This was a really beautifully shot piece. The narration by F. Murray is pretty cool, and he doesn't dumb it down. You really learn a lot in addition to getting to take in the cool scenery. It looked ridiculously good-- almost photorealistic-- on my Blu-ray player and HD TV. I totes recommend 100%.

Castaway Cowboy (1974) Review

Castaway Cowboy (1974)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the early '70's, James Garner made two films for Disney studios, "One Little Indian" and "The Castaway Cowboy." Of the two, "Cowboy" is by far the best: a slight but entertaining little comedy-western co-starring the lovely Vera Miles (who was also in "Indian"). She plays Henrietta McAlvoy, the owner of a failing Hawaiian (known here as the Sandwich Islands) potato plantation whose native workers fish a nearly drowned deserter named Costain (Garner) out of the ocean. While Costain waits for a ship home to Texas, he hatches a plot to save the farm by turning it into a cattle ranch, using the Hawaiian workers as ranch hands. Of course, in Disney films of the era, there is always a villain, and "Cowboy" features Robert Culp as Bryson, a local businessman who romances Henrietta in order to get her land and when she won't sell, stoops to some nasty business to sabotage Garner's plan.
Everything is predictable and ends just like you think it might. Also quite predictably, Henrietta is a widow with an irrepressibly cute (i.e. cloying and obnoxious) preteen son played by "The Poseidon Adventure"'s young Eric Shea, who gives an even more annoying, don't-say-your-line-shout-it performance than he gave in the previous film. The only other performances of note are given by native Hawaiians playing the workers as stereotypes who exist merely as goofballs to be laughed at. (More about that later.) Only Elizabeth Smith as Henrietta's housekeeper escapes with her dignity intact, since she manages to make her character more than a one-note stereotype.
Finally, about Anchor Bay's DVD presentation. Even though the copy I received was in fullscreen format (instead of the advertised widescreen--grumble, grumble) I kept it because of the excellent remastered print and the addition of a cool copy of the original poster art from the 1974 release on the back of the scene breakdown card. I still would prefer widescreen, but at least the picture and sound are much better than the awful transfers Disney have been ripping us off with on its own lazy releases.
Now, a word of warning about the presentation of the native Hawaiian characters: if you are sensitive about racial issues and potential racism in the movies, you may want to steer clear of this film. The Hawaiian workers are stereotyped as lazy and undisciplined men-children who would rather swim and play than work. This fact may make the film as offensive to some as "Song of the South" is to African-Americans. However, the natives do become better, more competent workers by the end of the film, so proceed at your own risk!

Elvis Presley: Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966) Review

Elvis Presley: Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A sort of repeat of "Blue Hawaii", but "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" shows more exotic locations. Only this time around Elvis takes you by air. He stars as a handsome unemployed helicopter pilot who decides to open his own helicopter tourist service with his partner. Along the way, Elvis can't keep several beautiful wahinis out of his hair. "Is this any way to run an airline?" You bet! With one look at this movie, you'll see it's not called "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" for nothing. The young child costar Donna Butterworth was a huge Elvis fan before she starred in this picture with Elvis. Why not? A little girl who loved Elvis to death and now she's doing a motion picture with him in person. You could call it a dream come true. Elvis fans, don't delay.

