Queen's Blade Wandering Warrior: Beaten Path (2008) Review

Queen's Blade Wandering Warrior: Beaten Path (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Queen's Blade is a series that is built upon its superb characters, and the second volume of the anime expands the cast past the introductory characters from the first volume. As the first season enters it's halfway point the foundation begins to establish itself by introducing more characters and expanding the characters of the existing ones. The action, character development, diverse vistas, and great music are all back in stronger form than in the first volume; sure to satisfy anyone who was not satisfied by the action in the first volume.
The fanservice is still in strong form in this volume, perhaps even stronger than the first, but, as always, the series executes it's fanservice with sophistication and toungue-in-cheek moments of humor. This is one of the main highlights of the series; how the fanservice in Queen's Blade never feels forced, unnecessary, or juvenile in it's execution. As a result, Queen's Blade comes across as a fanservice anime that one can respect for it's characters, story, humor, and action rather than one of those anime one hides under their bed.
With this volume, Queen's Blade is at the midway point of it's first season; however, the entire first season acts as a foundation for the simply stellar second season. This is why I give it 4 stars. The second season is definite 5 star material.

Ghost in the Shell: Individual Eleven Review

Ghost in the Shell: Individual Eleven
Average Reviews:

It's not obvious from the product page here on Amazon, but this is an edited version of the entire 26 episode series. It has been cut down to 2.5 hours for a movie experience. It is a good buy if you have already seen the entire series or don't want to spend the time which would be upwards of 9 hours if watched as 26 episodes. It gets the idea of the story, but of course, some good things are lost. Personally, I think GITS is too good not to see all of the details.

Ranma 1/2 - The Movie 1, Big Trouble in Nekonron China Review

Ranma 1/2 - The Movie 1, Big Trouble in Nekonron China
Average Reviews:

I thought this movie was great! BIG TROUBLE IN NEKONRON CHINA was a great movie for the Ranma ½ series and it was also very funny!
It starts out as a "normal" day in the neighborhood when panty thieving Master Happosai comes back for a "visit" to the Tendo dojo. But he's not alone! After years of searching for him, a young Chinese girl, Lai Chi and her elephant, Jasmin have followed him all the way back to Japan. She's angry about a scroll that was given to her family and passed down many generations because it was said that the scroll brings luck to the holder of it. After taking her hands off of it for a second, the prophecy comes true and a Prince comes to find and marry the one who holds the scroll, and by pure luck Akane has the scroll. She gets kidnapped by Kirin and the 7 Lucky Gods Martial Artists and now it's a race to follow them to China and save Akane before she gets married to Kirin. It's up to Ranma, Ryoga, Mousse, Shampoo, Mr. Tendo, Mr. Saotome, Happosai and Kuno to save her and defeat the Seven Lucky Gods.
This is a great movie for the Ranma series. It's very funny, the story is great and all of your favorite characters are in this one. Along with a great soundtrack, BIG TROUBLE IN NEKONRON CHINA is a necessary component to any Ranma fan's collection. Plus Lai Chi is hilarious. She is really funny. Happosai's "usual antics" are pretyt funny as well, like when Ryoga and Happosai get into it on the boat to China. And of course, the Seven Lucky Gods weren't bad either.
Definitely check out this movie, it's very worth it and it's great for any Ranma collector. Also check out the special OAV series and the second movie RANMA ½ NIHAO MY CONCUBINE. I do warn you that if you aren't up to speed with the series, you might want to catch up a little and check out TV Series 1 and the ANYTHING GOES MARTIAL ARTS series otherwise some things might not make all that much sense. Either way it goes, you'll enjoy this one.

