Perhaps I'm a little biased because I absolutely LOVE Wood Harris but this was the first film I ever saw him in and I loved his performance in this movie. Not only was he SEXY as ever, but he was also sensitive, which is a side that is not often revealed by so-called rap artists (his role in the movie). Although I don't really like Gina Rivera (based on her role in Soul Food-the movie), I did like her performance in this movie and thought that the lead characters worked well together. This movie was intriguing, it kept me interested from start to finish and it's one of those movies that, while not Grammy award-winning, is a nice reprieve from the real world...especially the drama! This is one of my favorite all-time BET movies (this and Masquerade) and although so many people (surprisingly) gave it a bad review, I enjoyed watching it and will add it to my collection so that I can watch it anytime I want!

Chicken Run (2000) Review

Chicken Run (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Chicken Run" (the latest from Aardman Studios, the makers of the 'Wallace and Gromit' films) is simply the most delightful, visually amazing, and FUN animated movie since Disney's "The Lion King." Other studios (notably Warner Brothers) have tried to take a bite out of Disney's pie-share of the kid-movie market, but Aardman and Dreamworks have done it best in this charming, hilarious, and edge-of-your-seat thrilling animated fantasy about a group of hens trying to break out of a chicken farm. Running the farm with an evil eye and an iron ax are the villainous Mrs. Tweedie and her henpecked (literally) husband, who's sure those chickens are plotting escape. The voices are perfect, from Julia Sawalha and Joan Horrocks from "Absolutely Fabulous" as chickens to Mel Gibson as the "flying" rooster Rocky. I want to recommend that every parent take their kids to see this one: unlike many other recent cartoons, this one is completely suitable for all but the very youngest children (there's some tense moments in a chase at the end, and a little threatening to the chickens with an ax), but even better, this will delight and amuse the adults with its clever animation, perfect voice-casting, witty visual allusions to famous movies like "The Great Escape," "The Bridge over the River Kwai," and "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and Indiana Jones-type thrills that range from a chase inside an automatic chicken pie-making machine to a dramatic and climatic escape that is reminiscent of, but even improves on, the high-energy chase sequences of Aardman's "Wallace and Gromit" films. The moral lessons (you can succeed better with teamwork; stand by your friends) are pointed but gentle, without hitting kids over the head. I can't recommend this one highly enough, folks, whatever age you are. And if you head out of the theater and go eat a chicken pot pie, you have a much, much, harder heart than mine!

The Fine Art of Love Review

The Fine Art of Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a Borowczyk fan, I must say I enjoy The Art Of Love, although it may not be his best film. An ambitious ode to poet Ovid, one gets the feeling a larger budget would have been needed to get this done just right. Boro does his best with some nice soft focus and natural lighting, giving the proceedings an airy, glowing look similar to Behind Convent Walls and Emmanuelle 5. Sadly, the print used here gives it a washed out, at times over-exposed look. A film using soft-focus and unusual lighting definitely needed more care in the transfer, and much color correction.
Plotwise, it's basically the story of a handsome Roman general, his cheating wife and her young lover, a student of Ovid. There's a dream-like air of fantasy to the story, and the narrative takes a backseat to the visuals, intentionally I'd say. Performances by the talented and striking cast are hindered by sloppy dubbing, although the lovely score by Luis Bacalov adds much.
So I say, Borowczyk fans check it out... those looking for smut will find Art Of Love too arty and slow, historians probably a bit too pervy.

Cheeky (Uncut) ( Trasgredire ) ( Transgressions )

This movie was my initiation to the films of Tinto Brass. I rented it on a whim not knowing what to expect. In all fairness, I'd have to say that it is at least VERY erotic, and on the verge of softcore porn. Its fun and harmless though. The lead acress, Yuliya Mayarchuk, is very cute and likeable in this movie. The storyline is about what you might expect for the type of movie. While it is a little more in-depth than an X-rated movie, it still is a relatively lightly written premise. Definitely not intended for someone looking for a thought provoking or insightful movie.
But in any case, it is fun and not without its charms. Very sexy, enjoyable and light-hearted comedy with lots of nudity!! I recommend it.