Lilo & Stitch 2-Disc Big Wave Edition (2002) Review

Lilo and Stitch 2-Disc Big Wave Edition (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A heartwarming, moving and beautifully animated Walt Disney film get its special DVD treatment in a brand new 2-Disc Big Wave Edition.
In 2002, Walt Disney's 42nd animated feature from the Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida studio would become a commercial success with over $35 million in its first weekend and eventually would make over $273 million worldwide. Since 2002, the animated film has received several direct-to-video film releases and even a cartoon series.
With the original DVD release back in 2002, in 2003 a 2-disc DVD release was announced but was delayed. Fans of the film have waited for the 2-disc version for years and the question many who own the original DVD may be asking, is this 2-disc release worth it?
If you are a big fan of the animated film, then the answer is a resounding...YES!!!
VIDEO & AUDIO:
"Lilo & Stitch" is a beautiful, animated film that takes place in Hawaii. So, this animated film definitely showcases a variety of colors of the island and the Hawaiian clothing and lush lands and beautiful beach. Personally, I would love to see a Blu-ray Disc treatment of this film because it's a type of film that would benefit in 1080p. But overall, the picture quality of the DVD is vibrant with colors and the animation had a distinct character designs and overall, beautiful to look at.
The video is presented with an aspect ratio of (1:66:1) and is enhanced for 16×9 televisions.
As for the audio, audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and also includes French and Spanish language tracks. The audio utilizes the rear channels during the action segments and also musically, the music plays a big part in the film. Although not a musical but a dialogue-based film, overall, "Lilo & Stitch" utilizes the speaker channels with the front channel showcasing the dialogue and musical tracks with the rear channels utilizing various background sounds, ambient sounds and also booms and crashes during the action scenes.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
This is where the 2-Disc Big Wave Edition of "Lilo & Stitch" shines. There are tons of special features on disc 1 and a length documentary and deleted/edited scenes in disc 2. Included are:
Disc 1:

A very informative commentary as Sanders and DeBlois talked about how there were some major changes from the original storyline and the final cut. Discussions of going to Hawaii, meeting with talent like Tia Carrere and how Hawaiian music came to play in the film and also the ending flight chase scenes and how it was changed due to 9/11. A lot of informative tid-bits on the creation of the film. Cool commentary!
* Deleted Scenes - This featurette features how the storyboard artists and artists teaching the viewer how to draw Po and each member of the Furious Five via sketching the characters one-by-one. For example, with Po, the artist would start off with two circles and explain by detail of drawing the rest of the body and features. Each segment varies in time but most are around 6 minutes long. Very informative.

Disc 2:
* Documentary - Around 2 hours and five minutes long is a documentary from the beginning in 1997 (planning stages) up to the end of premiering at Cannes Film Festival and it's nationwide premiere in 2002. This documentary was great! Many interviews with the producer Clark Spencer, directors/writers Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, Disney Chairman Roy E. Disney, Disney President Tom Schumaker, Executive Vice President Pam Coats, Animating Supervisor Alex Kundershchmidt, Visual Effects Supervisor Joe Giland, the voice talent, crew behind-the-scenes and much more. * Deleted Scenes and Early Version Scenes - There were considerable amount of changes during "Lilo & Stitch" from its original treatment to the final cut. The deleted scenes include the airplane through the city scene which was scrapped due to the events that happened on 9/11 and thus the crew changing the chase scene to two space crafts in air. The following deleted scenes are featured: Stitch's Trail, Gantu's Challenge, The Untimely Death of Pudge the Fish, Bedtime Story, The 747 Sequence and three early version scenes: Model Citizen- Mayhem on the Beach, Jumba Attacks and The 747 Sequence with Stitch's Gang.
JUDGMENT CALL:
"Lilo and Stitch" was a wonderful animated film and who can't deny the cuteness and the wit of the latest duo from Disney, Hawaiian girl Lilo and her little alien pet Stitch. These two characters are so unlike any Disney characters with Lilo who comes from literally a broken home, her older sister Nani trying to make ends meet as the guardian of Lilo after the death of their parents and just to watch how their life has been personally affected. Stitch is unlike any Disney character that we have seen. He is quite mischievous and eats his snot, how crazy is that?
The character of Lilo is full of vitality but because her parents are deceased and having to stay at home while her sister works and the family not exactly having a lot of money, she wants to fit in with the other girls but it just doesn't happen that easily.
And the relationship between Lilo & Stitch was just enjoyable to watch. Stitch brings joy into her life despite being a bit troublesome, but Lilo is somewhat similar and thus starts to grow up now that she has the responsibility of taking care of her pet. As for Stitch, being raised to be this weapon of destruction, he learns from Lilo that being part of a family is very important and like the story of "Ugly Duckling", Lilo embraces him with open arms and he learns how relationships mean to him. Love rather than destruction.
Combined with a beautiful, colorful and lush setting of Hawaii, the art and animation department did a great job capturing Hawaii all the way up to the movements of the hulu dancing.Overall, this film was just fun to watch and it's also great to watch this film again and watching a Disney animated film that were hand drawn using CGI but a film not entirely 3D which many of the animated Disney films are of late.
When "Lilo & Stitch" was released into theaters, I have to admit that I was very happy because America would get a second animated film from Disney that would feature a lead and supporting character that is Asian. "Mulan" was fun but it was a period film taking place during the Chinese Dynasty, "Lilo & Stich" on the other hand, this is an entirely different animated film with it's own style thanks to the characters and the overall setting. This is just an enjoyably fun and entertaining film...Read more›