Street Fighter - Soul Powers (1996) Review

Street Fighter - Soul Powers (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let's get the obvious out of the way. I'm sure the main reason the majority of guys are going to buy this is because of the shower scene. Let me just make one note about it and move on. The english version has an EXTENDED version of the shower scene. There is still one shot that's missing (just to be exact). However, the Japanese side of the disc does indeed have the UNCUT version of the shower scene. So feel free to go nuts, take screen shots etc. It is in here.
Now on to the rest of the review. This release is in everyway superior to the original US release.
It has the UK version of the movie (which is vastly extended over the US version) and the Japanese (completely un-cut).
The menu system is also a vast improvement (since the original DVD didn't even HAVE a menu system). The extra's, while sparse, also make it a cut above the original release.
The only thing I could possibly fault this release with is that it's only the Japanese version that's completely un-cut, while the UK version is merely extended.
Even that's not much of a fault. I don't typically watch my anime with the Japanese track, but with this one, I'll make an exception.
Once you see the Japanese version, you'll realize just how bad the english dub is. The dubbing team had to add to the dialogue to fit the mouth-flaps. This made for a lot of (for a lack of a better word) stupid dialogue that made some scenes go on painfully too long. It killed a lot of the flow of the movie. The original Japanese dialogue fits the flow of the movie better, and the voice acting is simply better.
While I may have actually grown to like KMFDM, Alice in Chains and Korn, thanks mostly to this movie, I can't deny that losing their music is a small loss considering how much better the dialogue is in Japanese.
A few notes on the movie itself. Yes the plot is paper-thin. But the fight scenes are what the movie is all about, and in those, Street Fighter II shines. There are a few parts with bad animation (crossed eyes being my major gripe). But taken as a whole, this movie is very well put together. It's well worth the cost. Stay away from the original US release at all costs.

Death Note: Re-Light, Vol. 1 - Visions of a God (2009) Review

Death Note: Re-Light, Vol. 1 - Visions of a God (2009)
Average Reviews:

...I was quite disappointed w/this DVD.
First, the good stuff: The animation of the new scenes is lovely; the colors & design are brighter and crisper than in the original anime. It's really the only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. The extra scenes are interesting, but don't add that much to the original series.
OK, now the bad stuff: This is basically a clip show, following just over halfway thru the anime (where a particularly lovable character dies). It's framed by Ryuk telling the story to another shinigami. But that's about it.
I'd had high hopes for this DVD (given the description), but, alas, they were dashed [siiiiigh].
I'd recommend this for (a) Death Note completists, or (b) someone who doesn't want to invest the time in watching the entire first half of the original anime.

Nana: Uncut Box Set, Vol. 1 (2009)
Average Reviews:

For any of you who may have suffered through the ridiculous train wreck that was the Peach Girl anime, Nana is a fresh breath of air. Yes there's pretty clueless girls, and plenty of hot guys, and yes there's lots of drama. but it's all done better. The animation is better. The voice acting is better, the characters are more developed and real. It is kind of paced slow, it starts at the present time and then spends 6 episodes giving u their back story of the year before they all moved to Tokyo. The only bad episode is where u see basically the entire first episode all over again, but with smaller new parts added. that was kind of cheap, but its off to a great start. It follows the manga pretty faithfully, and so everything is gone into detail..maybe a little bit too much. and sadly at episode 11 things are really starting to take off, but that's where this dvd collection cuts off. My ouran host club collections have at least 13 episodes and i think they could have at least given us two more episodes for the price they are asking. Nana is a great story, and it is a rollercoaster, things don't always work out they way u think they will. If u like, drama, love, sex and lots of rock'n roll then Nana is for u!
also, i got a sweet guitar pick with Nana O.'s tattoo on it. very cool. check this one out ladies!!

Bastard - Complete Collection Review

Bastard - Complete Collection
Average Reviews:

I first heard of the "Bastard!!" series back in the early 90's and recalled many fans at an anime convention talking about how cool the series was and how funny it was because of the main character's name (Dark Schneider) and the many references to popular US metal bands (from the 80's).
After watching all six episodes, I just fell in love with this series. There have been several "Bastard!!" video games available for the SNES and Sony Playstation and the series has yet to be "fully completed", although the six-OAV episode arc is just totally awesome!
The series is about an evil warlock named "Dark Schneider" who has been freed from imprisonment and fortunately, the evil warlock has been combined with a very good kid named Rushe which makes him somewhat a hero to aid the people of Meta-Rikana" and take on his old generals and army.
The storyline is just awesome but since this anime includes combat, humor and wizardry...the battles can be bloody and too violent for some people.
All in all, an awesome anime featuring awesome characters (and character designs) such as Ninja Master Gara, Thunder Empress Arshes Nei and more.
Check out this anime, you won't be disappointed.