Sodom and Gomorrah (Sodoma e Gomorra) (The Last Days of Sodom and Gomorrah) Review

Sodom and Gomorrah (Sodoma e Gomorra) (The Last Days of Sodom and Gomorrah)
Average Reviews:

Amazon's listings, normally accurate to a fault, erroneously tag this item as "full screen." In fact it's widescreen, 1.85 or 1.78, it's hard to tell, and the jewel case itself only states (in English) "Letterbox." So it's the original theatrical release aspect ratio. Don't worry about its being a Brazilian pressing: the language is English, the opening titles are English, everything English. Only the jewel case text is in Portuguese.
Quality wise? A-okay, certainly better than Fox's own VHS version which is full of streaks, scratches, and quivers. But it needs to be digitally remastered and released in DVD by Fox itself, Dolby 5.0 all that stuff. Meanwhile, this version is the best thing going, and it's damn good.
As for the movie. Well . . . de gustibus and all that. For me, the most fascinating persona is not Lot (Stewart Granger) but the "Queen of Sodom," a lady of tastes sapphic and sadistic ("Next only to the pleasure of giving death is the excitement of watching it" she burbles to a horrified Lot), played to a perfect lip-snarl by the French actress Anouk Aimée.
Most of all though is the MUSIC SCORE, which outclasses every other element of the movie and is a bit incongruous to find accompanying this biblical pabulum, amusing and visually stunning as much of it is. To me the score is simply one of Miklos Rozsa's absolute finest, his third best after Ben-Hur and Quo Vadis, utterly LUCID and free of the mushy dissonances that occasionally, just occasionally muck up the Rozsa repertoire. Take just one example: a pastorale Rozsa called "By the River," which plays when Lot is courting his wife-to-be (Pier Angeli), a little gem-of-a-gem that stands with ANY pastorale in any of his films.
So we need to have this DVD remastered in state-of-the-art by Fox itself in Dolby 5.0, the whole works. But meanwhile, kudos to the Brazilians for doing Fox's work for it, a very very credible job. Buy with confidence.

Fat Pizza is a politically incorrect absolutelly hilarous slice of modern day Australian humour. It is quite foreign to the American style but then so was Benny Hill and Monty Python in days gone by. If you can drag your prejudices past seemingly broad jokes it is full of life and joy and wit. It is destined to sink like a stone as a fish out of water - but its well worth a look if you have an open mind, a sense of curiousity, an innocent sense of humour, and a spare slice of cash.

This movie details the gang rape of a young mentally retarded girl, and the trial of her rapists that follows. Sexual assault/abuse of the physically and/or mentally disabled is a crime that goes largely unreported and/or unprosecuted for a number of reasons. Lifetime did a wonderful job with this delicate subject matter, and I recommend it to anyone who cares about violence prevention.

Deliberate Stranger (1986) Review

Deliberate Stranger (1986)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is undoubtedly the finest performance of Mark Harmon's career, as he more than adequately steps into the shoes to play the part of Ted Bundy, probably the most notorious serial killer of the twentieth century. He effortlessly captures Bundy's on the surface boyish charm, explaining to the viewers why Bundy's protestations of innocence were able to fool so many people for so long, and also how he was able to lure his unsuspecting victims to their ultimate fate. Masters, Forrest, Walsh, and Ashton are also excellent as the frustrated detectives who spent years following Bundy's trail of death around the United States. Thankfully, this movie spares the viewers the grisly details of how the murders occurred, but the non exploitive way in which it deals with Bundy's destruction of so many lives is what truly makes this movie shine. It runs for over three hours and we all know what happened to Bundy in the end, but this fact is diluted by the way the excellent script and acting weaves a web of suspense and intrigue which is enthralling to the very end. I can guarantee two things - that whoever watches this mini series will never forget it, and they will forever speculate as to the true tally of lives that Bundy took, a tally which he carried with him to the grave.

Ilsa, Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks Review

Ilsa, Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dyanne Thorn returns in the storming sequel to "She Wolf", and it seems to have been given a budget boost, as the setting moves to an Arabian oils sheik's kingdom in the middle of the desert, where Ilsa presides over his palace as right hand security guard and keeper of his harem of kidnapped beauties. The film doen't quite match the excesses of the first film in bad taste, and the camp comedy elements have all been increased, but there are still many gruesome scenes as the harem women are abused and tortured for various reasons, including a pretty revolting sub-plot to assasinate the sheik by deploying a bomb placed inside a womans body that will detonate during sex! Uniform fans will be pleased to see Ilsa replendent in her khaki shorts and boots, but she does not have the same prescence as in the previous film because she is herself punished at one point by despotic sheik, and its a shame to see that the film recycles her weakness of falling in love with a hunky American, which once again leads to her downfall. However, this film is still pretty extreme, but with a slant more towards sexual perversions than violence, and without the Nazi theme of it's predecessor its a lot less sleazy and offensive. Still way outside of the mainstream, though (and a hell of a lot better than the third film "Ilsa Tigress of Siberia", which has a cracking first 30 minutes, but disappoints immediately afterwards). A recommended buy for fans of the first movie, as well as one for any cult enthusiast.

