Wake in Fright ( Outback ) Review

(More customer reviews)I came across a description of this film a while ago which made it sound like an overwrought B Picture, a format to accurately represent the world it depicts - melodramatic, crude and brash. It is much more than that. From the opening 360' panning shot around the tiny wooden platform of an Australian outback station, taking in two shabby and rusting buildings dwarfed by an endless vista of red sand, to the brilliant portraits of a range of characters who inhabit this barren and malevolent landscape, it constantly surprises and delights with visual power and human complexity. It is no surprise to discover that the underlying material on which the film is based, a novel by Kenneth Cook, was to have been a project for Dirk Bogarde and Joseph Losey at one point in its development. The film ended in the extremely capable hands of Ted Kotcheff and screenwriter Evan Jones and is beautifully constructed and paced. There is throughout a sense of threat and a sustained tension, but the tensions are those that exist within the central character and which this environment magnifies into threats - they are never simply imposed in a mechanistic fashion. Apparently the film was initially very well received, being lauded at the Cannes Film Festival and achieving some degree of commercial success in certain markets, but in Australia it was seen understandably as a fierce critique of the country and its dominant ethos at a sensitive time and so it disappeared seemingly for ever. The DVD is the result of a long search by the original editor who managed to unearth cans of footage in a warehouse in Philadelphia after many years of fruitless effort - and we should all be extremely grateful to him for preserving and restoring such an important and seminal work of the Australian New Wave.

Jessica Sinclaire's Confessions of a Lonely Wife (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)the title speaks for itself. from beginning to end this movie was crap.storyline was poor.acting the pits. basically it begins with the husband getting killed (it's not revealed at first who killed him), the wife giving her story about her husband(an unscrupulous record producer) who screws everything in a dress and embezzles money from his recording company, she knowing about his affairs and stupidly stays married to him in spite of, and finally when he elevates to beating her that's when he gets killed by the wife's cousin, (the revelation comes at the end of the movie ) who was also sleeping with the guy unknown to the wife. In the end we see the wife getting a hold of all the money the husband embezzled and on the day of hubby's funeral, we see the wife getting killed by her cousin and said money being stolen by the cousin who was apparently jealous because the wife was "skinny,beautiful,rich" and had the life she wanted.
It was a dumb movie don't waste money to buy it online, wait for it from a dvd club or something.

The Little Cars in the Great Race (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this movie for my son who is 2 1/2 years old. Ever since he saw the movie "The Cars", all he wants to play with is any cars with eyes. Plus he keeps on wanting to go see the movie. So when I saw this dvd I decided to buy it for him, since the dvd for "The Cars" won't be out for a long time. The movie is not like "The Cars" at all. The computer graphics are terrible. And sometimes the lips of the cars are not in sync with the voice. But beside all that.....MY SON LOVES THE MOVIE! He wants to watch it all the time. The movie does have cars with eyes and it will keep him occupied until the real movie comes out. Overall it is satisfactory. I would recommend it for anyone who has a 2 year old child who loves cars.