I first saw this movie on a plane coming back from Oahu, Hawaii. I am really impressed by how the movie conveys the history of Hawaii and what it was like before it became so commercialized. I recommend this film for anyone who truly loves the beauty and history of Hawaii. There is some great surfing too! The movie explains the origins of Duke and how he shaped the sport of surfing. Now when I go to Duke's (restaurant) I understand his role and how important he is to the Hawaiian people. Rent it!

Magnum, P.I. - The Complete First Season (1980) Review

Magnum, P.I. - The Complete First Season (1980)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you were around to watch the original Magnum TV series, you already know whats in this. I watched the original series during my high school years and sitting down and watching the series again reminds me not only of those times, but of how good the show was.
If you never watched the original show, let me just say that introducing yourself to Magnum and his pals would be well worth your time. This is the ultimate "buddy" show. The dynamic that evolves between the main characters is a rare pleasure to watch. Some of the episodes (The two parter called "Ivan" jumps to mind... but that will have to wait for later season releases)are particularly well done and have some amazing moments.
Of course, there are going to be some stinkers mixed in there. But to be honest, they are particularly few and far between.
One of the best elements of the show is the relationship between Magnum and Higgins. Its the classic love/hate deal with a level of mutual respect that sustains a very funny back and forth of gotchas between the two.
Once all the seasons have been released, and you watch that final episode with Magnum walking off into the sunset in his dress whites on the beach with his daughter in hand, you mill most likely wonder three things. First, when will they make a movie so we can all see what happens next. Second, did Rick or didn't he? Finally, you will be just a bit jealous that we can't all have the kind of friendships that Magnum, TC, Rick and Higgins share.
Of course, there is the technical side of the DVD. Frankly, I was not too optimistic about the likely quality of the video. I am happy to report that the transfer to DVD is just about as clean as anyone could possibly hope for. I am watching the DVD on a 50" rear projection LCD TV. So any quality problems with the image would be particularly obvious. Also, my DVD player is an older Toshiba model. No progressive scan or any of the other common quality boost features you find in newer decks. The bottom line is that there is no reason to be concerned in any way about the quality of the transfer, it's top notch.
So take the time to introduce yourself to Magnum and his friends, you won't regret it.