Rome (HBO Series): Episode 1 Review

Rome (HBO Series): Episode 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Four hundred years after the last king was driven from the city, the Republic of Rome rules many nations, but cannot rule itself. The city is constantly roiled by conflict between the common people and the nobility. Power is shared and order maintained by two soldiers, old friends, Gnaeus Pompey Magnus and Gaius Julius Caesar. Once, Pompey was acknowledged by all to be the greater man. But for the last eight years while Pompey has kept the peace in Rome, Caesar has waged a war of conquest in Gaul that has made him ver more rich and popular. The balance of power is shifting and the nobility have grown fearful. Though of noble blood himself, Caesar stands with the common people. An aristocrat with soldier, money, and the love of the people--might make himself king."
Or they might be assassinated on the floor of the Senate in Rome on the Ides of March in the year 44 BC. However, the first episode of "Rome" begins with a battle in Gaul eight years earlier where Caesar's legions literally bring the king of the Gauls to his knees. Before we meet the familiar names from history the first character we see is Second Spear Centurion Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, "Kingdom of Heaven") and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, "King Arthur") fighting in the ranks of the 13th Legion. However, on the day of victory Caesar (Ciarán Hinds, "Persuasion") receives news that his daughter Julia, wife of Pompey (Kenneth Cranham), has died in childbirth.
Here the series plays with the chronology of history a bit. Julia Caesaris died in 54 BC, while Marcus Licinius Crassus, the third member of the First Triumvirate, was killed the following year during his campaign in Parthia and the series begins in Gaul in 52 BC. But Crassus is out of the picture and what matters is that we begin with the rift that developed between Pompey and Caesar because of these events. With Pompey becoming closer to the Optimates. Caesar offered Pompey one of his nieces in marriage, but Pompey refused and instead married Cornelia Metella, the daughter of one of Caesar's greatest enemies, Metellus Scipio. Meanwhile, Porcius Cato (Karl Johnson) is standing up in the Senate and speaking against the illegal Gallic War and demanding to know why Caesar has not returned to Rome. Cato predicts Caesar wants "to rule Rome as a bloody tyrant." In fact, Cato wants Caesar ordered home for trial. Pompey is not ready to renounce Caesar, but clearly Civil War is inevitable and both men are on the road to their respective deaths.
When in this case Atia of the Julii (Polly Walker, "Patriot Games") sends her young son, Octavian (Max Pirkis, "Master and Commander"), to Gaul to deliver a magnificent white horse as a gift to Ceasar, Pompey decides to kill two birds with one stone. Visiting Caesar in Gaul is Marcus Junius Brutus (Tobias Menzies), who arrives just as Caesar's personal standard has been stolen. The men think Caesar has lost his luck and so Vorenus and Pullo, the Mutt and Jeff of the series, are sent off to retrieve it. As Mark Antony (James Purefoy) points out, Vorenus has a brain, and while Pullo apparently does not he does provide requisite brawn. While they search for this particular needle in a haystack what they find instead is Octavian, who has been captured by brigands (along with the aforementioned stallion). Who would have thought with all that is happening that Caesar's biggest mistake is writing with only "great affection" and not love when sends a message to his former mistress, Servilia of the Junii (Lindsay Duncan), the mother of Brutus. He complains that his mother has been nagging him to attend politics; he has no idea what is to come.
The first season of "Rome" is not due out on DVD until the end of the year, apparently a concerted effort to get some of the money that shows up in your hands as holiday gift certificates. What you have here is the first episode of "Rome," the intriguing trailer for the series, and a behind the scene featurette. This DVD was being given away in stores when you shelled out big bucks for an entire season of an HBO series like "The Sopranos" or "Band of Brothers." At this point, given that the first season of "Rome" is over and the DVD is a month away, the interest in having just the pilot episode has to be minimal while interest in the complete series has to be growing. I really enjoyed the series, but unless you are a person who only collects pilot episodes, go for the whole thing.
I watched the ABC mini-series "Empire" this summer, which had many of the same characters and essentially began where "Rome" ends, with Ceasar's assassination. But "Empire" smacked too much of "Gladiator" when it needed to be more like "I, Cladius." The good news is that "Rome" is decidedly in the spirit of that celebrated BBC look at the early Roman emperors, although with more restrained performances (with Walker the exception that proves the rule here). Hinds provides the most complete portrait of Caesar to date and I especially like the political savy that Pirkis shows as the young Octavian, which makes me believe he will hold his own against Antony down the road and become the first Roman emperor. But while Stevenson's Pollo provides surprising depth along the way it is McKidd's Vorenus who turns out to be the noblest Roman of this bunch and who will find the Ides of March to be a fateful day for more personal reasons.