The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green brings to life Eric Ormer's long-running comic strip of the same name. Although it took a lot of choices to create an eighty-eight minute movie out of sixteen years of comic strips, the result does capture the social whirl, the promise, and the despair of Ethan Green's life.
Ethan Green (Daniel Letterle) is a 26-year old gay man who has joined with lesbian Charlotte (Shanola Hampton) to rent a house from Ethan's old heart-throb Leo (David Monahan). Ethan has just started a fling with a married, just-out-of-the-closet baseball player, Kyle (Diego Sorrano). When Leo decides to sell the house, Ethan gets a suggestion from cute 19-year old Punch (Dean Shelton) to use the services of depressed Sunny Deal (Rebecca Lowman) to delay any sale. Ethan and others get advice from Ethan's mom (Meredith Baxter) and the two Hat Sisters (Richard Riehle and Joel Brooks). Meanwhile Leo may have developed an interest in a Log Cabin Republican, and Kyle may like Jason Chang. Ethan's tendency to push people away if they get too close sets yo-yo relationships into action. It all resolves happily enough, although Ethan has the opportunity to spoil things enough to generate a sequel.
Since this is a lower-budget production, there was little opportunity to illustrate the science-fiction sorts of themes that were in the strip. To offset this, Eric Ormer was able to create an animated cartoon sequence illuminating one character.
The acting was pretty good overall. I thought the Hat Sisters and Ethan's mother were exactly as they were in the comics. Ethan here is nicer and more passive than in the comics. He is cruised but doesn't cruise, he can resist having sex even when his angel allows it, and he relies on advice to initiate action. In the strip, Ethan is frequently depressed or hostile; in the film Ethan slows down some to consider matters but doesn't get into a funk, other than one scene with Charlotte where he repeatedly calls his own behavior self-destructive. The movie is happy with a dash of farce. It's not a problem or unprecedented, just a choice.
Skin shots are plentiful. Ethan has the most, but Kyle, Punch, Leo, and Juarez (Ramon de Ocampo), an ex of Ethan living with his mother, get to show off too.
The extras are a commentary track by the director, screenwriter, and executive producer, an alternative opening scene with optional commentary, the trailer, a short featurette by Eric Orner giving the history of the comic strip, and some other trailers. You might check out Orner's Ethan Green comic books in the book section too.
The film is able to link many of the traditional brief strips together into a coherent story arc. Fans of the comic strip need not hesitate. People not familiar with the strip will not be disadvantaged. Go for it.

Fastlane - The Complete Series (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)First let me say that I am a huge fan of Fastlane. I signed all the silly petitions to bring it back on air, to bring it to DVD, and so on. If I knew what they were going to do to the show for the DVD release, I would've kept my mouth shut.
First and foremost, the DVD release does not contain the same music as the aired series. Let that sink in.
So in the pilot episode, you aren't treated to The Vines, Limp Bizkit, and N.E.R.D. as you were on television, but rather some nameless hack band spouting generic platitudes about being "hip". This is ironic, considering the point of the show is to be bombastic and authentic. Instead we get the audio equivalent of "white socks and a Corolla," to quote the show. They don't even have the theme song for the opening credits.
Even worse, the DVD isn't widescreen. This would be fine if the show was originally aired fullscreen. But it was aired in widescreen. This is baffling. I get the music thing; it takes money to re-license tracks. But why not widescreen?
The show would get a 5-star rating, but the poor quality of the DVD is what gets 1 star. It's sad when the pirated version of the show that fans have been keeping on their hard drives for all these years is of superior quality to the trash I just paid money for. Get your act together, Warner Brothers.

Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales (Two Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Review