Gungrave: The Complete Series Box Set Review

Gungrave: The Complete Series Box Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gungrave tells the tale of two best friends put on the path of their own destruction. Brandon and Harry are two street hoods who join the mafia and begin the climb the ladder, and their ascension makes a mark on everyone around them.
Gungrave is a noir, mafia story with an anime twist. It deals with the internal politics of the mob at first, before it becomes something personal for our main characters. Despite being in the business of killing, the Millenion syndicate has an unbreakable law, "Protect, and never betray the family." The "Code of Iron" drives the entire anime.
Gungrave is not a shounen. It's closer to Cowboy Bebop and Trigun at certain points. There are no bombastic characters in the mafia. These are hired killers that disassociate themselves from their dirty business. The first half of the series focuses on Bradon's, the main character, memories of the time before he died. The anime twist are the horrors that unchecked ambition created, that Brandon must fight in the second half of the series. Despite being centered around organized crime, the violence doesn't feel gratuitous, there is no drug use, and matters of love (of any kind) are relatively tame.
I definitely think Gungrave is worth a second look. If you liked Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, give this a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised.
I gaze at that gray haired hulk and think, "Beyong the Grave" was once a man. A man named Brandon Heat.I want to mention that you might want to skip the first episode of the series. It's supposed to entice you to watch more, but most might consider it misleading and confusing. Episode 2 is a much better place to start, IMO.

Its a great family movie, that is one thing that I love about the Naruto movies and the series is that it is filled with life lessons that really prioritizes and sets what truly matters in perspective.
This movie features some of my favorite characters from the series, it is funny (of course anything with Naruto and Rock Lee is) and has a lot of action. With out getting into the plot too much or ruining all the good parts for you, its a typical Naruto movie where the squad is sent to escort/protect someone, what is suppose to be a clean cut mission turns into a lot more. The squad is forced to use their wits, team work, and abilities to carry out their mission.

Birdy the Mighty: Decode 02 Review

Birdy the Mighty: Decode 02
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Birdy the Mighty: Decode, season 2 is a truly great anime Sci-Fi series that excels in just about everything - plot, animation, audio, and action. Basically it's a series that would be the result of combining Men in Black, Wonder woman, and Blade Runner. You can find all kinds of information of what the series is about elsewhere, so this will be a review of the Funimation release, which is what it should be about. I received my copy in on Friday 11/12.
Watching Funimation's DVD set of season 2 was the second time through the season, and it still was as good as watching the first time through. Visually the DVD is mastered well with the video having good resolution, color, and motion handling. The audio is well done too, though only output in stereo with Japanese w/English subtitles. The only thing that has been mentioned on forums is the ending for each episode has had English credits imposed over the original video, with the video image resized like a picture in picture view, sitting over in the top left corner. Personally it's not a big deal to me, the episode closing/openings get in the way of going through a series - I almost always skip right to the episode beginning for anime series. I do like the second season opening very much; Content of the disc is just Birdy the Mighty Decode episodes on both discs with Funimation trailers in addition on the second disc. No clean OP/ED or other additional bonus items.
Overall, this is a solid release for visual and audio quality. My personal opinion is the English track takes away too much from the series, it just doesn't feel like you are watching the same show. Birdy the Mighty: Decode (both seasons) is one of my favorite anime series; you can really connect with what the characters are going through. It would only be better being released on Blu-Ray (properly - not a release like Funimation's status quo upscales.)
Edit: FYI, The OVA Cipher episode is included in this set as Episode 26. It is highly recommended you watch Episode 26 before watching 14-25.

Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) Review

Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Resident Evil series has become one of the top selling titles for video game company CAPCOM. Known in Japan as "Biohazard", the series has sold over 34 million games and among the series, one of the most popular titles was the 1996 Sony Playstation game "Resident Evil 2' which introduced us to the characters of Racoon City rookie police officer Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield (sister of "Resident Evil 1' hero Chris Redfield).
The two were popular characters that fans enjoyed and in 2005, "Resident Evil 4' featuring Leon Kennedy became a huge hit earning "Game of the Year" by various publications.
With the popularity of the character of Leon Kennedy, how fitting was it when CAPCOM announced the reuniting of both Leon and Claire. As a fan of the video game series, I was definitely excited and couldn't wait to see the film. "resident evil: DEGENERATION" takes place seven years after "Resident Evil 2'.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
Picture quality is pretty good. The film is entirely in CG and was created in Maya. The CG was well done but not as fluid as "Final Fantasy: Advent Children" but still looked very impressive. The rendered character models were just great to look at (especially at the beginning when you see the airport or even the WilPharm HQ. Both look very realistic!) and Leon, Claire and Angela Miller model renders were just very well done. If anything, there is slight jerkiness when it comes to a close up of a character and trying to make it do natural and realistic movements during a conversation. But during the action scenes, the movements were very nice and overall, the CG was very well done.
If anything, fans of the video games will more than likely enjoy these CG rendered scenes.
As for audio, the audio is featured in Dolby Digital 5.1 and during the action scenes (which there are many), sound does come alive and sounds very good on my system. Dialogue is quite clear. As for the music, the ending theme "Guilty" is by Japanese music artist ANNA TSUCHIYA.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The DVD features quite a few special features which include:
* The Generation of DEGENERATION featurette - This featurette interviews Makoto Kamiya and other CAPCOM staff and their goal with the film, why they used the actual English voice actors in terms of the motion capture (including having them learn how to hold a gun) and more behind-the-scenes footage on the creation of the film. Also, fan reaction at San Diego Comic Con.
* Character Profiles - Profiles feature a text blurb on each character and you can access a video or photography profile (from parts of the film).
* Voice Bloopers - This is more or less bloopers but not sure if it was intentionally created or if it was actual bloopers. One featured Leon Kennedy telling the others about his "fee". Quite funny to watch.
* Faux Leon Interview - I'm not quite sure what this feature was about. A man is interviewing one of the motion capture actors and the actor is talking about working with Kamiya-san and others on the film.
* Resident Evil: Degeneration Trailers - Trailers for the film
* Resident Evil: Degeneration Tokyo Game Show Trailer - Tokyo Game Show trailer
* Resident Evil 5 Special Game Footage - Promotional video for the upcoming Playstation "Resident Evil" game.
* Resident Evil 5 Game Trailers - Trailers for the upcoming Playstation 3 video game.Let me first say that I am a big fan of the "Resident Evil" series and I own nearly all the US releases. "Resident Evil 2' really was innovative when it first was released for the Sony Playstation and was my favorite R.E. game until "Resident Evil 4' was released and that video game was just incredible.
So, that being said, watching this film had me smiling because I absolutely adore both the characters of Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. How this film furthers the storyline of the two characters but also builds on certain situations that may have major ramifications for future video game releases is quite exciting.
So, with that being said, I enjoyed the film because the creators really wanted to pay homage to "Resident Evil 2' and "Resident Evil 4' video game series and its fans. But I realize that many people who are not familiar with the video game series are wondering how the context of this film is to the live-action film series featuring Mila Jovovich.
There is a relation by name and of course, the virus that turns people to zombies but really, this film was created for the fans of the video game series in mind.
Also, with this being a video game-related film, many who crave a deep storyline with character development of who is Claire and who is Leon may feel disappointed. The reason why video gamers who played the video games is that through those video game moments of playing these characters for hours, there was a vested interest.
I would assume that many viewers not familiar with the video game series won't pick up the importance of Claire or Leon to the actual "Resident Evil" storyline. In fact, some may wonder why they should care about these characters especially at the end with the politics surrounding the viruses.
So, with that being said, "resident evil: DEGENERATION" is an awesome film for those who followed the video game series. The film features plenty of non-stop action, bloody violence courtesy to the zombies and you even get a scene with blood that splatters on to the camera. But the enjoyment comes from those who had the experience of playing "Resident Evil 2' and "Resident Evil 4' and to see Claire and Leon again.
The CG looks great and there are some moments that I was just really in awe but at the same time, there are some movements that were jerky and robotic at times. But overall, the model renders were good and Leon and Claire look very good. So, the bottom line is that this film is just total fan service for "Resident Evil" video game fans. So much that I highly recommend this DVD.
For those who are not familiar with the video game series, you may enjoy it but if you are expecting a continuation of the live action films, then this DVD may not be for you. In fact, some may be disappointed because there is no strong plot for them to truly enjoy these characters especially without playing the video games. So, I can understand if they don't get into it.
Again, if you are fans of the "Resident Evil" video games, you can't help but have a smile on your face because there is now a "Resident Evil" film that was created with the RE video game fan in mind. And for that, I recommend this DVD for you!

Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust (2001) Review

Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Vampire Hunter D (from the Kikuchi Manga) is one of anime's most venerable titles. The original movie helped define what was to be expected of Japanese animation, and its influence was felt through titles like Akira and Princess Mononoke. So, when the sequel was announced, fans began to drool all over themselves in anticipation, and for good reason ' everything is improved in this movie (actually the THIRD installment of the Manga), from the animation to the handling of the story, and it's a true pleasure to watch on anyone's home theater.
The main character, D, is a half-human, half-vampire whose dark legacy affords him near-supernatural qualities. He uses his abilities to fight evil, and is considered the best vampire hunter in the land. His next prey is Meier Link, a gentleman vampire who has kidnapped a rich businessman's daughter. His competition is the Markus brothers, a group of mortal vampire hunters who, together, equal D in power, cunning, and skill. With the help of his symbiotic Hand (a wisecracking mouth that gives D advice and offers comic relief), D sets off to find Link, only to discover that things are not what they seem.
The animation is top-notch, fluid and vibrant, and the painstaking detail on the backgrounds puts the viewer smack into D's world. Crosses are everywhere, and each gothic spire serves as a reminder of the constant threat of vampires ' and of the heroism of D and his kind. The DVD transfer leaves nothing out, coming off clean and sharp all through. The DD 5.1 soundtrack is amazingly aggressive ' easily one of the best digital tracks available ' and Bloodlust could serve as a decent demo disc to show off a new home theater system. The creators should be applauded for their efforts, as sound is just as important as backgrounds in animation, and no detail was spared.
Much has been made about the fact that there wasn't any Japanese track on this DVD. Guess what folks? The movie was originally recorded, and lip-synced, IN ENGLISH. That's right, ENGLISH. So do your homework, fanboys! Really!
Even if you aren't an anime fan, at least give Bloodlust a try; with such a great video and sound transfer, and a great movie to boot, it's hard not to rave about it.

Dragon Ball GT: Season One Review

Dragon Ball GT: Season One
Average Reviews:

Unlike most of the people giving this a bad rap, I actually own the product in question. This is not just some kid howling because they hate DBGT since it's not as OMFG H4RDC0R3!!!1ONE!!!... THREE MONTHS BEFORE IT'S EVEN ON SHELVES. Come on.
The box itself is the same as the DBZ sets, although it is a few millimeters longer vertically, so it doesn't sit flush with the DBZ sets on a shelf. The booklet inside has some character biographies and short episode summaries. There is no "About the Transfer" blurb on the back of the booklet as there was on the back of the DBZ set booklets.
The transfer on here is pretty much on par with the DBZ remasters. Not a lot of spots or scratches to be found. There isn't any evidence of compression here even though they squeezed 34 episodes on 5 discs instead of the usual 6, so I was impressed. You are unable to switch the visuals to the original Japanese, so you're stuck seeing the "comical" Funimation episode titles.
The standard audio track is the 5.1 English dub with original Japanese audio, and they remade the opening track. Instead of the horrid rap track they originally made, they had Vic Mignogna sing the original Japanese track in English. Even if you switch the audio track to the US broadcast version, you will still hear this remade track. The rap version is nowhere to be found. The Japanese track is in mono as always.
Extras (on the 5th disc) are pretty sparse, following the recent DBZ box sets. You can see clean opening and ending videos as well as some trailers for upcoming releases, although they are a little dated. The Dragonball Z trailer is for Season Seven, which released last month. You'd think they would use the most recent trailer for Season Eight instead.
The set includes episodes 1-34 (Black Star and the majority of the Baby sagas), so it encompasses all of the "Lost Episodes" that were originally released out of order. The next box set, featuring SS4 Gogeta on the front, will include the last half of the series as well as the special "A Hero's Legacy" to wrap up the series. No release date was shown on the trailer.
Equipment used: XBOX360 Elite connected via HDMI to a 37" JVC Genessa 1080P television.

As of the writing of this review, the Gundam 00 movie is not yet released on bluray, so I will review the movie itself.
I managed to see a copy of the orignal film in english subtitles a few months after it was released in theatres in Japan. This film follows up directly after the 2nd season of the 00 TV series bringing back all the characters you know & love/hate from the TV series to follow a new threat. This section is spoilers so if you don't want to read, then close this review.
While the first and second seasons of Gundam 00 focused on the efforts of the Gundam Meisters to end all conflict between nations on Earth and unify humanity for the 'dialogues to come' (I put this is quotes because it's referenced several times in the TV series) the film fast forwards a couple years in the future and addresses the true purpose behind these 'dialogues'.
Following the conclusion of the 00 TV series, humanity is starting to manifest it's next stage of evolution, namely the Innovators, of which Setsuna was one of the first. With the human population showing signs of next stage humanity, it attracts the attention of long dormant alien lifeforms of unknown origin and purpose, who seemingly attack humanity for no reason. Dubbed the 'ELS' the unifed Earth Federation forces ready themselves for an upcoming war with these mysterious alien life forms with whom communication seems impossible but the Gundam Meisters, now reunited with the Ptolemias crew seek to combat and find the truth behind the meaning of this new alien presence.
Yes so its a Gundam story that features aliens and long time or even recent fans of the Gundam franchise might get their otaku undies in a bunch because Gundam has always been about people vs people, not people vs space aliens. Still as non-traditional Gundam 00 has been, I thought this was a fine and original direction for the story to go and while the plot is not without it's faults I felt it to be a solid story with more development of existing characters that you know and love and interestingly, minimal introduction of brand new characters. Most interesting I found was the evolution of Graham Acker from loser villian, to masked obsessed rival, to finally a sempai character of sorts especially to Setsuna and it's touching where his character arch leads to.
Animation quality, it's simply gorgeous if lacking in details but that's always been the visual design aesthetic of 00 and consistent with the TV series, just done with a higher budget, so I'll give it a pass. In addition to the cel animation, this film uses extensive CG animation which melds pretty well with the cel
Soundtrack and music was solid befitting a theatrical release.
Introduction of new Gundam mobile suits are done, but frankly these designs just get weirder and more alien with each iteration, so mecha fans maybe a little dissapointed.
Still it's a good story that provides a solid and satisfying conclusion to the Gundam 00 Universe and has a more hopeful and optimistic tone than a lot of Gundam chapters of late. This is a very sci-fi Gundams series and the film captures this tone well.
I'm definitely buying this film once it's released on bluray
For a solid and comprehensive fan review of the Gundam 00 TV series and film, check out the anime mecha podcast Gundam! @ MAHQ with SBR & the Crew, you won't regret it.
Edit: I've now received an advance sale copy of the bluray disc from Bandai Ent at the Anime Expo convention and sat down and watched the disc:
Video: Excellent 1080p video transfer, as expected for such a new film.
Audio: Both Japanese (which I prefer) and English (for those who can't read subtitles) audio tracks and both languages have separate 5.1 ch Dolby True HD and Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks making for a total of 4 selectable audio tracks. Great dynamic range on my home theater system and voices for both languages same cast as the TV series.
BluRay extras: Special annoucement video, Extra Promo video, Theatrical and TV trailers (all japanese with english subs) and the mock trailer for the fake 'Celestial Being' movie shown in the movie (both english and japanese audio tracks).
Overall a great bluray release for a pretty good movie.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Part 2 (2010) Review