The Perfect Husband Review

The Perfect Husband

Having just viewed this film, I must say it makes for a pleasent evening's viewing. Revolving around two freinds Milian (Tim Roth), a gifted pianist and notorious womanizer, and Franz (Peter Firth), the manager of a luxery spa, who meet again after seven years. Set in 1900, the story opens with Milan having been challanged to a duel after he attempts to seduce the wife of a Military Officer. Milan wins the duel, his 29th by shooting the officer in the behind. Meanwhile we first see Franz aboard a train with a little girl where he throws a dog off after it's owner throws his pipe out the window. The meeting of the two invokes memories in Milan of a long ago summer and fall when he first met Franz at a spa and the two quickly become freinds. Milan also falls for Franz's lovely wife Therese (Ana Belen), but she at first repulses his advances. A three way freindship soon develops however, much like that in Truffauts Jules and Jim, culminateing in the trio having a fully clothed swim party in the spa's pool. After this point, Therese and Milan's illicit affair heats up behind Franz's back and we see it unfold in the flashbacks that are interspersed with the main action. Although Franz makes no outward sign, Milan begins to suspect the other man knows about the affair and has waited seven years to seek revenge. But neither he or the viewer are really sure about this, or if the little girl is the product of the long ago affair until the films final moments. If you like period dramas that carry you along with the story, then A PERFECT HUSBAND is a must for your film library.

Pandora Peaks / Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers Review

Pandora Peaks / Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers
Average Reviews:

Russ Meyer's "Pandora Peaks" gets a bad rap, but it is a fitting final film celebrating all the sexy things Meyer celebrated. While there is no story, there is wit and self-parody. "Pandora Peaks" is a remake or a redo of his wistful "Mondo Topless" in the 1960s complete with tape recorders. I don't share Meyer's predilections, but I find a lot of things to enjoy in his films and I find them in "Pandora Peaks".
Perhaps "Pandora Peaks" is his Warhol film. You can come and go as you please. Leave it playing and check it out as you go about your household chores.
"Finders Keepers Losers Weepers", which I had not seen before, is probably more conventional and straight than his official straight films, "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" and "The Seven Minutes". Could have been better with humour, but still a good B grade thriller to pass the time away.

I've been looking for this title in the US as a gift for my American friends...and it has finally come out !
Since this is the first review, i need to recommend this title heartily !
The movie opened in France a couple of years back with very good reviews and was a nice success...
The storyline :
Luis (Alain Chabat), a fortysomething bachelor, works for a perfume company and is known as a 'nose' (e.g. one who creates perfumes), he has an overbearing family of one mother & five sisters... who think it is about time he got married.
He eventually sets up a plan NOT to get married, hiring one of his colleagues' sister Emma (Charlotte Gainsbourg) for a very peculiar 'job'...
The rest you'll find out renting or buying this DVD !
The performances are delightful throughout, Alain Chabat and Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter of late french singer Serge Gainsbourg and singer/actress Jane Birkin) bring warmth and wit to their characters, the mother (Bernadette Lafont) is her usual funny self !
The first time i watched it a few scenes had me in stitches !
So... if you're looking for a movie to make you forget your worries for 90mn... This is IT !

Silent Partner (1979) Review

Silent Partner (1979)
Average Reviews:

I first saw this movie on HBO back in 1982, and it struck me as the best Hitchcock movie that Hitchcock never made. The Silent Partner is a deft mixtue of suspense and humor, with enough twists to keep one guessing until the very end. I used to own it on LaserDisc, and the film was grainy and the colors rather faded. I am pleased to report that the film has aged well, and the colors on this dvd are far richer than they were on Laser or HBO. The grain is still there, but it is not a distraction. If you like suspense films and have not seen his movie, you owe it to yourself to see it.
One last word: I wish Amazon would not allow reviews for a product prior to its release. There are a number of reviews here that were written long before the DVD release ( April 3). The film is, in fact, presented in a widescreen (1.85:1) aspect ratio. The cover is terrible, and whoever designed it Obviously never saw the film, but what is contained within the case is well worth watching. I wish people had the sense and integrity to actually view a product prior to posting a review of it.