(More customer reviews)For those of you who do not have the Disney Channel, Mater's Tall Tales are five minute CGI animated shorts based on characters from Pixar's Cars. They are about the tow truck, Mater, regaling his friends on his numerous (and outrageously unrealistic) adventures such as meeting a UFO, being a world famous bullfighter, professional wrestler or daredevil, and other crazy situations. These shorts always fall back on the same joke where Lightning McQueen challenges Mater's tale as being true and Mater replying with, "Don't you remember? You was there too", which ends with McQueen being in the thick of the tall tale.
The animation quality is on par with the movie. Plus you get appearances of other Cars characters like Sally, Red, Mia and Tia and more. They even get just about all of the original actors to do the voiceovers with the notable exception of Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen (replaced by veteran voice talent Keith Ferguson). All in all a fun little cartoon to fill time between shows on Disney.
This Blu-Ray collects all of the shorts ever released and a couple that haven't come out yet. This totals nine cartoons, so it's not exactly a large amount of content at about 40 minutes. You do, however, get about 50 minutes of additional features to whet your whistle. Here's a list of the bonus stuff:
Paths to Pixar - Similar featurette to the ones on other Pixar collections this has interviews with Pixar artists, editors and such and gives insights on their experiences and other career details.
Studio Stories: McQueen Has No Hands - The challenges of manipulating a map when your character doesn't have any hands.
Mater: Bumper to Bumper - Goes into detail about the creation of Mater and how he is animated.
Making of Mater's Tall Tales - Self Explanatory. Documentary on creating the Mater shorts from conception to finished product.
Unmade Tales - Some of the ideas that didn't make it to production. Each one has an intro by Director Rob Gibbs and are pitched by the story artist. Tales include Runway Mater, Stunt Mater, Backwards to the Forwards, Car-nival and Import Mater.
Cars Toons Story Reels - Mater the Greater, Unidentified Flying Mater and Mater Private Investigator all shown in their conformed storyreels shown against the final audio track. You also have a picture in picture option to see both the reel and the finished product.
Cars Land Sneak Peek - Just as it says you get to see the upcoming Disney California Adventure attraction Cars Land. Mainly behind the scenes stuff.
If you love the movie Cars and/or the Mater shorts then of course this is the disk for you. Makes me wonder if they will re-release the Toy Story Treats that were done in 1996 somewhere on a Blu-Ray collection. Just keep in mind you are paying for about 90 minutes of content including all of the bonus features. It's a short disk.

Baby Einstein - On the Go - Riding, Sailing and Soaring (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)my son is 18 months old and has just been allowed to start watching the baby einstein videos--he loves neighborhood animals and world animals and asks for them daily (we watch either "ducks!" or "growls!" once a day). after a trip on an airplane over thanksgiving, we decided to get On The Go for him to mix it up a little...
there are indeed good things about this video, but these good things are also encased in bad:
1. lots of different vehicles--probably too many different ones, in fact...do we need both a 'sailBOARD' AND a 'sailBOAT' in the same segment?
2. loads of BRIGHT colors--but this video has more computer images than 'real life' puppets...the opening segment with the raccoon driving the car over the bright green CG road is a bit much and feels like something from an austin powers movie
3. the music in this video has an eerie/music box quality to parts of it--the music that accompanies the spinning wheel (which has a car, a plane, a boat and a train on it) is very mellow and tinkly and then the same tune is repeated at various times throughout the video...yes, it's a classical tune BUT it's a watered down, synthesizer version and that just doesn't cut it.
4. lots of repetition--i.e., the opening sequence features an eye-level shot of a boy riding in a toy car that's pushed by a girl...you see this same footage about 5 minutes later in the 'on the land' segment.
overall, this is a decent dvd (i'm not going to bash it for all of the frontloaded garbage that you have to fast-forward through to get to the real dvd...that's too easy--but suffice it to say it is a pain)--the train segment is great and the vehicles are pretty cool (there are tons of shots of various ones, too)...unlike Neighborhood Animals or World Animals, my son did not want to watch this one straight through--and to me, that's a good thing.

Cars (Single-Disc Full Screen Edition) (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)When Cars first came out on DVD, I was a little disappointed because there weren't very many extras on it. I didn't understand why Pixar would take one of their most popular films and give it such a mediocre treatment. Well.....now that I have the Blu-ray version of this film, I think I know why. They were saving it all for Cars debut on hi-def. This has to be the best looking picture I have seen yet on a hi-def title. I looks almost like the entire film is in 3-D!!! I managed to catch part of this movie on a hi-def cable channel and thought I would compare the two pictures. After a little fiddling, I managed to get both screens at the exact same frame, and was blown away at how much clearer the Blu-ray picture is. The Cine-Explore feature on this is the best special feature I've seen on a hi-def title. It is almost sensory overload at the amount of material that continuously pops up across the screen while the film is playing. This disc will be the one I will pop in to show my friends what Blu-ray is capable of doing. Every Blu-ray owner needs to get this title. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