Girls Guns & G-Strings (2011) Review

Girls Guns and G-Strings (2011)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you know B movies then the title of my review should tell you everything you need to know. All of these films were either directed or produced by Andy Sidaris. These films all feature dead pan serious delivery while demonstrating some of the most ridiculous and over the top plots, dialogue and action. You must not under any circumstances attempt to take these films seriously or elicit any deep meaning from them. You'll just strain yourself. These are B movies made for fun. If you can let yourself go with the flow, you'll find yourself having a good time with this collection.
Here's what your green buys you.
THE DALLAS CONNECTION: I don't know what the Connection is, I'm not really sure it's even mentioned in the movie. But a team of gorgeous assassins is wiping out a group of scientists who possess some dangerous secret. Only one scientist remains and it's up to Samantha Phillips and her fellow agents to save them. There are some wacky death scenes, and a nice "Basic Instinct" style beginning which features the leader of the murderous trio, Julie Strain.
DAY OF THE WARRIOR: The Legion to Ensure Total Harmony and Law (L.E.T.H.A.L.) is hunting an evil genius known as The Warrior. Warrior's turn ons include diamond smuggling, porn and art theft. Best line in the movie is spoken by Julie Strain's character Willow Black;"I worked at Disneyland. I was one of the rides." Gerald Okamura plays a martial arts master named Fu. You will recognize him from Big Trouble in Little China, among many other roles.
DO OR DIE: This is the silliest movie in the Sidaris oeuvre. You've got Mr.Miyagi as an Asian criminal mastermind and Eric Estrada...period. Miyagi sends several teams of assassins after our fair ladies and R rated hijinx ensue. The colorful assassins remind me of the killers sent after Peter Sellers in The Pink Panther Strikes Again.
ENEMY GOLD: Now this is a great one! Evil assassins hassle our heroes whilst they're looking for Quantrill's Lost Civil War gold! There are historical flashbacks and characters named Jewel Panther and Becky Midnight. What's not to like?
FIT TO KILL: There's something going on here about a rare missing Russian diamond, but once you see Julie Strain working out on a balcony you'll forget about things like "Plot". For extra fun though there's a cool helicopter battle.
GUNS: Is this a sexy feminist comedy or a feminist sex comedy? I dunno that's too much thinkin' for me. It's also got Erik Estrada, Danny Trejo, oil wrestling and hand grenades. Sounds like a great week in Vegas.
HARD HUNTED: You can't spell PLOT without a T and an A....well... Anyway we have another of Andy Sidaris' version of Charlie's Angels for Men. The girls need to track down a nuclear detonator or blah-ditty-blah-blah-blah.
HARD TICKET TO HAWAII: The evil Dr. Chang plans on destroying the economy of Hawaii and only super-agents Donna and Taryn and their pet mutant snake can stop him. This cultural and intellectual extravaganza features blow up dolls, razor tipped Frisbees and skate-boarding thugs.
MALIBU EXPRESS: This is sort of a down home Burt Reynolds type movie except it happens at the beach, and stars an 80's porn star/surfer dude, Sybil Danning and a red Delorean.
PICASSO TRIGGER: A cool title but probably one of the least of Sidaris' films. A bad guy tries to ice all the agents involved in his brother's death.
SAVAGE BEACH: Smoking hot Agents Donna and Taryn wander around a humid jungle in tiny tops looking for lost treasure. They run into an old Japanese soldier who still thinks WW2 is going on and a bunch of baddies also looking for the treasure. Plenty of action but for me not quite enough wacky humor.
RETURN TO SAVAGE BEACH: The Ladies of LETHAL try to recover a lost treasure before a hoard of bad guys can snag it. This one has plenty of skimpy outfits, hot actresses, bad dialogue and explosions but it's not as wacky or fun as many of Sidaris' earlier films.

Coming Soon Erotic Grindhouse Trailers From The 70's Review

Coming Soon Erotic Grindhouse Trailers From The 70's
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wish someone had already reviewed this. But now at least I can help others understand what they are buying here. If you have a trailer collection and you like the unusual, weird and shocking trailers of the grindhouse 70s, this is NOT IT. This is not really typical grindhouse, this is outright porno trailers. If you want an amusing collection of trailers, definitely get the Something Weird Video collection... even the erotic trailers are amusing, silly fun in SWV's "Extra Weird Sampler".
But these trailers in this collection are not silly or amusing... it is nothing but nasty porno... like the films your buddies brought to your bachelor party from the XXX store back in the 80s. How many times can you see the male appendage "erupt" without getting ill. I fast forward skipped through title after title, and that is 85% of what is on this trailer collection so far... I could only stand it for about 30 trailers. Especially don't buy it and sit down with your wife or girlfriend and expect to have a few laughs together... unless you think having a skull shaped like a frying pan will give you a certain "apparence sophistiquée".
So... if countless trailers for stag films is what you're looking for... (and if it is, you need to get a life!) then you don't want to be fooled into thinking this is "grindhouse erotica". It's really the stag films the XXX movie house in the nasty part of town was playing in the 80s. My copy will end up in its well-deserved new home... my trash can, far away from my DVD collection of trailers.