Wide Open ( Sängkamrater ) Review

Wide Open ( Sängkamrater )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fans of 70's Swedish sex kitten Christina Lindberg may wish to check out this film which is billed as Ms Lindberg's last movie appearance. I would note that there is now a NTSC Region 1 version of "Wide Open" available from Impulse DVD so N. American viewers can enjoy the expereince ( I purchased my copy on ebay as Amazon isn't listing it, yet). All that said - "Wide Open" is actually not all that great a flik, nor does one get as much of Christina as might be wished for, and is implied by her prominent appearance on the box cover art! The Impulse disc 'extras' includes an interesting, contemporary, interview with both the film's Director, Gustav Wicklund, and Ms Lindberg herself (still looking pretty hot after all these years!)... that sheds some light on aspects of the film. Wicklund had previously directed Lindberg in the (much better) film: "Exposed" and was hoping to cash in on her popularity again with his new concept of a crossover softcore sex/gangster film. However, Lindberg had just returned from making big bucks on a Japanese movie deal and her, newly, inflated fees only allowed Wicklund to hire her for two days of shooting... thus her presence in "Wide Open" is relatively minimal. Still her time on screen is used to good advantage as she is pretty much gloriously naked throughout in scenes as diverse as a porno photo shoot to nude vacume cleaning in her boyfriend's apartment.
The overall filmic experience of "Wide Open" is pretty uneven. The director was apparently attempting to create a blend of sexiness and criminal intrigue with a light comedic overtone. From my perspective he didn't do a very good job of merging the genres. The plot involves a low life guy who is living with two sisters and enjoying sex with both of them. About 50% of the plot revolves around the 'tensions' created by this sexual triangle. One of the sisters, Beryl (played by blond Gunilla Larsson) gets inadvertantly involved in a drug drop by picking up a fur coat belonging to another woman that has mysterious packets of white powder hidden inside it... she is then persued by the gangsters trying to recover their property. The henceman who is trying to get the drugs back for his 'boss' is portrayed as a bumbling klutz - and this provides the 'comedic' element. Sadly, it all doesn't really come off very effectively in the director's (and editor's) hands. The characters are all somehow sorta unlikeable, the 'situations' unbelievable, and the continuity is choppy. Christina plays the role of a photographer's girlfriend both of whom are rather tangential to the main plot and characters. Gunilla Larsson gets the most female screen time and I'd have to give her about a C+ on the attractiveness scale - which is also the 'grade' I might give to the whole movie. Lindberg explains in her interview that her 'skin film' career ended because her boyfriend/husband of the day (himself a 'centerfold' photgrapher!) didn't want to 'share' her with anyone else, so she quit the biz. Thanks buddy! If one wishes to get a real sense of the qualities that made Ms Lindberg 'a star' I'd recommend viewing other of her earlier offerings such as "Maid In Sweden", "Thriller, A Cruel Picture", and the, previously mentioned, "Exposed". Still, if you are a die hard fan of Lindberg and/or Swedish erotica, "Wide Open" may be worth a look.

Broken English (1997) Review

Broken English (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this $2 million film at the Edmonton film festival in 1997. From the first scene I knew I was seeing a film that was very well thought out - the windshield wipers of a bus traveling through a destroyed Sarajevo are synched to the sound track's beat. The characters were obviously well researched and it is also obvious that the director spent a great deal of time with his cast of unknown actors - there is a startling sex scene that no inexperienced actor could pull off without a great deal of coaching - a scene that caused the film to be rejected by North American distributors and is the reason the film is largely unknown there.
This film was Rade Serbedzija big break. The director, Gregor Nicholas told me after the film that Serbedzija called him one night drunk from London thanking him for making him into a bad guy. Serbedzija was thanking him because he got the roll of the bad guy in The Saint opposite Val Kilmer because of his role in Broken English. He also told me that they had to modify the bus in the first scene so that the wipers would synch with the music.
Finally, the true issue of this film - incest - is so subtle that most people don't even notice it at all.