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Part 2 (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Japan, "Fullmetal Alchemist" (Hagane no Renkinjutushi) has been a popular long running anime and manga series created by mangaka Hiromu Arakawa. The original manga series was serialized in Square Enix's "Shonen Gangan" since 2001, while the 51-episode TV series created by BONES was shown on television in 2004 and was followed by a film to conclude the series.
The popularity of "Fullmetal Alchemist" has led to many novels, OVA's, drama CD's, soundtracks and video games and a lot of these releases have been distributed in various countries and its popularity is a testament of how people have come to love the series which has won many awards in Japan including being voted for the #1 most popular anime series of all time.
Despite it's popularity, the series could have gone on longer but because the anime series was created when the manga was only several years old, the anime series only lasted 51-episodes and there were differences between what the director featured on the anime series and what Arakawa had in the manga.
So, in 2009, a new series titled "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" (Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Furumetaru Arukemisuto) was created by BONES and this time around, the series would follow the manga much more closely. Currently there are over 60 episodes that have aired in Japan and the series is still ongoing. Also, unlike the previous anime series, this series would be created in HD (540p). The first 13 episodes of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" would feature its first 13-episodes covering the first 26-episodes from the original anime series but from that point on, the series becomes a whole new storyline which features more characters and for the most part, something new and different for the viewers, especially fans of the original series.
To make sure that there is a difference between this series aside from the storyline differences compared to the original, the staff is different this time around as well as the character designs. The director for "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" would be Yasuhiro Irie (who worked on RahXephon", "Cowboy Bebop", "Macross Plus", "Gunparade March"), series composition by Hiroshi Ohnogi ("Eureka Seven", "Area 88, "Aquarion", "RahXephon", "RIN", "Skullman"), music by Akira Senju ("Red Garden", "Mobile Suit Victory Gundam", "Silent Service"), character designs by Hiroki Kanno ("Angelic Layer", "Eureka Seven", "Ninja Scroll", "RahXephon") and art design by Takeshi Satou ("Mobile Suit Gundam 00', "Ghost Slayers Ayashi", "Please Twins!").
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" is a series about two young alchemist brothers named Edward and his younger brother Alphonse Eric (aka "Al"). Their father left them and several months after their father left, an epidemic hit their village and killed their mother. Grieving and alone without their mother, the two quickly tried to hone their alchemist skills and hope to bring their mother back alive by using a human transmutation (this is illegal and considered taboo by alchemist).
While performing the transmutation, a dark shadow comes and literally breaks apart the body of Alphonse and as for Edward, he is shown "the truth" but in return for doing the transmutation, there is a toll and in this case, he loses his legs and feet and his right arm. And the transmutation to bring their mother fails as Edward was only able to revive a disembodied figure. In a short time allowed before the dark shadow leaves, Edward was able to bond Al's soul to a suit of armor but there are some consequences. And these consequences and guilt have plunged Edward to the lowest he had ever been.
Meanwhile, a military figure named Roy Mustang has come and is shocked to see that Edward was able to survive a human transmutation and also anchoring his brother's soul and thus gives Edward a chance to join the military to fight with them but at the same time, gaining access that may give Edward a chance to bring his brother back to life and also his own body as well.
With this opportunity, this gives Edward a chance to repair what he did wrong and help his brother. But as they investigate on how they can get their bodies back and investigating what is known as a "Philosopher's Stone", an unknown group is out there, observing his every move and willing to kill in order to get to Edward.
In part two of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood", the story begins to focus on the military encounter with the Homunculi, the investigation of Hughes death and Winry coming face-to-face with the murderer who killed her parents.
VIDEO:
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Part Two" is presented in 1080p HD 16×9 via a HD native source. It's important to note that although the conversion was made to 1080p, I've read that the actual Japanese original masters were created in 540p. With that being said, this is a TV series and one can't expect OVA or film quality but I manage to compare the DVD and Blu-ray version and the Blu-ray looks much more colorful, much more detailed and looked much better and more colorful than its DVD counterpart.
I did notice edge enhancement and I'm sure the conversion of a 540p source to 1080p possibly led to the jaggies that can be seen at times. Granted, I'm a bit picky when it comes to video quality but the fact that this is created by BONES (a busy anime production company) and the fact that this is not an OVA or film, for a TV series, "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" looks very good. Granted, it's not uber-vibrant but there is a good amount of shading, detail, blacks are deep and overall, I felt the Blu-ray looked much better than its DVD counterpart.
AUDIO:
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Part Two" is presented in English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and in Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0. Overall, the 5.1 lossless soundtrack sounds very good and there is a good amount of surround usage and its much more immersive than its Japanese lossless counterpart. There is quite a bit of action in this second volume, plenty of battles are featured and many episodes that utilize the surround channels.
The Japanese lossless soundtrack is still good, especially if you have a receiver in which you can change the setting to stereo on all channels. I do prefer the Japanese lossless soundtrack in terms of acting especially during the more emotional moments in this second volume (which there are many). But I've watched the series in both Japanese and English and for the most part, both are well done and similar to "Dragon Ball Z" and "One Piece", the English dub has caught my attention and this time around, I was watching many of the episodes in English. But both voice acting are well done.
Subtitles are in English.
NOTE: You can not use your audio button to switch from Japanese to English and vice versa while watching the series. You will need to press your guide button to switch to another audio. Also, you can not optionally remove English subtitles unless you choose the English lossless soundtrack. So, for those who want to watch the series in Japanese with no English subtitles may be disappointed by this.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Part Two" comes with the following special features:
* EPISODE 14 Commentary - Audio commentary by Mike McFarland (ADR Director/Line Director and voice of Havoc) and voice talents Chris Patton (Greed) and Vic Mignona (Edward Elric) talking about reprising their role for "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood).
* EPISODE 23 Commentary - Audio commentary by ADR director and voice talent Mike McFarland (Havoc) and English Dub voice talents Todd Haberkorn (Ling Yao), Monica Rial (May Chang), Trina Nishimura (Lan Fan).
* Textless Opening and Closing Songs - The textless opening and ending theme songs.
* Trailers - FUNimation Entertainment trailers.
JUDGMENT CALL:
Like the first part of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood", there is a good amount of episodes that will make you laugh and even make you want to shed some tears as not only does the series feature a good amount of action, fun and upbeat moments but also heartbreaking episodes. Especially those dealing with Ed and Al's realization of what happened to their good friend Hughes and when we see Winry confront the man who killed her parents. Heartbreaking scenes but definitely added to the enjoyment of this series.
Aside from the more emotional scenes, the battle between the military and the homunculi is starting to ramp up and we get to see a number of awesome battles between the military and the Homunculi and also an introduction to Lin Yao, Lan Fan, May Chang and also a confrontation with the murderer Scar.
If anything, while the first series was more or less trying to jam pack a lot of story (that people saw in the first series) in its first 13 episodes, this time around the storyline becomes much more focused on what took place on the manga series. More character development was needed on the military characters and the writers have done a wonderful job in including more scenes with Roy Mustang, Jean Havoc, Riza Hawkeye and also on the newer characters Ling Yao, Lan Fan and May Chang. As well as showcasing the homunculi and what they are capable of.
I really enjoyed part two of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" and how well-paced, how action-packed and how much deeper the episodes were. This latest volume was quite addicting and I definitely enjoy how the series has continued to grow and improve with each episode.
As for the Blu-ray release, as explained with my review for the first volume, some people may have issues that this series is not true 1080p but created in 540p and then upscaled to...Read more›
