be 'hot', but, believe me, it's not. When the film lapsed into bringing out the Barbi dolls to provide some 'artful' symbolism it totally lapsed into absurdity. Like all Zebub flix there is a goodly helping of topless girls, but even that can't save this one.

Forbidden World (Roger Corman's Cult Classics) (1982) Review

Forbidden World (Roger Corman's Cult Classics) (1982)
Average Reviews:

Corman's Galaxy of Terror is usually referred to as a rip-off/cash-in on Alien, but that film has very few similarities with Alien. Corman's low budget schlocker, Forbidden World definitely fits the Alien rip-off bill much more accurately..
The film involves an intergalactic buttkicker named Colby(Jesse Vint) who's summoned to a science lab on a distant planet to check out an experiment that "got loose". And I'm assuming, to kick it's butt. Colby arrives at the station to find that "Subject 20" as it's called, has escaped, killed all the lab animals and locked itself away in the incubator for a little R&R before it goes on a killing spree. Colby spends a good amount of his time giving the two, horny and attractive scientist chicks something to study in the after hours. Meanwhile, Subject 20 finally makes up his mind to leave the incubator on account of some flunky who decides to open the incubator door to get a better look at it when he noticed it started moving. Now it more or less becomes Alien-Roger Corman's Alien, that is! That is to say, shameless and cheesy(it ought to be with a character named Colby), with a bunch-O gore and T&A.
Once again, Corman really stretches his dollar. This film had a smaller budget than Galaxy of Terror, though in some parts it actually looks a bit more slick than Galaxy. The Making Of.. documentary on the disc provides some interesting insight on how the film was made. The second disc is the director's cut titled Mutant(a much better title considering the title "Forbidden World" doesn't make a lot of sense in the context of the movie). It's worth a look, though the film didn't get the same slick remastering as the first disc, so it's a bit rough.
All in all, another great Corman disc from Shout Factory. Makes a good double feature with Galaxy of Terror(especially at about 3 AM).
